The PuSh Festival is one of Vancouver’s signature events. Produced over three weeks each January, the Festival presents groundbreaking work in the live performing arts. The PuSh Festival expands the horizons of Vancouver artists and audiences with work that is visionary, genrebending, multi-disciplined, startling and original. The Festival showcases acclaimed international, Canadian and local artists and mixes them together with an alchemy that inspires audiences, rejuvenates artists, stimulates the industry and forges productive relationships around the globe. The Festival is a broker of international partnerships, a meeting place for creative minds, a showcase of Canada’s best and an incubator of brilliant new work.

WELCOME MESSAGES What an inspirational year of performing arts! Your generosity enabled the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival to make an impact on tens of thousands of arts patrons and artists. I’m honoured that you are part of our loyal family of supporters who make the PuSh Festival possible. As a PuSh Festival supporter in the past year, you may have heard about two of our most celebrated shows, Jack Charles V. the Crown and monumental. One was an international show with a local relevance, the other a local show with an international reach. If you picked up the 2016 PuSh Festival program guide, you saw Jack Charles’s riveting face on the cover. His autobiographical performance in Jack Charles V. the Crown, about the abuse and redemption of an Aboriginal Australian, drew many similarities in the experiences of Aboriginal peoples in Canada. To experience Jack Charles gracing the stage of SFU Woodward’s—having traveled such great distances—to witness him stepping forward towards the audience to speak of his life… It reminded me of the undeniable power of the word and the theatre. For one night only, monumental brought to the stage one of Vancouver’s most revered contemporary dance companies, The Holy Body Tattoo, and Montreal’s legendary post-rock collective, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, in one of the boldest presentations the PuSh Festival has ever taken on. The hometown performance at the PuSh Festival launched monumental on a wildly successful world tour that, so far, includes stops in Australia, the U.K., and the U.S. For many in Vancouver’s arts community, The Holy Body Tattoo is the scene’s original “rock stars.” They proved that a local dance company could carve out an international career the envy of any aspiring contemporary artist. While we had an exceptional year of performing arts, we also had success with our ancillary programs—including the PuSh Youth Program and Accessible PuSh, both of which are close to my heart. The incredible diversity of shows the PuSh Festival brings to Vancouver stages each year have even more value when they’re made available to a broad cross-section of audiences. Your support created those opportunities to bring performing arts into the lives of all Vancouverites, including the young and the marginalized. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for a remarkable 2016 PuSh Festival. As I look forward to another exciting year ahead, I invite you to read our 2016 Impact Report and celebrate together our recent achievements. Norman Armour ARTISTIC & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Every January, the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival team shifts into overdrive to bring the annual event to life for thee weeks. The 2016 PuSh Festival was no exception. We work incredibly hard—and we also have an incredible amount of fun. For us, the PuSh Festival is the best three weeks of the year. We are sustained by the performances and the community that shows up to join us. Among many heart-warming moments at this year’s festival, standing on the Queen Elizabeth Theatre stage and looking out at nearly 2,300 enthusiastic audience members for monumental was a remarkable sight that reminded me that the PuSh Festival makes a real community impact. That impact extends beyond the three-weeks of our festival, and beyond the many stages we program. The PuSh Festival’s impact can be felt year-round, throughout the city. PuSh has changed the performing arts landscape in Vancouver and across Canada: it has created an international network of artists and patrons who are deeply engaged with each other and the world around them. We are a values-driven organization that infuses leadership, risktaking, innovation, and partnership into every facet of our organization. With these values in mind we are striding into our second decade, and 2016 was an important year for mapping our future. Last year we created a strategic planning committee of the board, and together with staff and key stakeholders, we created a strategic plan that assesses the organization’s solid foundations, current challenges, and articulates a powerful vision for the future of the PuSh Festival. The nearly sold-out monumental presentation tested our organizational capacity—from staff to office systems—and ultimately elevated us to new heights. We’re celebrating this success and carrying our enhanced capacity into future editions of the PuSh Festival. The PuSh Festival began in 2004 with an annual budget of $400,000. In the 2015-16 season we operated with a $1.9 million budget. The company’s growth has been rapid, and in its short history PuSh has faced, and overcome, financial challenges. Like many peer organizations in the region, we struggle to secure stable annual funding commitments from a variety of sources. As the PuSh Festival heads into our 13th year, we are more grateful than ever for our visionary supporters. With your support, Push has made an impact—and continues to make an impact. Please delve into our 2016 Impact Report and see what we mean when we say we couldn’t do it without you! Roxanne Duncan MANAGING DIRECTOR

FINDING OUTSTANDING ART FROM AROUND THE WORLD In order to program a three-week festival full of excellent, cutting-edge performing art from around the world our curatorial team—Artistic & Executive Director Norman Armour and Associate Curator Joyce Rosario—plans each edition of the PuSh Festival more than 18 months in advance. Their task begins by traveling to festivals and theatres around the world to scout everything from the latest work by seasoned artistic talents to debuts of fast-rising new voices. They represent Vancouver in the global market by attending hundreds of shows, networking with our peers in the national and international performing arts sector, discussing emerging industry trends and sharing leads about the most exciting artists practicing today.

26 festivals attended 200+ shows attended 26 cities in 11 countries visited 90+ days on the road 170,858 kilometres travelled

The dedicated contributions of PuSh supporters allow us to lead, influence and participate in these vital conversations by providing the necessary resources to travel in Canada and abroad. PuSh supporters make it possible for our curatorial team to find the most innovative performing art in the world to bring to Vancouver.

WELCOMING ARTISTS TO VANCOUVER WITH OPEN ARMS Each edition of the PuSh Festival is a celebration of the power of the live performing arts. In 2016 we continued to welcome the world’s most exciting and important artists to our city so that their art can seed transformative experiences, invite conversation and expand our perspective of contemporary issues. Their performances at the PuSh Festival and their presence in Vancouver is an open exchange of ideas—between artists and citizens alike. The artists and their work leave indelible impressions on the audiences, the local community of artists and practitioners, and the city at large.

PuSh is an exciting place to be. The work is respected. The vibe is chill. As an artist at PuSh, you’re well taken care of. And it’s a festival that is known around the world for work that pushes the envelope. It’s exactly where I want my work to be! ROSS MANSON VOLCANO THEATRE (TORONTO) CENTURY SONG

PuSh supporters are the welcoming hosts who provide some of the financial resources necessary to fly and accommodate our visiting artists, making these rich cultural exchanges a possibility. Among other artist expenses, the contribution of PuSh supporters helped cover the $9,000 hotel and accommodation costs for the 115 artists at the 2016 PuSh Festival.

BUILDING A FUTURE WITH YOUNG AUDIENCES The PuSh Youth Program, through a variety of initiatives, ushers young people through the rich world of the live performing arts by making it engaging, entertaining and easier to access. Initiatives such as the Youth Academy, a dedicated group that attends and discusses the festival shows together; the Youth Assembly, a one-day professional development congress for emerging artists; and the Young Ambassadors, new graduates who are matched and work with visiting artists for work experience, are some of the in-depth adventures we offer young people. At the PuSh Festival we take great measures to bring down the barriers that prohibit young people from attending the performing arts. Money can be one such barrier. The PuSh Youth Passport, in its third year at the 2016 PuSh Festival, provides 16- to 24-year olds with $5 tickets!

271 Push Youth Passports registrants 350+ $5 Youth Passport tickets distributed 50 participants in PuSh Youth Program initiatives YOUTH ACADEMY. PHOTO: EMILY NEUMANN

Keeping the PuSh Festival accessible for youth is only possible through contributions from PuSh supporters, who make it possible to reduce regular ticket prices by 86%. One gift of $100, for example, underwrites the true cost of tickets for four young audience members, allowing them to see shows for $5!

48 hours contributed by 6 Young Ambassadors shadowing visiting artists

I think the greatest gift an artist can give us is the gift of wonder. I walked away from every show at PuSh in stunned silence. Youth need access to the experiences you can only get from live performance. And who knows? We could be informing the next generation of thinkers and doers and makers and dreamers. SHARING PERFORMING ARTS WITH EVERYONE

MEET YOUR NEW NEIGHBOUR. PHOTO: SARAH RACE

The PuSh Festival is an inclusive place, one that values and embraces each unique audience member. We believe our individual perspectives contribute to our collective strength. We believe that the engagement and investment of all citizens—of every age and walk of life—is the key to the future and sustainability of the arts. Indeed, the arts are at the core of our city’s health, livability and well-being. So at the PuSh Festival we strive to ensure that individuals facing physical, social, cultural or financial barriers have the opportunity to attend the performing arts. Through the various initiatives of Accessible PuSh, we seek to reduce or eliminate those barriers. With our community ticketing initiative we partner with trusted social service agencies to distribute free and reduced-price tickets to different communities who otherwise may not be able to attend the performing arts. At select performances we provide American Sign Language interpretation for those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and audio-described VocalEye interpretation for Blind and Partially Sighted audience members. In 2016, we proudly launched Meet Your New Neighbour, to pair Vancouverites with new Canadians and refugees to attend the PuSh Festival together. MYNN fostered a new sense of discovery and community for the participants of both sides, and unlocked a remarkable exchange of cultures.

300 free tickets distributed through Accessible PuSh initiatives 94 Meet Your New Neighbour guests and volunteer hosts

The PuSh Festival showcases the best of performing arts to as wide an audience as possible—and provides transformative experiences to as many people as possible. PuSh supporters make that work possible, by providing the necessary funds for such things as inclusivity training for volunteers and offsetting subsidized tickets for marginalized groups. One gift of $150 enabled us to hire a professional VocalEye interpreter for Blind and Partially Sighted patrons to enjoy a live performance at the 2016 PuSh Festival.

Once again, the PuSh Festival team delivered an amazing experience that “pushes the limits” and delivers an experience with real professionalism, friendliness and joie de vivre. LOUANN MEET YOUR NEW NEIGHBOUR VOLUNTEER HOST
