OFFICIAL VISITORS GUIDE

You might say we play for keeps. As the largest not-forprofit health system in North Texas, we are all about community commitment. And we value collaboration for the impact it can achieve, especially since we are a major employer in every city we serve. Collaboration like building parks, supporting local schools, stocking food banks, hosting health fairs, conducting immunization clinics and blood drives, and stepping up for United Way. As a faith-based system, our game is to improve the health of people in the communities we serve. 1-877-THR-Well

W

e are pioneers and cowboys, business leaders and technologists, amigos of all races, born and raised here or transported here for our own various reasons, and we all say to you … Welcome to North Texas for our first-ever Super Bowl. Yes, we do have visitors who, upon stepping off the plane, expect to spot a few cowboys on horseback. Head west from DFW International Airport and you might see just that, but you’ll also find a dynamic downtown and worldclass cultural offerings co-existing beautifully with Fort Worth’s authentic Western heritage. Others keep waiting for Miss Ellie and J.R. Ewing to appear at the In 1912, the first Texas-Oklahoma game doorstep, straight out of the “Dallas” TV show was held in Dallas and 100 football from the 1980s. And if seasons later, Super Bowl XLV will be you pick your spots in held at Cowboys Stadium. Big D, you still might. We call this fourcounty area North Texas. And our people and land are so varied that we cannot be accurately stereotyped. Not unless you throw guitar slingers and running backs and bankers into one large stew. Back in the thornier days of 1841, Dallas slowly began to prop itself up on its flatlands, four years before Texas became the U.S.’s 28th state and just five years after Texas declared its independence from Mexico. How odd that the cities of North Texas would join hands to take flight together over an airport. The opening of Dallas/Fort Worth International in 1974 placed North Texas within a four-hour plane ride of every U.S.

On February 6, 2011, all eyes will be on Cowboys Stadium for the first Super Bowl in North Texas. 7

WELCOME TO NORTH TEXAS mainland city. The entire four-county area, despite its varying idiosyncrasies, benefitted from the sudden boom. Live music and culinary cuisines have always pulled the region together, as did a number of spectator and participatory sports. But as far back as 100 years, football has been embraced as a North Texas staple like no other. The likes of TCU’s Slingin’ Sammy Baugh and Davey O’Brien or SMU’s Doak Walker, the first true All-American Boy, had not been seen anywhere before. Football stadiums became more populated on Saturday afternoons Football in North Texas than most Texas towns. has deep roots, producing And then along came the Dallas Cowboys, and you don’t have to be legendary football players from North Texas to know the rest such as Slingin’ Sammy of this story. Five Super Bowl Baugh (above), Davey Championships. A multitude of Pro O’Brien, and Doak Walker Football Hall of Famers and many to name a few. others deserving. Fifty years of a franchise that has united not only a region but an entire state of frenzied fans. After all, they are “America’s Team.” Beyond football and music and regional cooking, there has also always been this about North Texas: It’s the people, the collective smile of a region, the daily courtesies of strangers who nod and smile. We’re friendly. It’s just our nature. So welcome to North Texas for Super Bowl XLV. Hunker down and North Texas is the Nation’s fourth-largest metropolitan area. stay awhile. 8

T

cowboys stadium

he Super Bowl is a world-class event that demands a world-class venue. The Dallas Cowboys began a new chapter in their legendary history with the opening of Cowboys Stadium in 2009, a state-of-the-art, Super Bowl-ready facility. Cowboys Stadium has several unique features that make it one of the most distinguishable stadiums in the world: retractable roof – Cowboys Stadium has a retractable roof, guaranteeing weather won’t be an issue on game day. The retractable roof is the world’s largest at 660,800 square feet, yet takes a mere 12 minutes to open. The open roof design was carried over from Texas Stadium in Irving.

Video Boards – Cowboys Stadium contains several video boards, the most unique

being the four-board cluster that is suspended 90 feet directly over the center of the playing surface. The board, a high-definition 1080p screen, runs from the 20-yard line to the 20-yard line, measuring 160 feet in length and 70 feet in height – making it the largest video board installation in the world.

Arches – Cowboys Stadium is supported by two 35-foot deep and 15-foot wide

boxed arch trusses. Each truss spans 1,290 feet, nearly a quarter mile, making the roof the longest clear-span structure in the world. The arches rise to 292 feet and measure more than twice the length of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis.

seating – Cowboys Stadium seats more than 90,000, but can accommodate more with fan-friendly standing-room-only areas. On Sept. 20, 2009, the stadium attracted a record-breaking crowd of 105,121 for the first regular season home game for the Dallas Cowboys. Luxury suites – Cowboys Stadium has over 300 luxury suites – the most of any stadium in the NFL.

end Zone Glass Doors – Cowboys Stadium has the largest retractable end zone

doors, each consisting of five glass panels, 129 feet high by 180 feet wide, that open or close in 18 minutes.

Aesthetics – When building Cowboys Stadium, the Jones family made it a point to incorporate contemporary art into the architecture of the new facility. Currently, 18 major works of art are on display throughout the stadium.

coWBoys sTADium Quick fAcTs: The total cost of Cowboys Stadium was approximately $1.2 billion. The stadium itself fills up 73 acres or 3 million square feet. The entire Statue of Liberty and its base could fit into the stadium with the roof closed. The domed roof is the largest dome ever constructed for a sports stadium and the largest column-free room in the world. Cowboys Stadium has hosted several notable sports events, including setting a record in February 2010 when 108,000 people attended the NBA All-Star Game. Guinness World Records awarded Mitsubishi Electric and the Dallas Cowboys the title of World’s Largest High-Definition Video Display. 30

The Cavanaugh Flight Museum sets apart from most other aviation museums with the quality of the aircraft collection and the airworthy condition of nearly all of the aircraft on display. Many museum aircraft continue to fly on a regular basis. On any given day, visitors may see aircraft active on the museum’s ramp. The museum’s maintenance facility allows visitors to look beneath the skin of such famous aircraft as the Sopwith Camel, the P-51 Mustang, or the German Me-109 and to talk with the mechanics who keep these warbirds flying. This is a rare opportunity not found at other aviation museums. In addition, the museum has other facilities for visitors to enjoy: an outdoor picnic area, an air conditioned canteen, a large aviation art gallery and a large gift shop.

risco was born of western spirit as a tiny watering hole and whistle stop, first along the Shawnee Trail and then along the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad. It is from this railroad that “Frisco” got her name, during the days of massive cattle drives in the 1800s. Located just 20 miles north of Dallas, Frisco is the fastest growing city in America and Texas’ Rising Star for sports, shopping, entertainment, festivals and concerts. In addition to a total of 10 hotels with 1,500 hotel rooms, 8 million square feet of retail space and two major concert venues nestled in the suburbs, Frisco is also making quite a name for itself in the world of youth, amateur and professional sports. The city is home to five sports teams: the Double-A Frisco Pizza Hut Park RoughRiders baseball team; FC Dallas, Major League Soccer; the Texas Legends NBA D-League; the NAHL Texas Tornado and home office and practice field of the Dallas Stars of the NHL. Cirque du Soleil will bring a new season of creativity to the Dr Pepper Arena, the Museum of the American Railroad will launch an outdoor display, and the city will host the NCAA 2011-2013 Division I Football Championship Series games at Pizza Hut Park.
