Mayo College General Council is looking to hire Principals to lead the Mayo College and Mayo College Girl’s School.

We are seeking transformative leaders with a progressive and a global mindset . Purpose - driven, mission - aligned academic leaders who will have the sensibility and gravitas to fulfill the General Council’s vision of creating “ONE MAYO” . A formidable team of two leaders with shared values and goals who will inculcate an ethos of working collaboratively across all functions and disciplines of the school to create a stronger identity, better productivity and a resonating impact .
Mayo College, one of the oldest and pre - eminent boarding schools in India, envisions its students to build on tradition and prepares them to be adaptable global leaders with character. The school needs visionaries to uphold the culture, values, tradition and trajectory for the future . The incoming Principals will need to have a connect with Boarding school ethos and develop an understanding of the traditions and values with which this renowned school was established . The central role for the leader as chief orchestrator, will be to develop and implement a plan for “ONE MAYO” school. An opportunity to create common standards, policies, unify and consolidate the functioning of some key departments across both schools to improve productivity and impact . These departments would be Academics, Housekeeping, Security, HR, Admin, Procurement, Alumni engagement, Student admission and Sports department . Strengthen the school backbone to deliver beyond the sum of its parts, where colleagues across Mayo schools and respective disciplines will work together towards a common goal and mission of “ONE MAYO” .
Along the same lines, under “ONE MAYO” encourage the academic leadership of both schools to work towards creating common academic goals and objectives and strive to implement innovative approaches to achieve academic excellence . It will also include strengthening and significantly improving the infrastructure to suitably support the multidisciplinary academic mission of the school and the General Council’s vision of “ONE MAYO” . ROLE SPECIFICATION
The role will require “ONE MAYO”, but at the same time, paying attention to the minutiae of the day-to-day existence of faculty and students.

• The Principal will recruit senior and multifaceted academics to build on and raise the energy and passion of existing faculty, mentor younger colleagues.


• Reboot HR processes around selection, performance management and training for teachers that recognizes their transition from sage on stage to guide on the side. Develop initiatives that support and promote faculty development and learning outcomes suited to the evolving context.
• Develop a less hierarchical, more horizontal, and highly meritocratic culture among and between teachers, staff and students. Improve on student faculty ratio and optimise cost and productivity of both teaching and non-teaching staff.
• Lead a strategy that creates a common international curriculum for both schools and delivers 21st century academic virtues (curiosity, risk taker, team player, communicator) with a thoughtfully curated and shared culture, architecture, and ecology of learning.
• Enhance the career counselling and advancement facility. Continue to engage and create mutually beneficial partnerships with the best institutions in the world.
• Work closely with the Finance Controller to advise on revenue and keep a pulse on expenditure. Finance should be the sword and shield. A shield that disciplines, mandates hygiene and keep costs under control. A sword that diversifies and raises resources to invest in dreams and priorities.
• Under “ONE MAYO” initiative the Principal will continue to build and leverage Alumni Engagement and Generational Commitment.

ROLE SPECIFICATION

• In 2025 , Mayo College celebrates 150 years of creating history . The Governing Council, various committees and senior school leaders are deeply committed and involved in the planning and execution of celebrating this important and historic milestone . The Principal will work closely with the Secretariat and share significant responsibility to get all stakeholders together, carefully plan and orchestrate various initiatives for the celebrations.
• S/he will have a key role to make this milestone celebration a great success and take the opportunity to leverage this platform to bolster the school’s significance, presence and recognition in India and overseas markets .

• The Principal will also lead a well- planned global marketing mission that constantly strives to increase the perceived value of the “Mayo brand”.
Working Relationships
• The incumbent will need to demonstrate that as a head of the school S/he has the stature, energy and personality to manage and encourage a large full- time teaching staff, to guide and support the senior management team of Vice Principal, Bursar and Directors .

• Have the capacity to enthuse and be an example to both boys and girls across the Mayo College institutions, to create confidence in parents, to stimulate relationships between the school and the local authorities.

Professional Qualifications
• Educational Qualification: Postgraduate with a B. Ed. Degree from a reputed university.
• Proficiency in English Language both spoken and written.
• Experience in teaching: Taught senior classes and ideally have some experience with Middle School as well.
• Have held school management post: Equivalent to a Vice Principal or Principal for at least five years preferably in a residential or day-boarding school. Have knowledge of operations/administration aspects in a residential school, understands the nuances of culture and personalized pastoral care.

• Understands the connection of holistic education to student achievement: Proficient in encouraging co-curricular, cultural, and sports activities. A curious lifelong learner with breadth of knowledge through travel and reading as well as appreciation of Indian culture and heritage.

• A progressive and global mindset with 21st Century Skills: Be well-versed with the latest global trends in education. Lead in evolving best creative teaching practices and integrating technology into the school curriculum. Experience of working in an International Curriculum School would be an asset.

The origin of Mayo College, one of the oldest Public Schools in the country, dates back to 1869 , when Col F K M Walter, the Political Agent of the Bharatpur Agency recommended a school in India ``for a large number of pupils, with a staff thoroughly educated - not mere bookworms, but men fond of field sports and outdoor exercise .... ``

In 1870 , Lord Mayo, the then Viceroy and Governor General, came to Ajmer, where in a Darbar, before the Chiefs of the ruling Princes of Rajputana, he expressed his desire to set up a 'Raj Kumar College' in Ajmer, ``devoted exclusively to the education of the sons of Chiefs, Princes and leading Thakurs . ``

It is interesting to point out that several generations of the descendants of many present at that Darbar have since continued to study at Mayo College .
The College was opened in October 1875 , with Sir Oliver St .John as the first Principal and Maharaja Mangal Singh of Alwar . The Main Building was completed in 1885 and was designed by Major Charles Mant and Swinton Jacob, leading architects of the Indo - Saracenic style .
Some of the greatest changes in the school were brought about by Mr . Stow who was the Principal from 1931 - 1943 . In the same year, the Viceroy ceased to be the President of the General Council. This body was in future presided over by a ruling Prince elected by the council.
Today, students from all walks of life, study in this prestigious institution and make complete use of the many facilities offered .
College Coat of Arms design was furnished by Mr . Lockwood Kipling, a former Principal of The School of Arts, Lahore, and father of the famous Rudyard Kipling .

Abhimanyu Dalal, a distinguished alum, who studied at Mayo College from 1968 to 1974, led the restoration and modernization of the school’s campus, says that even as a teenager he “had a sense of the buildings and a relationship with them” and Mayo’s buildings and campus influenced his decision to become an architect.

Mayo College is situated in the beautiful Madar foothills ; the campus is spread across 187 acres . It is a boys only fully residential school with boarding houses, dining halls and modern classrooms .
Mayo College and Mayo College Girls School (MCGS) are adjoining to each other . They have a unique distinction of great campus infrastructure in terms of its co - curricular facilities which include a nine - hole golf course, a polo ground, stables housing 60 horses for Horse - riding, polo and equestrian, a 400 m athletic track and 110 m obstacle race (hurdle) track, swimming pools, well- equipped gymnasiums, a 10 m air rifle shooting range, multiple cricket fields which includes a turf wicket with separate cricket nets, tennis courts, squash courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, hockey fields, badminton courts, trampoline, boxing ring, artificial climbing wall and indoor table tennis courts, s tate of the art computer laboratories, audio visual room, activity blocks, a home science laboratory, libraries, robotic lab, and a Saraswati temple for contemplation .

Academics
Mayo College is affiliated to CBSE as well as Cambridge (CAIE) . At present, the senior school has classes from VII to XII and the junior school has classes from IV to VI. The students take the class X examination at the age of fifteen and the class XII at the age of seventeen . Great emphasis is laid on Academics as this is one of the important prerequisites for a successful future for students . Science, Commerce and Humanities streams are offered .
MGCS is a recognized member of the Indian Public Schools’ Conference . Comprising of classes IV to XII, the School is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The Council conducts two Public Examinations in March each year, one at the end of standard X, for which it awards the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), and the other at the end of Standard XII, for which it awards the Indian School Certificate (ISC) . These Examinations have international acceptance . The school also offers the Cambridge (CAIE) curriculum at the Lower Secondary and the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) levels. The students have the option of choosing between the CISCE and the CAIE curricula .

Pastoral Care
• The Mayo College provides a high level of pastoral care, safeguarding the pupils’ welfare as per the school’s Safeguarding procedures and Child Protection Policy. Bullying and ragging is strictly banned.

• At present, Mayo College has 12 boarding houses, divided into 8 Senior Houses for students of Class VIII to XII, 1 Holding House for students of Class VII & 3 Junior Houses for boys from Class IV to VI.

• MCGS has 6 boarding Houses. Every house has a house color and a motto to which students endeavor to live up to. Allocation of Houses: All girls are placed in one of the six Houses on entry to MCGS. The vertical grouping of the girls in their Houses allows them to work with girls of all ages and give support and inspiration to younger girls as well as foster a sense of family and community.
• All the boarding house buildings are fully capable of meeting students’ varied needs. Each house has a common room equipped with a television, board games and indoor games. The school infrastructure is built with sustainable high-quality materials and green technologies to minimize energy usage and carbon footprint.
• Campus is flooded with natural light, all the boarding houses are surrounded by scenic beauty and natural flora and fauna, ensuring that students live and learn happily and peacefully in a holistic environment. The world is increasingly becoming boundary - less and if a student has to succeed, she/he should have an appreciation of global affairs and be able to function comfortably in any part of the world . To give its students an international perspective, every year Mayo College sends a certain percentage of students for exchange programmes and projects overseas to countries like Australia, South Africa, Germany, France, USA and UK .
Mayo is a member of Round Square which is an association of 180 schools in 40 countries. In addition, they have direct Exchange Programs with many schools where students spend anything from a fortnight to 3 months overseas . As a reciprocal gesture, Mayo hosts students from such schools. The number of inbound foreign students at Mayo is among the highest in the country .

Mayo also has Sports - centric Exchange Programmes with countries such as England, Australia, Egypt and Russia . This covers various Sports such as Football, Riding and more . By the time a student passes out of Mayo, she/he is confident of taking on the world .

BEYOND CLASS 12: WHAT LIES AHEAD?

• An education from Mayo equips students with the essential life skills to cope, innovate and lead . To help students make the transition to the world of higher education and careers, Mayo has a Comprehensive Career Guidance and Counselling Programme that focuses on helping them make informed choices about their future .
• Towards the end of their stay at Mayo, most students have a clear idea of what they want to study next . But getting admission into the top - notch institutions is not easy because of extreme competition . Mayo gives boys the choice of expert guidance in different fields for exams such as PSAT / SAT, JEE and CLAT . It is also a centre for Trinity College, London Speech, Drama and Music Examinations .
• The process of Career Guidance, Counselling and preparation starts from class IX onwards. The Mayo Career Guidance Centre aims to provide every student, from class IX to XII, customized one on one support for stream and subject selection, identifying areas of strength, defining preferred career paths, building desired skills and competitive portfolios and selecting 'Good Fit' colleges/ universities.
• Experts’ lectures, Psychometric tests, University meets, Career Fairs and intensive Career Counselling is undertaken with students of classes IX to XII. This Centre runs an internship programme for students and also a Career fair for students which is attended by a host of national and international universities.
