The fall is the time of year when the leaves change colors, football games start, and homecoming is on everyone’s mind. This year for homecoming there has been some changes. For the first time in the history of Woodhaven High School the freshman class will be able to participate in homecoming events. Unlike most high schools Woodhaven High School consists of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The freshman class reside in the second middle school, Patrick Henry Middle School. Freshman will be invited to the homecoming dance, the pep assembly, and homecoming float building. Students from the freshman class will be able to vote for representatives for prince and princess. Students have different opinions about the topic. Some say that the freshman should participate, while others think otherwise. “I guess it’s a little unfair because we never got that, it’s going to be a lot more crowded. So me being an upper classmen I think it’s lame, but if I was a freshman I would love it. Although I really only think they’d be more involved with “the high school experience” if they actually went to the high school, but I don’t want that at all!” junior Hannah Satterlee said.

Quiz Bowl ready for winning season by Emily Walmsley Photographer Mr. Keith Weimer, in charge of Quiz Bowl here at the high school, is excited to start the season. Quiz Bowl is a game in which two teams compete head to head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports and popular culture. “It’s basically Jeopardy style on all subjects,” Weimer says of Quiz Bowl. He has many high expectations for this year. When asked what his main goal was, Weimer simply said, “To win.” He also has high expectations for the returning students in Quiz Bowl, which are the juniors and seniors. “There are not many sophomores,” Weimer admits, “The sophomores watch the seniors, and by the time they are seniors, they are ready to play.” Competition season is set to start in October, but the first meeting was September 23. Once a month, through February, Quiz Bowl will compete against other schools. If you’re interested in becoming a part of Quiz bowl, practice is every Tuesday, from 2:30 to 3:30. Quiz Bowl is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and meet new people. Come check it out and get ready for a wonderful season.

“It’s not fair. You don’t actually go to the high school you shouldn’t be involved,” senior Ravan Smith said. “It’s really irritating because when we were in their grade of course we didn’t have the option to go to homecoming, but now that we’re juniors they’ll allow it . It’s really unfair. My sister is a freshman this year and is rubbing it in my face that she’s going to be coming to the dance that i’m going to be at. I think shes more happy that it’s going to annoy me that shes going then actually attending the dance.” junior Greg Tittle said. On the other hand some students agree, “It’s completely fair, in a regular high school they would be involved; it would be beneficial for freshman because they would get a grasp on how a regular high school works,” junior Brenden Post stated. “I’m really excited to go! I think its fair since in all the other school districts freshman are allowed to go,” freshman Kayla Cobetto stated. “I think it’s pretty cool that freshman are being included this year, and yes it does make me feel more apart of the high school,” freshman Libbey Lorenz said. Overall there is a large gap between the ages of freshman (13 years of age), compared to seniors (18 years of age). There are many different views and opinions about the topic, but for the freshman attending the dance; welcome to the high school!

Woodhaven welcomes the International Thespian Society by Shelby Seeley Web Designer

WHS will welcome the International Thespian Society into the school this fall with it’s chartering member’s induction ceremony just around the corner. The International Thespian Society began back in 1929, and since then has had more than two million members. Currently, in the United States there are over 90,000 members and 4,000 high school and middle school troupes. ITS’ mission is to provide resources to theatre kids beyond the scope of their school. They do this through a variety of unique, enriching opportunities and perks for their members. One of these perks is a subscription to their one-of-a-kind magazine, Dramatics, which focuses on high school and college level drama, written for students and teachers. Both the magazine and ITS’ website include valuable resources, like practical articles on acting, design, directing and more. Some other rare opportunities provided for members of ITS are conferences and events throughout the year across the state, job listings, scholarships and a community with open communication to other troupes in the area and across the country to share ideas, designs, tips and tricks. “Everything [that is] brought from outside the school and

incorporated into [WHS] the higher our ceiling becomes,” stated the new troupe’s sponsor, Michael Clemons. The most popular and enriching experiences ITS has to offer, however, are the Thespian Festivals. There are both state-level festivals, like the Michigan Thespian Festival at Saginaw Valley State University on the 5th and 6th of December this year, and national-level festivals. Every year in the summer, ITS members from across the country gather to take part in the Thespian Festival at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This event, is a celebration of theatre with thousands of high school thespians who join together to watch plays and participate in a choice of 100 plus, 90 minute, hands-on workshops. Between workshops and performances, attendees can wander among booths, meet new friends, and even audition for scholarships to colleges and universities who are scouting for potential students. In order to become a member of ITS and receive all these phenomenal tools, you must fill out an application and meet the points criteria. There is a set amount of points an individual must have in order to be accepted. For example, getting the lead role in a play could earn you eight points, while being an usher could earn you one or two. There is already a pre-specified points system set in place by the ITS, and points are available for every job, no matter how small, in a show. By having the points system, ITS hopes to

honor students efforts both on stage and behind the scenes on a national level. They also hope to encourage more students to get more involved in theatre and helping out with performances. The Woodhaven troupe will be accepting applications every spring for the following year’s chapter. “This is a way to recognize members who have displayed dedication to the Theatre Company,” Clemons said. The 14 chartering members of the Woodhaven troupe will be officially inducted later this fall. They are: Alison Burley, Cullen Canejo, Lauren Cislo, Amberly Gascon, Aimee Guzman, Meghan Hodge, Rebecca Ivankovics, Iver Johnson, Doran Konja, Roberto Martinez, Dana Matthews, Nikkolo Romero, Shelby Seeley and Phillip Warda. ITS strives to show that theatre builds skills that can be applied to the real world. They advocate for how theatre helps build life skills, like creativity, collaboration, critical thinking and communication. Drama teaches humility, discipline, the importance of risk-taking and time management. It encourages confidence, out-of-the-box thinking and problem solving. By opening a chapter of ITS in Woodhaven High School, they are bringing these ideals and resources to the student body and possibly sparking interest in the expansion of theatre education in the school and the district. “[ITS will] provide structure to our program and continued higher standards,” Clemons added.

The club also plans to create their own Manga, which is a Japanese comic, they will be using Adobe Illustrator and the many talents of the individuals among the group. All in all, the group is aimed to help students get involved in something that they find fun, interesting, and a hobby. Currently the club is watching popular Anime, Black Butler. goal is to create a relaxed environment where students alike can discuss factors in music. Club meetings are bi-weekly and aimed to help students get more hands-on with music. The club will do this by watching music videos and analyzing the content and lyrics, having “Record Store Day”, in which students will all take a trip to a local record store and partake in the wide variety of

music. The club also has a Facebook group and aim to open up the minds of students and encourage them to explore their musical boundaries. “We get a lot of the more shy kids, but they usually open up more during the meetings”, says Sharbatz. The Music Society is just getting started, if interested, contact Mr. Sharbatz, Mr. Lambert, or Kali Eyster.

Breathing new pride into an exhausted gym by Jaelon Coleman Photographer

Woodhaven High School is known for spending money on their school, for the students, to make the school look better etc. They recently renovated a new weight room that cost a significant amount to improve our athletic facility, and now they invested in a new gymnasium. They have had the same gym for a very long time and now they are deciding to just change the whole thing. This year the gym has Warriors on the court. They also changed the rims on the basketball board, they have been switching the rims a lot lately but they still can get old, rusty, and very janky. They also made a new arrow on the court for warrior pride, and to make the basketball court a lot better. Mr. Fast the new athletic director at Woodhaven High said it was necessary to update the gym because they deserved it. He feels like

what ever we need to do to show pride to our school, and to make the athletes happy is what he wants to do. He wants to celebrate all of the successes that the basketball team

5

had. He also update the walls he put brand new banners for when, like what year they make it to the playoffs or even when the championship. The last time the basketball won the championship was when Mr. C, now the principle was the head coach for the basketball team. Last year they didn’t do to good during the regular season but they also made it to districts. “I will constantly fix or update anything that has to do with Woodhaven High school because i believe the school deserves it because of how many thing they have accomplished” said by Mr. Fast. He wants everything to be the best and also be the best in the district. Mr. Fast says “ There is also more updates coming up soon, there will be a track board, and a wrestling board inside the gym.” There is plenty more updates coming to Woodhaven High for Warrior pride, success, and gain of all the warriors working so hard to meet their goals here at Woodhaven High School.

Marching band starts off busy season by DaLesa Lee Layout Editor

The marching band has had busy season so far with competitions and preparing for homecoming. September 13th the band had their first competition at Wayne Memorial. September 20th the band had a competition in Trenton.

The band is competitions for feedback more than to compete for a position. Friday September is the last day for band members to register for the trip to New York. Saturday 27th they have a competition at Gibraltar Carlson, and one October 7th in Wyandotte. The band is also busy practicing for the upcoming homecoming game, October 3rd, where they will

be performing at the halftime show and in the bleachers during the game. In preparation for the game the band has been having regular practices. The songs band will be playing for competitions are Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog, Kashmir and Stairway to heaven. Unfortunately the band will not be attending the prestigious MCBA Festival this year.

Rize is most excited about going to the Michigan School Vocal Music Association Festival this year with the school’s choir class, but admits to being a little nervous. She wants to keep scores as high as they were in the past. So far, she seems to be meeting those expectations, noting that her student’s abilities to learn quickly and adapt are key. Her ultimate goal? Superior ratings at MSVMA and the addition of a men’s choir. Her inspiration is Jill Robinson, WHS’ previous choir teacher. Rize student taught with her last year, and is appreciative of all the help ‘JRob’ gave her. “She set me up for this,” Rize said.

Not only has Rize taken on the massive job of being the new choir teacher, she also has multiple after-school activites on her plate. She plans on having three choir concerts this year, the first coming up quickly on November 11th. Rize also will be helping with both the school musicals this year, Zombie Prom, and Once on This Island. Outside of school, she sings and plays the mandolin in an Irish folk band, enjoys going to Wayne State football games and watching Netflix. Originally from Hartland, Rize went to Wayne State University for her teaching degree. What she wants most is to have more kids join choir, go to choir concerts and just support the music program.

WHS welcomes new choir teacher by Shelby Seely Web Editor

“[Teaching

is going] wonderfully,” Ms. Chelsea Rize stated. “I have great kids.” Rize started out as a student teacher at WHS last year, and became the full-time choir teacher at the beginning of this school year. Her musical experience in high school is what led her where she is today; she had an awesome choir class with an amazing teacher. It’s her love of music that motivates her to keep doing what she is doing. If she wasn’t teaching a choir class, she would be making kilts.

Should guys ask the girls or girls ask the guys? by Kimberly Bardoni Photography Editor

Homecoming, the first dance of the year. By the time school starts it’s only a few weeks away. You need to have everything on your checklist,An outfit, tickets, and of course a date. But who should ask who? Personally I believe it is the guy’s job to ask the girl. Not to say the girls can’t ask the guys. I believe it is more traditional for the guys to ask. Now guys don’t need to do some extravagant homecoming proposal and sink in a bunch of time, money, and energy, But at least be the one to ask her. Its tradition that the guy asks the girl, it’s always been that way, so why change it? When guys ask the girl it’s usually more flattering and if anything girls will find it more manly. If you stand up and ask her she will probably think a lot more of you, also in most cases when a girl asks a guy and gets let down her self confidence plummets. As opposed to a guy who gets let down can pick himself up faster and just turn to asking another girl. In the long run it’s more of an emotional aspect for girls and harder to recover from. Overall it just seems easier for the guys to ask the girl. Put on the charm and odds are she won’t say no.

The new faces of link crew by Jocelyn Trottier Event Planner

Link Crew, the face of help for the incoming sophomores, the program designed to advise and lead new underclassmen in the right direction. This year Link Crew is now a super involved group of seniors guiding the sophomores to a fun and exciting first year in Woodhaven High. New activities being planned such as during the first week of school. Where the senior leaders and sophomores were called out of class to do some team building activities in the gym during fifth hour. Again, this year Link Crew has brought back the tailgates for the sophomores before the home football games on Friday nights, an exciting way to kick off before actual kick off. “I feel like when we first came in it was really rough but now as seniors running it it’s going a lot smoother,” said senior Steffon Agius. Overall, link crew is not so new to the school now but more so reformed. The seniors are being monumentally more involved and it’s been helping out the sophomores a lot and getting a lot of positive feedback.

by Ally Wright Co Editor-in-Chief

For years, Homecoming and other dances have been a complete ordeal with finding the right dress, learning how to tie a tie, choosing the right hairstyle and hoping everything is just right. For all this time, the daunting task of asking their date has been left to the guys, but, in 2014, that can start to change. Now, I’m not saying that girls have to ask the guy. Some people are into the traditional way, but there’s nothing wrong with changing things up a bit. If a girl has the confidence and feels comfortable enough, by all means they should be allowed to ask. Times are changing and so are gender roles so the “guy should ask the girl” mentality can be put to rest. Now, of course, the guys can still ask the girls, but they don’t have to. Not every girl has to ask their guy out, each person will feel differently and they can act accordingly. But above all the important thing to consider is the guy’s reaction. Some guys want to ask the girl, some feel like it’s the right way and others are chill about the whole thing. If a guy is into things being traditional, then (a) they might be completely turned off by a girl asking them, or (b) they’ll seem chill but in the end they spend the whole time trying to assert their dominance. Being on a date while a guy is trying to prove how manly he is will never turn out well and could easily ruin any dance, movie date or dinner. At the end of the day, asking a guy out to homecoming is harmless. It’s not like it’s illegal or anything so by all means any girl should feel free to go for it.

Teen prescription drug abuse on the rise Teens abuse prescription drugs for many reasons such as helping them focus in school, stop pain and get high. Boys and girls abuse prescription drugs for different reasons. Boys usually abuse them to get high, while most girls abuse them to stay alert and to lose weight. Data shows that 20 percent of teens who have abused prescription drugs have done so before the age of 14. 27 percent believe it’s safer than using street drugs and 23 percent say their parents wouldn’t care as much if they’re caught misusing prescription drugs as they would if they caught them using street drugs. 26 percent think prescription drugs like Adderall and Ritalin can be used to help them focus while studying.

Parents play an important role in teens using prescription drugs. One in six parents believe it safer for teens to get high using prescription drug than street drugs. Parents also make the drugs available to teens without even realizing it.Over half of teens say they can get prescription drugs right from their parents medicine cabinet and 42 percent of teens do that. Signs that someone may be abusing prescription drugs may be changes in physical health, look for things constricted pupils, dizziness and nausea/vomiting, if they start having trouble in school, such as failing classes, if you notice a change in their sleeping and eating patterns and sudden weight loss or gain.

moved to Woodhaven High School! “I wanted a different challenge,” Mr. Wilson says when asked why he transferred. He also admitted that getting out of school at 2:25 instead of 4:00 was more ideal. It is obvious that he is liked by many students already, and he knows many of them from the elementary school. I asked him how he felt, seeing all his old students, “It’s very surreal, to see so many of the students doing well. They were so little when I had them, and I’m very proud.” Mr. Wilson admits to being very nervous at first, “I’ve been lead by the staff, they’ve all been very helpful,” he says of the staff and students. “The staff has been hardened by the students, I tried to be the nice guy but quickly learned the

students would walk all over me. Its no longer elementary school and it’s a big adjustment.” He’s realized that working at the high school wasn’t going to be like elementary school, “One night, I left my ipad in the gym overnight, and Mrs Chapman told me it was going to get stolen if I kept doing that. Its not the students in particular, its just how many of them there are.” It is a big transition going from an elementary school to a high school, not only are there more people, but they are bigger and they know more about the world. Mr. Wilson teaches P.E, or lifelong fitness here at the high school. He also coaches JV baseball for Woodhaven. His expectations for the team this year is, “to catch up, it’s been twenty years and I’m also hoping for better results.” In the words of Mr. Wilson, “It’s a far cry from elementary school,” but he is ready to have a successful year, so welcome him in with open arms!

1, 2018. The increase in minimum wage in michigan effects about 4% of the 2.5 million hourly workers directly.

On September 1, or Labor day of this year (2014) something that hasn’t happened in quite a long time happened… the minimum wage in michigan had been raised to $8.15 an hour. This is just the beginning of a small incremental raise to the minimum wage in michigan until it hits $9.25 by Jan.

This whole increase in minimum wage is beneficial due to the 40 percent of Michigan households that don’t make nearly enough money to make ends meet to buy groceries to eat, to take care of children, to even take care of their own house. Although, this may not apply to those who are 16 to

Junior year ACT stress relief guide

When you think of Junior year, almost automatically you think of the ACT and all the struggles and stress that the year contains. Not sugar coating it, this is a very important year. Many juniors are already experiencing the stress and are dreading what’s to come. “I’m worried about doing good because this test predicts the rest of my future,” said Junior Anna Sampson. This seems to be the biggest worry. One test

and prepare so you’re not going in blind. Also, try and take as many practice tests as you can. Even the school offers these, just because juniors are under the stress now doesn’t mean sophomores don’t need to worry. If anything you should take the time and start preparing early, you can never start too early. In addition you have the opportunity of taking the real test somewhere else before you take it with the school. This might relieve some of the stress of taking it at school, and make you feel better that the (Continued on page 9 )

The week of a lifetime by Erika Kennedy Photographer

Homecoming week is what students look forward to all year. From the football game on Friday night where the whole school comes together to watch the game then the homecoming dance on Saturday. This is where best memories from high school come from. The week kicks off with the classes decorating their hallways to be the best, the winner gets class pride. Powder Puff is when the girls get involved to play football while the guys are the cheerleaders. The float parties is also a major part in battles of the classes. ìThis year the junior class is pretty confident on winning with their brilliant idea as the castle in the middle and a fire breathing dragon blowing down the Trenton ëTí. Next year all classes would like more people to come out hang out with their friends, eat junk food and build the float.î says Mrs. Jones. Most people think the seniors win every year

because itís there last year and most people feel bad. The junior ended up on winning the float. This year they are doing something different in Woodhaven High school history. The freshman are being bused to the high school to join us at the prep rally on Friday at the end of the day. This act makes a lot of people mad but it doesnít matter because the joy of the homecoming dance and game brings up their hopes. They are including the freshman in the floats, princess, prince, and the homecoming dance for the first time ever. Spirit week for this school year Monday Pajama pant day, Tuesday Mix & Match, Wednesday Disney Day, Thursday Class color and Friday Purple & White Day. The senior class showed the school that they have the most spirit. They won powder puff, and each spirit day they own with the most students to follow the school spirit. This week has been full of exciting events for all the different classes that will lead up to the dance on Saturday. For most freshmen and sopho-

mores the homecoming dance will be there first ever dance that they will attend. The girls on homecoming court for sophomores is Isabella Harris(10) and Biyanna France(10) and the only guy that ran was Devin Krstovski(10). The junior ladies that won court princess is Emily Dearth(11) and Lisa Luong(11). The Senior girls that are on court is Miranda Ratusznik(12), Kiah Childers(12), Hannah Jasinski(12), Haley Scott(12), and Nicole Losek(12). The senior boys on court is Steffon Agius(12), Lafranz Hemphill (12), Jacob Pryzbylo (12), Phillip Warda(12), and Grant Zvoch(12). The 2014 homecoming queen and king is Jacob Pryzbylo and Nicole Losek. All the people that ran for court looked beautiful and had the great spirits. The way to kick off homecoming is to win the game. Woodhaven is now 6-0, they won against Trenton our rivals 28-13. At the dance there was about 900 students there. This is a very amazing and memorable homecoming of 2014.

As of October 1, The Tribe is ranked number three according to The D Zone for student sections in Michigan. “Being ranked so high helps out our school,” a leader of The Tribe, senior Alex Gritz said. She came about in the game with the beach theme and everyone loved her so she became the mascot. The student section is a much bigger success than was expected and we hope to become number one WHS students show their school spirit on purple and white day of homecoming spirit week. Theatre Arts student teacher also takes on school plays by Shelby Seeley

Web Editor

“I had wonderful teachers that helped me through difficult times,” Ms. Vanessa Callanan stated when asked what made her want to become a teacher. Callanan-not-Callahan is the new theatre arts student teacher. She is also the makeup and costume head and assistant director of the fall play, Mother Hicks. “I like it. It’s hectic, but I like it.” There is talk that

she might be directing the winter play, A Christmas Carol, in December. Callanan was admittedly nervous at the beginning of the school year, but has since made a lot of new friends, feeling more confident and comfortable as the year goes on. Callanan also says graduation has been a long time coming, and is excited to get a real teaching job and continue directing. She is motivated by the idea of showing people how to communicate better; she believes good communication improves everyone’s quality of life.

Her inspirations are her old teachers and her dad, who taught her a lot, but mainly that you can recover from your mistakes, so don’t be afraid to make them. Outside of school and the play, Callanan enjoys sewing, video games, cooking, watching Jeopardy and sleeping, saying what surprised her most about this job was how tired she was. Callanan went to John Glenn High School in Westland, and is currently attending Eastern Michigan University. She is working on her second Education Communication degree in Theatre Arts.

Student teacher brings overseas expierence to WHS by Summer Patterson Exchange Editor Have you ever thought about the education in different countries and how different they are to American schools? Not wearing shoes in school and brushing your teeth after lunch are some of the differences Ms. Chelsea Miller experienced. Miller spent five months overseas in South Korea teaching English to kindergarten through sixth grade students. “Speaking and communicating with different teachers and

students was difficult at times,” says Miller. Overcoming these challenges was crucial to having a successful experience in South Korea for Miller. South Korea was an eye-opener for Miller as she explained, “Koreans think highly of Americans, and some would even come up to me in the streets and ask to practice English.” Miller thought these actions were courteous, as she stuck out like a sore thumb being the only American mixed with South Koreans. “On my free time I enjoyed going shopping to unique stores and eating the “different” cuisine,” Miller said. Today Miller is student teaching for Mrs. Meglynn MacDonald’s personal living skills class. Before attending

Eastern Michigan University, Miller spent two years at Schoolcraft Community College. She is majoring in Special Education and minoring in Health Science. “My favorite part of working at Woodhaven High School is working with older students and students being engaged in class activities,” Miller said. “Students having the ability to be hands on working in class on projects in my favorite style of teaching!” In the future Miller’s goal is to become a full time Special Education teacher. Moving in the right direction, Miller is optimistic and adapting to taking on the roll of becoming a full time teacher.

Para Mrs. Thorne is back in charge by Jace Williams Layout Editor

The school year starts with students, whether they be new or familiar faces, it’s always a fresh start, somethings seem to stay the same. Those who break the rules, or the people in in-house. The new advisor of in-house here at Woodhaven High is Ms. Cheryl Thorne, you may know her from Patrick Henry Middle School where she was a para-professional, but has done her share of enforcement. Ms. Thorne has been

a para-professional since 1995 and has loved every bit of it. Over the years she has noticed a change in culture. “Most kids just make bad choices with clothing, girls with dresses,” said Thorne. Compared to PHMS, she likes it a lot better at Woodhaven High. “Moving to the High School was my best choice in employment,” said Thorne. Some of this is due to the support she gets on enforcing the rules. “For some reason, students feel they can set their own rules,” added Thorne. Along with the support she sees less of the “regulars” here at the High School. Ms. Thorne has even seen her own daughter,

Rachel, in in-house here at the High school. “She came in and started talking like she owned the place. I said nuh-uh, you need to be quiet.” Besides Ms. Thorne’s love for work, she also likes ballroom dancing. “I know the bachata, but dabble with the salsa,” said Thorne. As you can see teachers like their free time, which is why Ms. Thorne is planning for retirement in 2017. If this is the case you better get to know her soon! “Always show respect for authority because there is always someone above you.”

13 Marching band rocks school spirit October 10, 2014 // News

by Carolyn Girard Guest Reporter

It could’ve been the smell of cheesy nachos lingering in the air, or the stampede of football players bursting through the spirit banner, but for the WHS marching band, it was the sound of ecstatic screaming. The Taylor-Kennedy vs. Woodhaven football game was set to play last Friday on the 19th at home. Pre-game and halftime shows were performed by the band, which got heaps of compliments from the crowd. The cheering and amount of support received from the student section was absolutely astounding, it was enough to drone out the drumline cadence as the band left the field. “It was amazing,” clarinet player Katie Malloy said. “It was so exciting to hear that much support coming from the student section.” So why was the student section so enthusiastic this time? Mr. Faryniarz, the director of the band explains what was

done differently this year. “I wanted to create a drill design that was different from the usual block, something that was unique and showed more school spirit,” said Director Faryniarz. “I think it’s really paid off, what we do at football games is the most important thing we do.” The whole event has been the buzz during practice and has kept the spirit running high. For years, marching band just hadn’t been getting the recognition it deserves, unlike cheerleading, or baseball. Now that the crowd is showing more support, marching band students are hoping that the band will finally have it’s moment of spotlight. “It’s a big deal because the support we get now can spread awareness for future musicians; the marching band will be a lot more confident at performances,” Malloy said. The band is looking forward to many more performance opportunities coming in the future, as well as reaching out to the community and spreading the love.

Such events include the 2014 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, the Red Wings pre-game performance, and one more closer to home, the away pep-band, which has been the newest edition to the marching band. Director Faryniarz has shown lots of excitement for this brand new edition. “Away pep-band is a group of students from each instrument section of the band that volunteered their Friday nights to play in the stands for away football games. This is a fantastic way to show and express more school spirit and just have a good time as a band. I’m very proud of my students for thinking of this great idea. I’m also very happy that they want to do more as a marching band.” The marching band has since been practicing hard after school so that they will be prepared for the next few competitions of the season, which ends soon, but they aren’t keen on stopping there. As of this spring, the band is spreading even more Woodhaven spirit, it’s a march to New York City!

life. “Running is what i like to do” said Kleam. He credits genetics, hard work, and his Coach Mike Dennisuk for his success so far in running. When asked why he runs kleam said “I do it for my dad, because he was a great runner”. Kleam hopes that running will get him a scholarship to a good college where he can compete. Without running he feels that there would be a gap that would need to be fulfilled in his life. The success probably wouldn’t have come without the supporting cast of his parents Scott and Sue Kleam. “They come to all of my meets and they

love running just like i do” Kleam says. Scott Kleam who is Logans inspiration was a good runner and Logan feels that contributes to his ability. As he plans for State Meet this year Kleam is motivated to do better than years passed by his coach, parents, friends, and teammates. “Ever since I’ve known Logan, he’s been a dedicated kid. he’s the one that got me to start running and I’ll always be grateful to him”, fellow varsity runner and friend Pavan Dave said. Kleam is a role model for his entire team and represents his school with his success.

and what you have done in the offseason are things to remember. There will be ups and there will be downs, but that is just high school football at its finest. “Everybody is excited for the game and school is a lot bet-

ing hard in the weightroom, keeping your grades up, and being a role model to your underclassmen are just a few things that can define you. “Watching film, anticipation, and work ethic are things you need to succeed on the field on Fridays,” Coach Bucata said. Bucata, who worked previously as Michigan State Spartan trainer, knows; he’s been around different high schools to share some things with us. “Every game you play is important, thats for any school,” Bucata said. On Fridays, people who play on a football team have ways to get excited and cherish the moment. Mark Dixon, a fullback for the Woodhaven Warriors, had some say in this. “We all come together as one, togetherness forms a movement, and we operate together like a machine,” Dixon said. “I will always remember the crowd at our games because they always get us excited and are like a 12th man for us.” “Fridays create school bonding, community spirit, and create a buzz in the air in whatever city you are in… It creates team unity in which you are fighting with your brothers on the field with a fist fight mentality,” Bucata said.

Logan Kleams up the competition by Anders Hindman Staff Reporter

Have you ever dedicated your entire life to something? Logan Kleam has. Kleam is attempting to make his 3rd appearance at the Michigan Division 1 State meet and he’s only a junior. If you follow downriver running then you’ve heard his name. Kleam has dominated running in his age group since he first crossed a finish line in sixth grade winning by a margin of 3 minutes. What many people misunderstand is how what a big role running plays in his

Friday night lights

by Jacob Pyrzbylo Guest Reporter

Friday Night Lights (FNL) has become a tradition for high schools and their cities where everybody packs the stands and roots for the home team. In High Schools nationwide, during a humid first couple weeks and a bitter cold rest of the season, students and parents are proud supporters of the team, while athletes try their hardest to put on a show for their community. Stands jam packed week after week, Friday after Friday, and players just leaving it all on the line and the field. Protecting their home turf and defeating their rivals, are among top priorities. Student sections, hard hits, coaches screaming, parents, and even scouts may be in the stands on that given Friday. The sweet smell of turf or grass and the brisk air is something that kids will remember. The long bus rides to the away games, the gut wrenching practices during the week,

Abuse cases affect NFL Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson face consequences by Brian Carson Copy Editor

The National Football League (NFL) season has been underway for a few weeks now but there’s been a lot of controversy since the beginning of the offseason (post Super Bowl). On March 27, 2014, then Baltimore Ravens running back, Ray Rice had been arrested and subsequently indicted for third-degree aggravated assault on then fiancée (now wife) Janay Palmer at Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Right away security tape of Rice dragging the unconscious body of Palmer out of an elevator had been released. Rice had been facing up to 3-5 years of jail time and a fine up to $15,000, until the charges were later dropped when Rice agreed to attend court-supervised counseling sessions. On July 25, Rice had received a two game suspension from the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. This struck for a

U2: It’s a gift to you by Jace Williams Layout Editor

For those of you who have an Iphone or iTunes, may have heard that the legendary band U2 have recently released a new album titled; “Songs Of Innocence.” With the new album came some new gimmicks, or ways to get the album to people. U2 and Apple thought it would be a great idea to give the album to all Apple customers for free. They even download it for you. That’s right, no purchase or manual download, it’s just on your phone. If you like U2 then you probably think this is great news, but other people beg to differ. “I hate it and want it off my phone,” said Woodhaven High School student Noah Gray. According to this student, they really aren’t fans. Some might even label this as invasion of privacy, could Apple be able to do other things on your phone? Will other bands use this method of sales? Hopefully we won’t be sent into a generation of predownloaded music.

ton of controversy from the media and fans. Most felt the suspension hadn’t been enough games for the case. After the suspension many analysts of ESPN had expressed their opinion, “This is too little of a suspension! It basically says the league has no problem with domestic abuse from its players. Goodell got this one wrong.” stated Skip Bayless on ESPN First Take the day after the suspension had been announced. The league also faced a major drop in female fans based on preseason ratings with a drop of 40% from last season, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. On September 8, TMZ released security video inside the elevator. The video shows Rice taking a swing at Palmer but missing then when she charged towards him in anger he hit her hard enough for her to be knocked out by the punch. The same day the tape was released the Ravens decided to terminate Rice’s contract and make him a free agent. A few

hours after that it was announced from the Commissioners office that Rice was suspended indefinitely. September 12 the NFL was hit with another scandal when one of the league’s biggest stars, Adrian Peterson, had been indicted with child abuse. Peterson was placed on the NFL exempt list, meaning he will be paid but will not be allowed to play until all legal issues are solved. That is unlikely until at least 2015. The league is faced with the challenge of shaping things up in the coming weeks. In just 2014 alone the NFL has had 35 players arrested for violence and use of an illegal substance. Goodell has been under fire for years now. Since taking over in 2006, 56 players have been arrested for domestic violence, 26 have been punished. For the first time, people are petitioning to have Goodell removed from office. Rice and Peterson are just some to start the fire of domestic abuse, but they are not the only ones, many others have too. It’s time to put out the fire of domestic abuse.

15 5SOS trials with new found fame October 10, 2014 // Entertainment

by Ally Wright Co Editor-in-Chief

I have never in my 17 years had more of a love/hate relationship with a band and rightfully so. 5 Seconds of Summer, consisting of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin, is a primarily pop band with little dose of rock originating in Australia, making their way to the B-list thanks to a series of fortunate events that led Louis Tomlinson of One Direction to find their Youtube and soon after the boys of 1D invited them to open on the Take Me Home Tour. These “series of fortunate events” that I speak is the rumor of Modest! Management (One Direction’s management company who has access to each of their twitters (hint hint)) signed on to co-manage 5SOS after their manager, Matt Emsel, alerted them to the band’s success following their run with Hot Chelle Rae in late 2012 (Billboard). Irwin has denied the claim on twitter after an update account tweeted about it, though this rumor still has not been corrected within the Billboard article, which was published in Apr. 5 Seconds of Summer, the band’s debut album, dropped in the US on Jul 22 with the bonus track “Miss All-American”, replacing “English Love Affair”. Music-wise, the band was better in 2013 and personal character-wise, the band was better before touring with One Direction. Masterposts scatter Tumblr as to why the 5sos boys are problematic people (there’s one for every celebrity out there, some are concrete and some are reaching). With 5sos, the one I found wasn’t too far fetched so I got lucky. The first item on the list was Clifford’s rape joke which he said during one of their Keeks. The second is the incredible amount of times he has used the words “gay” and “fag” as insults and parts of speech. Then Hood’s tattoos were brought up since he has a Native American (possibly a war head) head on his forearm. The most aggravating, but seemingly unproblematic, thing about them is their inability to take responsibility or own up to their mistakes. About a month, Hood’s nudes leaked after he was rumored to have sent them over snapchat to a 14 year old girl. After Twitter had its fun, Hood came on and instead of owning up to this screw up, he basically blew it off, calling it a mistake and saying he was young. The situation became another “boys will be boys” moment and Calum simply allowed it. On Oct 5, 5sos were in Miami for the last show on One Direction’s Where We Are Tour when a video went viral of three fans who simply wanted a quick picture. The video starts out with the three girls walking behind the band and security is trying to keep them back while Calum starts to run away from the girls to get closer to the other boys. Hemmings made two attempts to go talk to the girls with no luck because their security guard was dead set on no one meeting 5sos that day. The security guard claims that the reason was the amount of people when there were only three girls in front of him, but still pointed out girls across the street and supposedly around the corner. He also made very clear that these girls chose to buy music, he never made them. The ridiculous part was when someone went on the band Twitter and actually threw Calum under the bus, stating, “5sos isn’t just Calum Hood.” And then within an hour

Calum threw a bit of shade and called one of the girls out because he thinks fans need to respect his days off. Though everyone wants a break, the four 5sos boys have to realize what their job is now and a quick picture or two won’t kill them or simply a hug and no pictures. And by calling out that girl publicly, she was then subject to hate and death threats from within the fanbase she resides in. The situation could not have gone worse, honestly. Their first single and first song of the album, “She Looks So Perfect”, is one of the only songs on the album that doesn’t sound like their copying other artists, but it’s also one of the worst songs they’ve released along with a very disappointing video and message (the video basically consists of many people of different ages and sizes dancing around in their underwear; while the video message itself is appreciated, I’m disappointed in the continuous cycle of fans’ stories that make it obvious that 5sos does not practice this acceptance on a day to day basis). “SLSP” starts out with a decrescendo-ing guitar cord leading into the drawn out hey’s that are the bulk of much of the song. Hemmings is on vocals for the first chorus and sounds fantastic. Out of all four boys, Hemmings has the greatest vocal ability, especially live. Throughout the chorus, Hemmings can be picked out over the rest. Going into the chorus there’s a moment a peace as the drums drop out and only thing heard is the staccato strums of the guitar and builds into the chorus pick-up. The second sounds far different with an old radio-like synthesizer over Hood’s voice and very little build-up/pause before the chorus. With the chorus in mind, 5SOS used an amazing technique that gets girls across the world swooning - when speaking about this girl they’re in love with, rather than taking the third person approach that the title implied, they took a second person approach so girls feel like they’re speaking to them such as in the line, “You look so perfect standing there, in my American Apparel underwear” or “I’ve a mixtape straight out of ‘94, I’ve got your ripped skinny jeans lying on the floor.” The bridge is by far the best part of the song since it’s only Luke with a thin layer of backing guitar and drums. And the

last chorus sounds far fuller than the rest of the song and I appreciate that. From the opening notes of “Kiss Me Kiss Me”, it doesn’t seem that bad, but in the end turns out to a bit of a mess. While listening, I was distracted by everything else I was doing and in the middle of the chorus I refocused on the music I had playing and the first thing I thought was, “Why am I listening to R5?” Then I zoned out again and in the middle of the instrumental there was a breakdown nearly to Bring Me the Horizon standards in the middle of a pop rock song. It was honestly the oddest thing I’ve ever heard. “18”, an older song of theirs, is on the album and though it was one of the best songs they’ve put out and has a really good beat, it falls a little flat for me. I originally heard the song on the band’s birthday celebration live stream last year where they did the song acoustically, which sounded phenomenal, but for the album version they did it full with electric guitars, synthesizers and miscellaneous extra. The song instrumentally doesn’t live up to the amazing acoustic (but no original song lives up to the acoustic), but lyrically it’s still great. However, “Beside You” is by far the best songs on the album and possibly the best of all the music they’ve put out. It makes me rack my brain to try and figure out what song it seems to resemble but it’s still so good. After the drum beat intro it breaks into swift guitar chords that sound as if their echoing and ricocheting off imaginary walls within the headphones. Calum sings the first verse, almost unrecognizably since his voice is suddenly so much deeper and all nasal sounds diminish that were present previously. The harmonies sound crisp and Luke, as always, sounds stunning throughout the entire song. My only complaint is that the end of “Beside You” really leaves me hanging for one more hard hitting chorus. Every time I listen to it, I hope for that chorus and nothing comes. Throughout the entire album there’s a strange manufactured sound to practically everything and that’s my biggest complaint overall. 5 Seconds of Summer start their next American Tour, the Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour, in November at the AK-Chin Pavilion in Arizona.

His new album is symbolizing that he is not the typical singer/ songwriter, he is his own person and can get his point across in new ways. His album Anomaly reached No. 1 on Itunes, which would be the first time ever for a Christian Hip Hop artist. Lecrae is topping charts and making history. JV football off to a good start by Jaelon Coleman Photographer

WHS is off to a great football season with an undefeated record. When people go to a warrior football game they know that the team will not let them down. Fans seem to know that WHS will run the ball until the final whistle blows even if they are losing. Sophomore Josh Williams is back on the football team, after moving temporarily out of town. Williams was a star player on the team last year and he is looking forward to leading his team again this year. He played JV as a freshman last year as starting running back. This year he plays running back, kick return, safety, and special teams. JV runs an i-right offense for WHS and is making waves with both academic and athletic achievements. The football team is ranked 26th in the state of Michigan and currently has a 2-2-2 record and the varsity team is 6-0. JV is improving this year with the new running back and wide receivers. The team is preparing the basics to get ready to run the new varsity offense. Their defense is also really

good not allowing Kennedy to score and only allowing Truman to score once. JV has two coaches: coach Krolak and coach Nichols. Coach Krolak is the offensive coach and the one who chooses the plays for the offense to run, and coach Nichols is the defensive coach and he selects what defense does to stop the other team. “Our team is good this year, our offense running game is really good. My favorite play to run, and what I think the best is to run is our iso’s 23 and 25 iso etc,” coach Krolak said. The defense coach Nichols said, “My favorite defense to run is the 4-3 because it stops the other team from running the ball.” Kaleb Smith the fullback for JV said that the iso’s are also the best plays. Smith is a fullback, linebacker and the kicker for the WHS JV football team. JV is known for running the ball and not passing because of how good they run the ball. “The only plays the wide receivers get are mostly the bubble passes,“ said sophomore Semaj Hayes.

Sophomore Cameron Mokrenski was a great wide receiver until he was injured and is now out for the whole season. Mokrenski also played corner and was one of the best. Mokrenski had seven interceptions in the season last year playing corner. Even with his injury, JV recently beat Taylor Kennedy last Thursday 28-0, not allowing them to score a point. The team is expecting greater improvements next year with a desciplined offensive and defensive line. That doesn’t mean the JV football team doesn’thave areas they need to work on before they achieve that disciplined demeanor. This is due to the weak offensive line; if they don’t block there will be no running the ball what so ever. It’s no secret that this year the Woodhaven High School JV offensive line isn’t doing too good, but the defensive is. Last game against Kennedy, sophomore Josh Lewis had six sacks on the quarterback for the Warriors. He had to step up starting at defensive end. The next scheduled game is against Wyandotte, so hopefully the team can prepare their offense and continue their strong season.

Girls JV fight for wins with new coach by Remington Sancho Business Manager

The Woodhaven girls JV Volleyball team is feeling optimistic about this season with their new head coach, Morgan Topolewski. Coach Topolewski is a Woodhaven High School alumni, who played on the volleyball team when she attended Woodhaven. “I think it is very cool to be coaching at Woodhaven, it is such a great school and the athletic program is always one of the best in the downriver league. It’s awesome coming back, especially in the new gym!” Topolewski explained about her excitement to coaching in Woodhaven. This is her first year head coaching for the JV team. “I am very excited to be head coach at the JV level. I have been a head coach before for club ball but this is my first JV position and I am glad to be back at Woodhaven,” Topolewski said. The team is 2-3 with a first place in the Taylor Truman Invitational. Coach Topolewski doesn’t have a certain set of starting players, she believes in hard work and dedication over the week to determine her line up. Also she is still working on assigning captains to the team. Coach Topolewski is very proud of coaching this group of girls. She watches the girls joke around and get along with each other throughout practice and games. “I am very happy they are my first team,” Topolewski stated. The girls continue to work hard and dedicate themselves to the team. They all hope to get better and create team chemistry throughout the year. “Most of us have been playing together for a couple years now, it makes the team so much better when we all have fun together,” sophomore Megan Matatall said about the team. The girls are very happy with how the season is going so far, but they all think they can get better and work harder.

“I’m happy with my teams’ efforts. I think the season is going good and it’s going to get better over time,” sophomore Selena Shegitz said about the season. “I think the start of the season is going pretty good, but I feel like we will improve as the season goes on. We are starting to get used to playing together and learning our role on the team,” sophomore Hailey Green explained about the season. Not only are they happy with the season, but the girls insist on getting better and working harder. “I feel that I can get better and our team could work harder and try harder in our games,” sophomore Sam DeMaggio stated about the team’s efforts. The girls hope for the best in the future, they will continue to work hard and pursue their own personal goals. Coach Topolewski will continue to train her team and work just as hard. The team looks to win out to end the season.

Girls cross country runs passed the competition by Remington Sancho Business Manager

Coming into her fifth season as head coach, Coach Jablonski is very proud and excited with her team this year. Coach Jablonski is trying to reproduce the same statistics and successfulness as last year, by being the Downriver League Champions. Which was also their fifth straight championship. Coach Jablonski’s goals are to “continuously develop and evolve into a strong and supportive team,” also to keep the Downriver League Championship under their belt. The season is underway and the girls are proving their determination to being the champions again. With no varsity runners graduating last year, the team is looking very strong and productive, also the state qualifiers,

senior Alyson Trapp and sophomore Chloe Hoye, are back and looking to have another great season. With no captains on the team, the returning senior class, contributing Kendra Cook, Melinda Dietz, Tea Greca, Alyson Trapp and Karina Villalobos, look forward to leading the team to victory with hard work and leadership. Also new runner, senior Brianna DiMilia, is looking forward to running with her sister, freshman Isabella DiMilia this season. With three juniors, six sophomores and eight freshman on the team, the girls are looking very solid for next season as well. These 23 girls all contribute to the team’s success and play a very vital role to the girls cross country team. The girls have won their first two meets, which were the Erie Mason relay and the Warrior Classic. In the Warrior Classic, the varsity girls took first place with an average time of 20:44 in the 5,000 meter run, led by freshman Clarissa Hoye, she took first place with a time of 19:26, dusting the competition.

Also another freshman Arianna Wegienka, came in fifth place along with Chloe Hoye coming in eleventh. The JV team took third place in the Warrior Classic with an average time of 25:12, led by sophomore Jessica Hawkins coming in tenth place out of 118 runners. In the Spartan Invitational, the varsity girls took eighth place out of 37 teams which is exceptional with teams all over the state there. In the JV 5k, sophomore Chloe Watters came in tenth place with a time of 21:56 out of 552 runners. The girl’s last meet was the Downriver League Jamboree #1. Woodhaven’s JV team had 9 runners in the top 11. With the top 5 being, Chloe Watters, Karina Villalobos, freshman Macee Wilson, Jessica Hawkins and freshman Lauren Lyons. The varsity team took first place with all 7 of the runners in the top 10. This year’s team is stronger than ever and is very motivated. The girls are on a mission to beat everyone and win the Downriver League Championship.

free and freshman Sara Laforce has climbed her way to the top in both distance and sprints. The team may not be the best in the League, but they have definitely made advances on their own times. “The team may have not had many wins, but the girls have made a significant amount of best times ranging about 20 new personal records a meet,” said coach Michelle Mumau. Also the girls gain a few points from the team’s only diver senior Jocelyn Trottier. Even if its only 6 points a meet, those points can be the difference from losing and winning. She is currently training with the Allen Park Girl’s Dive

team since Woodhaven’s dive coach resigned. “We’re really doing great, the team is making significant time drops and swimming like they were at the end of last season,”said by Senior captain Brandie Olsen. The team really has a lot to be proud about even if they are not the best downriver. They are a team of hard working girls that are even dedicated enough to go to morning practices at 4:30 a.m every friday. As of now the girl’s main priority is to prepare for the final meet of the season, the Downriver Leagues. Even though the meet is a ways away, the girls are just trying their best to improve for the end.

Woodhavens starting players are senior Rasheed Patterson (WR/DB), senior Trenton Bauer (WR/DB), junior Darious Nundley (RB/DB), senior Dalton Gadwell (WR/LB), senior Nick Towianski (WR/LB), senior LaFranz Hemphill (RB/ DB), senior Evan Williams (TE/DE), senior Niko France (QB/DB), senior Rashod Johnson (WR/DB), junior Nikolas Rickard (WR/DB), senior Jacob Przybyalo (FB/LB), sophomore Jalen Wellons (RB/LB), senior Robert Duncan (OL/DL), senior Eric Dearth (OL/DL), senior Brent Graham (OL/DT), senior Alex Claringbold (OL/DE), sophomore Jacob Downey (OL/DL), senior Ian Miller (OL/DT),

Woodhaven has high expectations for this season. They would love to go to the playoffs and win the league. Woodhaven still has big games to play against both Carlson and Wyandotte. “Wyandotte is going to be a big task” said coach James Babyak. Our homecoming game is against our rivals Trenton. “ That should be a big game” said Remington Sancho.

On Sept 13, the boys attended the Zebra Classic hosted by Wayne Memorial. The team overall came in first place. Not only winning the tournament as a whole, many individuals also finished in first: senior Ryan Ford at 3 singles, junior Connor MacDonell and sophomore Josh Martin at 1 doubles, senior Daniell Dayfield and junior Kyle Moran at 2 doubles, junior Bryce Page and senior Evan Artress at 3 doubles, and juniors Curtis Florkowsi and Eddie Cash at 4 doubles. The team is working hard to make states, they have never made states, but hopefully it will change this season. Tennis can be for everyone, next season Eckert wants more

Out of these 14 girls, 6 of them are rookies, and all of them seem to have really earned their spot on the team. Junior and Rookie Airn Pero has made significant time drops in the 50

Fresh start for varsity volleyball by Summer Patterson Exchange Editor

The 2014 season of Woodhaven High School volleyball has started, you could even say it’s a fresh start to the program. With Kim Maher as the new varsity head coach, the players and fans will definitely see some changes this year. Maher has been playing the game for many years now. Since her freshman year of high school, two years at Kellogg Community College, and now recreational teams, her love for the game of volleyball is unconditional. Previously being the freshman head coach, Maher has made some changes to her coaching technique saying, “The skill level is much higher and preparing the girls for

the speed of the game is a big difference.” “Some major changes this year have included setting the focus on learning, having fun, and being positive,” Maher said. Starting off the season the Lady Warriors are 5-4, defeating teams such as Kennedy, Southgate, and Lincoln Park. The defensive specialists in the back row digging up all the hits are Christina Cobetto (4), Julia Vitale (3), Devyn Mulrany (6), and Kayla Pollick (2). Connor Camplin (5) is setting for the Warriors this year. Hitters in the front row consist of Chelsea Mclenon (14), Kelsea Green (1), Hannah Woolford (7), Emily Laforce (13), Alexis Anderson (10), Cheyenne Lacinski (11), and Summer Patterson (18). “I like being around the team and I love playing volleyball with these girls. We are more prepared and working a lot

more on different attacks this season. As a team we need to focus on energy and momentum, and the possibilities are endless” junior Christina Cobetto said. “Senior year means more than any other year. If we lose to a team there is no next year to make up for it, so we must work as hard as possible. A challenge this year is that everyone looks at seniors to pick them up when the team is down; we all need to pick each other up,” senior Kayla Pollick said. “The Southgate game has been the highlight of my season so far. It was really exciting going into five games with them, and we all had a positive attitude and worked together well as a team, junior Devyn Mulrany said.    Find these girls in action Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm.

qualify for the state meet,” Dennisuk said. After a couple opening season invitationals coach Dennisuk feels there is progress being made. However, he also stated, “We have very little wiggle room if we want to reach our goals”. Dennisuk has made it a separate goal as a coach this year to educate his runners better on what they are doing. “Instead of saying go run this workout and run it so you feel like this, I am now providing them with pace charts.” Pace charts are a tool the team is now using to know exactly what pace to run each workout at, and, Dennisuk believes this will be a positive thing for the teams progress.

Outside the training aspect of cross-country, the Woodhaven team has come up with the Nine Pillars of WHS Cross-country. The pillars are the core values of the the team set up by the leaders and upperclassmen. “I want me worrying about the training, but I want the kids to take responsibility for the other aspect of being a team,” Dennisuk says. During the pre-season the team wrote down their core values and this list became the Nine Pillars. Dennisuk said he is confident in the WHS cross country team’s ability and the boys are practicing everyday, working towards their goals with hopes of exceeding them.

Andrew Boardman (Senior). These students are not only role models to their team, but to other athletes in Woodhaven. On Wednesday September 24, the boys played the closest game of the season against Truman. The game went through both overtimes and into penalty kicks. Josh Roman, David Camarena, Trevor Deon, and Deavyn Dishroon all scored to bring home the win. Now after a great win over truman, the Warriors have to play every game with their highest potential. In order to finish first in the league, Woodhaven must go undefeated for

the rest of the season. The Warriors need Trenton and Melvindale to be defeated at least one game so they can bring Woodhaven the title of League Champions. Coach Hoye has done an excellent job showing the kids how to play possession oriented soccer. “What the team lacks in size, we make up for in skill and passion for the game,” junior Deavyn Dishroon replies after feeling content with his season so far. Woodhaven now will do everything in their power to become champs, make the city proud, and stay ‘Warrior Strong’.
