Gripple has been singled out for a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation, recognising its game-changing trapeze bracket solution Fast Trak, which is driving efficiency in the construction industry.

Employee-owned, Gripple works across 85 countries worldwide, including seven manufacturing sites in South Yorkshire and is one of only 59 businesses in the UK to be chosen for this year’s King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation.

The projects, people and trade issues making the news

Awarded for Fast Trak, its innovative prefabricated bracket system, which is used to suspend mechanical and electrical services in construction applications, the award recognises Gripple’s dedication to driving efficiency and sustainability in construction, helping customers do more with less by solving real-world challenges with simplified engineered solutions. Its innovative design allows for easier, faster and safer installation than traditional rod and strut, making it invaluable in supporting major construction projects.

Revolutionising the speed and efficiencies at which projects can be delivered it comes at a time when productivity, a key determiner of innovation, has traditionally remained below the UK average in construction with the sector relatively unchanged in the past 50 years.

Ed Stubbs, managing director at Gripple, said: ““We solve customers’ real-world problems. That’s the brief. Whatever the application, our innovations deliver faster, safer solutions to make routine tasks easier. Driving efficiency is crucial in UK construction. Making a difference on-site, on the ground and in the hands of those at the forefront of new construction ensures our products make a real difference. This award is a recognition of that commitment and of the hard work and passion of each of our employee-owners in helping customers do more with less.”

New Unicrimp showroom welcomes its first visitors

Unicrimp, part of the Scolmore Group of companies, has welcomed the first visitors to its newly opened showroom at its headquarters in Staffordshire. Launched by Scolmore Group in 2014, Unicrimp has continued to enjoy success with its comprehensive range of cable accessory products and the requirement to invest in a visitor centre and showroom resource became a high priority. As well as showcasing Unicrimp’s ever-expanding range of cable accessories, it will serve as a venue to host a range of events including internal meetings and presentations, product launches and demonstrations, as well as training sessions for customers.

Since launch ten years ago, the Unicrimp range has been continually developed and expanded, and currently comprises three distinct product categories, with each one marketed under its own sub brand and all available exclusively through the electrical wholesaler channel.

Visitors to the new showroom facility will have the opportunity to get a close up look at the

key products from across each range which are on display, as well as the most recent additions which include new trade tubs, armoured industrial brass cable glands and nylon cable glands, earthing plates and black and grey PVC cable sleeving. The displays also show how various Unicrimp products work in conjunction with other products from across the Scolmore Group, such as the cable ties, nylon meter tail glands and grommet strip trim roll with the Elucian consumer units, and the metal clad switches and sockets.

Toolstation and partners help transform Lambeth Boxing Club with Volunteer it Yourself (VIY)

Toolstation has joined forces with social enterprise Volunteer It Yourself (VIY) for its latest project, transforming the Traffic Light System Boxing Club in Lambeth, London. The club was established by local boxing coach and carpenter Richard Vassel in August 2022.

Richard has taken two years out to transform the gym himself, which had been derelict for over 20 years, and enlisted the help of the local community to help including sourcing and upcycling equipment. The gym aims to use boxing to help transform the lives of individuals in the community, with regular classes for different age groups and for those with special educational needs.

VIY’s work over the last few weeks saw them help put the finishing touches to the club, including fitting specialist flooring, creating bench seating for the boxing hall, tiling the bathroom spaces and the ice bath room, and painting and decorating throughout the club.

The initiative is helping more young people learn DIY skills and to consider a career in the construction and building industry, whilst renovating a space they may use and benefit from. Toolstation is funding and helping the volunteers gain City & Guilds qualifications as part of its partnership with VIY. The project saw 26 young volunteers between the ages of 14 to 24, including ESOL learners from ELATT college, Lambeth Council’s Back on Track employability service and the local JobCentre come together and spend a total of 15 days work on the project, with all participants being awarded a City & Guilds accreditation in Painting and Decorating and Health and Safety.

The project was also co-funded by Lambeth Council and Sport England, with the Powerday Foundation donating equipment to get the club up and running and Dulux donating the paint.

The local Travis Perkins Vauxhall branch also donated timber to support the club’s progress earlier in the year.

Rupert Nichols, Customer and Commercial Director at Toolstation said: “At Toolstation, we believe that supporting communities involves creating positive change where it’s needed most. Partnering with VIY means we can help improve living conditions and share valuable skills with the young volunteers from the local area. We believe that this project will encourage young people to develop confidence and learn practical trade and building skills and to consider a career in the trade.”

EDA State of the Sector Survey for Q2 2024 EDA UPDATE

The latest EDA State of the Sector Survey for Q2 2024 reveals wholesaler plans for the green technologies and heat pumps market, as well as wider thoughts and predictions on the performance of the sector for 2024

Wholesalers had their say on the potential of the renewable energy products and heat pumps market as part of the latest Q2 State of the Sector Survey 2024 published in April. This was one of several areas explored as part of the Association’s quarterly survey circulated to business leaders at wholesalers and manufacturers in the EDA. This quarter EDA businesses were also asked to feedback on turnover levels, trade credit insurance challenges, general business challenges, changes in demand by sector, any continuing demand for fluorescent lamps and for which type of project.

The Survey was circulated in April to the business leader in each of the EDA’s 261 wholesaler member companies: 105 companies responded representing a response rate of 40 per cent.

Results of the survey were first shared at the EDA’s ‘Talking Shop’ online meeting attended by 100 people on Wednesday 24 April and then made available online to members via the EDA website. In this article we’ve handpicked a few highlights to share with you.

BUSINESS HEADACHES: ARE YOU EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUES?

Elsewhere in the survey, wholesalers shared their top operational challenges and in April the results showed:

1. A downturn in demand

2. The impact of increases in National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage on overall wage bill

3. Attracting and retaining staff

LOUD AND CLEAR: A HIKE IN WAGE BILLS ACROSS THE SECTOR

Elsewhere in the survey, following April’s increases in the National Living Wage and the National Minimum Wage, wholesalers and

manufacturers had plenty to say about the pressure on their salary bill. Here is just a flavour of the type of responses received:

“We will not be employing new people as the increase is the wages we would pay two extra staff members.”

“Try to increase turnover.”

“Stop hiring, be more efficient.”

“Increase in product sales prices.”

“We have adjusted salary structures accordingly as we do not want to be perceived as a min wage employer.”

WHAT ARE THE SECTOR’S PERFORMANCE PREDICTIONS FOR 2024?

The EDA survey asks wholesalers to predict the year’s performance: in April’s results 46 per cent

of wholesaler respondents anticipated like-for-like sales in 2024 to be on a par with 2023, with 34 per cent predicting lower sales and 20 per cent higher sales. Let’s see what July’s results tell us.

What would your advice be for others thinking of entering the awards?

Go for it! I believe it is important for any business to be able to showcase themselves and tell the market of their positive contributions to the industry.

SURGE PROTECTION

Surge protection: FAQs

As a specialist in the field of surge protection, I have seen a massive increase in the use of SPDs over the last five years, since the introduction of BS7671:2018. This has led to some confusion and, unfortunately, also some misinformation. Hopefully, answering the below frequently asked questions will help to clear some things up.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPD’S USED FOR?

Type 1 – Protection against direct lightning, to be used on installations where there is a risk of a direct lightning strike entering the electrical system, such as a building with an external lightning protection system or an overhead supply.

Type 2 - Protection against indirect lighting effects and switching surges, to be used on any installation (other than those listed above) where surge protection is required.

Type 3 – Protection against switching surges for sensitive equipment. A type 3 device will protect a specific piece of equipment and should be installed locally to that equipment.

WILL AN SPD NEED REPLACING AFTER EVERY SURGE?

WHY

DO SOME MANUFACTURERS NEED AN MCB BEFORE THE

SPD?

According to BS7671, all SPDs shall be protected from overcurrent, this can be done with an MCB or an internal fuse. As a specialist we specify the use of MCBs with all of our devices. The MCB will provide a back-up in case of a failure within the SPD, while also protecting the cable and giving a point of isolation for the SPD.

WHAT SIZE MCB DO I NEED FOR THE SPD?

No, an SPD is deigned to take multiple surges and internally reset after each over voltage. An SPD will only need changing at the end of its life (the warranty is manufacturer dependent) and this will be shown in the status indication on the front of the unit.

WHAT IS THE 10-METER RULE?

Surge protection should be considered on each DB. The 10-meter rule is used within large complex installations to ensure that any sub distribution boards installed within 10 meters of the SPD do not require protection. An additional SPD would only be used if the sub board was more than 10 meters away. The same rule can be applied be sensitive equipment, so if you have very sensitive equipment within 10 meters of the DB, no additional SPD is required, but it if was over

10 M then a type 3 SPD could be considered to provide a better protection level. It is less applicable in smaller simple electrical installations, such as standard domestic installations.

DO I NEED TO INSTALL TYPE 3 DEVICES IN A DOMESTIC INSTALLATION?

Usually, no. The type 2&3 on the consumer unit provides an enhanced level of voltage protection for the installation. Type 3 devices would only be used in specific specialist circumstances such as in more complex domestic installations. If the installation is overhead supplies, this should be a type 1,2&3 combined SPD installed as close to the origin as possible, not within the consumer unit.

This will depend on the manufacturer of SPD you are installing. For our devices, usually we would recommend a 32A with most Type 2 SPDs and a 63A with most Type 1 SPDs. These should always match the phases of the SPD, so if you have a three phase supply, it will need a three phase MCB and a three phase SPD.

CAN I INSTALL YOUR SPD WITHIN OTHER MANUFACTURERS DISTRIBUTION BOARDS?

Yes, an SPD is not designed to sit on the busbar, and should be protected via an MCB. Therefore, the distribution board, is protected by that MCB, the SPD sitting on the din rail makes no difference to the installation

If you need any further assistance or have any questions you would like me to clear up, please feel free to get in touch on 01484 851 747 or info@surgedevices.co.uk

Making digital commerce affordable for wholesalers

Wholesalers can now offer their customers an ‘Amazon-style’ sales experience following the launch of a new affordable app-building service that is set to revolutionise the industry by making digital commerce accessible for businesses of all sizes.

Designed to help suppliers better connect with their customers, the customisable ‘Off

The Shelf’ platform has been launched by DueTrade, a technology company helping B2B wholesale businesses to embrace digitalisation. The platform supports those in the industry who want a more efficient way of trading with customers - without the hefty price tag associated with developing a bespoke app.

The new cost-effective platform allows them to trade goods, share promotions, offer 24/7 ordering, and improve brand awareness through a simple, user-friendly ordering app that doesn’t cost the earth.

As latest research shows that 83 per cent of B2B decision-makers prefer using self-service tools for reordering rather than talking to a sales representative, and 73 per cent of B2B buyers want a B2C like experience. DueTrade’s new platform gives businesses the opportunity to improve customer experience, increase revenue and create a competitive advantage.

Henry Dewing, founder and director at DueTrade said: “Digital commerce is rapidly becoming the preferred way for buyers to complete B2B purchases and customers are increasingly expecting a ‘consumer-style’ sales experience when buying from wholesalers. That said, developing a totally bespoke app can cost anywhere between £35,000 - £100,000,

Henry Dewing , founder and director at DueTrade

which makes it an impossible investment for many in the industry.

“We have launched our ‘Off The Shelf’ service to make sales apps accessible for businesses of all sizes. This white-label option costs a fraction of the price compared to a bespoke app, but still allows suppliers the opportunity to put themselves in their customers’ back pockets. Companies that invest in this technology will have a competitive advantage in the marketplace by being able to transact faster, increase revenue and manage their portfolios online.”

Rather than processing sales manually, either in person, over the phone or via email, customers can place orders at the click of a

button via the app. Ordering can be done at any time or day, with quick and easy payment. Buyers use secure profiles to save delivery and payment details for easy reordering and can view their order history, pending orders, favourites and the status of deliveries, for a totally seamless sales experience. By fully integrating with existing sales, accounting and stock monitoring software, the platform saves valuable time and resources for both the end customer and supplier sales teams.

For wholesalers, the app can help increase trade orders, enhance customer relationships and save time on inbound enquiries. Customers are updated in real-time with the latest offers and promotions, while the app can be customised with bespoke branding to strengthen brand awareness and ensure each app looks cutting edge.

The DueTrade Off-The-Shelf app platform can be used by B2B wholesale businesses in all industries. Wholesalers, breweries, grain traders, millers, food suppliers, builders’ merchants, lumber merchants, butchers and fishmongers are among the wide range of businesses which can also benefit from offering an ordering app.

How the red sea disruption is affecting industry

With several big shipping companies diverting their routes away from the Red Sea due to current conflicts, the delivery of shipping containers and consumer goods is taking longer than usual. As a result of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, the Houthi group in Yemen – who is openly backing Hamas – has said it is attacking all ships heading towards Israel. However, it is unclear whether all the targeted vessels are actually travelling to Israel, meaning many shipping firms have opted to avoid the busy shipping lane altogether.

In fact, over the past few months, a number of Maersk and MSC container ships have been assaulted by Houthi rebels, which has reinforced the importance for shipping companies to map out alternative routes for the security of their crew members and container cargo.

What does this mean for businesses awaiting commercial deliveries? Cleveland Containers explains how the Red Sea disruptions are affecting industries across the country.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE RED SEA?

Since the beginning of the Israel-Hames conflict in October 2023, Houthi rebels have been launching rockets and drones against

of the industries that has to tackle the harsh consequences of the ongoing situation, too. For example, at the start of 2024, big automakers such as Volvo, Tesla, and Suzuki had to suspend some production across Europe because of shortages in components.

In particular, the UK manufacturing sector has witnessed a decline in operations in recent times, and the Red Sea problems have contributed to hindering the situation even further. As of January 2024, its purchasing managers’ index (PMI) stood at 47.0, with any reading below 50 indicating a contraction.

The current delays are prolonging expected deliveries, causing disruptions to production schedules and increasing financial pressures at a time when companies are already struggling to make ends meet.

THE ADDITIONAL COSTS BEHIND THE RED SEA DISRUPTIONS

foreign-owned ships navigating through the strait of Bab al-Mandab. This is a 20-mile wide channel separating Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula side and Eritrea and Djibouti on the east African coast.

Andrew Thompson, chief executive officer of the Cleveland Group, said: “Generally, ships enter the strait of Bab al-Mandab from the south to cross the Red Sea and reach the Mediterranean via Egypt’s Suez Canal.

“But the threat of potential attacks has forced global shipping firms to amend their itineraries, with vessels now cruising around the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) and then all the way up the west side of the continent.

“This is causing severe delays to shipping deliveries, as the alternative route can extend transit times to at least two or three weeks. And, in turn, the delays are also having a knock-on effect on the operations of sectors and companies all over the UK, impacting stock availability and delivery pricing.”

WHAT SECTORS ARE BEING AFFECTED?

Many sectors, such as retail and construction, are being significantly affected by the Red Sea disruptions, as companies deal with supply chain logjams due to the rerouting of deliveries. Manufacturing is no doubt one

The ongoing disruption in the Red Sea means that the cost of delivering goods worldwide is increasing, too. The forced change in route has increased sailing times by 30 per cent, leading to a rise in fuel consumption and extended work shifts for ship crews. Not to mention that shipping companies are facing additional port fees as vessels need to stop more often along the way, as well as higher freight expenses.

So, ultimately, this is why businesses across the UK are currently having to spend more money on the delivery of products, items, and materials to keep their operations going.

It is also worth noting that the delays of goods leaving China and other parts of the world are escalating demand and impacting availability. Some sectors might be experiencing significant stocking issues, whereas others may not have the materials they need to fuel their processes.

In short, the Red Sea disruptions are causing a slowdown in production, resulting in lower output and an overall loss in revenue for companies all over the country. As things stand, the threat of Houthi attacks on vessels in the Red Sea is setting back transit times, increasing shipping costs, and putting the financial wellbeing of several sectors to the test.

While it is difficult to make predictions at this stage, the hope is that the situation will ease over the coming months to restore some sort of normality worldwide.

How wholesalers can build customer loyalty with technology

The growth of online marketplaces means that electrical wholesalers’ ability to provide products on time, and at a competitive price, is critical to business operations. But as competition between wholesalers grows, so do customers’ expectations.

To keep up with the demand for convenient online shopping experiences, electrical wholesalers are finding themselves increasingly reliant on technology to streamline operations and enhance the customer experience. For traditional wholesalers, keeping pace with the demand for digital solutions is paramount to avoid being left behind. However, while technology undoubtedly brings about efficiency gains, wholesalers must strike the right balance between its implementation and retaining the human touch. Failure to do so can have long lasting consequences, with our research finding that nearly half (47 per cent) of consumers have stopped purchasing from a business altogether following a negative customer service experience. This impact doesn’t stop at personal experiences, as nearly a third (31per cent) of consumers have also told their friends or family to avoid a brand due to a negative experience.

To avoid causing irrevocable damage to customer relationships and losing future business, below we’ll explore how with thoughtful implementation, electrical wholesalers can leverage technology to build trust and foster meaningful connections with their customers.

ADDING VALUE WITH AI

According to the latest Customer Service Index from the Institute of Customer Service, customers respond positively when technology adds genuine value to the service they receive.

A significant 35 per cent of customers cite positive experiences with technology as a driving factor in their decision to continue using a particular organisation. With 45 per cent expressing avoidance of organisations due to poor use of technology, this highlights the critical importance of deploying technology in a manner that enhances, rather than detracts from the customer experience.

One of the most common technological tools used in customer communications are AI chatbots, with our research finding that nearly half (44 per cent) of people would be happy to deal primarily with AI-powered customer service bots, provided the technology

To create a positive customer experience with technology, the key lies in keeping human oversight and empathy at the forefront. While artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant strides in mimicking human interactions, it still falls short of replicating the nuanced understanding and genuine empathy that humans bring to the table. “

progresses sufficiently. Particularly as over half (57 per cent) of consumers believe that long waiting times are the main component of a bad customer service conversation, the roundthe-clock availability provided by chatbots can

be an effective method to provide customers with swift problem resolution. However, they can quickly turn to sources of customer frustration when not programmed and utilised effectively. For example, if electrical wholesalers force customers to rely entirely on online methods of support without the option of speaking to a human consultant, they risk leaving customers feeling undervalued. With a growing number

However, to create a positive customer experience with technology, the key lies in keeping human oversight and empathy at the forefront. While artificial intelligence (AI) has made significant strides in mimicking human interactions, it still falls short of replicating the nuanced understanding and genuine empathy that humans bring to the table. Customers want to feel listened to, and they

more complex cases, or those that chatbots are unable to resolve.

FINDING THE RIGHT BALANCE

By implementing diligent governance measures, organisations can harness the capabilities of technology to efficiently solve customer problems while freeing up staff resources to focus on building authentic relationships. For electrical wholesalers, this might mean programming chatbots to handle routine enquiries and basic troubleshooting. Given AI’s ability to rapidly analyse data, it can also be incredibly helpful for tailoring online experiences to the individual customer. For example, it can use customers’ previous searches and interactions to suggest products that are most relevant to them. Equally, it can sift through feedback from surveys, product reviews, and social media platforms to pinpoint recurring discussion points, which businesses can utilise to enhance future customer experiences.

By streamlining these actions, human agents are supported to step in for more intricate requests that require personalised attention. For example, as the rising cost of materials continues to cause challenges for electrical contractors, experienced customer service agents are better equipped to navigate potential pricing negotiations than AI alternatives. However, automation technologies can be incredibly helpful for assisting human agents when preparing to engage with customers. Prior to speaking with customers, the technology can extract key information from the initial enquiry and assign tasks by level of importance to ensure the most urgent matters are resolved first.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH

Organisations must recognise that implementing additional technologies for customer communications isn’t just an opportunity to resolve issues, but a chance to make customers feel valued and understood. However, this ultimately requires nuanced approach that cannot be achieved by technology alone.

deserve a personalised experience that best suits their needs. That’s why electrical wholesalers must manage the provision of chatbots and AI support with human customer service agents that can provide support on

With our research revealing that 86 per cent of consumers consider their relationship with a brand to have been negatively impacted by a poor customer service conversation, electrical wholesalers must understand the importance of providing customers with both genuine human empathy and streamlined, automated solutions. Not only does this allow customer service representatives to better serve the needs of their customers, but it also enables them to navigate competition within the wider industry by building greater loyalty and trust amongst customers.

Stamp out electrical injuries with the right safety footwear

Meeting European safety standards can seem arduous but – as a comparison with US standards on protective footwear for electrical hazards shows – it can be the difference between life and death.

The standards for PPE in the UK and EU are extremely demanding. For industry professionals who are obliged to follow these standards, they might sometimes feel like an unnecessary burden. However, it is important to remember that they have been put in place for a very good reason.

Protection against electric currents offers a prime example. Electricity can travel long distances, especially in wet conditions, and presents a risk of serious injury or death. The Health and Safety Executive’s construction statistics in Great Britain for 2023 show 6 per cent of fatal injuries over the 2018/19 to 2022/23 period were caused by contact with electricity or electrical discharge.

Safety shoes play a vital role in protecting against electrical hazards, so it is important that they are manufactured according to the highest standards.

SELECTING THE CORRECT SAFETY FOOTWEAR

Workers faced with electrical hazards will generally be required to wear insulating footwear along with other insulated PPE. The footwear must be made with dielectric materials that serve to prevent the currents passing through the body.

Safety shoes may be marked with ‘C’ (partly conductive) or ‘A’ (anti-static) under EN ISO 20345:2022. Conductive footwear helps to dissipate static away and has an electrical resistance of up to 0.1 Megaohms. Anti-static footwear is used to dissipate electrostatic charges to the ground and has an electrical resistance between 0.1 and 1,000 Megaohms. However, neither is designed to offer adequate protection for those working with electrical hazards.

In the UK and Europe, PPE for protection against electric currents belongs to category III products (Category 3 PPE: life-threatening risk, protects against the risk of death) according to the PPE Regulation 2016/425 In addition to the type approval, there must also be

an agreement on quality monitoring with a notified body.

In the European body of standards, EN 50321-1 is currently the only one that deals with the electrical insulation of footwear. Under EN 50321-1, insulating footwear for live working must pass stringent tests in order to qualify for a “double triangle” symbol. The standard covers a range of six classes from “00”, which allows for a maximum working voltage of 500V, to “4”, which allows for a maximum working voltage of 36kV.

TEST STANDARDS

To meet the requirements for a double triangle marking under EN 50321-1, polymer boots or overshoes are prescribed. Rubber boots may be uncomfortable but, if you strike an electric cable, they will provide the best protection. Sewn shoes made of leather or similar materials are completely excluded as they will conduct electricity when they become wet. The footwear must be tested in a water bath to assess its insulating properties. The soles must also pass this conductivity test after being penetrated by a nail to ensure they will protect users even in the event they become perforated. Only footwear that meets this

standard has a presumption of conformity in the sense of the PPE regulation.

By comparison, the standards in countries including America and Australia are less rigorous. The American ASTM standard is used to determine the dielectric strength of a shoe sole and results in a “EH” (electrical hazard) marking, but the test process does not require the sole to be penetrated. In addition, while EN 50321-1 requires the material to be polymer, the ASTM standard allows for the use of a recycled plastic upper that can be vulnerable to melting. As such, the ASTM standard is not valid in Europe and does not have a presumption of conformity with the PPE regulation.

Despite this, some suppliers are using the ASTM standard as a route to market in the UK – leaving unwitting users exposed to unnecessary risks. Anyone purchasing or wearing footwear to protect against electrical hazards should therefore take the time to ensure that the products have been certified under EN 50321-1.

SAFETY FIRST

At uvex, we do not supply footwear that meets the requirements for protection against electric current under PPE category III. Our safety footwear is all certified to category II only and should not be used in workplaces that feature electrical hazards.

Ultimately, it’s about education. Protecting people is our mission, our responsibility and our passion. We want to help build awareness – and ensure that workers always have the best possible protective equipment for the specific hazards they face.

The importance of illuminating jobsites effectively LIGHTING FOCUS ON

Working in dimly lit spaces is a necessity for every electrical professional, and of course, darker environments come hand in hand with increased health and safety issues to contend with, no matter how meticulous you are.

Poor lighting conditions can create an uncomfortable working environment with higher risk of eye strain, headaches, reduced concentration, not to mention have a negative effect on the quality of the finished project.

But the challenges of working in darker spaces be combatted with effective lighting. The source of this light is just as important as the tools being used on the job – if not more so. There’s much more to consider than just having a reliable light source.

As an electrician, both hands will often be in use. But with less natural light available, portable lighting may also throw up unwanted shadows if placed incorrectly. This is where neck lights can be invaluable; not only do they provide an always-on light source for workers, but they will always illuminate where the user is looking so both hazards and the focus of the job should be lit properly. What’s more they can offer differing modes, from spotlight to wide field, providing more versatility for the job in hand.

Let’s take the colour reflection of a light as another example. Artificial light sources are designed to reproduce the colours of natural

daylight and therefore make objects appear the same colour. However, their ability to do so differs drastically. For example, an LED lamp and natural daylight might have the same colour temperature but depict an object in different colour tones because their spectral composition (the wavelengths of colour and their density coming from the light source) are different.

Why is this important? Well, imagine an electrician shining an LED light into a dark cavity with a large number of multi coloured wires and struggling to determine which are the red wires and which are the brown wires –something which could be critical for the job, or critical for the safety of the electrician.

In natural light, a red wire would appear red because it reflects that colour and absorbs the rest of the colours in the spectrum. With an LED light, because the spectral composition is different to natural light (i.e., it could the lacking in red compared to the colour spectrum in natural light), the red wire may appear an orangey brown because different wavelengths of colour are being absorbed and reflected. This is where electricians should be looking beyond just practical elements, such as the portability, price, and margin of their light offerings. A light’s performance on the Colour Rendering Index (CRI), which measures and compares the reflected colour of an object under artificial lighting, should be equally as important.

Working with a panel of trade professionals to find the right solutions for on-the-job problems,

C.K Tools has developed six new, top-of-the range, IP rated products designed to tackle a multitude of situations for trade professionals. Three new Inspection Lights boast robust, durable bodies, supreme battery life, the latest charging technology and ultimate flexibility whether held, magnetised or hooked to an object, or standing tall on a swivel base.

Meanwhile, two new C.K Tools Site Lights join the top-flight of worksite lighting options, with the T9740 capable of 5,000lm, and the T9741 reaching a spectacular 10,000lm. These waterproof, dustproof lights are built for maximum durability in the toughest of environments and will flood any area with light. With battery life reaching up to 120 minutes and colour rendering index to ensure ultimate safety when working with coloured electrical wire – essential for safe, hardworking jobsites.

Finally, C.K Tools’ new T9429USB Neck Light is a game-changing piece of kit for close work. A steadier alternative to a head light, the Neck Light cradles the neck with an ergonomic comfort band and drapes lightly over the shoulders using multi-angle adjustable arms that bend into a secure position. On each arm is a torch and a mode selection switch, allowing varying options for different scenarios. On the back of the comfort band, a tripod mount point and two magnets turn the Neck Light into a multi-use product for a range of scenarios.

With all this in mind, electricians should consider the lights they use to illuminate their jobs just as important as the lights they install.

Solar power lighting the way LIGHTING FOCUS ON

Mike Collins , managing director at Ovia , looks at the role of solar powered street lighting and highlights some of the products for wholesalers

According to global market research company, Market Research Future (MRFR), the global Solar Street Lighting Market size was valued at USD 1.38 billion in 2021 and is projected to grow to USD3.96 billion by 2030, exhibiting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14 per cent during the forecast period (2022-2030).

Reducing environmental pollution and the sustainability of solar radiant energy are key drivers enhancing the market growth. Along with the fall in the price of solar lighting solutions, the rise in smart cities across the globe is another major driver of the growth of the solar street lighting market.

In Europe solar street lighting market accounts for one of the largest market shares due to advanced technology and efficient distribution network, reducing environmental pollution, and the low cost of maintenance during its operation. The German solar street lighting market held the largest share, with the UK solar street lighting market being the fastest growing market in the European region.

Solar is widely considered to be the most effective form of renewable energy, and the technology is advancing every day. Solar street lights provide complete independence from the power grid, and, due to low maintenance and minimal operator costs, solar lighting has emerged as a popular and reliable source to power street lights.

In comparison to traditional street lighting, solar street lights operate independently, powered by renewable solar energy. These street lights depend on photovoltaic cells, which are responsible for absorbing solar energy during the daytime and charging a rechargeable battery. These cells convert solar energy into usable electrical energy that can power the lamps during the night.

There are many benefits to solar street lighting with the main advantages being their energy efficiency and the ability to provide significant cost savings over time. Conventional street lights are dependent on electricity from the grid, which is often generated from non-renewable sources and can therefore contribute to air pollution. Other benefits include no cabling or excavation, resulting in easy installation and no risk from

power outages. Although the initial investment in solar lighting may initially be slightly higher, there are long-term advantages. They require minimal ongoing operating costs, thanks to independence from the electrical grid, and require little or no maintenance.

OVIA SOLAR SOLUTIONS

As business and home owners continue to deal with the dual challenge of high energy prices and environment pressures, Ovia has been working on a range of solar power lighting solutions and the company added its first solar products towards the end of last year.

Harnessing the power of the sun is a solar powered LED security floodlight and two solar powered LED street lights which have been designed to bring together cutting edge technology and elegant design and blends functionality with environmental responsibility. The Zontor solar powered LED streetlight is a powerful 40W or 15W solar panel with advanced LED technology, resulting in an outstanding lumen output (4,800 lumen on the 40W model and 1,600 lumen for the 14W model.) It casts a crisp 4,000k colour temperature glow and the light can be adjusted 20 ° up and 10 ° down for solar

charging. Designed to thrive in the most demanding of environments, its IP65 rating ensures unwavering performance. The Zontor features a slim and modern, patent design and the light can be adjusted.

Forming part of Ovia’s floodlighting range

Zonne is the name given to a new solar LED security floodlight which has a radiant 8W output, casting a crisp 4,000k temperature glow at an impressive 950 lumens. The fitting is IP65 rated, and it has a charge time of 5-6 hours to fully charge and has two working modes – Mode A: 3~5 Nights and Mode B: 2~3 Nights. It is designed to be installed at a height of four metres and comes with three metres of connection cable.

The Zonne is equipped with an adaptable solar panel that can be easily adjusted. As a very handy, additional feature, the Zonne fitting can be disconnected and used as a torch.

Solar LED street lights work in all areas, making them ideal for environments with limited access to power. In addition, the portable and environmentally friendly nature of a solar LED street light can make them an excellent replacement for ordinary street lights and a good option for areas with no access or limited access to an electrical grid.
