The Intersection of Literature and Technology in today's Digital Age
-Supraja Chellam
The present era is dominated by technology, and it has become an inseparable part of human lives. Technology has impacted in all domains, and literature is no exception.
As literature and technology are evolving together in this modern world, there is an increasing influence of digital landscapes on literary practices. This intersection opens up new innovation and some unique challenges to look after.
Access to literature and literary materials has become easier today. The intersection has enabled efficient networking among the writers and readers. Writers are able to self-publish their works and reach global audiences and a wide-spread readership.
Readers are able to receive instant access to rare manuscripts due to the digitalization of various literary pieces due to this global connectivity. The internet is inundated with literary information today. The writers face the challenge of digital piracy, while readers' access to misinformation is at stake. In this case, this intersection is compelling us to expose ourselves to digital literacy.
Technology has enabled the opening of a new creative horizon with interactive and immersive storytelling with AI-powered tools like Grammarly to aid the required flow in writing, AI-generated images along with the stories to peak into the author's imaginative world, readers able to read stories curated with elements they prefer the most, and helping authors to brainstorm their ideas of the literary works through AI models and chatbots.
On the contrary, the use of AI models poses a debate about originality and authorship. There is a widespread concern over the prevalence of over dependence on AI tools that could diminish the writing skills of an individual.
Online platforms and virtual book clubs have broken down geographical barriers. At the same time, today's write-ups tend to be more popularity-oriented than focused on quality.
Readership is increasingly influenced by reviews and advertising, leading to a constant degradation in the quality of writing and genuine literary appreciation.
This intersection is rapidly evolving, and it is inevitable. It is vital to embrace the benefits that technology offers and simultaneously critically address the hurdles it presents us. Humans survive and dominate due to their quality of adaptation.
Thus, it is essential to cultivate a mind-set to understand the innovation it offers, to ease through the hurdles, and to preserve the integrity of literature in all its forms.
