Being independent is one of the significant requirements in today’s world. As maturity starts kicking in, it is inevitable to feel the need to take responsibility for our lives. It is all the more important for women because the idea of independent women venturing into the world to make a living equates to ultimate freedom. Purple, in conversation with a few such students from the Department of English, presents their stories of success and challenges.

Speaking with Purple, Ms.Ridhuvarshini D, a student of III BA English Literature in PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, said that she works part-time as a tuition teacher at her home. Upon talking further, she said, “I'm passionate about the teaching field and I believe that studying for the cause has enhanced my academic experience. I took up a part-time job to gain practical experience, and build my professional skills for my academic studies.”

Working part-time, balancing work and academics is a tedious task but Ms.Ridhuvarshini balances them both by prioritizing tasks and allocating specific time for studying, working, and personal activities. She said that the biggest challenges are managing time and handling stress. She added that working while studying had helped develop her communication skills and team spirit. It has also prepared her to adapt to new environments and challenges. As a final note, she said, “My ultimate goal is to become a teacher.”

Successful working students are not hard to find in the English department. Ms Shireen A, a 3rd-year literature student, encouraged by her family members to stand on her own, started her online clothing business. She said, “During my study time, I'll concentrate on my studies and on my work time, I'll focus only on it.” She jots down the tasks to be completed for the day and the week which she ranks them in order of importance.

The textile industry is a flourishing field but every venture is laced with its unique challenges. Ms.Shireen said “The difficulty I faced was traveling to other states for garment purchase. I overcame this obstacle by going for the purchase during my holidays.” She also added that being patient is very important, and consistency is the key for success.

She said, “Take a good amount of time to decide what business or work suits you, research a lot about it and then start your business. Don't lose hope until you achieve it one day. Be consistent in your work and manage time properly." Signing off, she said, “I improved my communication skills and also gained a lot of knowledge about the materials and fashion. I hope to learn more in the future.”

Another independent student, Jeni Sylvia J from III BA English Literature, runs her own tuition at present. Speaking with her, she said, “I've always been passionate about teaching and sharing knowledge. As a student, I realized the importance of personalised attention and guidance, especially for those struggling in school. I wanted to make a positive impact.” Her enthusiasm in doing justice to her job is a testament to her success.

Upon asking her about the challenges that she faces everyday, she said, “As a home tutor, I face numerous challenges including time management, student management, marketing, financial management, and burnout. To overcome these obstacles, I employ effective strategies. By creating schedules, prioritizing tasks, I maintain a healthy balance between work and studies.”

She further added, “Working while studying has been a transformative experience, equipping me with invaluable skills and knowledge that will benefit my future career. I've developed essential skills such as time management, prioritisation, communication, problem-solving, leadership, and financial management. I set clear goals and list tasks prior to carrying them out."

Working as a tuition teacher while studying prepares one for the workforce by developing essential skills like time management, communication, and responsibility. It teaches one to balance multiple tasks and handle pressure, both crucial in any career. In the long-term, it may inspire a passion for education or open doors that value leadership, organising, and teaching experience. The same is true for any business venture. It is important to stay independent, and financial independence is the only way to achieve success and gain respect.
