BEGINNER’S BLISS AT BIG SKY: LEARNING TO SKI AND SOAK IN THE SCENERY

Big Sky is home to some of North America’s most famous expert terrain, from the Moonlight Basin Headwaters to Lone Peak’s well-named “Big Couloir.” But it’s also a fantastic place for skiers who are new to the sport to learn, develop skills, and enjoy the mountains. If you’re a beginner, here are five tips to get your skis pointed in the right direction:
1. Learn to turn
Practice making wide, sweeping turns across the trail at first, and then progress to tighter turns as you gain confidence. Turning is a fundamental skill for skiing.
2. Take lessons
It’s incredibly helpful to take lessons from a qualified ski instructor. A good instructor can teach you the proper techniques and help you avoid bad habits that can be difficult to break later on.
3. That said, have fun
At its heart, skiing is about the simple joy of sliding down snow, so don’t get too caught up in perfecting your technique. Enjoy the experience and the beautiful scenery around you. It’s perfectly fine to stick to terrain that feels easygoing and approachable.

4. Get the gear
Your experience will be much more comfortable if you have clothing that keeps you warm and that fits well, and gear that’s appropriate for your experience and skill level. Always dress in layers, as mountain weather sometimes has a mind of its own.
5. Take breaks
Skiing is physically demanding, so take frequent breaks to rest and recharge. There are many slopeside dining options that make this a pleasure!
