RED LODGE’S SONGWRITER FESTIVAL STRIKES A CHORD
Over three days every June, a time of gorgeous spring abundance in Red Lodge, the whole town opens its arms to songwriters, performers, and music-lovers—anyone who appreciates the craft of composition. It’s a busy but enriching time for this small community, as well as the surrounding region. Now in its 7th year, the 2023 Songwriter Festival schedule boasts 37 live performances and 24 songwriters, some local and some visiting from across the country. The event especially attracts western and country artists, but you shouldn’t be surprised to encounter indie, pop, or rock artists who simply share a love for expressing stories and emotions through song. There are a variety of forums with performances by rising stars, late night open mic jams, and a songwriting contest showcase. Behindthe-scenes, as artists meet others they’ve longed to collaborate with, they discover entirely new musical connections, and begin writing songs you’ll hear on the radio someday. In your first year, see if you can stop by all nine venues, each a Red Lodge classic, all the way from the Cattail Bakery to the historic Roman Theater. Writers hate clichés, but the big sky truly does inspire, and artists rave about how Red Lodge, with its downto-earth atmosphere and lush spring landscape is the perfect place to spark creativity.
