PAGE 135: NORTH MEADOW CREEK ROAD, MCALLISTER

As much change as there is in Montana and Northern Idaho, so much stays the same. The way the pink sun washes over the mountains at sunset, or the feeling of shock and delight when you plunge into a cool, clear river pool. You’ll still find small towns with Western hospitality and quaint character, where you’ll run into your neighbor at the grocery store and get to chatting about the recent snow or the game. The cities and larger towns are abuzz with change, but the deep history is visible, and communities feel as tightknit as ever. This region’s economy is a blend of old and new, with modern industries like tech and tourism thriving alongside long traditions of agriculture, logging, mining, and manufacturing.

We know a little about this balancing act, about staying true to your roots while staying ahead of the times. Welcome to the 10th anniversary issue of PureWest, the publication that has highlighted a new chapter in our 53-year history. Ten years ago, three Montana real estate firms with shared values and vision merged, forming PureWest Christie’s International Real Estate, the largest locally owned and independent brokerage in the state. Following that momentous handshake, we have served thousands of buyers and sellers from 19 locations across Montana and North Idaho. The talent, knowledge, commitment, and experience of our more than 250 professionals are truly unmatched.

Over the past decade, we have made a mark with our philosophy that real estate is a relationship, not a transaction. When you work with a PureWest agent, you’re working with someone who will be your neighbor, fellow board member, school volunteer, and companion on the golf course or ski lift. We live in and love our communities, and we use this local edge to help you buy and sell distinguished properties with ease. If life takes you away from Montana or Idaho, we’re here for that, too. PureWest has earned our reputation as a leader in the real estate industry, and our affiliations with Christie’s International Real Estate and Leading Real Estate Companies of the World® mean we can deliver exceptional real estate results around the globe.

In 2015, we launched this magazine to showcase our communities and the beautiful, varied properties that fill them. As always, we hope you enjoy flipping through the following pages and imagining yourself in a mountain condo, a lakefront estate, or a working ranch. No matter your vision, we are here for you when you are ready to bring it to life.

Eye on Design: EXPERT PANEL

Whether your space is all clean lines and white surfaces or it’s dripping with decorative elements, a keen sense of detail goes a long way. Every style, from minimalist to maximalist, depends on a certain finegrained cohesion. To celebrate the sense of comfort and luxury that arises from paying attention to the details, we asked three of our favorite design studios in Montana to weigh in on three questions:

W hat underappreciated detail do you think elevates the experience of luxury in a home?

W hen staging a home, what key details should homeowners pay attention to?

Thinking about your recent projects, what's one detail you really fell in love with?

Tate Interiors, Whitefish

Heidi Tate’s style lands at the intersection of timeless style and balanced livability. While Whitefish has been Heidi’s business basecamp since 2004, she frequently designs homes nationwide, from Hawaii to Florida. She draws inspiration from the natural world, where beauty and order coexist and enhance each other.

Underappreciated detail:

One of the most underappreciated details in luxury homes is door and cabinet hardware. The tactile experience of opening a door or pulling a drawer is something we do countless times a day. High-quality, beautifully crafted hardware adds a level of refinement and intentionality to a space, whether it's hand-cast bronze, unlacquered brass that patinas over time, or sleek minimalist pulls. It’s a subtle detail, but one that truly enhances the experience of luxury.

Staging detail:

The key to staging a home is creating a feeling of warmth and livability while maintaining an elevated aesthetic. Homeowners should focus on three main elements: First, lighting. Layered lighting makes all the difference. Soft, warm lighting from table lamps creates an inviting ambiance. Second, texture and layering. Thoughtfully placed textiles, such as plush throws, linen drapery, and natural fiber rugs, add depth and sophistication. Third, scale and flow. Ensuring furniture is appropriately sized for the space and arranged to facilitate easy movement makes a home feel welcoming.

Recent detail we love:

One recent detail that truly stood out was a bespoke, built-in banquette we designed for a home’s dining nook. We upholstered it in a rich, textural fabric that added warmth and contrast to the surrounding natural

wood finishes. The custom curved shape not only maximized seating but also created an intimate, inviting space for gathering. Paired with a statement light fixture and handcrafted dining table, the banquette became a focal point that blended comfort with sophistication— perfectly embodying the relaxed yet refined aesthetic we envisioned for the home.

Urbaine Atelier & Boutique, Bozeman

Just over a decade ago, Skye Anderson and Rain

Houser opened the doors to Urbaine Home, their showroom and lifestyle boutique in Bozeman’s Cannery District. Their distinctive style, an elevated blend of Bohemian and rustic, was a hit. Within a year, they added a design studio to the mix, and now they focus on custom projects, always collaborating as lead designers.

Underappreciated detail:

Lighting. Lighting is key to curating luxury. The slightest alteration in light changes everything about how the

textures, tones, dimensions, and patterns will come across in a space. The right light holds the key to pulling you in or pushing you out. Adding a modern light to a rustic space or a glamorous shine to a traditional home is an essential juxtaposition that is often overlooked.

Staging detail:

You want to evoke a sense of the space being lived in. Vintage pieces that have lived a life and have memories of their own are the perfect way to create the “real home” feeling in a space amidst new finishes and furnishings. A staged home’s very purpose is to invite thoughts and images of the life and memories to be made there if the potential buyer were to make the purchase.

Recent detail we love:

We are currently finding a lot of joy honing in on even the smallest of details that accumulate to build a design truly unique and elevated. Whether it’s finding the perfect stone slab to turn a corner or adding seamless cabinetry hardware, we have been uncovering that even the smallest touches continue to make the largest difference. As for the larger details—we have also been falling deeper and deeper in love with the architectural elements of our projects.

Black Cedar Interior Design, Missoula

Co-owners Kelly Neilson and Brandy Marshall are driven to create beautiful and functional spaces. In addition to expertise with design, Kelly brings business and marketing experience to the table, and Brandy also has a background in sales and events. This wide skillset makes their studio nimble and effective.

Underappreciated detail:

There isn't one detail in particular that makes a home luxurious. There are thousands of details that need attention in interior design, and when a homeowner or designer focuses on all the little details, it creates a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing

design. For example, ensure that all the wood finishes in your flooring, cabinetry, and furniture have the same tone. Also, check that metals used in lighting, cabinet hardware, or plumbing complement each other. Be sure to use each metal twice or more in an area so the finish doesn’t look out of place. These are just a few examples!

Staging detail:

Less is more. Paint and furniture should be neutral. Homeowners should keep only some items on display as décor. We love adding plants and greenery throughout the rooms because they soften up a house and make it feel more

comfortable. Exchange some décor items for plants with a great vase or pot to improve the overall aesthetic of your home.

Recent detail we love:

Full tile walls! In a few recent projects, we have designed bathrooms and kitchen window walls with tile starting at the countertop and ending at the ceiling, instead of doing a standard size tile/ stone backsplash. Use colorful or patterned tile to make a bold statement and give the space a focal point—or keep it more simple and subtle by using neutral colors and non-patterned tile. Either option gives the space a unique, beautiful, and luxurious feel.

Pulling together to support each other turns a town into something more. You don’t have to tell our communities that, it’s just how we do things. At PureWest, we build relationships for life, and for our agents, that means putting time and resources into local non-profit organizations.

Though the list of community groups our agents support goes on and on, there’s one recent success story we wanted to share with you. For over 40 years, the Gallatin Valley Food Bank (GVFB) has been the critical link between food and the people who need it. The no-cost grocery market is stocked with fresh vegetables, canned and dry goods, frozen foods, meat, and other cooking essentials. In December 2023, after two decades in their Bond Street location, GVFB moved into a new home at the Community Commons, on the north end of Bozeman. Slightly over a year later, they are thrilled with the transition.

“Customers and volunteers have shared that GVFB’s new home is more comfortable, more respectful, and easier to navigate. Staff feedback notes the increased efficiency and safety of the systems we have developed and improved upon here,” Human Resource Development Council (HRDC) Food & Nutrition Director Jill Holder says.

The Community Commons offers easy, effective collaboration for Bozeman nonprofits. Alongside the market, the building includes a warehouse for emergency food storage, a commercial kitchen, a pay-whatyou-can restaurant, and educational space. Services extend beyond food security, offering community members an entry point into a vast web of Bozeman-area resources such as homeowner assistance and Medicare counseling.

“While I am thrilled with our capacity and efficiency, I get the most emotional about our new sense of community,” Holder says. “By being housed together, we now define every sense of community: location, interests, goals, and teamwork.”

Glacier National Park See Glacier from a New Angle

Most people visit Glacier National Park for just a few days, but there is truly enough beauty here to keep your jaw dropped for a lifetime. You can’t just “do” Glacier in a single vacation! Not to knock the Going-to-the-Sun Road—because it is everything it’s promised to be—but there’s so much to do here to keep deepening your experience of the landscape. This park provides pure alpine wonderment, from the field of purple lupine nodding in the wind to the mountain goat dancing across a knife-edge ridgeline. Here are a few ideas to keep the good times going and see Glacier from a new angle.

Next Stop Kyiyo Merc

The Cut Bank Valley is an overlooked area of the park, with many visitors skipping right over it while traveling between St. Mary to Two Medicine. But there are excellent day recreation opportunities there, including the challenging but well-worth-it hike to Triple Divide Pass, where water flows to the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic

oceans. On your way home, stop by the Kyiyo Mercantile for a huckleberry bear claw or homemade fried chicken. The Kyiyo Merc is the latest business venture of Will Hammerquist, who has owned the 50-year-old Polebridge Mercantile for the past decade. The new Merc takes inspiration from the old one, with the iconic old Western facade, as well as from the location’s history and from the land it sits on, named after the Blackfoot word for bear (pronounced Ke-I-Yo). Located at the Kiowa Junction where highways 49 and 89 meet, we recommend visiting via the scenic Looking Glass Highway.

Off-Grid Oasis

Take the long dirt road heading north, slow down your pace, and you’ll find one of the most genuine, homegrown, and unpretentious music scenes in the West in Polebridge. At the Northern Lights Saloon, solar panels stand in the gorgeous river meadow, with classic views of the North Fork mountains in the background. Built in 1916 by Wild Bill and Emma Adair, the saloon

has had a long life providing a place for residents of this small, tight-knit community to get together. Nestled in the lodgepole forests below Winona Ridge, Home Ranch Bottoms Bar & Restaurant also has a long history, spending most of its lifetime as a general store for the region. Current owners, husband-and-wife team Flannery and Dan Freund, have dedicated their five years at the helm to crafting a world-class sound system and expanding their calendar.

Lookout Checklist

Most of the trails in the park will take you up valleys and over passes; you’re more likely to be led to a lake than a summit. So, if you want to see the park from up high, we suggest visiting a fire lookout. Sitting on the Continental Divide, the Swiftcurrent Lookout can be accessed from Many Glacier on the east or the McDonald Valley on the west. Whichever side hikers come from, they will be treated to views of both these major glacial

30-60 POUNDS OF HUCKLEBERRIES EATEN DAILY BY AN AVERAGE GRIZZLY BEAR

valleys, McDonald cradling the park’s largest lake and Many Glacier with its chain of smaller, colorful lakes. In the North Fork, the trail to Numa Lookout switchbacks across a south-facing aspect of the ridge, providing mouthwatering views of the lake far below. And near the southern tip of the park, in the Middle Fork, hikers follow the trail lined with thimbleberries to Scalplock Lookout. This trail is likely to be quieter than the previous two, and the summit is no less enjoyable.

Support Glacier Institute

The Glacier Institute provides a wide range of guided hikes and programs that help participants fall in love with the natural world and gain a little extra meaning they can carry on in life. Donors have helped make their youth hiking program possible and their summer programs accessible to those needing financial assistance. Visit glacierinstitute.org to learn more and make a donation.

Northwest MONTANA

Our largest region, Northwest Montana, reaches from the rugged alpine peaks of the Continental Divide down to the deep cedar forests of Lincoln County.

With more than 110,000 residents, the Flathead Valley and its three main towns—Whitefish, Columbia Falls, and Kalispell—anchor this region. Many services extend across the valley, such as the award-winning ImagineIF Libraries and the Logan Health system, named a 2025 Top 100 Rural & Community Hospital.

In the north valley, Whitefish is the region’s quintessential year-round resort town—bustling, charming, and just a stone’s throw from the ski area and lake. Columbia Falls

is a residential town coming into its own as the Gateway to Glacier National Park, sitting just downstream of the confluence of the three forks of the Flathead River.

Kalispell, the county seat, is centrally located in the heart of the valley. Gorgeous views of the Swan Range dominate the horizon, with Glacier Park summits occasionally peeking through the river canyon. A hub for residents and businesses, Kalispell is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. On a weekend, catch a show at the new Wachholz Center’s state-of-the-art performance hall or a game of the Glacier Range Riders baseball team.

The region is home to many smaller rural communities, like West Glacier and Polebridge, two entrance points to

the national park. West Glacier is central, with gas and cell service, while Polebridge is remote and off-the-grid—but both offer access to protected Wild and Scenic waters, sit beneath internationally designated dark skies, and attract close-knit local residents.

With 22,000 residents, Lincoln County holds down the far northwest corner of the state. Heading northbound on U.S. Highway 93 toward the Canadian border, you’ll pass by Olney, Trego, and Fortine, all offering even greater serenity and seclusion in the deep woods. Get into the flow at the Round Meadow, one of Montana’s best cross-country skiing areas, or go full throttle on your snowmachine in the Northern Whitefish Range, where endless miles of road provide endless fun.

The town of Eureka is both the port to Canada and the cornerstone of Montana’s Tobacco Valley, with restaurants, shops, and services. Wilderness Club Golf Course in Eureka recently made an appearance on America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses. Lake Koocanusa is perfect for summer days out on the boat; catch live music from the water at Abayance Bay Marina.

The communities in this diverse region are some of the state’s fastest growing, generating new energy while retaining their true Montana character.

Room to Roam

With the first phase of a $150 million expansion completed spring 2025, the Glacier Park International Airport (GPIA) is turning this region into a great base camp for those who want to put down roots in Montana while still being connected to other places.

The Flathead Valley ranks in the top three destinations in Montana and GPIA passenger numbers have doubled in the past decade, with 475,000 enplanements in 2024. While travel continues to grow every year during summer, the upward trend isn’t limited to the peak tourism season—this may be attributed to new Flathead Valley residents making the most of GPIA’s connectivity.

Evolving far beyond its humble origins as a farmland runway in the 1940s, the expansion will triple the passenger terminal; add new retail and dining options, parking space, and jet bridges; update the baggage claim system and TSA checkpoint; and upgrade the design focused on natural materials and light. The expansion continues as airlines add flights to the airport, now with direct flights to national hubs from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

With plans to wrap up the expansion by June 2026, GPIA will be able to meet growing demand and ensure Montanans can easily travel for pleasure and business, even as more and more people discover all the Flathead has to offer.

Taking the Reins at Rebecca Farm

With the soft blue ridges of the mountains set against the bright yellow of summer’s canola fields, The Event at Rebecca Farm is one of the most scenic destination venues in the sport of equestrian eventing. Over five days in July, hundreds of competitors and thousands of spectators flock to the location on Farm to Market Road in Kalispell. Riders compete in the classic triathlon of disciplines: dressage, the ballet of eventing; cross-country, featuring a course with obstacles; and show jumping, which tests the horse’s athleticism and stamina on the last day.

Kalispell riders have participated in the sport of equestrian since the 1980s, when the local riding club built a cross-country course at Herron Park and hosted the valley’s first competition. In 2002, two organizers Jerome and the late Rebecca “Becky” Broussard, purchased Rebecca Farm. They could host more divisions and more competitors, showing even more people the beauty and power of what a rider and a horse can do. In 2012, Olympian Ian Stark redesigned the cross-country course. Over the past decade, some elements have become iconic, like the frontier town with classic Western architecture or the Louisiana bayou with giant crawfish, beavers, snakes, and alligators for the rider to clear.

“In eventing, you’re putting the relationship between the horse and the rider to the test,” says professional event rider and coach Marc Grandia.

“At Rebecca Farm, you’re not getting over the beautiful water jump at the base of Spectator Hill—a six-foot drop—without trust.”

The Event is free to the public, so set up your blanket or camp chair on Spectator Hill and see a 1,000-pound animal gracefully soar through the air over a giant cob of corn!

Whitefish MONTANA

One of National Geographic’s Top 25 Ski Towns, Whitefish is growing as more people realize the benefits of living in a place like this. But most newcomers understand the community’s values— that time spent outside is as important as that spent in the office. Through investments in public access and an economy built on recreation and tourism, Whitefish is oriented around outdoor fun. You could fill every evening and weekend with activities just a few minutes from home, like floating on the lazy Whitefish River, mountain biking at Spencer Trails, or catching the sunset at the dog park.

Originally, Whitefish emerged as a small logging outpost along the Great Northern Railway. Plucky pioneering residents hauled their skis up to the Big Mountain above town, and after World War II, the entire community pitched in to establish a ski area for everybody. Nearly 80 years later, Whitefish Mountain Resort has earned a name for family-friendly skiing, excellent tree skiing, and its beautiful snow ghost-edged scenic views of Glacier National Park. And now in the megapass era of the ski industry, Whitefish is gaining recognition as an independent mountain with strong local character and flavor.

Quick FACTS

8 million MOST VERTICAL FEET SKIED BY A PASSHOLDER IN A SEASON

47

Down in town, there is a varied restaurant scene and shopping district, yet, at three stories high with a rooftop hot tub, the Firebrand Hotel is the tallest building in town. This reflects the community’s efforts to preserve a quaint Western feel and lifestyle even as the town booms with development. Stop by Fleur Bakery for a perfect French canelé, Spotted Bear Distillery for a smooth whiskey, and Herb & Omni for elevated, fresh farm-to-table dining.

Whitefish residents are social and love to get together, whether it’s for the Whitefish Winter Carnival, an occasion for merriment in the deep winter, or the Under the Big Sky Music Festival, known for its perfect blend of national names and regional favorites.

This town is a prime example of what’s possible for Montana towns by tapping into the global recreation industry.

Skim, Skimo, Slalom & More: Your Guide to Mountain Events

Skier and snowboarder culture is grounded in the progression of winter, from fall when locals bring out older gear to enjoy thin white ribbons of snow on Thanksgiving, all the way through spring when costumes come out to express the exuberance and playfulness of the season’s last laps. A full calendar of annual events at Whitefish Mountain Resort (WMR) brings people together throughout the winter, every winter, with these classics headlining the calendar:

New Year’s Eve

Only a week-and-a-half after the darkest day of the year, the night skies above WMR alight with New Year’s celebrations. The on-slope Torchlight Parade opens the show for the main firework act. Gather outside Ed & Mully’s for the best viewing.

Whiteout

Skimo Race

On any given day at WMR, you’re likely to spot skiers ascending the Benny Up! Trail on Toni Matt. Folks here like a little uphill with their downhill. For nearly two decades, the most athletic among them have slipped into spandex, squeezed energy gel packets between their teeth, slapped on their skins, and hustled up and down thousands of vertical feet during this event.

Nate Chute Banked Slalom

The second longest running snowboard banked slalom in the United States. Proceeds help to raise money for a great cause, the Nate Chute Foundation, which promotes mental wellness and helps reduce suicide in the valley. The course begins near the bottom of Goat Haunt and continues down into a long natural halfpipe feature on the backside, George’s Gorge, underneath Chair 7.

Pond Skim

A classic spring event at ski areas across the country, the pond skim puts silliness, creativity, and good spirits at the front and center as competitors skiff across a small pond near the base of Chair 1. Hard to say whether spectators or competitors have more fun!

Sushi with Staying Power

For 25 years, Wasabi Sushi Bar & Ginger Grill has been a standard choice for any celebration, first date, or reunion in Whitefish. Beyond nigiri and sashimi, locals enjoy their creative fusion rolls, which integrate fresh local ingredients, and an extensive sake menu. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, a perfect place to spend an evening with friends or family.

Owner Paula Greenstein, who grew up in Los Angeles, moved to Whitefish 18 years ago and bought the building on 419 E. Second Street with her sister. She took over the helm of the restaurant downstairs, continuing on a strong reputation built by the original owners Scott and Kerry Nagel.

Two mirrors on the ceiling above the sushi workstation provide diners a view of their food being prepared. Head chef Jacob Hausauer, who has worked at Wasabi for 10 years, grew up in the Flathead Valley and is a graduate

of the Culinary Institute of Montana at Flathead Valley Community College. For his signature roll, he pairs sockeye salmon with cucumber, jalapeño, avocado, sesame oil, and citrusy yuzu tobiko.

When Scott and Kerry opened Wasabi in 2000, the dining landscape in the Flathead Valley was far less diverse than it is today. Wasabi was a lone wolf at the time, but now sushi lovers have their pick. Right down Second Street, you’ll find Indah Sushi, which opened in this brick-and-mortar location in 2017 after two successful years in their food truck. At Blue Samurai Sushi Bar & Grill in Kalispell, owner and chef Tuyen “Tony” Tran is bestin-class for traditional sushi. With a focus on the fish, you won’t find much cream cheese or mayonnaise on Tran’s menu. In Bigfork, SakeTome Sushi is the place to go for an electric atmosphere and a creative, locally sourced menu.

Flathead LAKE

Welcome to the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, a shimmering gem picturesquely situated below the peaks of the steep slope of the Swan Range and Mission Mountains. With glacial source waters in the Crown of the Continent, millions of acres of wilderness feed Flathead Lake. Crisp and clean, its shores are uncommonly serene. Roughly 15,000 year-round residents in the many bays and ports around the lake have established a distinctly Montana lakeside lifestyle. Over 185 miles of shoreline provide ample space for a number

of small towns to flourish around the lake. On the northeast shoulder, you’ll find Bigfork, a community where a highly successful summer tourism sector supports a vibrant fine dining and arts culture. Orchards spread from Bigfork to Polson, and the whole way down the winding east-side road, you’ll see cherry stands. Pass by Woods Bay, known for its dockside bars, and Yellow Bay, home to the Flathead Lake Biological Center. At the foot of the lake is Polson, the commercial hub of the lake’s agricultural industry and the seat of Lake County. Both Bigfork and Polson are home to roughly 5,000 year-round residents but expand during summer months.

Head back up the west side of Flathead Lake, passing the small communities of Big Arm, Elmo, Dayton, and Rollins, all overlooking the lake’s largest bay. West side residents enjoy fantastic evening alpenglow on the Swan Mountains. Just a half hour to the east, Hot Springs, a town named for its abundant natural resource, offers numerous developed soaking spots.

On the lake’s northwest shoulder, neighboring towns Lakeside and Somers shine in the summer with their lake access, as well as in the winter with Blacktail Mountain Ski Area right in the backyard. This family-friendly ski area is known for wellpreserved powder on its northerly slopes and gorgeous views of the lake—the thing that brings everyone together in this region.

Wind in Their Sails

Flathead Lake’s waters and winds offer some of the finest boating and sailing in the West. Few know better than Galen Healey, Commodore of North Flathead Yacht Club, which was established in Somers in 1975 and has 170 member families today. The North Flathead Yacht Club holds the 2024 Montana Cup, which means they’ll host Montana's largest annual sailboat race, the Montana Cup Regatta, once again in 2025.

Galen’s parents, originally windsurfers, got involved in the club in the ‘80s because it made boats and racing accessible to families. They loved it, and even became sailmakers. Galen was raised in the club, competing in the junior racing program, where his competitive spirit took to the sport, especially racing sailing dinghies.

“I fell in love with it,” he says. “The quest to become a better sailor and have other experienced sailors around. We sailed the same wind, why was one of us so much faster? The heart of the club is to make sailboat racing affordable to get into, it’s a high barrier sport— buying a boat, maintaining a boat, finding a crew—but the club facilitates through community.”

Galen has sailed elsewhere but always finds himself coming back home. There are many local wind patterns across the lake, varying from Polson to Dayton to Bigfork, but he loves the north valley.

“We have good and fairly consistent thermals,” he says. “In the morning, the cool air comes down the river from Glacier, the draft runs down the valley to the lake. Midday, it will clock around and blow from the south. It’s not too gusty, and it doesn’t shift too much.”

Often, Galen noted, when people move here, their “thing” is usually not sailing, and probably not sailboat racing. They’re more commonly drawn to skiing and hiking. But sailors engage with the natural world in a way that these recreationists would likely recognize and take to quickly. If you’ve spent most of your time up high in the mountains, maybe it’s time to try out the view from down on the lake.

Lakeside’s Cornerstone Businesses

Founded in 1892 as a steamboat port, this town was originally named after John J. Stoner, who owned a hotel along the main creek that runs into Flathead Lake. Over the town’s 130-year history, businesses like Stoner’s hotel have played a key role in bringing folks together, driving the economy, and creating a stable foundation for community. Back in Stoner’s time, a single mercantile provided for all needs—today, residents cross items off their list at Blacktail Family Foods, Remedies Lakeside Pharmacy, Sliters Lumber & Building Supply, and more.

Blacktail Mountain Ski Area opened in 1998 as a project between four friends who wanted to provide a down-home, family-friendly experience. Situated in the Island Unit of the Flathead National Forest, the ski runs are embedded among quiet, largely undeveloped stands of pine and larch. All the ski terrain faces north, which shelters cold powder snow from the sun and keeps turns fresh long after a storm.

Tamarack Brewing Company has been a fixture

of the Lakeside community since opening in 2007. Whether celebrating a great day on snow or the lake, this brewpub is the place to meet. Voted Best of the Flathead in five categories in 2024 (local brewery, local beer, happy hour, beer selection, and casual dining), it’s safe to say that Tamarack is an all-around hit.

Breakfast with espresso at Glacier Perks Coffee House is the best way to start the day in Lakeside. Their signature egg sandwich is served with bacon and smoked ham, three types of cheese, jalapeños, and a generous spread of sriracha aioli. Save room for fresh baked goods—or just take a few to go. Either way, you’ll be back for more soon enough.

With over 125 members, the Lakeside Somers Chamber of Commerce is a thriving network for business owners and community members who want to see Lakeside’s upwards trajectory continue. From the Lakeside Fair in July to Winterfest in February, chamber events are a great way to tap into the heart of Lakeside.

Bigfork MONTANA

With the Swan Range rising above the eastern horizon, as well as the western horizon stretching out across Flathead Lake, Bigfork’s natural beauty is not subtle. It is inspirational; Bigfork’s artistic character may have arisen to properly appreciate local scenery.

The small community’s core sits on the landing between the mouth of the two rivers that feed the lake, the Flathead and the Swan. The name of Bigfork’s main street, Electric Avenue, comes from its founding power plant, but it’s also an apt description of life here. Bigfork does not back down from the challenge of supporting art galleries, music venues, and of course, the theater, which is anchored by the renowned Bigfork Summer Playhouse. As an unincorporated community, not a town, Bigfork relies on volunteer hands to step up and pitch in, which has created a culture of caring and commitment.

Summer is the most exciting time of year in Bigfork, but the other three seasons bring plenty of joy and solitude to residents. Fall means hunting in the Swan Mountains and the Bob Marshall Wilderness—an opportunity to track trophy mule deer, bull elk, and mountain goat. Whether you have a bow, rifle, or just your camera, you’ll appreciate the setting highlighted by yellow larches, the famous coniferous trees with needles that turn and drop in the fall.

Winter on the lakeside is a quiet season, a time to rest and recharge. There’s no shortage of merriment around Christmas though, with downtown decorated by the Bigfork Elves. Many folks backcountry ski in the Jewel Basin, snowmobile on the Crane Mountain Trails, and ice

fish on Echo Lake. When the snow melts in spring, the rivers run high, attracting boaters from around the world for the Bigfork Whitewater Festival, which is celebrating its 50th year in 2025. Those seeking something less thrilling than the “Wild Mile” will enjoy the Clearwater Canoe Trail near Seeley Lake, a winding path through equally dense willow marsh and bird habitat.

Seasonal cycles are an important part of life here, away from the breakneck pace of those places that never sleep, never slow down for a moment. Though quaint, this community is mighty when it comes to outdoor recreation, entertainment, and quality of life.

Not Our First Rodeo Quick FACTS

Rodeo is a classic way to spend a warm Montana evening. Cheering for every bronc rider and barrel racer to do their best, the crowd comes together as one. Packed stadium seats at the Bigfork Rodeo are a testament to the region’s longstanding, community-oriented cowboy culture. All are welcome, whether you were born in a pair of cowboy boots, or you can’t tell the header from the heeler (for the uninitiated: the header lassos the steer’s head and the heeler ropes the legs).

The Bigfork Rodeo is hosted by New West Rodeo Productions, a family business based in Browning and an award-winning PRCA stock contractor. Since its beginning in 2018, this rodeo has become a favorite in the region, following in the footsteps of the only other Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) sanctioned event in the Flathead Valley, the Northwest Montana Fair in Kalispell. Over the last seven years, they have built a following, and in 2024, they were recognized as Montana Rodeo of the Year in the medium-size category.

Community support, from volunteers to event

Held from July 5-8 in 2025, there is free entry for veterans and first responders on Sunday, free entry for kids on Monday, and a concert to end the event with a bang on Tuesday.

UNPARALLELED ADVENTURE.

Luxury Lives in the Mountains.

North IDAHO

North Idaho is a shining example of what the inland Pacific Northwest has to offer, with lush temperate forests and wild rivers. This region may not have been on your radar, but you might find the perfect mountain resort town, quaint historic community, or deeply secluded property here. There’s good company when you want it, and peace and quiet when you don’t. The North Idaho region encompasses three panhandle counties: Bonner, Boundary, and Kootenai, together with a population of 250,000.

Our PureWest Idaho offices are in Sandpoint, a classic mountain town whose motto is “get social with nature.” We invite you to visit us at our North 3rd Avenue location or at our newly opened site on North 1st Avenue. Sandpoint prides itself as much on pace as place, with a quality of life to match the quality of the views. The town is surrounded by the Selkirk, Cabinet, and Coeur d’Alene mountains, and it sits at the shores of Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho’s largest lake. As the seat of Bonner County, Sandpoint is the hub for retailers, art galleries, and good eats, with more than 40 restaurants. For fresh sandwiches on good bread, delicate crêpes, and quality espresso, stop by The Bernklau, a cafe and bistro. Next door, The Forge Artisan Pizza makes magic with marinara and a wood fire oven Check out 113 Main, a unique dining experience featuring scratch-made pasta, smoked cocktails, and seasonal dishes in a historic setting where culinary creativity meets local charm.

There is plenty of water and land for year-round recreation, similar to Montana towns like Whitefish and Big Sky. The Idaho Panhandle National Forest encompasses 2.5 million acres in this region, which is one of the most heavily forested in the U.S.—The White House’s Christmas tree often comes from here. Many Sandpoint residents shift back and forth between boating and fishing in the summer and skiing at Schweitzer Mountain in the winter.

Take Highway 95 across the lake towards Coeur d’Alene, and you’ll encounter a string of smaller communities, beginning with Sagle. On the northeast shore of the lake, following Route 200 into the Cabinet Mountains, there are quiet, lovely properties overlooking the lake in Hope and Clark Fork. We have seen the luxury market grow so much in Sandpoint and beyond, and there’s no surprise why.

With the yin and yang of summer and winter in Sandpoint, life here is never boring. Residents get into the flow of the seasons, adapting as the days get longer and shorter, the mercury rises and falls, and the colors of the landscape cycle through green, then yellow, then white, then green again.

Summer, season of the lake

This is the season of reeling in record kokanee salmon, of reapplying sunscreen and paddling to new, unfamiliar coves on Lake Pend Oreille, the state’s largest lake at 43 miles long. Here, there’s enough room for sailing, motorized boats, and human-powered vessels like kayaks and stand-up paddleboards to easily coexist and enjoy the best of Northern Idaho lake life.

Surrounded by national forest, much of the 111-footlong shoreline is undeveloped, aside from places to access the water. Around the lake, there are plenty of parks, boat launches, and firepits. We recommend the 4,000-acre Farragut State Park, at the far southern tip of the lake, which has large rentable picnic pavilions, a disc golf course, and over 200 camping spots.

Pro Tip: If you like live music by the lake (who doesn’t!), get your tickets for the Festival at Sandpoint, held over two weekends in July and August for over 40 years.

Winter, season of the mountain Named after an old Swiss hermit who lived at the bottom of the basin, Schweitzer Mountain was featured in Travel + Leisure magazine’s roundup of America’s Last Hidden Mountain Gems. We agree with the description. There’s a long history of skiing here, but the modern resort we know today was founded as a community non-profit in the 1960s by a Spokane resident who wanted to ride lifts closer than Big Mountain in Whitefish. Today, the experience between the two is similar, with good tree skiing, short lift lines, and beautiful views of the town and lake below. The chairlifts provide access to two massive bowls, the southfacing Schweitzer Bowl on the frontside and northfacing Outback Bowl on the backside. It’s easier than ever to visit, now that it’s part of the Ikon Ski Pass.

Pro tip: Families and beginners can ski for free on the magic carpet, a moving sidewalk like the kind you see at airports. It provides access to green terrain with low-angle slopes.

Missoula & THE BITTERROOT

Missoula is a passion-driven, forward-thinking college town served with a side of the outdoors. Enrollment is up at the University of Montana, with 10,000 students contributing fresh energy to the overall 77,000 population. Hear the cheers coming from the football stadium and you’ll see why there’s enough school spirit to turn anyone into a Griz fan. The school is known for its programs in natural resources and conservation, and it’s easy to see where students get their inspiration from. From surfing Brennan’s Wave in summer to skiing Snowbowl and Lost Trail all winter and fishing the big rivers and little creeks every opportunity in between, there’s year-round recreation in the region. And nature isn’t always rugged here. A number of natural hot springs are within close range, for those seeking relaxation and restoration.

For a weekend spent in town rather than the mountains, locals shop artisan, locally made, and vintage goods; Missoula is one of few Montana towns with a dominant

retail industry. Families can spot rare species at the Missoula Butterfly House or check out books from the award-winning library. Order an array of pintxos—small, Basque-Country-style snacks—at the cocktail spot Bar Plata. Or, after a show at the Wilma, swing by the Top Hat, a Missoula favorite thanks to its cozy atmosphere and diverse menu.

Heading south from Missoula, the Bitterroot Valley is home to eight charming small towns along the scenic stretch of Route 93, from Stevensville in the north to Sula at the southern end, with a combined population of 47,000. This scenic valley sits between the Bitterroot Mountains to the west, and the Sapphire Mountains to the east. These mountains are known for steep-walled granite canyons, rugged peaks, and blue-ribbon rivers. Stevensville is also home to a wildlife refuge sheltering 260 bird species.

Living rural doesn’t necessarily mean being disconnected, as the Bitterroot Valley shows. Hamilton’s

Quick FACTS

charming Historic District feels like a living time capsule, and yet the Marcus Daly Hospital is renowned for its state-of-the-art robotics. The well-preserved Western character hides the fact that Hamilton is one of Montana’s fastest-growing towns. Once focused only on ranching and agriculture, the Bitterroot’s economy is diversifying and well-connected to Missoula.

Just like the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, and Rattlesnake waterways flow into the Clark Fork River, the past, present, and future of Montana flow together in this region, creating a culture unlike anywhere else in the state.

Raise a Glass to Montana’s Ultimate Beer & Spirits Trail

Craft distilling and brewing is a major Montana industry, with a presence in all towns from large to small—but Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley have the highest density in the state. There is a long tradition of beer and spirits here, thanks to the combination of good water, local grains, and thirsty homesteaders. Here are some recommendations:

Bayern Brewing

This bräuhaus offers traditional German beer styles, made with German brewing techniques, German brewing equipment, and oversight from two Germanborn Brewmasters... sensing a theme? These brewers take their bier seriously! The Amber was Bayern’s first popular beer, launching to local fame and beyond in 1987. This Märzen lager has the rich malt flavor typical of German beers, with a smooth balance of hops on the end.

Draught Works

If someone pulls out a six-pack on the river or at a ski hut, it’s likely to be Draught Works, a Montana mainstay. With 15-20 different handcrafted beers on tap any given day at their Missoula taphouse, choose something classic like the My Ruca American Pale Ale... or you can try an experimental style like the Hawaiian Bonfire Pineapple Jalapeño Ale.

Montgomery Distillery

They are best known for their Whyte Laydie Gin, with a recipe developed through collaboration with Montana herbalists and wildcrafters, who recommended bee balm, which lends warmth; yarrow, with its subtle hoppy note; and elderflower, with its classic wine-like sweetness.

KettleHouse Brewery and Amphitheater

Already well-known for its beers—including the famous Coldsmoke Scotch Ale—KettleHouse fully put itself on the map by opening the amphitheater in 2017. Located just outside Missoula near the main brewing facility, the 4,000-person venue sits on the bank of the Blackfoot River. On tap for summer 2025: Sierra Ferrell, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Alabama Shakes, and more.

Blacksmith Brewing

Heading down the Bitterroot Valley, stop in Stevensville for a pint at this welcoming watering hole, where you’ll find cowboys, farmers, professors, musicians, and fishing guides alike rubbing elbows at the bar. Anchor brews include the crisp Brickhouse Blond and refreshing Mayfly Mexican Lager.

Bitter Root Brewing

As the biggest brewery in the valley, these hop artists produce 35 to 40 different styles of beer throughout the year, with a focus on traditional styles. The restaurant has a family-friendly food menu with pub favorites as well as fresh, seasonal dishes.

Westslope Distillery

Right across the street in Hamilton, Westslope serves a long list of spirits in their well-appointed tap room. The award-winning Lost Trail Rye Vodka, inspired by their distiller's Polish ancestry, brings out the tropical, floral, and peppery notes of 100% Montana rye.

Florence Coffee

If you need a caffeine boost along the way, stop by one of the small, ubiquitous roadside coffee shacks to pick up a cup of joe from this Bitterroot icon. Flo Co has been operated by brothers Nate and Jeff Tamblyn with their families for more than 22 years.

BEARMOUTH RANCH DRUMMOND

Just 35 minutes from Missoula and 10 minutes from Drummond, this 4,880-acre private ranch is a trophy hunter’s paradise, abundant with elk, moose, deer, bear, mountain lion, and more. At its center is a custom lodge designed for limitless entertaining. Enjoy six secluded cabins, two caretaker apartments, 5,000 square feet of outdoor living space, and three RV hookups. Recreation abounds with

an indoor archery range, private handgun course, and an 18-hole disc golf course. With year-round water from Little Bear Creek and nearby access to the Clark Fork River, this luxury ranch offers unmatched Montana living.

Yellowstone National Park

See Yellowstone from a New Angle

This park is and has always been iconic. Even first-time visitors have likely seen many photos and videos of Old Faithful Geyser and the Grand Prismatic Spring. To finally experience them in person is uncanny—familiar and yet completely new at the same time. Almost everyone will see bison, elk,

and other wildlife in this ecological sanctuary. And while seeing a wolf stalking through the snow is anticipated but not promised, if it happens, it feels like a gift. Common experiences make Yellowstone special, but it’s also worth your while to branch out and add new perspectives.

Through the Eyes of a Master

The summer before President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act, creating the world’s first national park, a group called the Hayden Expedition surveyed as much of the landscape as possible. Alongside the geologists and botanists were painters, including Thomas Moran, a British Hudson River School painter who filled a diary with sketches, watercolors, and descriptions of the landscape. Congress purchased his The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, the large oil painting that famously moved them to help enshrine the landscape as a public park. It graced the halls of the U.S. Capitol for more than 75 years and now can be viewed at the Smithsonian Museum. At the Yellowstone

Heritage and Resource Center in Gardiner, visitors can see a small selection of Moran’s watercolor sketches from the 1871 expedition. The originals are too sensitive to light to be displayed, so high-quality reproductions are on this display. With over six million items, Yellowstone has one of the largest collections of archival records, archeological artifacts, and scientific specimens in the National Park Service.

Curtain Call at the Playmill Theater

For 60 years, the Playmill Theater has operated out of its iconic, windmill-adorned West Yellowstone building. The summer of 2025 will be the theater’s last at 29 Madison before relocating to a new location just down

THE GRAND CANYON OF THE YELLOWSTONE, THOMAS MORAN - 1872

the road in Island Park, Idaho. Originally a bingo parlor and pharmacy, the beloved turn-of-the-century building has been worked to its limits. The theater owners are thrilled about the new location, which has double the seats, improved acoustics and lighting, and space for more elaborate staging. The new space will still feel intimate, with a thrust stage layout that has seating on three sides. And just like the current theater, the front row will be at stage level. The venue will also have a restaurant and ice cream parlor. Catch their final season at the original location with Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Steve Martin’s Bright Star, and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, with an Academy-Award winning score.

Yellowstone’s Volcanic Past

Best known for its majestic sage-carpeted valleys, the Yellowstone landscape contains multitudes. On the Absaroka Crest, in the northeast portion of the park, a region called Hoodoo Basin displays large pinnacles and towers of volcanic rock that have stood tall as the land around it erodes. Drippy and surreal, the geology looks like Utah—but you might just see bison grazing. Remote and infrequently visited, Hoodoo Basin is a multi-day trip beyond the Lamar Valley. If you’d like to see volcanic rock without a trek into the backcountry, you can view flows of lava at Obsidian Cliff and Firehole Canyon, both

stops on the classic route between Gardiner and West Yellowstone. For an overall view of the caldera, visit Lake Butte on the eastern edge of the park or Washburn Hot Springs Overlook.

Support Yellowstone Forever

As the park’s official nonprofit partner, Yellowstone Forever helps fund priority projects that contribute to a healthy and resilient environment for the future. Supporting over 30 projects, Yellowstone Forever’s impact reaches wildlife research, visitor safety, youth education, and Tribal engagement. Bozeman MONTANA

Whether viewed from your kitchen window or the scenic overlook at the end of a hiking trail,

Bozeman is a beautiful place to be. East of the continental divide but still nestled in the mountains, this is a unique place, the best of both Montana’s worlds. Bozeman is still an agricultural college town at heart, but it has grown far beyond those roots. With about 60,000 residents living in Bozeman and its neighbor Belgrade, the Southwest Montana economy thrives on tourism, technology industries, and manufacturing for the outdoor industry.

Abundant local parks help make this town in the “Valley of Flowers” an open and welcoming place, with most neighborhoods within walking distance of green space or a trailhead. The sculpture garden at the Bozeman Public Library is lovely to walk through, and there’s often a farmers’ market or fair in the adjacent park.

Artisan shops give Bozeman its funky vibe—from Biome Slow Craft, featuring 125+ artists and makers, to Paper and Grace, your one-stop shop for stationery

gifts. The restaurant scene is known for longtime classics, like Plonk Wine Bar, which has perfected the “magical union of food, wine, and music.” But there’s still room for newcomers, like Gute Laune, meaning “good mood” in German, which serves up Bavarian-style bratwurst crafted with local meats.

Many Bozemanites are drawn to the ski culture and the legendary terrain at Bridger Bowl, with its powder runs on the Ridge. The ski experience here stands far apart from the highly commercialized experiences of many other ski areas in the Rocky Mountains. And for motorsport enthusiasts, the snowmobiling in West Yellowstone and Cooke City is known all over the world, with over 400 miles of trails exploring this quiet, beautiful ecosystem.

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport is the largest airport in Montana with 15 non-stop flights to major cities. Many visitors just pass through on their way to the national park, but those who choose to stick around and see what Bozeman is all about might just end up setting down roots.

Quick FACTS

Bozeman’s Roots, Revitalized

The vintage steel water tower on the north end of Rouse Ave marks the Cannery District, a cluster of 70 businesses in 14 buildings. One hundred years ago, this water tower overlooked just one business, the original Bozeman Canning Company warehouse, founded in 1917 when the Gallatin Valley was the nation’s sweet pea capital.

In 2005, redevelopment efforts began to transform the bygone district into a vibrant new space for retail, business, and residential community. Retaining the original industrial character with key updates for functionality and modern needs, the Cannery District strikes the right revitalization balance—often easier said than done. Landscaping with native Montana grasses and flowers helps the space feel welcoming and refined.

Stop by the Cannery District to dine on Thai curry, noodles, and barbeque at Shan, a vibrant and unique culinary experience. Belly up at the Devil’s Toboggan, an elevated speakeasy, or It Will Always Be That Way, a cocktail lounge straight out of the 1970s. Shop for everything from fine stationary at Paper and Grace to backcountry recreation gear at Uphill Pursuits and Sitka Gear. The Cannery is also your stop for wellness, whether that’s training at Epic Fitness Center or maintaining your highlights at Madysen Rose Salon. For families, the State of Play offers a whimsical space for open-play sessions. And with nearly 40 offices filled by engineers, lawyers, and other professionals, the Cannery District is a bustling hub on a daily basis.

The Cannery District keeps it so fresh and fun that it’s hard to believe it has been 20 years since redevelopment began on the district. Even though it always feels up-and-coming, it’s now a time-tested Bozeman staple. PureWest’s Bozeman office is just down the street at 708 N Rouse Ave, less than a minute away from this bustling district.

Trailblazing From Town

With 10 distinct mountain ranges surrounding the Bozeman and Belgrade area, it’s always possible to gain a new perspective. Here’s just a few day hikes in close range to help you start your to-do list.

Bridger Range

Though famous for its skiing, the area is just as magical when the snow melts and becomes accessible for hikers. There is a mile-long path around a gorgeous, teal lake. From the Fairy Lake Campground, hikers can also follow trails ascending Sacagawea Peak and Hardscrabble Peak, the range’s two tallest summits.

Bangtail Range

This range, situated between Bozeman and Livingston, is popular with mountain bikers and motorized users. The Bangtail Divide Trail is an epic ridge traverse with 20 miles of trail above 6,500 feet. Multiple trailheads provide access for day hikes; one popular option is the 7.5-mile round trip to climb Grassy Mountain.

Madison Range

This narrow range, with Madison River to the west and the Gallatin River to the east, is best known for its most prominent summit, Lone Peak. Nearby Beehive Basin, popular among backcountry skiers, is a great spot to visit in summer. Hike 6.6 miles round trip to Beehive Lake for a satisfying alpine saunter.

Gallatin Range

Hyalite Canyon is a Bozeman staple, drawing a range of recreationists including rock and ice climbers, road and mountain bikers, backcountry skiers, hikers, and paddlers. Through extensive community support, the Hyalite Road is kept plowed in the wintertime, providing convenient access when most other mountain roads are buried. Up the east fork of Hyalite Creek, visit 8-foot Palisade Falls in this season to possibly see it frozen over.

Tobacco Root Mountains

From Bozeman, it’s easy to make out Hollowtop Peak, the highest summit on the horizon, by its distinct flat summit. Hike up to the lake that sits below that peak and three others also over 10,000 feet. You’re just as likely to encounter other trail users on ATVs as on horseback, so feel free to switch it up if your hiking boots have given you blisters by now.

FOUR BAR RANCHES BOZEMAN

An unprecedented opportunity to own in Springhill Community, one of Bozeman’s most coveted areas. These three ranches span 456± acres and are offered individually or as a combined legacy holding, all bordering National Forest. Aspen Ridge Ranch features a four-bedroom, two and one half bath log home, Corbly Creek frontage, and is situated on 114± acres. Bridger Foothills Ranch spans 142± acres and offers Limestone Creek frontage, prime build sites, and privacy. Springhill Ranch is comprised of 200± acres and includes a large shop and panoramic Bridger Mountain and valley views. Billings & RED LODGE

Our easternmost region represents the best of Montana, with a dynamic balance between city and town, mountain and plain. Billings, home to 120,000, is the largest city in the state, with another 50,000 community members in Yellowstone County. Since the railroad days, the Magic City has been a key trade and distribution center, serving Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas.

Billings laid down its cosmopolitan roots early in the railroad era, meaning many of the shops and restaurants are veritable institutions by now. Whatever the occasion or whatever you’re hungry for, you’ll find it in Billings. For a quick lunch on the go, swing by Mediterranean Soul for shawarma. For a white-tablecloth kind of night, make reservations at TEN, an American steakhouse reimagined for the modern era.

Folks who call Billings home like a good mix of recreation and the arts. Yellowstone Art Museum, the largest contemporary art museum in the state, draws in creatives, as well as events like the Magic City Blues Festival. For trails, there’s no better introduction to

Billings than the iconic Rimrocks, the sandstone cliffs guarding the north end of the city. New in 2023, the paved, multi-use Skyline Trail makes these unique land formations much more accessible. The scenery always provides a show; the plains give storms and sunrises a large stage, often with the Beartooth, Pryor, and Bighorn mountain ranges taking center stage.

An hour’s drive away up in the mountains, visitors from Whitefish and Sandpoint will reach a town that immediately feels like home: Red Lodge. As an entrance to the Beartooth Highway, summers are certainly busy, with a scenic and historic downtown district full of restaurants, galleries, shops, and wilderness outfitters ready to help you get set for a hike in the Beartooths, a braap through the snowy backcountry on a snowmobile, or a paddle on the Yellowstone.

Red Lodge Mountain keeps area restaurants and shops open and lively through the winter. This unpretentious and family-friendly ski area has so much character. Hop on the Stache Express—named for the general manager’s famous mustache—to access groomed, family-friendly

trails, or take the Coal Creek Quad to the expert terrain in Nichols Peak, a 9,300-foot summit, to find cold smoke powder.

This city and mountain town may not have much in common, but in both, you’ll certainly find hardworking, caring Montanans who appreciate their neighbors and love where they live.

Highway to the Sky

This stretch of U.S. Route 212 is the highest road in both Montana and Wyoming, switchbacking 5,000 feet up to Beartooth Pass, topping out at 10,947 feet, and fully immersing travelers in the glory of the alpine tundra. The Beartooth Highway offers a scenic approach to Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks via Cooke City, as well as trailheads to the AbsarokaBeartooth Wilderness.

The route opened nearly 90 years ago in the 1930s, thanks to the initiative of an entrepreneurial physician from Red Lodge who was looking to diversify the local coal-based economy with recreation. Beartooth Highway quickly became a destination in its own right, not just a scenic way to get to the parks. Don’t let the 68 miles pass by too quickly—make sure you have time to stop at key lookouts along the way, like Rock Creek and Quad Creek on the east side of the pass, or Clay Butte and Yellowstone Park on the west side.

To immerse yourself for a day on foot, we recommend the High Lakes Loop, which passes six breathtaking lakes, including one simply named “Beauty.” The 8-mile loop offers striking views of Lonesome Mountain, which stands out on the rolling plateau horizon, as its name suggests.

The pass typically opens on Memorial Day weekend and closes in mid-October, but this is always dependent on weather conditions. Most years, the snowpack at these high elevations lingers well into July. The Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area was established on the Twin Lakes Headwall in the 1960s as an alpine ski racing summer training center. Now it opens to the public for steep, sunny, slushy laps on the high-speed Poma lifts.

Whether you plan to travel through the Beartooth Plateau by ski, dusty trail, or pavement, you’ll love the road through this stunning landscape and the recreational access it provides.

Agriculture, Athletics & Aerosmith

If you live in Billings, you know the Metra, the sprawling public facility about a mile from downtown on the Yellowstone River. Even Montanans who don’t live in Billings are familiar with First Interstate Arena at MetraPark—it’s the state’s biggest event venue. Many paths cross here at this multi-use complex, which meets so many of the broader region’s needs from entertainment and trade to athletics and agriculture.

In the early 1900s, the Midland Empire Fair began bringing people from across Montana and the surrounding states to Billings. The fairgrounds auditorium was tragically lost to a fire in 1969, but in 1975, a new year-round facility opened that became known as the METRA: Montana Entertainment Trade and Recreation Arena. The longstanding tradition of a summer festival continues with MontanaFair, celebrating over 100 years of live music, agricultural exhibitors, and entertainment from August 8-16, 2025.

Throughout the years at the Metra, the centerpiece has always been the arena, a showcase for live music, professional sports, and more—even monster trucks. With capacity for 12,000 at concerts, stars like Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and Johnny Cash have graced the

stage. The arena is a go-to stop for the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) and has also hosted pre-season NBA games, Indoor Football League games, and WWE wrestling events. Aside from the headlining acts, the arena provides quality facilities for Montana youth sports, with turf, courts, and an ice rink for hockey and figure skating. The arena can even be used as a shelter in the event of community emergencies or natural disasters.

There are also two large trade show buildings on the Metra grounds, the Montana Pavilion and the Expo Center, with more than 100,000 square feet of space combined. Browse the latest in farming technology at the Montana Agri-Trade Expo, or the greatest in home design at the twice-annual Home Improvement Shows. Smaller events take place at various other buildings like Cedar Hall, where ski swaps and community square dances are hosted, or the Chiesa Plaza at the pond, which can be rented for gatherings.

It’s easy to see how the facility generates more than $100 million annually for the local economy! From agriculture to Aerosmith, the Metra’s range and ability to bring people together is impressive.
