1917-2011

My Grandmother, Lucille Martin, was my inspiration and mentor as an artist. She started teaching me how to paint when I was only about 5 years old. This issue is dedicated to her and her memory. Lucille was born in Carlsbad NM, June 7, l917, the first child of Homer and Angie Caiar. She attended school in Carlsbad and was valedictorian of her graduating class in 1934. An interest in oil painting developed in the late 1940s leading to a prolific painting career until her mid 80s. Lucille won numerous awards over the years, taught workshops in several different states and was recognized for her achievements in "Who's Who In American Art." Her

paintings are in public and private collections across the United States including both New Mexico and Arizona state capital buildings as well as being featured several times in "Arizona Highways" Magazine. —G.B. Martin

then & Now Makeover featuring Darrin Davis

Exceptional Extensions Pure’s Summer makeover candidate, Stephanie Tubbs, was looking to add length and fullness to her fine, shoulderlength dark hair. She wanted more than just the extra length most extensions provide, so Dallas-based hair-extension “guru” Darrin Davis transformed her tresses into a sexy and soft sweep with his signature extension technique. Developed exclusively after years of training under the masters in Hollywood, New York and his native Salt Lake City, the affable stylist experimented until he created a proprietary installation method that doesn’t damage a person’s natural hair, because it attaches the extension so that it "rests" on top of the natural hair instead of weaving, braiding, gluing or bonding – all of which can damage hair. His unique approach to Stephanie’s lengthy locks (a full 22”!) is further enhanced by using the finest quality human hair available (luxurious, soft hair with a natural cuticle and wave from Russia or Italy), and with Darrin’s deft installation, her new hair will last up to a year, with maintenance appointments to tighten the extensions approximately every 3 months. Extension hair comes in as many textures and colors as there are individuals,

so the right selection can seem daunting. Not so with Darrin; his expertise at choosing the best texture and shade to match each clients' mane leaves nothing to chance. An admitted perfectionist, Darrin’s used to hearing the words, “You would have never known! It looks like it’s your real hair!”, when people see the results. “Exactly.” Darrin smiles, “That’s the whole point." He adds, "I love to make people feel good about themselves. It’s crazy how adding length or thickness can transform a woman’s self esteem. People can now flip the hair they never had before!” Just don’t flip out at the cost, however…a new mane can set you back anywhere from $800-$3500, depending on the hair used, and takes about 4-5 hours to install. Stephanie‘s makeup was done by Ashley Salazar, using a bright palette of pop color to add a little glam and a whole lot of sophistication to Stephanie’s formerly bare face. Ready to go long and lush with a look like Stephanie’s? Call Darrin Davis Productions at the Neinast Salon, 214-850-8578 for an appointment. Located at 3622 Fairmount St. – Andrea Reich 22 Now

artist interview

the "Crazy" artist George Draghici George "Ghici" Draghici is a classically trained artist. He emigrated to the United States from Romania in the 1980's with his wife Gabriella and his two small sons. While in Romania, George earned 3 masters degrees from

the University of Bucharest, with the final masters degree in art restoration. Prior to moving to the United States George worked in Europe restoring ancient Frescos and other aging art in Orthodox churches.

The performance art that George has developed in the years since coming to America is a magical coming together of music and art. While selected musical selections are performed, either live or recorded, George interprets the music in real time on canvas using oil or acrylic paints. George tailors his performance depending on the audience, the venue, the organization, and event. In every case, the audience is witness to the creative birth of a unique work of fine art, its development, and its completion. George brings his unique artistic “eye” to everything he does. His sense of humor, his passion, and his amazing talent blend in the moment of creation. Today you will witness one of the truly amazing things you will ever see. I give you, “Ghici”! It is a magical moment when we are fortunate enough to witness the act of

artistic creation. To be present when a true master takes inspiration from the moment and environment, and using his genius creates a work of art is a rare privilege. Such is the feeling you get when witnessing George 'Ghici' Draghici painting and interpreting music in real time as it is performed. Countless volumes have been written about artists and the things that inspired them. Attending a Ghici performance allows us to be moved by the same elements as the artist creating a unique bond between the creator and the witness. I have enjoyed watching as Ghici has painted to live music, recorded music, in schools, and in large convention halls. Each time it has been a unique and satisfying experience. There is nothing quite like a Ghici performance. I heartily recommend that you too experience the magic of a Ghici performance. —Henry P. “Pete” Van de Putte, Jr.

Torrontés - A Versatile & Refreshing Summer Wine Greetings! To all the fine folks reading this; wine drinkers and wine drinkers to-be. This monthly column is for you. If you have already tasted the delicious beverage I am about to detail below; this will serve as a welcome reminder for you to run to your favorite retailer to purchase a couple Olivier Bourgoin bottles (or a case). If this is - aka. "Olivier new to you, you are about to the Wine Guy" embark on a taste buds adventure with us. aromas of green melon and white peach. Other flavors often associated with Torrontés are flowers, peach pit and other citrusy fruit including orange and grapefruit. Two favorite brands available in the San Antonio market are: La Yunta and Gougenheim. Kept (briefly) in French oak you will find it provides a relatively long and crisp finish especially for such a light wine. Both La Yunta and Gougenheim Torrontés are inexpensive (you should be able to find them in the $ 9.00 to $ 12.00 - or less if they are on sale). La Yunta hails from the Fatima Valley and Gougenheim comes to us via the better known region of Mendoza. Current vintages should be 2010 as this wine is not meant to be cellared. Reminiscent in some ways to Viognier, simply refrigerate, open and drink by the pool, on the patio as an aperitif or it will pair well at your table with an array of cheeses, seafood, poultry, smoked meats and one of my favorites: Thaï food. I’ll come back and talk about some more wine pairings and fun foods to share them with soon. Make sure and send me an email if you would like to be invited to our wine dinners and tastings. —Olivier Bourgoin Olivier@NowMagSA.com

Exceptional, with Station, long known for hot sizzling steaks a poppy seed bun crusty outside and is now earning a reputation for their steamed to soft perfection on the inside. Happy Hour. Serving up refreshing and delicious two dollar mini martinis the bar’s atmosphere captures the romance and nostalgia of a private club, a topnotch spot in historical downtown San Antonio. The list of specialty martinis includes The Blood Orange, The Sunset and The Ginger Blossom. My favorite was bartender Andrew's signature CucumberMartini. Andrew shakes a mean martini, very cold, shaved ice and the vodka is infused with Cucumber Martini cucumbers and lime. I was pleasantly surprised by their 66 Now

The thick, juicy, buttery, little hamburger was lightly peppered and slathered with melted gooey Swiss cheese and served with sweet crispy onion ring slivers. The sliders are part of the $5 Happy Hour menu that included Crispy Thai sweetened calamari, shrimp and crab gratin and boudin. Happy Hour Monday-Friday 4-7. Moving into the lovely southern modern dining room with its brick walls and mint green leather booths, bright pieces of San Antonio art, tree lights and mirrors everywhere — gives you an easy elegant feeling. The wine by the glass was delightful and affordable. Ruth's Chris signature Prime Sliders steak, the huge 22 oz. Filet of Beef

Perfect Date at Citrus Citrus is located inside the wonderful Hotel Valencia at 150 East Houston Street. To start off, the setting is appealing from the fountain in the entry level lobby to the soft and diffused lights sprinkled throughout the building. This is a great place for a romantic evening. On this inaugural “NOW Magazine” outing my dining companions were publisher Gregory Martin and his lovely assistant Cassie Tolentino. For starters, we were treated to colorful cocktails, aptly created by bartender Richard Ramos from the “V Bar.” The Mexican Martini was my favorite (a kind of Margarita made with Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Silver Tequila and Olive and lime juice added; served with three large pimento stuffed

olives as garnish). The drink was attractive and refreshing. So was the “Valencia Dementia” a liquid smorgassborg of juices including orange, pineapple, lime, lemon and cranberry juices with Ciroc Vodka and Cointreau. Although sweeter than the Mexican Martini, the Dementia offers another primer pleasant for the eye as well as for the palate. Along with our cocktails came a tiny and interesting “amuse bouche” composed of a thin slice of melon sprinkled with soy sauce. The presentation for this and throughout the meal was flawless. Our appetizer course came in the form of three of Chef Jeff Balfour’s favorites. A must try and according to MIchael Menchaca, our server - the number one, 70 Now

Jumbo Blue-Crab Cake top selling appetizer on the menu for the past eight years; the Jumbo Blue-Crab Cake. Not only was it generously copious it was also flavorful and with a lovely texture. The more than ample crab meat serving was finely chopped - almost but not quite to a purée consistency. It was placed on a salad bed of toasted pumpkin seed, avocado and baby mesclun. In addition we also were treated to the garlic and butter (GIANT) Poached Gulf Shrimp, served over butternut squash-polenta and buna-shimeji mushrooms. In spite of its enormous size, the shrimp was packed Pan Roasted South Texas Antelope with flavor (which is often not the case when shrimp is too big). As all the other dishes, it was cooked to perfection. To round out the starters, pan seared diver scallop with stuffed squash blossom and saffron aïoli followed. This was equally well executed. Not one flavor outshone the others; all of them were subtly blended in a swirl of aromatic delight. On to the main course — what a treat! Although there were only three of us, the Garlic Shrimp over-zealous staff actually delivered FOUR entrées: 1. Natural Fillet of Beef served with butter braised potatoes, roasted mushrooms and a merlot reduction sauce. 2. Pan Roasted South Texas Antelope, with Texas peppers, honey-chipotle potato purée and chiffonade mustard greens. 3. Pork Tenderloin (labeled “sous-vide,” which is a French term for “under vacuum” and is a cooking method which allegedly allows for foods to be cooked slowly in a plastic bag. I know that does not sound very romantic but the result, if well exceuted - which it was, produces some very tender and juicy results). This was served with applebeer sake sauce, a poached quail egg (a nice Now 71

restaurant Review touch) and a Spring succotash. Last but not least: 4. Char Grilled Bronzini Filets (a type of sea bass) with golden chanterelle mushrooms and salt cod fritter. Top pick? Tough choice! If I absolutely had to vote on one of the four I would probably lean toward number three or maybe two. Nah! it would have to be number four or maybe one. See what I mean? For our wine I selected a bottle of Pinot Noir from a nice Oregon (Willamette Valley), which I visited several years back. Not only is Pinot Noir my favorite varietal, in this case I wanted a wine that would match well with all the different dishes we were served. I noted some black cherry on the nose followed with spice and mild earthy tones, smooth plummy finish and general accents of blackberry and other dark berries. Overall, it was truly a very pleasant meal and the two desserts of cinnamon croissant bread pudding with a Bourbon glaze plus the “Rich” chocolate gateau with chocolate gelato were a smooth finish to a lavish dinner. Olivier The Wine Guy’s PERFECT DATE SUGGESTIONS: Cocktails: - Mexican Martini (Savory) - Valencia Dementia (on the sweet side) Appetizers: - Crab Cake - Big enough to share - but if you must order two.... - Shrimp or Scallop 72

Texas de Brazil Start with a massive salad bar and then let the meat fest begin. Every diner has a small coaster-sized disk. When it's green, the waiters — dressed as gauchos from the Pampas — come by the tables offering various cuts of meats. They keep coming until the diner flips the disk to show red. 313 East Houston St

At least that's what Mini is saying about its new Mini coupe, the fifth model to join its lineup since Mini's revival in 2001. The basis for the new car, including its complete lower body, is the existing convertible, to which the Mini design team added a new upper section and a large liftback-style tailgate at the rear—both which add unique visual appeal. Among the more obvious design flourishes is a new windshield that is raked back an additional 13 degrees than that on the hardtop and which is a good deal shorter. The side glass is also shallower, giving the Mini coupe a chopped-top appeal. The roof has been styled along the lines of the Mini Countryman, with a rear section that curves down for added volume. It also incorporates a fixed spoiler element above a heavily angled rear window that forms part of the

tailgate. An additional active spoiler, the first ever on a Mini model, is set within the trunk lid and deploys at 50 mph to provide added downforce and improved stability at high speeds. The new coupe manages to stand out from the small-car crowd, and for many prospective buyers this will clearly count more than anything else. Mini is set to offer the coupe with its existing N18 turbocharged 1.6-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine in North

America. It delivers 121 hp in the Mini Cooper coupe, 181 hp in the Cooper S coupe and 208 hp in the range-topping John Cooper Works coupe model. Gearbox choices include a standard sixspeed manual along with an optional six-speed automatic on all models except for the top-of-the-line JCW coupe. Mini's aim with the coupe was to create a car that went one better than the hardtop in terms of overall driver appeal. However, the need to use as many carryover components as possible in a bid to make the new car profitable means the mechanical package is virtually the same--and in many respects, so is the way it drives. The low roof makes entry a little more difficult than in the hardtop, but the seats are set low enough to ensure that

even tall drivers can be accommodated without any headroom issues, thanks in part to a scalloped-out headliner. Although the driving position is unchanged from that of the hardtop, the more heavily raked windshield and lower roof gives the coupe a more sporting air from the driver's seat. The drawback? Visibility, particularly to the rear, which is restricted by the narrow glass. Performance-wise, there's little to criticize. The turbocharged 1.6-liter engine in the Cooper S version develops 177 lb-ft of torque between 1,600 rpm and 5,000 rpm--including a peak of 192 lb-ft between 1,700 rpm and 4,500 rpm, giving the coupe a good turn of speed out of the blocks and tremendous flexibility on the run. Mini claims the coupe will run from 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds and has a top speed of 149 mph — it's the in-gear acceleration that impresses the most. Plant your foot at low revs in low gears, and you're treated to solid acceleration that is all part and parcel of the coupe's eager nature. —G.B. Martin
