GRADUATE

Despite the lingering effects of the pandemic, 2021/2022 has been an outstanding year for the White Lodging – J.W. Marriott, Jr. School of Hospitality and Management. Our students and graduate faculty generated new insights into a range of cuttingedge issues. Our graduate students published over 19 articles this year and participated in conferences around the world. The quality of their work was recognized with best paper and poster awards at ITSA, ISTTE, ICHRIE, and HHS Life Inspired Research Poster Symposium.
The Graduate Student Association provided rich social and developmental programs throughout the year, and helped create a rich, supportive environment for graduate learning. Their innovative programs, including the research toolkit series, were greatly appreciated. Thanks to the great leadership of Rachel Zhang, Sam Bissenbina and Ailin Fei.
We also celebrate the achievements of our graduating online masters' students. This year's graduates balanced not only work and home commitments with their rigorous online learning courses but the hardest days of the pandemic as well.
It is heartening to see the impact our graduating students are making in the world –in both academia and our profession. Our doctoral graduates are teaching at prestigious universities around the world, including Boston University, Hong Kong Polytechnic, and University of Philippines – to name a few. At the same time, graduates of our Masters program are contributing to the success of leading companies like P&G, Delta, and Ascend hotels.
As we move beyond the pandemic years, the graduate program is well positioned to continue its mission of developing future global leaders in academic and industry. Boiler Up !
Jonathon Day Graduate Program DirectorFormerly an undergraduate of our program, Xinyue advanced her degree and scholarship within wine and spirits. She has gone on to design a pilot survey examining perceptions of value regarding wine, co designed a survey to examine the influence of virtual reality on wine education, and is currently investigating the consumer’s perceptions and purchase intentions of sparkling wine. In October 2021, she won the best poster award for her work with VR and wine appreciation from International Travel and Tourism Educators (ISTTE) organization.
Xinyue has also engaged in her collegiate community by volunteering or participating as a leader with HTM Graduate Student Association, HTM Black Tie Dinner, and Purdue’s LGBTQ Center.
Mohamed came to Purdue as a Ph.D. visiting scholar in the fall of 2018 to do research under the direction of HTM Professor Xinran Lehto. Astonished by the top rated hospitality program, Mohamed decided to continue pursuing a Ph.D. at Purdue. His research is focused on food tourism and tourist food experiences Specifically, he examines how to leverage the potential of local food in destination marketing and attractiveness His research also extends to the effects of local food experiences on tourists' interpersonal relations and wellbeing.

Morgan Mason, a Masters student, is the “Early Career” award winner for this year’s She Has a Deal competition She was awarded $50,000 in deal equity through the SHaD Prosperity Fund 1, a vehicle for investing in women-led projects.
She Has a Deal (SHaD) was founded to create pathways to hotel ownership and development for women through education, networking, and mentorship. Each year, SHaD conducts a pitch competition where participants present their investment concepts.
Morgan pitched the acquisition of a 78-key Residence Inn in Lakeland Florida. Her submission addressed competitive advantage, market analysis, due diligence, and return on investment. She told Hertalier.com that she felt her final pitch sealed the deal. “I was calm, poised, and confident, and I answered the judges’ questions as if I had been pitching deals for years.”
“Participating in She Has a Deal is the best decision I could have made The experience I have gained is invaluable and I am so happy to have made lifelong connections with other outstanding women along the way.” Morgan told Lodging Magazine in a recent interview. Tracy Prigmore, the founder of SHaD added in the same article “the world is yearning to experience the brilliance of these women in hospitality…When more women are owning and developing hotels, the industry will explode with innovative growth.”
The “Early Career” track of the SHaD Pitch competition was comprised of women either pursuing college or graduate degrees or recent graduates. Morgan beat out “Early Career” teams from San Diego State, Michigan State, University of New Haven, Cal State Pomona, George Washington University, and University of Pennsylvania.
Up, MorganRachel has just been selected as a Purdue University Service Learning Fellow for Fall 2022 The Service-Learning Fellows Program is designed to foster the development and institutionalization of service learning courses and curricula, projects, and scholarly pursuits at Purdue and strengthen collaborative efforts and outcomes in communities.
We are excited to share that Clinical Assistant Professor Stephen Leitch and Ph D student Rachel Zhang are awarded as the highly selective Purdue Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) fellows for 2022 2023. Leitch and Zhang propose to incorporate research to the Managerial Finance and Accounting course they are teaching, and they strive to provide support to engage undergraduate students to research in the hospitality industry. They are excited to continue working with small businesses and research on solutions to the challenges that the local communities are facing CURE Purdue trains instructors to involve large numbers of students in the excitement of cutting-edge research projects, providing them with necessary research-skill development and more fully motivating them in coursework.
Rachel was also the recipient of the Arthur Avery Foodservice Center Grant of $750 for foodservice research

Choosing green peer to peer accommodation: For the earth or for ourselves?
This study examined the tourism potential of a destination from the viewpoint of travelers who are interested in exploring new horizons in order to better fulfill their expectations. To this end, this study coined the term destination curiosity (DC), which is defined as enthusiasm for travel that is reflective of curiosity and the desire to explore and acquire knowledge through actual travel experiences in authentic environments DC was conceptualized in accordance with the clockspeed model This study suggests that it is important to enhance DC in order to activate tourism for specific destinations
You've narrowed down your research topic and your major professor told you it's time to do a literature review. Where do you go from here? In this mini session, HTM Librarian Heather Howards will show students how to utilize Purdue's vast library system which includes 3,317,331 printed volumes and electronic books; 227,814 electronic and print journals; and government documents and microforms in excess of 400,000. Additionally, Heather will go over citation tools that will help students organize, manage and format citations as they find the perfect articles, books, and datasets for their review.
