CARTA, FORBICE, SASSO Quando all’inizio degli anni Trenta del Novecento Alexander Calder realizza i primi Mobiles, la scultura vive uno dei suoi più significativi momenti di svolta. Con l’apparire di quelle strutture leggere, sospese, nelle quali fili sottili tengono insieme infiorescenze di lamine metalliche dai colori pieni e dalle sagome irregolari, non è solo la forma a essere messa in discussione - come, mettiamo, quando Vassili Kandinski apre al mondo l’avventura dell’astratto - e nemmeno la percezione. È proprio la sostanza ontologica della scultura a perdere i suoi connotati. Ciò che dai tempi dell’arte ellenica si identificava con qualcosa di solido, imponente, monumentale, eterno diventa di colpo qualcosa di leggero, volatile, mutevole al primo soffio di vento. Le avanguardie stanno scardinando tutte le certezze dell’arte, e mentre la fotografia incalza la pittura proponendosi come l’alternativa perfetta nel dare una lettura del mondo - e assestando così la spinta definitiva verso la dissoluzione della forma nella direzione di una visione emotiva della realtà - la scultura subisce gli scossoni della perdita di punti di riferimento legata all’instabile situazione politica. Ed ecco che un giovane scultore americano, un uomo di indole allegra, enfant prodige dalla creatività multiforme, ribalta le regole e decide che la scultura non è necessariamente marmo indistruttibile, non sta necessariamente su un piedistallo, non rappresenta per forza qualcuno o qualcosa, ma è gioia cromatica e soffio vitale.

Da quel momento in poi, dunque, la scultura non sarà mai più la stessa. Entreranno a far parte di quella categoria lampade al neon e installazioni in stoffa, uova sode e scovolini giganti, forme in cartapesta e ammassi di rami, ambienti luminosi e acqua vaporizzata, ma soprattutto si farà strada l’idea che la scultura, come del resto l’arte tutta, non è più solo una questione di materiali e di forme, ma è soprattutto una questione di significati e di emozioni.

Valeria Vaccaro - artista giovanissima ma già di grande sostanza - fa un doppio salto e dalla messa in discussione del materiale passa al suo recupero, ma ribaltandone l’intenzione e il senso. Il marmo - perché di marmo qui stiamo parlando - non è più materia inerte e preziosa finalizzata alla monumentalità, ma diventa gioco percettivo ingaggiato con lo spettatore. Il marmo si nasconde, si cela, si mostra sotto false spoglie, gioca a rimpiattino e sorprende. Resta dietro una tenda e poi, come sotto il gesto preciso di un prestigiatore, appare improvvisamente a scatenare la reazione, a strappare l’applauso. Se si traveste da legno mette in mostra venature e imperfezioni, fino alle schegge che potrebbero ferirci le dita; se sceglie di interpretare la parte della carta, allora indossa spiegazzature che ne turbano la perfezione. Non interpreta parti da primattore, qui, ma sta di lato. Si appoggia modestamente al pavimento nella forma di un pallet, come se fosse il rimasuglio di qualche

grosso trasporto. Oppure resta lì, cassa da imballaggio anonima, con le precise indicazioni di appoggio e di apertura, a indicarci la preziosità di un fantomatico contenuto che dovrebbe - in teoria - pretendere tutte le nostre attenzioni. Ci guarda e ci tende agguati. In un panorama artistico come quello attuale, dove il pubblico è chiamato ad applaudire mosche morte e sanitari d’oro, il visitatore si avvicina a un lavoro come quello di Valeria Vaccaro già in qualche modo preparato, come se il fatto di trovare un vecchio pallet appoggiato sul pavimento di una galleria d’arte sia qualcosa che ancora lo sconvolge nel profondo, sì, anche se non osa confessarlo, ma che tutto sommato si sente disposto ad accettare. E quando coraggiosamente (è solo un vecchio pallet, in fondo, non una tela di Leonardo: potrò toccarlo, no?) allunga la mano per sfiorare l’oggetto, l’inaspettata consistenza gelida lo spiazza. Ma come?

Nel percorso delle sinapsi dalla mano al cervello avviene un cortocircuito tra l’aspettativa e la realtà.

Ancora più sconvolgente quando arriva a coscienza la consapevolezza che quello, inequivocabilmente, è marmo.

Non è però la sorpresa il fine del lavoro di Valeria Vaccaro. Un’artista come lei non si accontenterebbe mai di un coup de théâtre. Il senso va ben oltre.

Affascinata fin dall’inizio della sua carriera dagli effetti della combustione sui materiali, quando si è avvicinata al marmo, l’artista ha subito capito come il suo portato di significati e la sua connotazione di solidità e di eternità ben si adattassero alla sua ricerca. Perché la sua ricerca, al di là delle sorprese e dei giochi di prestigio, dell’immagine elegante e ben confezionata,

dell’apparente facilità di lettura, è incentrata sulla trasformazione alchemica, sulla metamorfosi. Sul divenire. Quello che le interessa sopra ogni cosa è portare la nostra attenzione su situazioni di instabilità, su contrapposizioni che creino disequilibri e dunque domande. Perché la vera arte ha sostanzialmente due caratteristiche: deve raccontare la società dentro la quale cronologicamente è collocata (e direi che nulla ci definisce oggi meglio del concetto di instabilità) e deve porre delle domande. L’arte vera, infatti, non chiude con delle risposte, ma apre e scandaglia, sconvolge il pensiero e ribalta le convinzioni. Ecco allora che questi pallet, queste casse, questi fogli di carta portano il segno di una bruciatura, più o meno devastante, più o meno profonda. Il fuoco che trasforma - ma che allo stesso tempo tutto purifica e dunque poi tutto ricrea - sembra qui essersi momentaneamente fermato, e quella che l’artista ci propone è la fotografia dell’istante, immortalata nel marmo. Ed è il marmo, paradossalmente, a farsi abitare da questo fuoco impossibile e simbolico che su di lui mai avrebbe attecchito, ma che attecchisce nella nostra mente - sulla forma che questo marmo ha deciso di rappresentare. Una forma scomoda e umile.

La forma di qualcosa che non ha importanza, che di solito l’occhio nemmeno raccoglie. Ma che qui, nello spazio dell’arte, è costretto ad assimilare. Sarebbe una forzatura dire che Valeria Vaccaro vuole farci riflettere su tutto ciò che il nostro occhio si rifiuta di guardare?

Sarebbe scorretto chiedere a noi stessi se queste casse - la cui normale funzione è quella di essere aperte e abbandonate in cantina - sono qui a ricordarci che l’occhio va allenato a guardare tutto, a percepire

tutto, anche ciò che ci sembra fastidioso e turba le nostre sicurezze? A farci riflettere su come a volte non riusciamo a guardare - magari - tutte le persone con lo stesso sguardo e la stessa attenzione? Forse sarebbe una forzatura, sì. Ma è inevitabile sottolineare come una delle contrapposizioni sulle quali le piace portare la nostra attenzione sia proprio fra oggetto di serie B e oggetto prezioso, scarto e opera d’arte.

Stiamo parlando, qui, di una purezza del pensiero che è inevitabile conseguenza di qualsiasi rivoluzione delle certezze: fare piazza pulita sui pregiudizi non può che portare a pensare con più lucidità. Il gioco di contrapposizione tra la leggerezza della carta e la pesantezza del marmo - così come quello tra la fragilità del materiale rappresentato e l’eternità di quello che invece realmente è stato utilizzato - fa da corollario a un unico fine che è quello di ripulire lo sguardo e di riportarci puri alla percezione. E la messa in discussione delle differenze tra ciò che viene letto di serie A e ciò che viene letto di serie B è ulteriormente enfatizzata dalla scelta di affinare il gioco di contrapposizione tra contenitore e contenuto spingendoci a immaginare che le casse siano nate per contenere qualcosa. Cosa, però, non è dato sapere. Una caratteristica del procedimento di Valeria Vaccaro, infatti, è quella di aver deciso di lavorare il marmo per lastre, invece di operare sul pezzo unico. Il motivo è essenzialmente pratico: materiali meno pesanti da maneggiare. E tuttavia questo, da qualcuno, è considerato una specie di sacrilegio. Ma del resto, si sa, il compito di pensare fuori dal quadrato nei campi che una volta erano riservati agli uomini - e l’arte è uno di quelli - è molto spesso affidato alle donne.

Ecco dunque che Valeria Vaccaro ribalta un’altra certezza, e quando ci ha dimostrato che ciò che avevamo creduto legno è marmo, ci fa capire che comunque dentro un vuoto c’è. Un vuoto che a questo punto non riusciamo più a non immaginare, e che subito sentiamo il bisogno di esplorare per carpirne il contenuto. È l’ennesimo regalo dell’artista. Allo spettatore e, in una maniera tutta particolare, al collezionista. Per lui, e solo per lui, il gesto di aprire la cassa (di legno, questa volta) che contiene la cassa di marmo (l’opera) che a sua volta contiene l’idea, diventa una performance, un dono. Un gesto d’intesa intimo e segreto.

Merita un discorso a parte l’installazione Quel che rimane, nella quale l’artista ricostruisce per intero la cameretta di un bambino. L’armadio a due ante, il lettino con le sbarre, la piccola sedia a dondolo, il triciclo e il cavallino sono disposti come se davvero un bambino avesse appena lasciato la stanza. Eppure c’è qualcosa di disturbante, come un’atmosfera sospesa, quasi gotica, che non arriva mai alla piena consapevolezza, ma che pervade sottilmente i pensieri. Non solo per quelle estremità bruciate che fanno pensare al day after di qualcosa che potrebbe davvero essere stato spaventoso, non solo per la foggia inequivocabilmente antica degli oggetti (ma non abbastanza perché ognuno di noi si sia trovato ad averne per le mani almeno uno assolutamente identico, cosa che crea in noi uno spaesamento assoluto), ma piuttosto per quella sensazione di freddo che dall’installazione emana.

Valeria Vaccaro realizza infatti qui la magia di riuscire a comunicare la tattilità gelida del marmo al solo sguardo. Nonostante la mimesi sia perfetta, e i nostri

occhi percepiscano quegli oggetti come sostanziati di legno, inspiegabilmente quel legno ci appare ghiacciato e distante. Si tratta di una distanza temporale, come se stessimo assistendo a qualcosa accaduto in un prima che oramai non ci appartiene più; perché il fuoco, qui, la materia della trasformazione, ci racconta di un’epoca perduta per sempre, quella dell’infanzia, profondamente radicata dentro di noi nello stratificarsi delle memorie e dei momenti chiave, nodale per comprendere il perché di ciò che siamo ora, intrisa nel ricordo di nostalgia, ma anche punteggiata dai momenti che hanno segnato i nostri incubi e le nostre paure. Ci guarda da lì, immobilizzata nel marmo, sostanziata di oggetti che sentiamo nostri e tuttavia remoti. E, senza capire perché, ci sentiamo come se stessimo fissando uno specchio.

R O C K , PA P E R , S C I S S O R S When Alexander Calder made the first Mobiles at the beginning of the 1930s, sculpture experienced one of its most significant turning points. With the appearance of those light, suspended structures, in which thin wires hold together inflorescences of irregularly shaped, colourful metallic plates, it isn’t simply form that is questioned - as, let’s say, when Vassili Kandinski opens the world to the adventure of the abstract - and not even perception.

It is the sculpture’s very ontological substance that loses its connotations. That which from the times of Hellenic art has been identified with something solid, imposing, monumental, eternal suddenly becomes something light, volatile, changeable at the first breath of wind. The avant-gardes are deconstructing all of art’s certainties, and while photography is hot on the heels of painting, offering itself as a perfect alternative to interpret the world - and so delivering the definitive push towards the dissolution of form and an emotional vision of reality - sculpture suffers the repercussions of the loss of reference points tied to the unstable political situation. And here a young American sculptor, a man of cheerful temperament, enfant prodige of multi-faceted creativity, overturns the rules and decides that sculpture is not necessarily indestructible marble, does not necessarily stand on a pedestal, does not have to represent someone or something, but is chromatic joy and vital breath. From that moment on sculpture will never be the same. Neon lamps and fabric installations become part of that category, along with hard-boiled eggs and giant pipe cleaners, papier-mâché shapes and masses of branches, luminous environments and vaporised water, but above all they make way for the idea that sculpture, as indeed art as a whole, is no longer only a question of materials and forms, but most of all a question of meanings and emotions.

Valeria Vaccaro - young but already an artist of great substance - takes a double leap and from the questioning of the material passes to its recovery, but overturning its intention and meaning. Marble - because it is of marble that we are speaking of here - is no longer an inert

and precious material aimed at monumentality, but becomes a perceptive game engaged with the viewer. The marble hides itself, it is hidden, it shows itself in disguise, it plays hide-and-seek and it surprises. It hides behind a curtain and then, as under the precise gesture of a conjurer, it suddenly appears to stir up a reaction, stealing the applause. If it disguises itself as wood, it puts on show grains and imperfections, down to the splinters that could hurt one’s fingers, if it chooses to play the part of paper, then it wears creases that ruffle its perfection. Here it does not play the leading role, but stays on the sideline. It rests itself modestly on the floor in the form of a pallet, as if it were the remnant of some big haulage. Otherwise it stays there, anonymous packing case, with precise indications for its placement and opening, suggesting the preciousness of an elusive content that should - theoretically - demand our complete attention. It looks at us and ambushes us. In an artistic environment such as the current one where the public is expected to applaud dead flies and gold toilets, the visitor approaches work like that of Valeria Vaccaro already prepared in some way, as if finding an old pallet resting on the floor of an art gallery is something that deep down still upsets him, even if he does not dare to confess it, but on the whole he feels willing to accept. And when one bravely stretches out a hand to touch the object (it is only an old pallet after all, not a canvas by Leonardo: I could touch it, couldn’t I), the unexpected icy consistency takes one completely aback. But how? On the path of the synapses between the hand and the brain, a short circuit occurs between expectation and reality. Even more upsetting when we become aware that it is, unequivocally, marble.

However the surprise is not the point of Valeria Vaccaro’s work. An artist like her would never be satisfied with a coup de théâtre. The meaning goes much further. Fascinated from the start of her career with the effects of combustion on materials, when she approached marble, the artist immediately understood how its range of meanings and connotation of solidity and eternity were

well suited to her research. Because her research, beyond surprises and sleight of hand, of elegant and well-crafted image, the apparent ease of reading, is focused on alchemical transformation, on metamorphosis. On becoming. That which interests her above all is to bring our attention to situations of instability, to juxtapositions that create imbalances and therefore questions. Because, fundamentally, true art has two characteristics: it must describe the society in which it is chronologically placed (and I would say nothing defines today better than the concept of instability) and it must ask questions. True art does not close with answers, but opens and scours, unsettles thought and overturns convictions. Which is why these pallets, these boxes, these pieces of paper bear burn marks, somewhat devastating, somewhat profound. The fire that transforms - but at the same time purifies and then recreates everything - seems here to have been temporarily paused, that which the artist proposes is the photograph of the instant, immortalized in marble. And it is the marble, paradoxically, that is made to live by this impossible and symbolic fire that never could have taken hold of the marble but that takes hold - in our minds - of the form that this marble has decided to represent. An awkward and humble form.

The form of something of no importance, that usually the eye doesn’t even take in. But that here, in the art space, it is obliged to absorb it. Would it be a stretch to say that Valeria Vaccaro wants to make us reflect on everything that our eye refuses to look at? Would it be wrong to ask ourselves if these boxes - the normal function of which is to be opened and abandoned in the basement - are here to remind us that the eye must be trained to look at everything, to perceive everything, even what seems annoying and disturbs our security?

To make us reflect on how sometimes we are not able - maybe - to look at all people with the same gaze and the same attention? Maybe it would be a stretch, yes. But it inevitably underlines how one of the contrasts to which she likes to bring our attention is precisely between the second class object and the precious object, waste and work of art.

We are speaking here of a purity of thought that is the inevitable consequence of any revolution of certainties: to begin with a clean slate can only lead to more lucid thinking. The play on the juxtaposition of the lightness of paper and the weight of marble - like that between the fragility of the represented material and the eternity of that which has actually been used - a corollary for the sole purpose of refreshing the eye and bringing us back to a pristine perception. And the questioning of the differences between what is read as in the first class and what is read in the second class is further emphasized by the choice to refine the game of contrast between container and content, pushing us to imagine that the boxes were made to contain something.

What, however, is not known. A characteristic of Valeria Vaccaro’s method is the decision to work with sheets of marble, instead of a single piece.

The motive is essentially practical: lighter materials to manage. And yet for some this is considered a kind of sacrilege. But then, as we know, the task of thinking outside the box in the fields that were once reserved for men - and art is one of those - is very often entrusted to women. Here Valeria Vaccaro overturns another certainty, and when she shows us that which we believed to be wood is marble, she makes us understand there is a void inside. A void that at this point we can no longer imagine, and immediately feel the need to explore in order to understand its content. It is yet another gift from the artist. To the viewer and, in a particular way, to the collector. For them, and only for them, the gesture of opening the case (wooden, this time) containing the marble chest (the work) which in turn contains the idea, becomes a performance, a gift. An intimate and secret gesture of understanding.

The installation Quel che rimane (That which remains), in which the artist reconstructs a child’s bedroom, merits a separate discussion. The double doored wardrobe, the barred cot, the little rocking chair, the tricycle and the toy horse are arranged as if a child had really just left the room. And yet there is something disturbing, like an atmosphere in suspense, almost gothic, that never reaches one’s full awareness but which subtly pervades ones thoughts. Not only for those burnt edges that make one think of the day after something that could have been quite frightening, not only for the unequivocally antique appearance of the objects (but not enough for each of us to have found ourselves with at least one absolutely

identical in our hands, which creates absolute disorientation in us), but rather for that sensation of coldness that emanates from the installation. Here Valeria Vaccaro creates the magic of being able to communicate the tactile chill of the marble at a glance. Although the mimesis is perfect, and our eyes perceive those objects as wood, inexplicably that wood appears to us frozen and distant.

It is a temporal distance, as if we were witnessing something that happened in a before that now no longer belongs to us; because fire, here, the substance of transformation, tells us of an age lost forever, that of childhood, profoundly rooted within us in the stratification of memories and key moments, essential to understand the why of what we are now, steeped in the memory of nostalgia, but also punctuated by the moments that marked our nightmares and our fears. There, immobilized in the marble, substantiated with objects that we feel are our own and yet are remote. And, without understanding why, we feel like we’re staring at a mirror.

Un lavoro elegante e dalla realizzazione impeccabile in cui il materiale della scultura per eccellenza diventa simbolo della società liquida che ci contraddistingue. La scultura infatti rinnega per certi versi se stessa, ripensando il materiale nobile per oggetti che di nobile non hanno nulla: dal pallet, alla cassa da imballaggio, fino alla classica busta da ufficio destinata a essere lacerata e poi gettata via. Un’allusione che si fa ancora più sottile nella realizzazione scultorea di vecchi giocattoli, di un triciclo, di un lettino da bambino con le sponde: la cameretta del passato si trasforma qui in una celebrazione del tempo che passa e che rende questi oggetti inevitabilmente inutili. E un senso di spaesamento invade lo spettatore quando si rende conto che ciò che da lontano gli sembrava una giocosa ricostruzione di un ambiente infantile, da vicino si rivela il monumento a un tempo che non tornerà più. La trasformazione, la metamorfosi, il divenire sono evidenziati nel lavoro dell’artista anche dal ricorrere dell’effetto combustione. La sua materia, infatti, appare spesso invasa da una serie di bruciature che ne denotano la fragilità, la destinazione all’impermanenza. Tutta costruita sui contrasti tra pesante e leggero, eterno ed effimero, prezioso e ordinario, dunque, l’opera di Valeria Vaccaro ci mette di fronte all’incertezza del nostro tempo.

Elegant work and impeccable in its realisation in which the sculpture’s material par excellence becomes symbolic of the fluid society that distinguishes us. In fact in some ways the sculpture here renounces itself, rethinking the noble material into objects which have nothing noble about them: from the pallet to the crate, from the sheet of paper to the classic office envelope destined to be ripped open and then thrown away. An allusion that becomes even more subtle in the sculptural realization of old toys, a tricycle, a child’s cot: here the bedroom of the past turns into a celebration of time that passes and makes these objects inevitably useless. And a sense of disorientation invades the viewers when they realise that what from afar seems like a playful reconstruction of an infant’s environment, up close reveals a monument to a time, which will not return. The transformation, the metamorphosis, the becoming are highlighted in the artist’s work, also in the use of the combustion effect. In fact her subject matter often appears invaded by a series of burns which denote its fragility, the goal of impermanence. Built on the contrasts between heavy and light, eternal and ephemeral, precious and ordinary, Valeria Vaccaro’s work therefore sets us before the uncertainty of our time.

Dopo aver frequentato il Liceo Artistico, studia scultura presso l’Accademia Albertina di Belle Arti di Torino. Espone regolarmente dal 2005. Tra il 2013 e il 2015 partecipa alla Biennale Itinerante Europea JCE Jeune Création Européenne. Nel 2015 espone a Exihibit a Torino e al Museo d’Arte Contemporanea del Castello di Rivara. Nel 2017, in occasione dell’Art Prize CBM, vince una menzione speciale dalla città di Torino. Nel 2019 inizia la collaborazione con la Galleria PUNTO SULL’ARTE ed espone alla 15° Edizione di ArtVerona.

Vive e lavora a Torino.

After attending the Artistic High School, she studied architecture at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin. She has exhibited regularly since 2005.

Between 2013 and 2015 she participated in the Biennale Itinerante Europea JCE Jeune Création Européenne. In 2015 she exhibited at Exihibit in Turin and at the Rivara Castle Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2017, on the occasion of the Art Prize CBM, she won a special mention from the city of Turin. In 2019 she began the collaboration with the PUNTO SULL’ARTE Gallery and exhibited at the 15th edition of ArtVerona. She lives and works in Turin.
