The meetings and exhibitions industry offers opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, encouraging cooperation and fostering development.

La industria de reuniones y exposiciones ofrece oportunidades de establecer contactos, compartir conocimientos, estimular la cooperación y promover el desarrollo.

Moreover, this industry also promotes tourism destinations and, consequently, it is an important beneficiary of investment and source of employment and revenues.

Asimismo, constituye un factor de impulso de destinos turísticos y, consecuentemente, una importante fuente de inversiones, empleo e ingresos.

The Punta del Este Convention and Exhibition Center is a wonderful testimony of precisely that.

Just a short distance from the downtown area of our region’s main resort, the Center is surrounded by a privileged natural environment; its premises show high architectural quality and functionality and are operated by a qualified and committed team. From the moment the Center was inaugurated in July 2016 until late 2017, it hosted 50 events, received 40,000 visitors and generated 1,600 job opportunities.

El Centro de Convenciones y Exhibiciones de Punta del Este es un formidable testimonio de ello. Ubicado a corta distancia del centro del principal balneario de nuestra región, con un entorno natural privilegiado, instalaciones de alta calidad arquitectónica y funcionalidad y un equipo humano calificado y comprometido, desde su inauguración en julio de 2016 hasta el cierre del año 2017, ha albergado 50 eventos, recibido 40.000 visitantes y generado 1.600 oportunidades laborales.

Despite the Center’s success so far, because of its youth, it still has quite a few challenges to address, and a number of targets have been set in a quest for a better future that is built jointly and on a daily basis.

Como su título lo indica, esta publicación es una Memoria. Pero por ser la memoria de un emprendimiento ya exitoso pero aún muy joven, tiene también una buena dosis de desafíos a encarar y de objetivos a alcanzar hacia un futuro mejor que se construye día a día y entre todos.

I therefore ask you to keep both the center´s success and youth in mind while you read this material that I am honored and pleased to present.

Lo que el Ministerio de Turismo definió como su lineamiento estratégico de trabajo, es hoy también una consigna: Ahora podemos hablar y trabajamos, para un turismo de todo el año, en todo el país, para todas las personas, con una oferta diversificada y sustentable.

El 2017 cerró con la cifra histórica de más de 4 millones de visitantes, indicador que refleja la importancia de esta actividad en la económica del país. El comienzo del 2018 nos augura otro año de éxitos para el sector.

Uruguay se reafirma cada día como un destino con servicios de calidad que ofrece experiencias únicas, llenas de tradición, cultura, innovación y sofisticación. En este sentido, Punta del Este continúa siendo la pieza fundamental en el atractivo nacional.

Con orgullo decimos que el Centro de Convenciones contribuye para que el destino sea visitado durante todo el año; albergando congresos, seminarios y eventos de gran magnitud que posicionan al país como referente en Turismo de Reuniones.

El desarrollo local, la desestacionalización del sector, la apertura a nuevos mercados y el incremento de puestos de trabajo, son algunas de las mejoras que ha brindado esta espectacular infraestructura al emblemático balneario esteño y al Uruguay.

What started as the Ministry’s strategic guidelines is today one of its mottos: Now we can talk of and we work for year-round tourism across the country, for everyone, with a diverse range of sustainable proposals.

2017 closed with the historic figure of more than 4 million visitors, an indicator that reflects the importance of this activity in the country’s economy.

The beginning of 2018 foretells another year of success for the sector.

Uruguay is constantly reaffirming its positon as a destination with quality services that offers unique experiences, rich tradition and culture, innovation and sophistication. In this sense, Punta del Este continues to be the cornerstone of tourist attractions in Uruguay.

We are proud to say that the Convention Center is one of the reasons why visitors come to Punta del Este all year round; hence, by hosting congresses, seminars and large-scale events we contribute to positioning the country as a leading player in the Meetings Tourism.

Local development, deseasonalization of the sector, the opening to new markets and more jobs are but a few of the contributions that this spectacular infrastructure has provided to the emblematic seaside resort and to Uruguay as a whole.

El Centro de Convenciones y Exhibiciones de Punta del Este representa la concreción de un proyecto de participación público-privada, que llevó más de 15 años en ser la realidad que representa hoy.

El turismo de reuniones y exhibiciones es una de las áreas que estamos consolidando como región, como país, y ahora también como departamento.

Los logros son tangibles, y esto es gracias al continuo y consciente trabajo de los sectores público y privado, con un objetivo común.

The Punta del Este Convention and Exhibition Center is the result of a public-private partnership project; the idea was 15 years in the making, until it finally turned into the Center we have today.

The meetings and exhibitions tourism is one of the areas we are consolidating as a region, as a country, and now also as a department (Maldonado). The achievements are tangible thanks to the continuous and conscious work of the public and private sectors, who work in pursuance of a common objective.

El Centro tiene una importancia determinante en este punto para el departamento, ya que fue construido con el objetivo de convertirse en el principal receptor de eventos y grandes reuniones de la región. Punta del Este no contaba con un espacio para recibir un gran número de delegados, con la infraestructura, calidad y estándares internacionales que tenemos con este emprendimiento.

El hecho de que desde hace casi dos años Maldonado cuente con un Centro de Convenciones de la talla mundial es decisivo para nuestro departamento y para todo el Uruguay.

The Center plays a key role in the department, since it was built with the aim of becoming the main recipient of events and large meetings in the region.

Before its construction, Punta del Este had no venues suitable for a large number of delegates, with the infrastructure, quality and international standards the Center offers today.

Desde la Dirección de Turismo de Maldonado, procuramos captar cada vez más eventos del segmento MICE, y el Centro de Convenciones y Exhibiciones es una herramienta fundamental para lograr este objetivo.

From the Directorate of Tourism of Maldonado, we try to attract more and more events of the MICE segment, and the Convention and Exhibition Center is a key tool to that aim.

Este es el motivo por el que la Intendencia de Maldonado ha acompañado al Centro de Convenciones, desde su impactante inauguración con los Premios Platino y estamos seguros que llegarán nuevos.

That is why the Municipality of Maldonado has accompanied the Convention Center since its impressive inauguration with the Platino Awards and we are sure that many of such events are to come.

The two-year existence of this Convention Center in Maldonado has become decisive for our department and for all of Uruguay.

Nos complace ver los números de esta primera memoria comercial, que muestra que el trabajo realizado ha ido por las líneas acertadas, y vemos también que estos logros colaboran con nuestro clásico objetivo, de romper la estacionalidad.

We are pleased to see the figures of this first business report, since they show that the work done has gone in the right direction, and we also see that these achievements support our classic objective, i.e., to break seasonality.

Un destino exclusivo, con la trascendencia y exposición internacional que tiene Punta del Este, ameritaba tener un Centro de Convenciones a nivel internacional, como el del que hoy tiene. Un Centro de Convenciones que nos ayuda y colabora a cortar con la estacionalidad del destino, con eventos de primer nivel, y sobre todo, en sintonía en el trabajo mancomunado entre la comunidad y el Municipio de Punta del Este para hacer eventos en conjunto.

Creemos firmemente que los eventos son el motor del invierno de Punta del Este, evidentemente tenemos muchos durante el verano, pero trabajando en conjunto con la gente del Centro de Convenciones habrá cada vez más a lo largo de todo el año, potenciando así a un destino con una excelente infraestructura (de alojamiento, gastronomía, y servicios) que está y que tenemos que usar.

An exclusive destination, as important and internationally exposed as Punta del Este, deserved to have an International Convention Center like the one we have today. The Convention Center helps us do away with the seasonality of the destination by hosting top-level events year round, and above all, it enables us all to work jointly - both the community and the Municipality of Punta del Este - to organize events together.

We firmly believe that events are Punta del Este’s driving force; sure enough, many events are organized in the summer, but by working together with the people of the Convention Center we will be able to have more and more throughout the rest of the year as well, thus enhancing a destination blessed with an excellent infrastructure (hospitality, cuisine, and other services) that is already available and that needs to be used.

Because of all this we welcome this Convention Center; it will enable us to host more events, for a better future for Punta del Este.

The Center gives prestige to the resort, but the reverse is also true: Punta del Este gives prestige to the Convention Center. Many things have already been done; initially we

Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center es el mayor proyecto de inversión público-privada en el sector turístico de nuestro país de los últimos 50 años. Concebido con el objetivo de desarrollar en Punta del Este y la región el segmento de turismo MICE, y ayudar así a la desestacionalización del destino, la concepción de este emprendimiento surge de la real necesidad de toda la región y del país, de contar con un Centro de Convenciones y Exhibiciones de estándares internacionales e infraestructura de primer nivel, que permitiera la realización de cualquier tipo de eventos.

Hoy, luego de 18 meses de nuestra apertura con los Premios Platino del Cine Iberoamericano, y con ya un año y medio de puertas abiertas, es que con gran orgullo presentamos nuestra primera memoria comercial, como forma acercar a los stakeholders de este gran proyecto (hoy realidad) la información actualizada del trabajo realizado y los objetivos cumplidos.

Esta realidad, que hoy presentamos, pudo plasmarse luego de más de una década de trabajo, una obra de dos años de duración, una inversión que supera los U$S 35.000.000, y el trabajo de nuestra empresa que comenzó en octubre de 2014, acompañó el desarrollo de la obra y continúa al día de hoy.

Nuestra empresa tomó este desafío y se comprometió a trabajar, sobre la base del plan presentado, en un proceso en el cual se definió una primera etapa (de tres a cinco años de duración) para instaurar y afianzar el centro a nivel nacional, regional e internacional.

The Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center is the largest public-private investment project in the tourism sector developed in our country in 50 years.

The whole venture was conceived with the objective of developing the MICE tourism segment in Punta del Este and the region, in an effort to deseasonalize the destination; it arises from the real need of the entire region and the country to have a Convention and Exhibition Center that meets international standards and top-level infrastructure suitable for all sorts of events.

Today, 18 months following the inauguration with the Platino Awards for the best Ibero-American Films and having operated for a year and a half, it is with great pride that we present our first Business Report, as a way to provide the stakeholders of this great project (today a reality) with updated information of the work that has been completed and the targets met.

The current achievements reflect more than a decade of work; it took two years and an investment exceeding USD 35,000,000 to build the facilities.

Our company started this project in October 2014; we were there at all the stages of the construction, and we continue to work for it today.

Our company accepted this challenge and committed to work on the basis of the plan presented, having defined an initial (three- to five-year) stage to establish and to strengthen the center at the national, regional and international levels.

Durante este tiempo, realizamos numerosas acciones, tendientes, primero, a lograr una apertura con eventos de primer nivel, y luego a generar una agenda permanente de eventos, que hoy presentamos en esta primera Memoria Comercial. Con el sentimiento del objetivo cumplido es que podemos decir que desde nuestra apertura (el 24 de julio de 2016) hasta el cierre del año 2017, hemos recibido 40.000 visitantes, realizado 50 eventos, generado 1.600 oportunidades de trabajo, con una ocupación total de 798.093 metros cuadrados.

Many things have already been done; initially we worked to open with top-level events, and then to generate a permanent agenda, which we present today in this first Business Report. We feel we have accomplished our goal, as since our opening (July 24, 2016) until the end of 2017, we have received 40,000 visitors at 50 events; we generated 1,600 job opportunities, with a total occupancy of 798,093 square meters.

En nombre de los miembros de AIPC, la Asociación Internacional de Centros de Convenciones, me gustaría felicitar al Centro de Convenciones y Exhibiciones de Punta del Este por las perspectivas de un éxito aún mayor en el futuro.

Las ventajas que una instalación como el Centro de Convenciones y Exhibiciones de Punta del Este puede traer a un destino como Punta del Este ya están claras. Es un medio eficaz para generar un tráfico de visitantes valioso que utilizará la oferta de alojamiento y servicios en este destino tan atractivo fuera de temporada, cuando otros tipos de visitantes pueden no ser tan abundantes. Al mismo tiempo, es un instrumento importante para elevar el perfil de Punta del Este entre un público diferente y generalmente influyente.

On behalf of the members of AIPC, the International Association of Convention Centres, I would like to congratulate and compliment the Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center on a very successful first year of operation and the prospects for even greater success in the future.

The advantages that a facility like the Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center can bring to a destination like Punta del Este are already clear. It is an effective means of generating valuable visitor traffic that will utilize the available supply of accommodation and services in this very attractive destination in the off-season when other types of visitors may not be as abundant. At the same time, it is an important device for raising Punta del Este’s profile amongst a different and generally influential audience.

Durante el 2017 el turismo de reuniones y eventos continuó su acelerado crecimiento en toda la región, con una importante cantidad de nuevos eventos que han llegado a nuestro continente de la mano de un trabajo muy profesional de innumerables destinos que hoy han invertido en este sentido. En la última década esta ha sido una característica de nuestra región, que ha encontrado en el turismo de reuniones y eventos una gran oportunidad de negocios.

During 2017 the meetings and events tourism kept on growing at an accelerated pace throughout the Latin American region, as we received a significant number of new events that landed here thanks to the very professional work of many destinations that invested for that to happen. In the last decade this has been an outstanding feature in our region, which has discovered great business opportunities in the meetings and events industry.

Nuestro sector ha duplicado el número de eventos a nivel internacional en la última década, de acuerdo a ICCA (Asociación Internacional de Congresos y Convenciones), generando récords históricos de reuniones. Esta es una clara muestra que la tendencia de crecimiento no se detiene y esta realidad también se manifiesta en la región latinoamericana.

En este contexto regional de cambios y nuevos desafíos, Punta del Este fue pionero en la idea de construir su centro de convenciones y predio ferial, logrando la consolidación final y apertura en el año 2016, con la firme convicción que su apertura lograría romper la estacionalidad marcada de su oferta y generaría nuevas oportunidades de negocios para todo el departamento de Maldonado y Uruguay como destino.

According to ICCA (the International Congress and Convention Association) statistics, our sector has doubled the number of international events in the last decade, generating historic records of meetings.

This is a clear proof that the growth trend does not stop, a phenomenon that is clearly manifest in the Latin American region, too.

In this regional context of changes and new challenges, Punta del Este pioneered the idea of building its convention center and fairground, finally opening it in 2016, with the firm conviction that by opening it the resort would put an end to its marked seasonality and create new business opportunities for the entire department of Maldonado and for Uruguay as a destination.

Cumplimos ya un año y medio de gestión y sin lugar a dudas, el Centro de Convenciones de Punta del Este desde el primer día ha generado nuevos ingresos para la economía local, mayor ocupación hotelera fuera de la alta estación, infinidad de nuevas oportunidades laborales a través de pequeñas y medianas empresas de servicios, captación de reuniones y eventos que antes no eran posibles de albergar, un marketing de destino con captación de eventos de alta difusión mediática internacional y una profesionalización de los servicios especializados para este sector que hoy es el más rentable del mix de la oferta turística mundial.

Desde el primer día de apertura con los Premios Platino y continuando con una serie de exitosos congresos y eventos, ya son miles los participantes que han llegado a Punta del Este de nuestra mano y la agenda futura es muy auspiciosa.

there is no doubt that from its first day, the Punta del Este Convention Center has generated new revenues for the local economy, higher off-season hotel occupancy rates, and multiple new job opportunities through small and medium-sized service enterprises. It enabled us to get meetings and events that we were unable to host in the past, developing a destination marketing that helped us capture events with high international media coverage. It also contributed to the professionalization of specialized services for this sector that is currently the most profitable of the global tourism mix.

Since the very first day when we opened with the Platino Awards, which was followed by a number of successful congresses and events, thousands of participants have already come to Punta del Este because of the events we host, and the forthcoming agenda is very auspicious. Our commitment is and will continue to be to position Punta del Este and Uruguay as a meetings and events venue, with the Convention Center as a key strategic pillar for the development of this destination.

Desde que iniciamos nuestra actividad, un año y medio antes de la apertura del Centro, nos trazamos objetivos reales y concretos, junto con un plan de trabajo para llegar a los mismos. Comenzamos con un Centro en obra y un segmento de mercado a desarrollar, y con este desafío planificamos una serie de acciones locales, regionales e internacionales, que nos permitieron dar a conocer el Centro y llegar a la apertura con una primera agenda de eventos ya confirmados.

Since we began our activity a year and a half before opening the Center, we set real and concrete targets, along with a work plan that would help us achieve them. We started when the premises were still under construction, at a time when the market segment was still to be developed. In view of the challenge, we planned a number of local, regional and international actions to raise awareness about the Center, as a first step to attracting events that would enable us to reach the opening date with an agenda of confirmed contracts.

Este plan de trabajo incluyó aspectos como: brindar apoyo y soporte a la captación de eventos (habiendo colaborado con 16 asociaciones y organizaciones), participación en ferias especializadas (11 participaciones en ciudades como San Pablo, Frankfurt, Lima, Barcelona, Buenos Aires y Santiago de Chile), la vinculación con las principales entidades del sector (fuimos aceptados por ICCA y AIPC y concurrimos a sus principales eventos en Buenos Aires, Natal, Punta Cana, Panamá, Barcelona, Sarawak y Praga), organización de visitas de inspección primero a la obra y luego al Centro (con más de 30 visitas recibidas), presentaciones y eventos de promoción en el exterior (destacando las realizadas en Buenos Aires, San Pablo, Porto Alegre, Lima, Milán, Asunción y Madrid), y un trabajo directo con más de 400 contactos locales.

La Asociación Mundial de Congresos y Convenciones (ICCA) realiza anualmente estadísticas de los congresos que reciben las diferentes ciudades, países y regiones. Punta del Este tiene en sus registros recientes (2012-2016) un máximo de 13 congresos realizados y 12 en el caso de 2016.

Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center fue en 2017 la sede elegida por 8 congresos que cumplen con los estándares de ICCA, marcando así la pauta del camino que estamos recorriendo.

Uno de los objetivos por el que fue construído este Centro es generar turismo durante todo el año en Punta del Este, generar trabajo para Maldonado, y contribuir al posicionamiento del destino y el país en el segmento MICE. Estamos recorriendo el camino que nos marcamos allá por 2013 (cuando nos presentamos a la licitación) y los números de 2017 marcan que estamos en la línea de lo que nos propusimos hacer.

Por todo, esto digo que tenemos la satisfacción del objetivo cumplido y la responsabilidad de que aún nos queda mucho trabajo por hacer.

unprecedented in Uruguay, and we succeeded by opening with the Platino Awards for the best Ibero-American Films, of all events. We completed our first full year of operations (2017), always working hard to meet our objectives; hence, we managed not only to meet our goals as to the number of events, but even to exceed the turnover targets and the number of type I weeks committed.

The International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) keeps track of the annual statistics of the congresses held in the various cities, countries and regions. Between 2012 and 2016, the maximum number of congresses organized in Punta del Este annually was 13; in 2016 there were 12. In 2017, the Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center alone was the venue chosen by eight congresses that met ICCA’s standards, which shows we are succeeding in increasing the capture of events for the city.

One of the objectives for building this Center was to attract tourism year round in Punta del Este, to provide jobs to the people in Maldonado, and to contribute to positioning the destination and the country in the MICE segment. We are following the path we had set in 2013 (when we tendered for the contract) and the 2017 figures show that we are in the right path.

It is because of the above that we are happy about the objectives accomplished, and aware of the responsibility for the many things still to be done.

China is our main trading partner, so organizing this event in Uruguay, and specifically here, on the Atlantic coast, was a real challenge; Uruguay has positioned itself as a responsible country, capable of organizing this type of events. Convocamos en esta edición, a más de 1500 personas de 21 países y llegaron disertantes de más de 14 destinos, entre ellos Argentina, Ucrania, Rusia, Estados Unidos, Alemania, Francia, Brasil Chile, Colombia, Perú, España, Finlandia, Australia, y por supuesto de Uruguay.

“This congress is the most important event in the area of Fitness and Sports Medicine in the Spanish speaking world.”

In this edition, we convened more than 1,500 people from 21 countries and speakers from over 14 places, including Argentina, Ukraine, Russia, United States, Germany, France, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Spain, Finland, Australia, and of course Uruguay.

This was our fifth edition, and we needed a facility with the potential of generating a large space, with the level of infrastructure and equipment required for the congress; that’s why we decided to do it at the Convention Center. “Este Arte” is an international exhibit of contemporary art that gathers 30 national and international art galleries.

The project was started with the aim of contributing to the Uruguayan culture and with the idea of establishing a dialogue between national and international artists, as well as between our local art galleries and galleries abroad. We have been working for several years; we feel we tend to be always one step ahead of what happens in Uruguay. We organized a couple of editions in several places before, but in our third edition we chose the Convention Center. We knew that this was the right place. “Durante los días 19 a 21 de enero de 2017 se llevó acabo la 30º tercera semana internacional del caballo árabe en Punta del Este. En esta oportunidad la SSCACU celebró un convenio con el Centro de Convenciones y Exposiciones de Punta del Este, quienes en forma conjunta organizaron el evento.

Desde el punto de vista de la infraestructura supera todas las expectativas amplia pista de arena totalmente vallada la que hubo que desarmar y volver a armar dos días antes del show tribunas para 250 personas, 30 mesas VIP, boxes bajo techo con todas las comodidades para los caballos, agua, energía eléctrica, vestuarios para todos los cabañeros, entre otras cosas, y no faltó nada en lugar. Nuestras salas, con capacidad para más de 4.000 delegados, sumadas al pabellón de exhibiciones con 6.700 m2 y los 60.000 m2 de espacio abierto, ofrecen posibilidades que antes no existían en nuestro país.

4.2 Nuestros espacios Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center fue concebido como un espacio multipropósito, con un diseño que abarca dos edificios independientes, pero al mismo tiempo integrados. Ambos, el Centro de Convenciones y el Pabellón de Exhibiciones, pueden funcionar separadamente en eventos diferentes, o bien, conjuntamente, complementando todos sus espacios para eventos de mayor exigencia y necesidades.

Esta versatilidad se logra a través del diseño, distribución y equipamiento de todas sus salas y espacios, que se adaptan a la necesidad y características de los más diversos eventos.

Nuestro complejo es ideal para congresos, exhibiciones, exposiciones, shows y eventos de entretenimiento en general, encuentros deportivos, reuniones corporativas y sociales.

4.2 Our spaces The Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center was conceived as a multipurpose space; it is designed as two independent but integrated buildings. Both the Convention Center and the Exhibition Pavilion can operate separately in different events, or, jointly, complementing all their spaces for more demanding events that require larger areas.

This versatility is achieved through the design, the layout and equipment of all its rooms and spaces, which can be adapted to the needs and characteristics of the most diverse events.

Our complex is ideal for congresses, exhibitions, trade shows, shows and entertainment events in general, including sporting events, as well as corporate and social meetings.

The size of our multifunctional spaces ranges from 30 to 5,605 square meters, adding in total 11,005 square meters, which gives un an unparalleled capacity to host events like no other venue in the country.

This enables us to guarantee a top level audiovisual service that meets the highest demands of the first world congresses and shows.

CONGRESS RENTAL® provides services supported by the experience, skills and training of its technical staff throughout the entire process of assembling the equipment prior to an event and seeing to its performance during the event.

Congress Rental has become the trend-setting company in the audiovisual business and is recognized for the top quality services it provides, through which each event becomes a unique experience, while providing full support to the organizers. El Mercado, Boca Chica Puerto, Boca Chica Carnes Asadas, y los restaurantes Al Mar y Asiana (ubicados dentro del Serena Hotel), forman parte de la oferta gastronómica que este grupo brinda en Punta del Este, a las que se suman los servicios para eventos dentro y fuera de sus instalaciones propias.

Sus establecimientos dan trabajo en forma directa en Maldonado durante la temporada estival a más de 200 personas, contando con una plantilla permanente durante todo el año de más de 75 personas. Además, sus proveedores de suministros son también locales de Maldonado.

ICCA - International Congress and Convention Association ICCA is a non-profit commercial association whose main purpose is to be the global congress organization community that enables its members to acquire and maintain a significant competitive advantage. It has almost 1,000 members spread across about 90 countries globally. Punta del Este CEC was a ICCA member even before the Convention Center opened, because of what this association stands for. AIPC - Asociación Internacional de Palacios de Congresos Reúne a los principales profesionales y responsables de los centros congresuales de todo el mundo. Somos el único Centro de Convenciones de Uruguay miembro de AIPC, y uno de los pocos de la región, habiendo sido elegidos además como sede del primer Summit Latinoamérica de la asociación.

AIPC - International Congress Centers Association This Association brings together the main professionals and managers of the congress centers around the world. We are the only Convention Center of Uruguay member of AIPC, and one of the few in the region, having also been chosen as the venue for the first Latin American Summit organized by the Association.

2016 Tras la apertura en el mes de julio con la III edición de los Premios Platino del Cine Iberoamericano, 2016 cerró con un total de 14 eventos, 344.547 m2 ocupados, 7.890 visitantes y 746 oportunidades laborales generadas, marcando así el inicio de las actividades del Centro.

After opening the Center in July with the 3rd edition of the Platino Awards to the best Ibero-American Films, 2016 closed with a total of 14 events, 344,547 m2 occupied, 7,890 visitors and the creation 746 job opportunities, hence marking the beginning of the Center’s activities.

El mayor encuentro del cine iberoamericano fue el evento inaugural de Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center, que reunió directores, intérpretes y otras personalidades de la industria cinematográfica de los 23 países de Iberoamérica premiando su labor en las diversas categorías.

Promovidos por EGEDA, con la colaboración de FIPCA, las Academias de Cine, Latin Artist y los Institutos de cine, los Premios Platino del Cine Iberoamericano se han convertido en el gran evento de promoción internacional del cine. A la edición 2016 llegaron más de 200 medios acreditados, con una gran repercusión en la prensa internacional, retransmitido a más de 60 países.

Una gran alfombra roja recibió a más 200 celebridades del mundo del cine y la cultura en general.

The Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center was inaugurated with the largest gathering of the Latin American Film Industry, which brought together directors, performers and other personalities of the film industry from the 23 countries of Ibero America, to reward their work in the various categories. Promoted by EGEDA, with the collaboration of FIPCA, the Film Academies, Latin Artist and the Film Institutes, the Platino Awards for the best Ibero-American Films have become the great event for the international promotion of cinema. More than 200 accredited media came to the 2016 edition, and the event had great impact as reflected by the international press, being broadcast to more than 60 countries. A large red carpet welcomed more than 200 celebrities related to the movies industry and to culture in general.

El Torneo Panamericano de Songahm Taekwondo 2016, fue el mayor evento anual de Songahm Taekwondo de América Latina. Participaron representantes de todas las escuelas afiliadas de América Latina, y estuvieron presentes maestros de la casa central de ATA y de los países miembros de Songahm.

Los luchadores compitieron con Armas Tradicionales, Fórmulas de ATA-XTreme, Combat Weapons Sparring, e IMAS (Luchas del Sistema Integrado de Artes Marciales).

Además de las competencias individuales, durante el Panamericano se realizó también la tradicional competencia por equipos. Durante las jornadas del campeonato se dictaron diversos seminarios dictados por maestros 6° y 7° danes de diferentes partes del mundo.

The 2016 Pan American Songahm Taekwondo Championship was the largest Songahm Taekwondo annual event in Latin America. The attendees included participants representing all the affiliated schools in Latin America, and teachers from the American Taekwondo Association headquarters and Sonham member countries. The wrestlers competed with Traditional Weapons, ATA-XTreme Formulas, Combat Weapons Sparring, and IMAS (Integrated Martial Arts System).

In addition to the individual competitions, the Pan American tournament also included the traditional team competition. During the tournament there were several seminars given by 6th and 7th belt instructors from different parts of the world.

The V International Fitness Congress and V International Sports Medicine Symposium convened outstanding world renowned experts. Physical trainers and sports doctors of around the globe shared their latest studies and scientific breakthroughs in the training of international élite athletes and sportspersons, as well as the most advanced techniques for the treatment of injuries of any kind. Attendees had a chance to listen to the most outstanding high-performance sport professionals, with experience in Olympic Games and World Cups of a number of sports, including soccer, basketball, rugby and handball, to name a few. Professionals and experts from America and Europe met in Punta del Este at this international event, which was endorsed by the National Sports Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministries of Tourism, Education and the Interior, and the municipalities of Maldonado and Montevideo, as well as government agencies and companies related to training, physical fitness and sports in general.

En el marco de las acciones para el desarrollo y promoción del turismo de cruceros y fomento del turismo náutico fluvial que realiza en Uruguay, se organizó el IV Encuentro Regional de Cruceros y Turismo Náutico Fluvial, organizado en conjunto por el Ministerio de Turismo, la Administración Nacional de Puertos, la Dirección Nacional de Hidrografía, y las Intendencias de Colonia, Maldonado y Montevideo. Una instancia de intercambio de experiencias sobre iniciativas para el desarrollo de un sector turístico seguro, sostenible y más competitivo en las Américas. Se realizaron ponencias sobre las tendencias y últimos desarrollos del sector, así como intercambio de opiniones que contribuyen al desarrollo del mercado, su oferta, infraestructura y logística. Se contó con la presencia de las máximas autoridades nacionales, destacados especialistas y operadores del sector de Uruguay y del exterior.

On October 27 and 28 Punta del Este received the authorities of Tourism, Ports, Shipowners and Tourism Operators, to assess the possibility of offering services aimed to increasing the cruiser activity in the region.

As part of the actions designed for the development and promotion of cruise tourism and the fluvial nautical tourism in Uruguay, the stakeholders gathered at the IV Regional Meeting on Cruises and Fluvial Nautical Tourism, which was jointly organized by the Ministry of Tourism, the National Port Administration, the National Directorate for the Waterways, and the Municipalities of Colonia, Maldonado and Montevideo.

The meeting gave participants an opportunity to exchange experiences on initiatives intended to develop a safe, sustainable and more competitive tourism industry in the Americas. There were presentations on the trends and latest developments in the sector, as well as an exchange of opinions that contribute to the development of this market, what it offers, its infrastructure and logistics. It was attended by the highest national authorities, opinion leaders, experts and local and foreign operators.

El 67° Congreso Uruguayo de Cirugía, se desarrolló conjuntamente con las XXVII Jornadas de Residentes, XXVI Jornadas Integradas de Enfermería Quirúrgica y las VI Jornadas Germano Uruguayas de Cirugía. La impronta del mismo tuvo un enfoque a situaciones que puedan sorprendernos en nuestra actividad asistencial, con destacados profesionales coordinaron las mesas redondas y conferencias cuyos ejes centrales respondan la pregunta: ¿y ahora qué? Como todos los años, el principal objetivo fue promover actividades cuyo propósito es el intercambio de conocimientos con expertos nacionales e internacionales. El evento fue declarado de Interés Departamental por la Intendencia de Maldonado y de Interés Ministerial por el Ministerio de Salud Pública y el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores.

The 67th Uruguayan Surgery Congress, was organized together with the XXVII Residents’ Conference, the XXVI Integrated Surgical Nursing Meeting and the VI German-Uruguayan Surgery Meeting. The activities were especially focused on challenging situations, with prominent professionals that coordinated the round tables and conferences, centered on the question: “And now what? As every year, the primary objective was to promote activities that encourage knowledge sharing and exchange of views among national and international experts. The event was declared of Department Interest by the Municipality of Maldonado and of Ministerial Interest by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Cerca de 30 galerías de arte contemporáneo y emergente desplegaron sus propuestas, entre ellas, las mejores galerías uruguayas y a una selección de las más reconocidas del mundo. Paralelamente, a la muestra, el público pudo acceder a una serie de actividades culturales como tertulias, charlas, mesas redondas y espectáculos de música.

After the two successful previous editions, Este Arte chose the infrastructure of the Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center as the framework for its third edition. About 30 galleries of contemporary and emerging art were included in the display, including the best Uruguayan galleries and a selection of some of the best known galleries in the world. During the exhibition, the public had a chance to attend a number of cultural activities such as gatherings, talks, round tables and music shows.

La 33ª edición de la Semana Internacional del Caballo Árabe contó con la participación de 45 animales, de 10 haras; en el halter fueron 24 reproductores. Los jueces fueron: el estadounidense Richard Petty, un profesional muy reconocido internacionalmente, que calificó en Estados Unidos, Brasil y Francia; y dos jueces brasileños también de gran prestigio, Nelson Moreira y Caio Moreira. La actividad comenzó el miércoles 18 con el ingreso de animales, previa inspección veterinaria, actividad. El jueves a la hora 18 se desarrollaron pruebas funcionales, la prueba de árabes al natural, la Breeder´s & Premium Cup y la calificación de categorías. El viernes 20 continuaron las calificaciones hasta la definición de los campeonatos; y la prueba Árabes en Libertad. Y el sábado desde la hora 19, la gala de caballos árabes, la entrega de premios, el remate y una cena con música.

The 33rd edition of the International Arabian Horse Week gathered 45 animals from 10 studs and 24 sires in the halter. The judges were: Richard Petty (USA), an internationally renowned professional, with qualifications in the United States, Brazil and France; and two also highly prestigious Brazilian judges, Nelson Moreira and Caio Moreira. The activity began on Wednesday 18 with the animals’ arrival following their veterinary inspection. The functional tests were conducted at 6 pm on Thursday 19, including the unadorned Arabian horses, the Arabian Breeders’s Cup and Premium Cup and the category rating. On Friday 20 the gradings proceeded with the results of the championships and the free horse performance. Finally, the event concluded on Saturday 21 at 7 pm, with the Arabian horse show, the awards ceremony, auction and dinner.

Por primera vez en Uruguay se realizó una exhibición de Motocross Free Style. Con la presencia de pilotos europeos, rankeados entre los mejores del Mundo en la categoría FMX (Motocross Free Style), cuatro de ellos medallistas en los “X Games”, se desplegó un espectáculo sin precedentes, cargado de adrenalina, acrobacias, saltos, luces y show de fuegos. La puesta en escena se desarrolló de acuerdo a los estándares internacionales requeridos paraeste tipo de exhibición en cuanto a la espectacularidad, seguridad y rampas adaptadas a la categoría para que pueda disfrutar toda la familia. Entre las actividades programadas se destacó la “Moto-Terapia”, una técnica utilizada en Europa que ayuda a fortalecer la autoestima, mejorar los vínculos y fomentar los pensamientos y emociones positivos. La “Moto-Terapia” en el Centro de Convenciones de Punta del Este se desarrolló con chicos de Teletón y Cerema.

An exhibition of Motocross Free Style was held for the first time in Uruguay, on the premises of the Punta del Este Convention and Exhibition Center. The unprecedented show displayed was full of adrenaline, acrobatics, jumps, lights and fire shows. Among the participants were several European pilots, ranked among the best in the world in the FMX (Motocross Free Style) category, and four of them “X Games” medalists. The staging was laid in accordance with the international standards required for this type of exhibition in terms of spectacularity, safety and category-adapted ramps for the whole family to enjoy. One of the activities to be highlighted was the “Moto-Therapy”, a technique used in Europe to boost self-esteem, improve links and encourage positive thoughts and emotions. The “Moto-Therapy” activity at the Punta del Este Convention Center was attended by children receiving rehabilitation therapy at Teletón and Cerema.

COCAL 2017, desarrollado por la Federación de Entidades Organizadoras de Congresos y Afines de América Latina, reunió nuevamente a expertos y representantes en materia de eventos de los 16 países que forman parte de esta asociación. Por espacio de tres días los agremiados e interesados compartieron conocimientos y se estableció un ambiente idóneo para fomentar el networking, así como integraciones comerciales a través de las distintas rondas de negocios que se desarrollarán en el marco de COCAL 2017. Veinte expertos abordaron temas como el impacto que tienen los eventos en los destinos, la neurociencia en los eventos, fuerzas disrruptivas que intervienen en las reuniones, entre muchas otras temáticas que sin lugar a dudas conciernen hoy por hoy al gremio.

The city of Punta del Este in Uruguay was the destination selected to host the 34th edition of the COCAL Congress, the great Latin American meeting that convenes the professionals of the Meetings Industry. COCAL 2017 was organized by the Confederation of Latin American Congress Organizing Entities and Related Activities, gathering experts and representatives in the field of events from the 16 countries that are part of this association. For three days, the members of the organization and other actors shared their knowledge in an networking-friendly atmosphere, promoting business integration through the various business rounds under the framework of COCAL 2017. Twenty experts addressed issues such as impact that events have on destinations, neuroscience of events and disruptive forces that act in meetings, to mention but some of the many topics of interest to the industry today.

Punta del Este CEC hosted the only event that brings together the most important Convention Centers in Latin America and the Caribbean. The international event ACCCLATAM 2017 addressed several thematic axes, including innovation, and analyzed success stories and failures, integration with the community and sense of belonging in both the public and private sectors, public and private support to the convention centers, features of future customers and quality certifications in the entire service chain of a destination.

Durante la LIV Asamblea General, fueron presentados informes de actividades de la ODEPA, así como, de los Programas de Solidaridad Olímpica y Solidaridad Panamericana para el cuadrienio 2017 – 2020.Asimismo, los Comités Organizadores de los Juegos Panamericanos “Lima 2019”, de los Juegos Olímpicos de la Juventud “Buenos Aires 2018” y de los Juegos Olímpicos “Tokio 2020” presentaron información actualizada sobre los avances alcanzados.

The LIV General Ordinary Assembly of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) was held at the Convention Center in Punta del Este; it brought together representatives of the 41 National Olympic Committees members of PASO and the Presidents of the Pan American and World Olympic Sports Confederations. During the LIV General Assembly, PASO presented the reports of its activities, as well as the Olympic Solidarity and Pan American Solidarity Programs for the 2017-2020 period. In addition, the Organizing Committees of the “Lima 2019” Pan American Games, of the “Buenos Aires 2018” Youth Olympic Games and the “Tokyo 2020” Olympic Games presented updated information on the progress made.

El peleador del momento, el argentino César Miguel “La Joya” Barrionuevo, se enfrentó al olímpico Alberto “Beto” Palmetta. El evento contó además con la participación del referente del boxeo uruguayo Andrés “Pitufo” Viera, entre otros talentos de la región, con combates de alto nivel internacional. La gala fue televisada por TyC Sports (Argentina, América Latina y Estados Unidos) y VTV (Uruguay), y contó con el apoyo de la Intendencia de Maldonado.

Given the success of the first Boxing Gala, its producers selected the Punta del Este CEC again for a new International Boxing event. The most popular Argentine boxer at the time - Cesar Miguel “La Joya” Barrionuevo - faced Olympic boxer Alberto “Beto” Palmetta. In addition to those stars, the event featured Uruguayan boxer Andrés “Pitufo” Viera and other regional talents, with international level fights. The gala was broadcast by TyC Sports (Argentina, Latin America and the United States) and VTV (Uruguay), and received the support of the Municipality of Maldonado.

Del 1º al 9 de julio nuestro predio ferial, se convirtió en un Parque de Diversiones con juegos inflables de hasta 14 metros de altura. En un ambiente climatizado, niños y adolescentes optaron entre distintos juegos como: la montaña rusa, mini estadio, la casa del terror y King Kong, entre otras propuestas muy divertidas. Un rincón especial brindó atención y actividades lúdicas y artísticas, como también juegos aptos para los más pequeños. Los adultos acompañantes también contaron con espacios pensados para que su espera sea confortable y con ingreso sin cargo todos los días.

From July 1 to 9 our fairgrounds turned into an amusement park with inflatable games up to 14 meters tall.

In our air-conditioned facilities, children and teenagers could pick from a number of games, such as: the roller coaster, ministadium, the house of horrors and King Kong. A special corner was put together to receive the children, offering games and artistic activities for the little ones. The adults that brought the children had to pay no tickets and could wait for them comfortably every day.

Del 17 al 20 de septiembre se desarrolló en Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center, el XXIII Congreso Latinoamericano de Bioquímica Clínica, organizado por la Asociación Bioquímica Uruguaya. Asistieron al congreso delegados provenientes de 21 países, quienes, junto a acompañantes e integrantes de la organización, sumaron unas 800 personas que arribaron a la ciudad. El evento contó con más de 30 oradores provenientes de Argentina, Brasil, España, México, Portugal, Noruega, Cuba, Guatemala, EEUU, y Paraguay, así como delegados de Uruguay y toda Latinoamérica, quienes tomaron un promedio de 3 noches en diferentes hoteles de Punta del Este. Aún, con la nutrida agenda de actividades del programa, varios delegados encontraron el momento para realizar recorridas por la zona. Novo Turismo, la agencia de turismo elegida por la organización, realizó más de 60 tours, siendo el clásico Tour de Punta del Este el más elegido entre las opciones disponibles.

The Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center hosted the XXIII Latin American Congress of Clinical Biochemistry, organized by the Uruguayan Biochemistry Association from September 17 to 20.

The conference was attended by delegates from 21 countries, who, along with the accompanying persons and members of the organization, added up to about 800 people that visited the city because of the event. There were more than 30 speakers from Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Norway, Cuba, Guatemala, USA, and Paraguay, as well as delegates from Uruguay and across Latin America, who stayed 3 nights as an average in different local hotels. Despite their busy agenda, several delegates found enough time to move around the area. Novo Turismo, the tourism agency chosen by the organization, put together more than 60 tours; the classic Punta del Este Tour was the favorite tour picked by most visitors.

The XXXII Pan American UAV Congress held in 2017 was organized by the Uruguayan Association of Auctioneers, Appraisers and Realtors, and the Pan American Union of Valuers Associations (UPAV) and was declared of National Interest by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, of interest for tourism by the Ministry of Tourism of Uruguay and of interest for the department by the Municipality of Maldonado. Speakers from Uruguay, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil gathered for the occasion.

La Asociación Cardiológica del Uruguay eligió Punta del Este para la realización de su congreso, que tuvo lugar en paralelo con el 3er. Simposio conjunto SUC-Sociedad Española de Cardiología (SEC), 2º Simposio conjunto SUC-American College of Cardiology (ACC), las 8as. Jornadas Rioplatenses de Cardiólogos en Formación CCFUR SUC-CONAREC, las XVIII Jornadas de Enfermería en Cardiología y el XXIV Encuentro de Neumocardiología. Con espíritu renovador, la organización optó por sustituir el papel por el medio digital, así como modificar sustancialmente el mecanismo de envío de Trabajos Libres haciéndolo más simple y moderno. Unos meses antes del congreso, todos los asistentes tuvieron la oportunidad de tener en sus medios móviles la App del congreso con información del mismo que se actualizará de forma periódica, simultáneamente con los avances del Comité Organizador.

The Uruguayan Society of Cardiology (SUC) chose Punta del Este to hold its congress in parallel with the 3rd Joint SUC-SEC (Spanish Society of Cardiology) Symposium, the 2nd Joint SUC-ACC (American College of Cardiology) Symposium, the 8th River Plate Conference of Training Cardiologists CCFUR SUC-CONAREC, the XVIII Cardiology Nursing Meeting and the XXIV Pneumocardiology Meeting. In keeping with new times, the organization chose to go paperless, while substantially modifying the mechanism for sending Free Papers, modernizing and simplifying the process. A few months before the congress, all attendees had the opportunity to download the Congress App in their mobile devices; this enabled them to download the information about the conference that was updated periodically, along with the progresses incorporated by the Organizing Committee.

China-LAC, la cumbre empresarial más importante entre China y los países de América Latina y el Caribese desarrolló en Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center del jueves 30 de noviembre al sábado 2 de diciembre. Organizada por el Consejo Chino para el Fomento del Comercio Internacional (CCPIT), el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID) y, este año, por el Instituto de promoción de inversiones, exportaciones e imagen país, Uruguay XXI, CHINA LAC recibió 2.300 visitantes, 640 provenientes de China, 750 de diversos puntos de Uruguay y el resto de América Latina y el Caribe. Con más de 700 empresas reunidas durante las jornadas de la cumbre, esta décimo primera edición batió récords, y se transformó en la más grande realizada en América Latina, superando ampliamente la última realizada en México. En la cumbre se presentaron más de cuarenta ponentes y se contó con la presencia de destacadas autoridades nacionales, altos funcionarios y expertos de China y América Latina, representantes de organismos multilaterales e internacionales de financiamiento. El evento ocupó las instalaciones del complejo en su totalidad. La exposición nucleó 192 expositores provenientes de 45 países, en una amplia gama de productos y servicios.

China-LAC, the most important business summit between China and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean took place in the Punta del Este Convention & Exhibition Center from Thursday 30 of November to Saturday 2 of December. The event was organized by the Chinese Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and this year, also by Uruguay XXI, the institute for the promotion of investment, exports and country image. CHINA LAC received 2,300 visitors, 640 from China, 750 from various points in Uruguay and the rest from Latin America and the Caribbean. This eleventh edition of the summit broke all previous records, as it gathered over 700 companies, hence becoming the largest in Latin America, far exceeding the last one in Mexico. The summit featured more than forty speakers and was attended by prominent national authorities, senior officials and experts from China and Latin America, as well as representatives of multilateral and international funding agencies. The event occupied the entire facilities of the complex and gathered 192 exhibitors from 45 countries, displaying a broad range of products and services.
