2024 Genesis GV70 Electrified. Premium SUV Stands Out.

Korean luxury performance brand Genesis’ increases its line up of fully electric powered SUVs with the Genesis electrified GV70. The sleek looks remain with minor changes for 2024. The four-cylinder 2.5T models receive upgraded brakes and new design 19-inch wheels. There are also new insignias and new exterior colours.

The GV70 Electrified arrives equipped with a 77.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, and an electric motor at the front and rear axles, with a claimed 383 km of fully electric driving range. Combined power is 429 hp and 516 lb-ft torque with a Boost Mode function that allows a heady 483 hp rush in a ten second burst. The GV70e offers an impressive 0-100 km/h time of around 4 seconds through a single speed transmission.

The base GV gasoline 2.5L turbocharged four cylinder offers a hefty 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. The Sport has the 3.5L turbocharged V6 with an impressive 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to 8-speed auto, with AWD as standard. The top 3.5T Sport Plus weighs in ELSD (electronic limited slip differential). Our tester

was the all-wheeldrive Electrified GV70 Prestige AWD version. the EV driving range is between 400 and 440 km - translating to 2.6L /100km combined.

The GV70e also packs an impressive electrical charging system that allows the vehicle to recharge from a claimed 10 to 80 percent in 18 minutes. No access to a fast charger? Charge time with a Level 2 charger takes about 7 hours. and with a 50 kWh Level 3 charger to 10-80% charge in just over one hour. The GV70 interior as you can expect fro the upstart luxury brand includes an attractive premium design, materials and Mercedes and Audi like attention to detail.

Upon entering the cabin, there is a light airy feel and an air of opulence. The choice of materials is upscale, and the fit and finish are about on par with the best of German premium autos;. Lots of buttery soft leather Nappa draping the seats, high quality milled and knurled aluminum trim and high-quality switchgear and fixtures. The GV70 is also loaded to the gills with features There are also heated massaging Front and rear seats. The infotainment system is easy to navigate and the digital gauge cluster has a cool 3D effect. Overall cabin ambience is luxurious with enough room to stretch out in front and rear. Fit and finish is exemplary.

The vehicle has all the safety you could want with Driver Assist systems such

as highway driving assist that can automatically perform lane changes, and auto collision avoidance.

On the road, the EV powertrain is delightfully smooth and powerful whipping the GV70 instantly to high speeds. The electrified GV70 features a Boost button, which literally does “boost” the combined output of the motors to 483 hp for 10 seconds in a stunning whoosh of power- addictive! There are several regenerative brake settings and a one-pedal driving function. The different drive modes have been well calibrated and there is a smooth seamless power delivery that is well metered out. There are multiple modes of brake regeneration, adjustable via the paddle shifters, and a dedicated mode allowing for one-pedal driving. Road handling and stability is well composed, as Genesis went for a slightly softer suspension for comfort, but there is tad inoffensive body roll on sharp cornering. The GV70e is a rather portly SUV thanks to its heavy batteries and EV hardware under the floor, but hustles along fairly well with no genuine issues.

Aside from rapid acceleration the GV 70e drives in everyday situation in a refined manner in near silence making for a relaxed luxurious drive.

Highlights include the stunning forward-looking design that is so unique and of course the Genesis buying experience. You do not need to haggle as Genesis has a fixed price structure with few additions and no hidden surprises and fees. Heck you do not even need to go to the dealership!

Buyers can order a Genesis online; the car will be delivered to you for your test drive or if you deice you want it. The Genesis Concierge service will drop the car off and includes a pickup and drop off valet service for maintenance, and a courtesy car. You can organise this all from your armchair or desk. Genesis also includes a five-year/100,000 km of complementary scheduled service. The GV70 Electrified is a stand out and comes highly recommended. 2024 Genesis GV70 Electrified prestige: Priced from $84,500 More info at www.genesis.com.

Government of Canada introduces legislation for citizenship by descent

Canadian citizenship is highly valued around the world. It provides the right to vote, to run for political office and to hold a Canadian passport. For many immigrants, citizenship is key to integration. It also provides a sense of belonging to a diverse and inclusive country built on the principles of democracy, equality and multiculturalism.

Legislative changes in 2009 amended the Citizenship Act to add a firstgeneration limit to citizenship by descent, which means that a Canadian citizen parent can pass on citizenship to a child born outside Canada if they were either born in Canada or naturalized before the birth of the child.

As a result of the first-generation limit, Canadian citizens who were born outside Canada cannot pass on citizenship to their child born outside Canada, and cannot apply for a direct grant of citizenship for a child born outside Canada and adopted. Today, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, introduced legislation that would extend citizenship by descent beyond the first generation in a way that is inclusive and protects the value of Canadian citizenship.

This legislation would automatically confer Canadian citizenship to persons born abroad to a Canadian parent who is also born abroad prior to the coming into force of this legislation. It would also extend access to a direct grant of citizenship to children born abroad and adopted by a Canadian parent beyond the first generation. Following the coming into force of the legislation, parents born abroad who have or adopt children also born outside Canada will need to have spent at least 1,095 cumulative days of physical presence in Canada prior to the birth or adoption of their child to pass on citizenship.

Bill C-71, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (2024), would

also restore citizenship to “Lost Canadians”—individuals who lost or never acquired citizenship as a result of outdated provisions of previous citizenship legislation. Bill C-71 would also provide citizenship to the descendants of “Lost Canadians” and to anyone born abroad to a Canadian parent in the second or subsequent generations, before the legislation comes into force.

People who may be impacted by the changes proposed in Bill C-71, An Act to amend the Citizenship Act (2024), will no doubt have questions about what this means for them and their families. If the bill passes in Parliament and receives royal assent, we will work as quickly as possible to implement these changes and will provide more information for eligible individuals on our website.

Quote: “The current rules generally restrict citizenship by descent to the first generation, excluding some people who have a genuine connection to Canada. This has unacceptable consequences for families and impacts life choices, such as where individuals may choose to live, work, study, or even where to have children and raise a family. These changes aim to be inclusive and protect the value of Canadian citizenship, as we are committed to making the citizenship process as fair and transparent as possible.”

– The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

Quick facts: Under the former section 8 of the Citizenship Act, some individuals lost citizenship at the age of 28. These generally include people born as the second generation abroad between February 15, 1977, and April 16, 1981, who turned 28 before the first-generation limit was introduced in 2009.

Legislative changes in 2009 and 2015 restored or gave citizenship to the

vast majority of “Lost Canadians” who had lost it or never received it due to outdated legislation. A number of people have been issued certificates of Canadian citizenship as a result of these changes.

On December 19, 2023, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice declared that the first-generation limit is unconstitutional, which generally

limited citizenship by descent to persons who are born to a Canadian parent abroad in the first generation (with some exceptions). The Government of Canada did not appeal the ruling because we agree that the law has unacceptable consequences for Canadians whose children were born outside the country.

Canada’s Largest Water Sports Rental Marina Launches The Only Parasailing Experience in Southwest British Columbia

Cultus Lake Marina is launching a 500-foot parasailing experience, available as of June 1st. Cultus Lake Marina is the only water sports rental marina to offer this water adventure in southwest BC, another first after announcing hydro flights last summer. “We are always looking for ways to improve and remain competitive. This season brings parasailing along with hydro flights, jet skis, pontoons, and speed boats with wakeboards and tubes. We have also re-envisioned our patio space and have revised our menu, bringing our customers an inclusive and private experience,” says Steve Marks, owner of Cultus Lake Marina. Guests can ride single, tandem, or as a triple flight with a combination of children and adults. The exhilarating eight to ten minute experience brings guests up to 500 feet in the air and offers views of the Fraser Valley and Cascade Mountains.

Although the parasailing and hydro flights mainly appeal to adults, families with younger children are also accommodated. The Fly Ride hydro flight allows children

as young as five years old to ride with tested safety features, such as a computerized gyro scope for a smooth and controlled experience.

The warm 12-kilometre freshwater lake is also a popular destination for fishing, swimming, and hiking and the year-round resort community includes campgrounds, waterslides, a golf course, and adventure park rides.

About Cultus Lake Marina- Cultus Lake Marina has the largest rental fleet in Canada including water accessories. It is a family owned and operated business, managed by the owners Steve and Hailey Marks. With a renovated event space, the marina is available for licensed weddings and special events. The Props Café’s signature sandwich is its Maui Waui — a locally-sourced boneless Maui rib steak sandwich on a kaiser bun.

Mabuhay House Society Updates Filipino Community Leaders for Provincial Community Cultural Centre in preparation for June Filipino Heritage Month

Vancouver, B.C.- The Filipino community is poised for a transformative cultural endeavor as Mabuhay House Society rallies community leaders in support of its mission, vision and plan to establish a Filipino Community Cultural Centre in BC. On May 8, 2024, the Mabuhay House Society shared updates with community leaders on the current multi-year “Capital Project Timeline” based on the general guideline provided by Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture and the next steps to create an inclusive and vibrant hub that celebrates the rich cultural heritage and contributions of Filipino Canadians.

At the heart of the Mabuhay House Society lies a vision of fostering unity, celebrating diversity, and preserving heritage within the Filipino community. Guided by the principles of inclusivity (Lahat Kasama), unity (Bayanihan), and community service

(Serbisyo sa Komunidad), Mabuhay House Society is committed to creating a space where individuals of all backgrounds and generations can come together to learn, share, and connect through cultural exchange and educational programming.

Mabuhay House Society’s close working relationship with the BC Ministry of Tourism Arts Culture and Sport signifies a pivotal milestone in the realization of its vision. The generous grant of $250,000 provided in 2023 for capacity building underscores the province's commitment to supporting initiatives that promote cultural diversity and community engagement. To which the final report has been delivered to the Minister in which she says she “was happy with the work that was done. Now the engagement comes back to the government, and we will be launching a website through the government.”

Capacity building is the process of developing skills to overcome obstacles and techniques for sustainability. It gives the non profit society the ability to deliver its mission and goals effectively now and in the future. It is a mandatory requirement of the Provincial government/s capital funding..

Through this funding and close relationship with TACS, the organization has been able to establish foundations in the community that will catapult the development of the Filipino Community Cultural Centre, especially with the recent announcement of federal support to becoming a funding partner.

We are looking forward to the launch of a provincial survey that will provide the community an opportunity to provide their direct feedback. Mabuhay House Society is solidifying its multi-year strategic plan that outlines a comprehensive roadmap from engagement to construction, ensuring the sustainable growth and success of the Filipino Community Cultural Centre and the underlying Filipino Communities and Organizations.

Beginning with extensive community engagement initiatives to gather input and feedback, the strategic plan encompasses the development of a robust business plan that aligns with the community's needs and aspirations, and supported by the provincial and federal government funding programs. With a clear focus on transparency, accountability, and collaboration, the Mabuhay House Society is dedicated to realizing the Filipino Community Cultural Centre as a beacon of cultural pride and heritage that will last beyond generations.

“Mabuhay House Society, along with its board members, is poised and ready to undertake this intentional and lengthy process to develop the Filipino Community Cultural Centre. It is important we take the time to engage with our community and take into account their needs and requirements, from space, programming, and services, to truly celebrate the diverse history and background of Filipinos,” said Sammie Jo Rumbaua, Chair of Mabuhay House Society. “We have to work together as one community with all levels of government moving

forward in order to have a Filipino Community Cultural Centre that represents our pride and strength as Filipino Canadians.”

In light of these developments, Mabuhay House Society extends its heartfelt gratitude to the BC Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sports, Canadian Government as well as the Filipino community leaders and stakeholders who have demonstrated unwavering support and commitment to this transformative project.

About Mabuhay House Society:

Established in 2021, the Mabuhay House Society is a registered nonprofit society working closely with the provincial government to develop a provincial Filipino Community Cultural Centre that will be an inclusive, intercultural, and intergenerational space that Filipino Canadians can call home. 3 tips for a smooth trip back to Canada

(NC) Whether you’re returning from an international holiday or work-related travel, once you get to the airport or border crossing, you probably just want to get home. But, first, you need to pass through customs and immigration. Here are three tips to help you speed up the process next time.

Prefill your customs declaration: Instead of filling in your customs declaration when you get to the airport, you can complete the form up to 72 hours before arriving at select Canadian airports, which will give you access to express lanes. You’ll need to confirm your declaration when you get to the airport kiosk. Know your limits: If you’re out of the country for more than 48 hours, you can bring back goods worth up to $800 without paying any duty or taxes.

There are also limits on the quantity of certain products you can bring back, including food. Restrictions vary depending on the item and the country from which it originates. In addition, certain foods or products may not meet Canadian standards or regula-

tions regarding ingredients, labelling or production practices. What not to bring back to Canada: Some souvenirs and mementos from your travels may be prohibited or require permits because they are fully or partly made of endangered or threatened species. It’s important to check before coming back to Canada. The country you’re bringing these items from may also require a permit to export them.

Certain foods are also prohibited, including pork products. This is to protect Canada’s pigs from African swine fever (ASF). It’s a viral disease that cannot be transmitted to humans and is not a food safety risk, but it’s almost always deadly for any type of pig. Leaving pork products in their country of origin is an important step in avoiding an outbreak of ASF that would have extreme impacts on Canadian producers and our economy.

Remember, if you have any prohibited food, plant or animal items in your luggage and you do not declare them, you can receive a penalty of up to $1,300.

Expanded heat pump program helps British Columbians save on homeenergy costs

British Columbians are seeing firsthand the costly impacts of more frequent and intense, extreme weather events fuelled by climate change.

Reducing pollution and making life more affordable, while building a strong economy will help ensure a secure, healthy future for everyone.

Parents:

Do you know what your teenagers are getting up to?

(NC) The teenage years are a mix of hormones, self-discovery and transitioning from childhood to adulthood. If you have teens – or soon-to-be teens – you may be feeling a sense of growing separation as they become more comfortable on their own.

The growing technology gap doesn’t help that feeling, either. As any parent knows, if you need to figure out how to set up a new electronic device or debug an old one, ask a teenager. They’ve grown up surrounded by technology and are usually among the first to adopt new devices or tools. They’re also experts at using social media. Unfortunately, some social media content creators – or “influencers” – do questionable things to gain those all-important “likes” and “shares.” And their followers often mimic their risky behaviour. For example, there’s a social media challenge where people are dared to record and share videos of something dangerous happening near a moving train or on railroad tracks.

As past generations have learned, it doesn’t take social media to inspire teens to take risks. Railway tracks have been seen as quick shortcuts for young people for years. There have also been reports of people climbing onto moving trains.

There are countless dangers around tracks and trains that can lead to injuries or even death. It endangers the risk-takers as well as passengers and crews on trains. Flying debris could injure bystanders or damage property, and sparks from sudden braking can start fires.

If your child has shown an interest in protecting the environment, point out how passenger trains are a great way to reduce emissions, instead of people using individual cars.

Another option could be to explain how their part-time job relies on the supply chain, which might hit home for them.

Steven Guilbeault, federal Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and Jonathan Wilkinson, federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, announced a federal investment up to $103.7 million from Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Fund and the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program to support climate action in B.C. and help people with low or middle incomes reduce their energy costs. They were joined by Josie Osborne, B.C.’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation, and George Heyman, B.C.’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, who announced an investment up to $151 million from the Province of British Columbia toward this initiative.

“More and more British Columbians are ready to switch from fossil fuels to clean energy, while making their homes more efficient and comfortable,” Osborne said. “We are working to make electric heat pumps and efficiency upgrades more affordable for low- and middle-income households across the province, helping them to save on their energy bills and build cleaner, more resilient communities.”

Funding from Environment and Climate Change Canada and Energy and Natural Resources Canada will be used by British Columbia to provide grants to enable residents to switch their home heating systems from oil, propane or natural gas to cleaner heating and cooling options. Funding will also enable building upgrades for income-qualified homeowners and tenants through the CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program, which aims to support the installation of heat pumps to reduce energy bills for low- and middle-income households. Heat pumps also provide cooling in summer, protecting residents against extreme heat and replacing the need for separate air conditioners.

With the support of the OHPA program, income-qualified applicants could receive a rebate of as much as $16,000 to switch to high-efficiency heat pumps in homes currently heated with oil. With the support of the Low Carbon Economy fund, these changes will also apply to homes heated with natural gas and propane. This is an increase in support of approximately 70% from B.C.’s existing rebate program.

Those who are eligible and living in northern B.C. can access up to an additional $3,000 toward the installation of a heat pump. Homes that require an electrical system upgrade can also qualify for a rebate of up to $5,000 to complete the work.

This funding could help incomequalified applicants receive a total of as much as $24,000 to cover the costs of heat-pump installation, including electrical upgrades. In addition to these increased rebates, successful OHPA applicants who make the switch from oil heating to an electric heat pump will also receive an up-front, one-time payment of $250 from the Government of Canada. The CleanBC Better Homes Energy Savings Program also provides funding for home upgrades, such as the installation of energy-efficient windows and doors, insulation and ventilation. These programs will reduce emissions and build a clean economy by facilitating 16,000 retrofits in low- and middle-income households. This program is estimated to reduce more than 40,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030. This is approximately the same as removing more than 12,000 passenger vehicles from the road, and will create more than 900 full-time jobs.

At the same time, the programs will improve affordability by improving energy efficiency and lowering monthly utility costs. Households that switch from fossil fuels to electric heat pumps for space heating can see energy savings of as much as 80%.

Heat pumps are a proven technology in Canada, capable of providing yearround comfort control for a home by heating it in winter, cooling it in summer and, in some cases, heating water. Heat pumps, despite their name, can also act as air conditioners.

What you don’t know may hurt you

(NC) You might be surprised to know how many potentially toxic chemicals you likely have in your home. From bleach and colourful laundry detergent packets to household cleaners, paint and windshield washer fluid. Here’s how to keep everyone at home safe.

Understand common household risks: You should always read the label on the product to make sure there are no special handling instructions, such as wearing gloves or a mask when using it. Always wash your hands thoroughly after using any chemicals.

Also, be aware that some products should never be mixed. If you accidentally mix bleach and ammonia, for example, you’ll end up creating a poisonous gas.

Consider also choosing low-emission paints and varnishes, when possible, to help minimize off-gassing in your home.

You should also regularly inspect containers for signs of corrosion or leaking and dispose of any damaged packaging. Contact your municipality for the location and hours of the nearest hazardous waste disposal site.

Keep children safe: Children are most at risk for unintentional poisonings, in part because they’re less likely to be able to read or understand the warning labels. They also have smaller, developing bodies that can be impacted by small doses.

As soon as they’re old enough to understand the danger, you should teach kids what the various hazard signs mean on a package, including poison, explosive, corrosive and flammable.

Medicines should be stored in childresistant packaging out of reach of young children. Remember to bring unused and expired prescription drugs, over-thecounter medications and natural health products to your local pharmacy for proper disposal.

Keep cleaning, laundry and painting supplies in a locked cupboard or storage room that children can’t get into.

If you suspect someone’s ingested a toxic substance, call the new toll-free number immediately for advice: 1-844-POISONX (844-764-7669). In Quebec, call 1-800-463-5060.

Statement by Minister Miller on increasing the cap for the special measures for Gaza

The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today issued the following statement on increasing the number of applications that will be accepted into processing under the temporary special measures for Palestinian extended family in Gaza:

“We remain deeply concerned about the humanitarian tragedy unfolding in Gaza. Many people are worried about their loved ones and have expressed significant interest in the temporary special measures we introduced for their extended family in Gaza. That is why, as part of our humanitarian response, we have increased the number of temporary resident visa applications that will be accepted into processing as part of these measures from 1,000 to 5,000. Over the past few weeks, we have been issuing

more web codes so that clients can apply for a temporary resident visa.

“While movement out of Gaza is not currently possible, the situation may change at any time. With this cap increase, we will be ready to help more people as the situation evolves. Our focus remains on keeping families together.

“Canada continues to put forward the names of those who have passed preliminary screening to local authorities to secure their exit from Gaza. Israel and Egypt are both important partners in implementing these temporary, humanitarian measures and helping people reunite with their family in Canada. Canada is working—at every level—to facilitate the exit of extended family members and advocate for their safety. We will continue to advocate for people’s safety.”
