Bike to Work & School with Mayor Braun On Tuesday, May 26 residents are invited to join Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun on a group bike ride on their way to work or school. The ride will make stops at designated places for people to join. People are encouraged to join the ride at a

location that is most convenient for them. The ride starts at 7 am at LifeCycles Bike Shop. People can join in at Community Services at 7:30, at Mill Lake Park (Bevan Parking Lot) at 7:45, or

at Mill Lake Park (by the ball diamonds) at 7:55. The ride will end at a Celebration Station in the Canadian Tire Parking Lot where people can enjoy free snacks, Starbucks, bike safety checks, and celebrate cycling with KISS Radio. The Celebra-

tion Station is open to all residents from 7-9 am. This is a great opportunity for inexperienced cyclists to try cycling in traffic in a group setting. “In our busy lives it can be a challenge to incorporate physical activity into our daily routines, biking to work is an excellent option,” says Mayor Braun. Last year during Bike to Work Week, close to 700 Fraser Valley residents saved 3,552 kilograms of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by choosing to bike during that week rather than drive. “Biking to work is a great way to reduce the carbon footprint on our environment,” says Mayor Braun. Mayor Braun says, “biking is a great way to help make ourselves feel better and make our community a better place to live, work and play. Participating in a community ride together helps us celebrate the importance of healthy living and appreciate the beautiful City we

live in. An opportunity one doesn’t experience when driving in a vehicle.”

This year, registered participants have an opportunity to enter to win a lot of great prizes including a Grand Prize of a Cycling Trip Tour for two from Prague to Budapest. To be eligible to win any of the prizes, participants register for free at www.biketowork.ca. If people cannot cycle to work or school, they can cycle to run errands, meet friends for coffee, or anywhere else that they’d normally drive to in order to qualify for the prize draw. “The goal is to cut down the use of a vehicle during Bike to Work Week and use a bike instead,” says Gifford. “We hope people discover that biking to get where they need to go is enjoyable!”
