A FESTIVAL OF A DIFFERENT COLOUR FEATURING THE CHAMPION CHASE TUESDAY 27TH APRIL 2021

WELCOME TO

Dear Friends of Punchestown, On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to Day 1 of the 2021 Punchestown Festival, William Hill Champion Chase Day. As we all know unfortunately this year’s renewal of the Punchestown Festival is not taking place in the format which we have all previously known, loved and enjoyed. That said it is still the Punchestown Festival albeit in a different guise. The Punchestown team is intent on embracing and adapting to the current scenario to ensure you don’t miss a moment of magic. It still is the biggest week of the year on the Irish Racing Calendar, with over €2.9 million in prizemoney, featuring 12 Grade 1 Contests, showcasing the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. The next five days really are something to savour and we hope that you enjoy the action from the comfort and safety of your own home as we bring the Punchestown home straight to you. In recent months, Ireland has enjoyed a phenomenal showcase of jump racing and the current strength and depth of Irish sporting talent in this sphere. The 2021 Punchestown Festival is set to be a homecoming of champions and a fitting grand finale to what has been an exceptional source of pride for Ireland and brought immense joy to so many during these challenging times. Although the season is far from over and we’re thrilled to see such an array of notable entries from the U.K. who are set to renew rivalries again on Irish soil. The U.K. involvement is such an integral part of our festival and we sincerely thank all connections for making the effort to travel to Punchestown. We really do hope you enjoy the experience and we wish you every success. The support and goodwill that we have received from our sponsors today has been nothing short of overwhelming particularly in these difficult times. Your continued involvement is very gratefully appreciated and it is certainly something which we will never forget. I also particularly want to acknowledge the owners who despite not being able to go racing in recent months, have continued to keep their horses in training. This has played a fundamental role in ensuring that the action on the track will be nothing short of spectacular for all of us to enjoy. Finally, it is often said around here that it is the people that make Punchestown and the recent times have really proved that more than ever. To say we will miss welcoming, meeting and chatting with all of our sponsors, clients, supporters and members would be a massive understatement, it simply will not be the same without you. This has made us all at Punchestown even more determined, that when we do gather to celebrate the return of the Punchestown Festival in 2022 that it will be a party not to be missed so make sure to put it in the diary! Looking forward to welcoming you back to Punchestown soon… Conor O’Neill, Punchestown CEO.

RACE PREVIEW The William Hill Champion Steeplechase of €250,000 (Grade 1)

Allaho

Chacun Pour Soi In a mouth-watering snapshot of what lies ahead over the next five days, the William Hill Champion Chase encapsulates some of the very best elements of the Punchestown Festival. At the head of the market we have two of the most exciting steeplechasers in training poised to go at it, with Allaho and Chacun Pour Soi set to provide an intriguing clash of the titans. Chacun Pour Soi suffered his first defeat in five starts in the Queen Mother Champion Chase, but don’t forget he posted one of his best performances on his only previous outing at the Kildare gala two years ago. Allaho, in contrast, has failed to win in his two previous Punchestown outings. However, he obliterated his Ryanair Chase opposition from the front at Cheltenham, so he arrives with his tail up now that he drops in trip. With Rachael Blackmore retaining the ride on him for Willie Mullins, and Paul Townend making a comeback from injury in a bid to fend off her audacious title bid on his stable-mate, that alone promises to be a fascinating rivalry with the prospect of some old-fashioned needle. Then there is the potent British challenge, with Dan Skelton pitching in his Champion Chase runner-up Nube Negra and Kim Bailey also having a cut with First Flow. Throw into the mix a few capable sorts like Cilaos Emery, Castlegrace Paddy and Daly Tiger, and there is the potential for an upset as well. All the ingredients are there for an epic encounter.

RACE VERDICT

A race for the ages. MONKFISH is readily preferred, as Envoi Allen blotted his copybook at Cheltenham when alarmingly weak in the market in face of what seemed a straightforward task. He steps up in trip and has a bit to prove, for all that he remains hugely exciting. The selection is a superb performer and jumps like a pro. [Johnny Ward] Source: Racing Post

FR. SEAN BREEN REMEMBERED AT PUNCHESTOWN In a fitting tribute to the late Fr. Breen, The Kildare Hunt Club Fr. Sean Breen Memorial Steeplechase for the Ladies Cup will take place today. Fr. Sean Breen was an ambassador for National Hunt Racing and we at Punchestown are delighted to honour him in this appropriate way. It is only fitting that all the friends of ‘The Breener’ would feel part of today’s event. We all have one thing in common – we all loved him. Furthermore I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Kildare Hunt Club who have generously sponsored the race. Conor O’Neill, Punchestown CEO.

A Brief History of Kildare Hunt Club by David Mongey Chairman of Punchestown The Kildare Hunt Club was founded in 1751 in the late 18th century. Before that time, there was a record of three private hunt packs, Mr Thomas Connolly’s (The Squire ) of Castletown, the Rt Hon WB Ponsonby’s of Bishopscourt, whose name “ The Farmers Race” is named after and Mr John Kennedy of JohnstownKennedy who Lord Mayo called “the Father of the Kildare Hunt”. The aristocratic complexion of County Kildare underwent another significant evolution during the 1790’s when five of its wealthiest families were advanced in the Ascendancy, as the hierarchy of Irish gentry and nobility became known. Amongst these were the forebears of three men who would play a key role in the history of the Kildare Hunt Club. The Marquis of Drogheda, the Earl of Clonmel and the Earls of Mayo. For the next century, virtually every aspect of life in the county was determined by these families along with the Dukes of Leinster, the Barons de Robeck and dynasties such as Aylmex, Connolly, Eustace, Wolf, Ponsonby, Henry, De Burg and La Touche. As can be seen from the above the early historical background of the Kildare Hunt was moulded by the dominance of the landowning aristocracy. Many of the landlords wielded considerable political, sporting and social power not only in Ireland but England as well. It was a period of elegance and extravagance for the ruling classes which would be extinguished by the horrors of the First World War. The factors which exerted such influence a century ago have long faded away. Now the responsibility of the Kildare Hunt Club is in the hands of the men & women of Kildare who have managed to retain the traditions of the past and also understands its responsibility in passing on those traditions to the future. The Hunt Club used to host its races in various locations around the country and in the 1840’s and during mastership of John La Touché the members of the Kildare Hunt Club decided to buy the lands at Punchestown. Those lands today are still held in trust by the Trustees of the Kildare Hunt Club for the use and promotion of all equestrian sports. This is a very important week for the Kildare Hunt Club and its Management Team at Punchestown. The National Hunt Festival at Punchestown, in April, is a national institution. It plays a very important role in the social, cultural and economical activity of the country not to mention the owners, sponsors, trainers and jockeys who try to add their names to the winning board. It gives the Kildare Hunt Club great pleasure to sponsor the 7th race today which is in memory of Fr Sean Breen. Fr Sean was a true friend to Punchestown and avid supporter of Horse Racing.

RACE VERDICT

Enda Bolger won this for the seventh time in ten years when Blue Templar beat stablemate YOUCANNOTBESERIOUS two years ago. Despite having not run in the interim, Derek O’Connor’s mount may cope with the stable’s other runner Saint Benedict who has become expensive to follow in hunter chases. Fiston De Mou is unexposed and could feature if adapting to the demands of the course. Enniskillen, Vital Island, Mia’s Milan and Festival Opera have coped with this course in the past. RACE VERDICT

It seems unlikely that we saw the best of HARA KIRI at Gowran when he was a short-priced beaten favourite after racing too keenly. He is to make amends here, perhaps at the chief expense of Donnrua Dream and Mythical Hero who both showed promise on debut. King Of Cashel is potentially one of the more interesting newcomers, along with Whatcoloristhewind and Crowns Major. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post
