Its founder and lead dermatologist, Dr. Kathleen Moe, has worked for the past 15 years to assemble and maintain a professional team with a mission of delivering “outstanding results, excellent experience, and superior care.”

“I chose dermatology due to its diverse conditions, impact on quality of life, procedural variety, and patient relationships,” explains Dr. Moe. She graduated at the top of her class from Michigan State University and was ranked in the top 10% of students at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

“Both medical and cosmetic dermatology allow me to practice the science and art of medicine to its fullest,” she notes.

Listening to and caring about patients, she adds, “is at the heart of all we do at the practice. We also stay on the cutting edge of technology and innovation.”

This summer the practice will introduce Gentle Cure, a non-invasive, non-surgical treatment to cure basal and squamous cell cancer. Dr. Moe has also brought in the Ultra Clear laser, for skin rejuvenation through micro-coring.

In addition to providing top tier dermatology, Frederick Dermatology Associates supports charitable community outreach organizations such as the Women’s Giving Circle, the Mental Health Association, and this fall, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition.

The latter is especially important to Dr. Moe, who was diagnosed with early-stage ovarian cancer in December 2023 and underwent a radical hysterectomy.

“I want to raise funds to bring awareness to this cancer, which is often diagnosed in late stages, and save lives,” she says.

“I

Lisa was inspired to open her Brunswick boutique Potomac River Interiors after designing and building “a lovely remote getaway” near Harper’s Ferry that she and her husband recently reimagined into a vacation rental property.

“I’ve always been a retail girl through and through,” explains Lisa, who admits to writing up shop plans at age 16 “instead of paying attention in science class. I've wanted this for a long time.”

Which is why, when her yoga teacher Machelle Lee announced she’d be renovating the historic Newberry Building in Brunswick, Lisa leapt from her mat and dove into opening her business.

She channeled her design expertise, eclectic style and penchant for pulling together vintage finds and stunning staples into a new full-service hybrid business that combines professional design services and one-stop boutique shopping.

“Sometimes people know exactly what they’re looking for,” says Lisa, who lives in Downtown Frederick with her husband and son. “More often than not they come to the shop, take in its cozy vibe, and ask, ‘How can I make my home feel like this?’

“Or something will just jump out at them,” she adds. “Not something they were looking for, not something they necessarily ‘need,’ but a beautiful something that spoke to them.”

Sage Cakery

S

ure, you can stop by Sage Cakery in Urbana for cupcakes, macarons or cookies — chocolate chips, lemon thumbprints, Linzers, and more. But you’ll need to know where you’re going.

“The storefront’s a little bit tricky to find, kind of up the hill and off the beaten path,” says Nikkie Byrd, who owns the shop with her partner in life and business, Kurtis. “You’ve gotta want to come to us.”

But once you get there, Byrd promises all the above-mentioned treats as well as cake pops, dessert bars and locally roasted espresso, plus a cozy seating area and patio to relax and enjoy the sweet bounty.

“We make everything entirely from scratch,” Byrd says. “We have a lot of allergy-friendly options: gluten free, vegan, nut free, soy free. And we’re very conscious about avoiding cross contamination. It’s a huge part of what we do.”

But what they do best at Sage Cakery is cake.

Byrd and her team of a dozen bakers and decorators are known for custom creations for birthdays, baby showers, corporate events and weddings: “If you have the vision and the budget for it, we can make just about anything as far as cakes go.”

Heart-shaped Italian wedding cakes are a must-have for this year’s brides and elaborate bespoke cakes are coming back into favor. Byrd loves the shift back to creative cake displays, and she has the staff to make confectionery dreams come true.

“We’ve got several crazy-talented decorators,” she notes, “artists by trade who landed in cake decorating, sculptors and amazing bakers.”

Kurtis, the lead baker, is joined by wedding coordinator Faith, a graduate of L’Academie de Cuisine and an award-winning cake artist who spent time at Earth and Sugar while also working at Sage Cakery. Faith now leads their wedding coordination with creativity and care. Leading the decorating team is Lauren, a Culinary Institute of America (CIA NY) graduate and former sous chef for José Andrés, who brings artistry and expertise to every design.

“We’ve got some wonderful people out front helping customers, and professionally trained chefs in the kitchen,” says Byrd. “Everything’s made from scratch — no mixes — and we use high quality ingredients, no preservatives.”

“That’s why we’re so successful, why people love our products: because of the high level of integrity,” she adds. “Looks good, tastes good.

YMCA Arts Center

R

icole Barnes has been working with kids since he was a kid himself.

“When I was 14, I used to volunteer for the Frederick City Youth Center,” said Barnes, who is now the Frederick YMCA Arts Center site director.

Barnes brings 20 years of experience at the Y and experience as a performer, podcaster and recording artist to his role as director, along with a personality and presence that make him a good mentor and role model.

At the Arts Center, the YMCA offers all kinds of art — music, dance, visual art, and theater — “and not just for kids, but for adults as well.”

The Y partners with organizations such as Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute to handle music lessons and Falling Squares to co-sponsor movie nights, as well as the Frederick Arts Council, and Head Start program.

The YMCA of Frederick County provides a safe and encouraging environment from which to explore the arts and express creativity

at the Y Arts Center, or YAC, a 20,000 square-foot cauldron of creativity right in the heart of downtown Frederick.

“At the YMCA we step up to serve ‘spirit, mind, and body,’” says Tom Clingman, the Frederick Y’s vice president for social responsibility. “To have a strong, vibrant arts program fits in with our mission; it’s not revolutionary — we’ve always done dance and the arts.”

Since beginning its lease in 2020, the YMCA's Arts Center has benefited from facility improvements made by the Ausherman Family Foundation. Thanks to a donation from the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, the center now features creative spaces including a Maker’s Space, Clay Studio, Recording Studio, STEM Center, and Gallery.

All things that mesh perfectly with Frederick’s artsy, fun, inclusive vibe, Barnes says.

“The Y feeds a need in downtown Frederick for the arts,” he says.

“It fits right in with what’s going on around here.”

HIGHER EDUCATION Hood College

I

n some ways, her unanimous appointment in April 2025 as president of Hood College is a full-circle moment for Debbie Ricker.

“I was born and raised in a small college town,” explains Ricker, a lifelong academic who earned a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University, a master’s degree from East Tennessee State University, and a bachelor’s degree from Mars Hill University. “Hood’s campus, to me, felt like an extension of my front yard.”

And now, after eight years as Hood’s provost and nine months as interim president, Ricker is ready to move forward at Hood, the small private college that’s deeply enmeshed with the City of Frederick.

“This community is, in large part, what makes Hood so special,” observes Ricker in her warm Southern drawl. “Our campus and classrooms are the ‘special sauce,’ but it’s undeniable the ways in which Frederick contributes so magnificently to us being able to deliver that mission to our students each and every day.”

Hood College is “fortunate to be embraced by the community — particularly the business community — that opens their doors to our students, our faculty, and our employees. And we lean heavily on them to inform the ways we shape and grow our curricula to support workforce development.”

Ricker says it’s a point of pride that more than three quarters of graduates remain in the state.

“We’re really proud of that,” she notes. “It’s embedded in our current strategic plan, and it’s going to be the backbone of our plan moving forward.”

Executing the current strategic plan and working to implement a follow-up plan have been Ricker’s main priorities even before her appointment.

“I was very clear in my role as interim president that I wasn’t just going to be a seat filler,” she says. “We have come too far as an institution, with some strong positive momentum from President Andrea Chapdelaine’s time, and I was anxious to move the ball down the field.”

Union Mills Public House

U

nion Mills Public House offers engaged couples something old and something new, all in one unforgettable historic space.

Once a clothing factory, the fully restored building has stood as a Frederick landmark since the late 19th century.

Today, it serves as a tastefully romantic, industrial-chic creekside venue for weddings and events.

Owners Niko and Mary Negas leased the space in late 2019 and reenvisioned it as a tastefully romantic industrial-chic full-service venue where they help create custom events. They loved the building’s history and its location on Carroll Creek.

“Upon our initial walkthrough, we realized immediately what a beautiful space this could be,” recalls Niko, a Frederick native and trained chef with roots in Baltimore.

“The space started speaking to us,” adds Mary. “Its history, the generations of families who worked here — the stories were just waiting to be retold.”

Inside, the 3,200 square-foot main room is a stunning blend of old-world character and modern elegance.

Sparkling chandeliers hang from soaring ceilings, casting warm light over the original exposed brick walls. This expansive room can accommodate intimate microweddings, grand 200-person seated receptions, or close to 300 for cocktail style events. In addition, it can support corporate events, fundraisers, and other special events.

The ambiance continues in an adjacent 3,200 squarefoot corridor, designed as a spacious cocktail or lounge area. With its own permanent bar, a wood-fired brick oven for making pizzas, and large, elegant restrooms, it’s ideal for mingling throughout the evening. Upstairs, a bridal suite/green room offers a private dressing area, bathroom and a vanity lounge/bar for pre-event preparation.

Outdoors, two private patios overlook Frederick’s scenic Carroll Creek, perfect for ceremonies, cocktail hours, or simply offering guests some fresh air and extra room to roam.

Married in December 2024, Niko and Mary bring more than 50 years of combined experience in the hospitality and service industry to Union Mills. Locals may recognize them from their first venture in town, Roasthouse Pub. Their handpicked staff share their passion for excellence and hospitality.

“Our floor and culinary teams are amazing,” the couple say. “We can’t express enough how much we appreciate

them — always going above and beyond for our couples, clients and guests.”

Union Mills typically serves as the exclusive caterer for events.

“A lot of caterers offer a cookie-cutter menu — ‘choose from column A, B, or C,’” says Niko. “But we see every couple as unique, just like their story. Every wedding should reflect that uniqueness, not only in the experience but in the food and drink they share with loved ones.”

Menus at Union Mills are carefully tailored and refined for each event. Whether that means weaving in a cherished family recipe, blending culinary traditions in a fusion menu, or honoring cultural elements in a marriage, the goal is always a personalized experience.

Just as couples work with florists and stylists to create a visual theme that reflects their love story, they’re invited to collaborate with the Union Mills team to design a one-of-a-kind culinary journey.

“Memories have a strong connection to the senses,” Niko says with a smile. “We facilitate the tastes, smells, sounds, and visuals that make for an unforgettable experience.”

Colonial Jewelers

T

he story of Colonial Jewelers has all the elements of the American Dream: A Russian clockmaker named Ben Hurwitz immigrates to the U.S. and opens up a jewelry store. Decades later, his son Will joins and renames the store, without compromising on quality, continuing under Will's son, Jeff's leadership. The store thrives, becoming the oldest business in Downtown Frederick, Maryland.

“That’s something we’re really proud of,” says Sarah Hurwitz Robey, great-granddaughter of Ben and current president of Colonial Jewelers. “Most people know Frederick as the wonderful, vibrant community we are now, but there was a time when it wasn’t the ‘hot spot to be.’

“In the 70's when most businesses left Downtown- we were committed to Downtown Frederick, we decided to stay, and I’m so proud of my parents and grandparents for that.”

Hurwitz Robey, who has a business degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a gemologist degree from Gemological Institute of America, grew up “playing store” as a young child. Now, as she greets customers and oversees the business, she finds the sense of history and purpose exhilarating.

“One of the coolest things is when somebody comes in and says, ‘Your grandpa sold my grandpa an engagement ring!’

That gives me chills every time.

“Or they’ll say, ‘My dad says the only place I should go is Colonial Jewelers.’ That’s such a testament to how well my dad ran the store for so many years.”

And after 77 years in Frederick, Colonial Jewelers continues its tradition of selling quality jewelry and watches, creating custom designs in-house, and serving as the area’s largest

single source for diamonds, engagement rings, wedding bands and fine jewelry.

“Quality is so important to us,” explains Hurwitz Robey. “It doesn’t have to be expensive, but we want to sell things that last. We’ve been here so long, and we are planning to be here for so long, so it’s important that the things we sell are well made.

“We have a wide variety of fashions, styles and price ranges,” she adds. “All are high quality.”

Hurwitz Robey is a proud member of the Frederick Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, which she credits with “so much advocacy for the business community and a tremendous resources for businesses large and small."

“That’s what makes our downtown so great — it’s a real community with all kinds of services,” she notes. “Banks and law offices, restaurants and retail. It’s become a tourist

destination, which is great, but we have a livable downtown and it’s very unique. This is something special.”

For generations the Hurwitz family has tremendously benefited from spouses' involvement in the business as well.

Will’s wife, Marilyn, was a brilliant business mind. Jeff’s wife, Patty, played an instrumental role in growing the company, contributing to sales, staffing, and financial operations. rett Hess knows what some people think of his profession.

“There’s a well-earned idea that accountants are nerdy little bean counters that don’t like human beings,” he laughs. “We’re very intentional in our hiring process, finding people who have personality, who have great communication skills, who are willing to pick up the phone and have a conversation with the client.”

Cactoctin Mountain Orchard

F

armer Kate was about 7 years old when she first learned from her grandfather how to graft apple trees.

“I thought I was just having such a fun time but in reality, I was learning and growing — growing the respect I have for the business now,” says Katlyn Robertson, who now oversees Catoctin Mountain Orchard, including the growing, community outreach, and bakery management.

The family business, just north of Thurmont along Route 15, is a 100-acre fruit farm growing strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, black raspberries, sweet and sour cherries, apples, peaches, plums and nectarines, as well as cabbage, kale, cucumbers, squash, peppers, tomatoes and pears.

Robertson is still inspired by her grandfather, Robert Black, and is often accompanied on the farm by her own toddler son, Graysen — the first of the fifth generation to grow up at the orchard.

The orchard thrives on a strong family foundation. Katlyn leads alongside her younger sister, Kylie, who helps manage the market and takes on major projects. Grandfather Robert and his sister Pat, part of the second generation, remain actively involved — making the farm a true multigenerational effort rooted in teamwork and tradition.

Robertson says there’s so much more to the Catoctin Mountain Orchard experience than locally grown produce. For one, there’s the in-house bakery, with its popular offerings including fruit pies, pound cakes and apple cider doughnuts. Also inside the market you’ll find locally sourced honey, ice cream, soaps and other gift items.

“These are things you couldn’t just buy at a local grocery store,” Robertson says.

The orchard’s pick-your-own experience is something that brings families together and gives children a bit of the hands-on outdoor learning experience she so cherishes from her own childhood.

“When you come to the farm you can see firsthand all the things we’re doing to make the Earth better,” she says. “When children come here, meet the farmer, stand on the farm, pick a berry or an apple fresh off the tree, vine or bush they gain a new respect for the environment and the way things grow.”

Robertson and her team address pest management and soil health using traditional farming practices handed down from her great-grandfather, Harry Black, who purchased the farm in 1961.

“We’re focused on keeping things authentic while educating the public along the way,” she says.

A

mene Jennai has always been fascinated by food.

“I grew up in a big family, and food was a big p art of life,” he explains.

Th ese days food is an enormous part of life for Jennai and his wife, Ariel, who opened Vintage Restaurant in New Market three years ago with two other partners.

“From the moment I first stepped into the restaurant, I was captivated by its charm and the rich sense of history it holds within the New Market community and the greater Frederick area,” recalls Jennai.

He and his wife have 36 years combined experience in the restaurant business. “When we renovated from Mealey’s to Vintage we wanted to preserve the building’s historic charm.”

Mission accomplished. Inside there’s a clean, modern farmhouse vibe. The scents of “slightly elevated American comfort food” pervade the space.

“We don’t want to be perceived as ‘fine dining’ and lock ourselves into a smaller niche,” explains Jennai, who says Vintage’s pot roast, chicken pot pie, crab cakes, and

smash burgers are customer favorites. “We want to appeal to couples on a nice date, to families, to parties. We check all the boxes.”

That includes a beautiful party space designed to hold up to 40 people for small wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, or bridal and baby showers. Jennai says the event space is a “blank canvas” that can be decorated to suit.

“We’re proud to offer that to the community,” he adds.

“We’re the only place in New Market that has a space that large.”

The Vintage kitchen is small, and staffed with what Jennai calls “a really tight team.” Ariel handles the front of house — “we’re a mom-and-pop shop” —while the kitchen turns out seasonal specials using classic techniques with a fresh twist.

“Our motto is ‘elevated comfort food and warm hospitality” says Jennai. “And at Vintage I think we’re able to marry those two concepts and live up to them every day.”

R

ichard Riley bought his first motorcycle in Barcelona while on leave from duty in the Navy.

“He was able to bring his Bultaco back stateside on the ship, with the permission of his commanding officer,” his son, Ian, explains with a chuckle. “Which probably wouldn’t happen today!”

A decade later Riley purchased Fredericktown Yamaha, where he’s sold motorcycles to enthusiasts for the past 50 years.

“We sell Yamahas, we service Yamahas, we have parts, accessories, apparel, and we’re active in the motorcycle community here,” Ian Riley says. “My dad is 79 and still comes to work every day and holds down the fort.”

Fredericktown Yamaha is a small family business with just eight employees. Ian says they run things the old school way.

“We’ve kept it small by design so we can keep that genuine personal experience for the customer. I’d love to say we were ‘big and fancy,’” he adds, jokingly. “But ‘small and sincere’ is probably a better description.”

Richard Riley was drawn to Frederick by the Barbara Fritchie Classic, a motorcycle race that’s been held at the Great Frederick Fair grounds on the Fourth of July since 1921.

“It’s the oldest half mile flat track race in the world,” notes Ian, who says his dad started coming to the race “in the late 1960s. Year after year people have come from all over the country, all over the world.”

Ian says people “from all walks of life” find their way to Fredericktown Yamaha, on the corner of Grove Road and Route 355 where the Rileys have watched Frederick grow and change over the last half century.

“We’re grateful to be in the Frederick community,” Ian says. “It’s a very diverse area that’s given us a lot of great relationships and a shared past.

“We’ve gotten to see multigenerational customers after 50 years,” he adds. “It’s just a gift, that families continue to enjoy what we do.”

W

hat keeps Frederick’s parks humming with life, art, and play year-round? It’s the talented and hardworking staff of the City of Frederick Parks and Recreation Department. From art education to athletic leagues to trail maintenance, this dedicated team makes sure every program and public space is not only functional, but flourishing.

“We really do have a great, dedicated pool of employees,” says Recreation Supervisor Catherine Effland. That dedication shines through in every playground, trail, and community event across the city.

One of the department’s newest additions is Jamie Gerhold, who stepped into the role of Art Program Coordinator in spring 2024. Jamie’s position launched an entirely new initiative for Parks & Rec, focused on visual arts, and she hit the ground running. Overseeing a team of art instructors, Jamie manages art clubs at three elementary schools, offers classes in clay, watercolor, painting, and mosaics at the William Talley Rec Center, and coordinates citywide events such as the Youth Artist Showcase and the Artist Market & Bazaar. Jamie also supports the department’s marketing and social media, spreading the word about everything Parks & Rec has to offer.

Meanwhile, Thi Nguyen leads the city’s ever-growing pickleball program.

As program coordinator, Thi manages scheduling, staffing, and facilities across four indoor courts, in addition to organizing seasonal leagues and tournaments at both indoor and outdoor venues. Her work is instrumental in helping residents stay active and connected.

Daniel Hirshorn, who joined the team during his senior year of college, now supervises youth sports and after-school programs. He’s been the creative force behind events such as Family Nights in the Park and Youth Sports Development initiatives, while also supporting pickleball and volleyball programs. Whether helping run the Youth Fishing Rodeo or Cookies and Cocoa with Santa, Daniel brings energy and heart to everything he does.

Behind the scenes, Steven Speak keeps things running smoothly at the department’s facilities. From managing custodial staff to building and maintaining essential equipment, Steven plays a vital role in preparing spaces — and pools — for every season.

Of course, none of the magic in Frederick’s 78 parks would be possible without the city’s Parks Crew Leaders. Jason Baker oversees the northern parks, including Kellerton and Clover Ridge. Travis Phelps keeps athletic fields such as McCurdy Field game-ready. Clay Smith handles central and southern parks, including the beloved Baker Park. Mike Stockman ensures the west side, including Sophie and Madigan’s Playground, is in top shape.

And George Staley, the city’s horticulturist, brings beauty to life across Carroll Creek and beyond.

These leaders, along with their crews, ensure that every picnic, game, event, and moment of peace in a Frederick park is supported by care and effort.

hurmont’s a great place to go out, just ask Vickie Grinder, the town’s economic development manager.

“I consider Thurmont a haven for outdoor recreation,” Grinder says. “Our most valuable resources, like Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park, are just 3 miles from downtown ... We have incredible natural resources, orchards, wineries, a distillery, even a zoo, and a welcoming downtown where people can eat in our restaurants. It’s all under one umbrella.”

Conveniently visitors can enjoy multiple outdoor experiences, from camping at Cunningham Falls to swim in its lake and marvel at the highest cascading waterfall in the state to sampling the beginner-to-expert hiking trails of Catoctin Mountain Park, neighbor to presidential retreat Camp David. Folks can pose for selfies at Thurmont’s covered bridges, follow the Thurmont Trolley Trail, and get to know hundreds of creatures at the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve.

Each of these spots is accessible by car, of course. But why not cycle through?

“Nine months out of the year Thurmont is all about outdoor recreation and cycling,” says Grinder, who notes the Baltimore Bike Club holds its renowned Civil War Century cycling event here every year. And Thurmont’s farmers market takes place every Saturday morning from late May to late September at Thurmont Community Park.

“We started our Main Street Farmers Market 21 years ago and it’s now the largest in Frederick County,” says Grinder. “We see so many young people coming, walking with their dogs and baby strollers — because we’re a sustainable, walkable community.”

Recognized as a designated Main Street Maryland Community since 2005 and nationally accredited for the past 8 years, Thurmont is a community that’s thriving despite, or perhaps because of, its location off the beaten path.

A

manda Haddaway of HR Answerbox has long been focused on human resources.

“I started in recruiting, then moved into employee communications,” says Haddaway, a Frederick native. “From there I went into training and development, and then I had an opportunity to step into human resources management.”

Which seems like a carefully laid platform for the many hats she now wears as owner and managing director of HR Answerbox. But Haddaway admits that she got into her field “accidentally,” after graduating from James Madison University in Virginia and working at a defense contracting firm as an analyst.

When the project she worked on lost funding, she had to find a new role — and landed a recruiting position in HR. “The rest, as they say, is history,” she laughs.

It’s a history that led to the launch of HR Answerbox nine years ago.

“Even if you have only a handful of hires, you still have HR responsibilities, but for small companies it’s hard to justify adding a human resources practitioner to the budget,” Haddaway notes.

HR Answerbox fills that gap.

“We really specialize in employee relations,” she says. “When an employee isn’t performing to their optimal level, or there’s a conflict between an employee and a manager, we get involved to help the business resolve those challenges.”

HR Answerbox also helps deal with compliance issues, which Haddaway says have “grown exponentially” in her 25 years in human resources.

Haddaway earned her master’s in labor and employment law from Tulane University Law School, a credential only about 2% of HR practitioners hold.

“Every jurisdiction has its own set of labor and employment laws,” she says. “Compliance has become a bit of a nightmare for business owners, who really want to be focused on bringing their product to market and growing the business.”

HR Answerbox can help with legal issues as well as hiring, training and retaining employees and creating and maintaining a positive, productive workplace culture.

“No one wants to work for a company that has unhappy employees and conflict and turnover,” Haddaway says. “Having good HR practices and procedures in place can mitigate those risks.”

Last January Haddaway acquired the Trainers and Consultants Referral Network, now part of her business, connecting clients with 260 consultants, trainers, and speakers.

“I sometimes joke that no one calls me when they’re having a good day,” she admits. “They call us when they’re in crisis. We get them through that and then try to build a long-term relationship.”

S

cott Peterson found golf later in life, but as general manager and head golf professional at Clustered Spires Golf Club in Frederick, he’s making up for lost time.

“I tell people all the time: I manage five businesses at the golf club,” says the Army veteran who pivoted from a marketing career to become a Class A PGA professional at age 45. “We have a restaurant, so I have to know about menu prep, health hazards and labor costs. We run a landscaping company — our maintenance staff drives tractors, applies chemicals, charges batteries and changes tires — and we run a store inside our pro shop, so there’s merchandising, inventory marketing and displays.

“We have a golf cart fleet, so I run a car rental company, basically, and obviously, the most important is the golf operation itself.”

The operation was established in 1991 on the Monocacy River, about 2 miles from downtown Frederick. Peterson believes Clustered Spires offers everything a golfer could want.

“Top of the list, we pride ourselves on being a great value,” he says. “We try to make our price reasonable to city residents as well as everybody else, and you’re getting bang for your buck because we have such a nice course.”

Peterson is devoted to two aspects of the Clustered Spires experience — getting juniors into the game and providing adaptive golf programs to veterans.

“They don’t have to pay at all, the PGA covers everything for our great wounded warriors and soldiers.”

Adaptive golf, he explains, allows golfers with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, artificial limbs and wheelchair needs to get on the course and play.

Peterson remembers vividly how he “fell in love with” golf on an easily accessible, affordable public course, and it’s his goal to provide a similarly positive experience to everyone who comes to Clustered Spires.

“I’m very passionate about it,” he says. “People say, ‘We can tell you love your job, Scott!’ “It’s great when you hear that.”

“When people get hurt, they feel completely lost,” explains Matthew Engler, one of four attorneys working in the Frederick office. “We step in to bring order, to offer assistance, advice and counsel.”

The practice works in the areas of personal Injury, medical malpractice, workers’ compensation, workplace injury, railroad accidents and accidents involving cars, trucks and motorcycles.

Cucina Massi

W

hen Cucina Massi opened in Downtown Frederick, replacing longtime neighborhood favorite Nido’s Little Italy Ristorante, Cucina Massi kept one familiar item on the menu — Nido’s original white pizza.

“The community loved that pizza,” recalls Lianne DeLawter, who stayed on to become the general manager of Cucina Massi when it opened in 2020.

“Now it’s one of our No. 1 best sellers.”

Owner and head chef Massimo Liberatore is part of a long line of restauranteurs.

His grandparents were from Palena, Italy, and after the war they went to Argentina. His dad, Dante, Liberatore, was born there and the family migrated to Baltimore when he was 7 years old.

The Liberatore brothers started their restaurant career in Baltimore’s Little Italy, and Massimo grew up deeply immersed in Italian cuisine.

“Most of my experience comes through spending time cooking with my mom and dad and grandparents,” he says. “I’m not formally trained, it’s just something I love to do.”

You’ll find Liberatore in the back of house at Cucina Massi, turning the family recipes he grew up with, such as Cappellini Caprese and Penne Black & Bleu, into Frederick favorites.

“We have a constant stream of regulars,” he says.

“Familiar faces we see three times a week — and we’re only open five days, so that’s a lot!”

“People like coming in,” DeLawter adds. “They like a family-owned restaurant, they like the eclecticness of it, this historic house that’s been renovated into a beautiful restaurant. And they like our patio!”

DeLawter calls the patio “an oasis in Downtown Frederick, off the street and hidden,” and says some customers don’t want the word to get out about it “because they always want to get a seat.”

And as Frederick continues to grow as a dining destination, spots on the patio and inside continue to fill.

“It’s a great challenge to have,” says Liberatore.

“It makes us constantly reinvent ourselves and prove ourselves.”

DeLawter loves the idea, too.

“The more people come to Frederick for the food,” she says, “the more customers for everyone!”

Main Street Middletown

S

ince 2011, executive director Becky Axilbund has led Main Street Middletown, MD Inc., a nonprofit whose mission is to enhance the downtown’s economic vitality through highlighting unique places and experiences.

Axilbund says that being a national and state accredited Main Street community means that Middletown puts an emphasis on local ownership, historic architecture and maintaining a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly downtown.

Axilbund works with an all-volunteer Board of Directors to add value to downtown Middletown via beautification efforts — such as recent projects with public art and decorative planters. Marketing efforts help promote the community and organize events like Scarecrows March Down Main Street; and strategies focused on supporting and sustaining local businesses.

One particularly special project has been the purchase and rehabilitation of 19 W. Main St., also known as the former Bussard Barbershop. Though visitors to the space can no longer get a shave and haircut, they can get so much more.

The historic space has been transformed into the Middletown Welcome Center. At the Welcome Center visitors can begin a journey through 258-year-old Middletown, learning about Civil War history, admiring the town’s historic architecture and hitting local spots.

The Dapper DJs

F

rederick’s Dapper DJs turn the tables (and turn back time) to jazz up events with vintage vibes.

Alex Sincevich understands that when it comes to hosting a wedding, milestone birthday or anniversary party, or corporate event, “the sum is more than the parts.” A self-described tinkerer who once fixed the spring motor on his mom’s turntable to listen to Christmas records “for nostalgia’s sake,” Sincevich formed Dapper DJs in 2011 to help hosts and guests be part of an event to remember.

“We’re polished, put together, with a certain amount of sophistication, I suppose,” says Sincevich, who credits his wife for adding the “dapper” element to the DJ skills he’s been perfecting since he started spinning at age 16 for friends’ basement and treehouse parties. “A lot of DJs out there can’t bring that to the table.”

What Sincevich and his roster of vintage-clad emcees offer is an experience that elevates wedding receptions and parties by introducing a theme that everyone can enjoy together.

A modern couple with retro taste might request vintage records for a personalized soundtrack. Sometimes, it becomes a “BYOV” event: Bring Your Own Vinyl.

“There’s definitely some vinyl-heads who say, ‘Oh, man, these guys are the bees knees!’” Sincevich laughs.

The Dapper DJs have the vintage vinyl covered, choosing classics for cocktail hour and swinging jazz from the big band days to get the hoofers hopping.

The Dapper DJs can round out the party with modern music, too.

“We can seamlessly transition from one genre to the next while keeping the beat, boots and cats,” says Sincevich. “Technology lets us maintain the vintage vibe — and with a flick of a switch, we go from vinyl to digital.”

It’s all part of creating the theme and maintaining the dream for the people throwing the party.

“We play what the client wants,” Sincevich says. “Jazz lovers definitely gravitate toward us, but we’re here to represent the client musically.”

And sartorially: Enlisting the spin skills of a Dapper DJ means getting a nattily dressed throwback to the golden age of sharp suits, bow ties, and clothing with panache.

“We’re hospitality-minded,” says Sincevich. “It’s about showing everybody a great time on behalf of the people who hired us. We’re here to create an experience.”

If you live in Frederick, you’ve likely seen his Dino Alley mural, iconic doodles, or even attended one of his live sketch sessions. His creative and unusual style has become part of Frederick’s creative landscape, and we’re honored to feature his work on this year’s cover. Goodloe Byron

Y

ou could call Goodloe Byron an accidental artist.

“I don’t see myself as a ‘commercial artist’ or a ‘fine artist,’” he says. “I just sort of try to be myself.”

Byron — a celebrated painter, muralist, illustrator, musician, and designer in Frederick — has made a living with his kooky takes on creatures, pets and people.

His family includes a legacy of influential Congressional representatives, including his grandfather and namesake Goodloe Byron, and grandmother Beverly Byron. But growing up in rural Frederick he was also surrounded by artists, especially absorbing the artistic environment his mom, Jane, created.

“I started taking art classes in high school,” he remembers. “And when I first started to paint I would go to the library and grab books of paintings and spend hours and hours looking through them. Art history is something I know well, but art technique? I have no idea what I’m doing, much to my chagrin.”

And yet, a demand for his work began, and has grown over time.

“I started drawing my dog all the time,” he remembers.

“And then people would say, ‘Draw my dog!’

In 2017, Byron created a colorful and cartoonish 150-foot mural, depicting Maryland’s state dinosaur on the wall behind Brewer’s Alley Restaurant & Brewery on Market Street in Frederick. And in 2019 Byron’s “Traincharmachameleon,” was chosen in a Silver Spring mural contest to deck a wall there celebrating the arrival of Purple Line trains.

“As far as murals go, I just look around for mural opportunities. But people, when they’re opening up breweries or restaurants, they’ll just tell me to come paint it. I don’t necessarily know where they got my email address,” he says.

Byron channels everything he sees into art, putting a unique, whimsical spin on it.

“I like to take inspiration from my immediate life,” he explains. “My wife, Emily, and I just had a daughter — she’s great! I was just figuring out how to draw her: it’s tricky, because she’s super cute, and everything I draw tends to be ugly or kind of kooky.”
