and so it is said‌

This past winter, we felt chilling cold, and witnessed record snowfall. Spring had us measuring rainfall and fearing flood stage. Now...we're already experiencing near record high temperatures! That's what is so great about Frederick County, the seasons change with great drama. Just when you've had enough of one, another is just around the corner. With those changing seasons come new opportunities for fun. Summer in Frederick County is when things really get swingin'. Festivals, special events, longer shopping hours, patio dining, and more festivals. There quite literally is something for everyone...and usually on the same street. No one gets boxed in! Just recently during a family visit, I dropped my dad at the Civil War Medicine Museum, where he was thrilled to immerse himself in a special program about dentistry during the Civil War, while my mom and I managed some fruitful shopping. When it's time to grab a bite for lunch, no problem. The myriad of options assure that my vegetarian mom and my crabcake lovin' dad are both gastronomically content. Whether the heat finds you seeking cool shelter in our diverse and eclectic shops and restaurants, or sitting in the stands cheering for the Keys players, Frederick County is the perfect place to be for the summer.

SECTIONSAVOR HEADER! iT!

Words by Rosa Garcia

I know what you may be thinking—not another article on eating gluten-free! I get it; with all the recent media attention you may be a little skeptical. But there is more to the story than a run of the mill fad diet. For those with non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or who have celiacs disease, gluten-free is their prescription.

For many, that involves very strict dietary restrictions, making eating out close to an impossibility. Why? Because the consumption of gluten, the protein found in wheat, barley, rye and some oats, is a prevalent ingredient in many foods and can cause a harmful digestive reaction that sometimes lasts for days or longer. Don’t fret, my gluten-free friends, dining away from home is getting safer and these restaurants, and bakery, are taking the extra steps to welcome you as their guests.

SAVOR iT! Imagine sinking your teeth into a moist, decadent chocolate caramel cupcake topped with fluffy vanilla frosting and a hint of pretzel crunch for texture. Or the fragrant aroma of a rustic loaf of freshly baked pumpkin bread. Are your taste buds screaming for a bite? If so, your place is A Better Choice Bakery. Nestled between the Appalachian Mountains and the Potomac River, in Brunswick, A Better Choice Bakery is unique because it’s the only dedicated gluten and dairy-free facility in Frederick County. This is music to the ears for those with sensitivity to gluten. The very thought of eating or smelling anything that is made traditionally with wheat flour resurrects vivid memories of bloating, gassiness, itchy skin, fatigue or worse. “I want people to know they are safe when they come to my bakery,” said Beth Johnson, the bakery’s owner. “In addition to being gluten-free, all of my baked goods are made with non-GMO flours, are free of preservatives, diary-free, dyefree and are vegan-friendly.” “Plus, my pumpkin bread is the bomb,” she added. That’s not all, there is also a nut-free manufacturing facility on-site, so if you also have a nut allergy, measures have been developed to avoid crosscontamination. Food allergies are scary and trusting someone to keep you safe can involve a leap of faith. There are very few opportunities to throw caution to the wind, but after visiting A Better Choice Bakery, you can go for it! The food is delicious and Beth guarantees wheat, barley, rye and oats have never crossed the threshold. Located on Bentz Street in Downtown Frederick, The Raw Bar & Grill reopened in December. The restaurant is under new ownership, and so is the kitchen. Master Chef Penny Rundatz has big plans and is starting by kicking off a gluten-free dinner and craft cider pairing event this summer. The dinner will consist of five gourmet, gluten-free courses paired with local craft ciders provided by Distillery Lane Ciderworks. “One of my best customers has celiac disease,” Chef Penny said. “I take every measure to make sure she doesn’t get sick. She eats here all the time because she knows I will take care of her.” If you are looking for a night out on the town or a casual afternoon meal filled with fresh seafood choices, then you have to give The Raw Bar a shot. Chef Penny’s gluten-free dark chocolate raspberry cake with orange sauce alone is enough to get anyone through the door. It isn’t a certified gluten-free

SAVOR iT! establishment, but methods are enforced to help reduce cross-contamination, such as sterilizing pans, bowls, utensils and containers. Additionally, the kitchen has a selected fryer for gluten-free foods only. All diners with food allergies are greeted by Chef Penny and are taken through the menu to help promote a confident dining experience. Chef Penny and owners Lee and Candy Rios and Dave and Lynn Cogott personally invite you to stop by and see the changes for yourself. “We are 100 percent focused on customer service, great fresh food and a good time,” Cogott said. Get ready to be greeted by lively music, several flat screen TVs and a jovial host when dining at Glory Days Grill. Its All-American sport bar theme offers an easygoing environment, but is backed by expert efficiency when it comes to gluten-free diners. Freely order from a dedicated gluten-free menu and have your meal cooked in a certified gluten-free kitchen. “When someone orders from our gluten-free menu, we make sure it doesn’t slow down the process, said Mark Ingle, Glory Days Grill restaurant coach for Frederick. “We want our patrons to feel comfortable, confident and regular. Confident and comfortable is an understatement. Be assured that each meal is treated with careful hands and made with gluten-free butters and seasonings, then garnished by management only. Immediately covered upon completion, meals are delivered right away to reduce the chances of contamination. The beauty of the entire process is you will never feel out of place or different than other guests. Every measure is taken back-of-house to make sure your experience is pleasurable, but even more importantly, safe. While a hearse and skeletons aren't usually the first things that come to mind when you hear the word bakery, at Cakes To Die For, it's just business as usual. Executive Cake Decorator and owner Lucie Shelton created Cakes To Die For in 2010 at the age of 16. After finishing high school as well as the Baking and Pastry Program at Johnson and Wales University in Charlotte, N.C., Lucie returned to Frederick and opened her long dreamt of bakery in March 2014. Until very recently, I had never heard of a dรถner or a dรถner box. If put on the spot, I may have guessed a dรถner was perhaps something you rode in, or maybe wore on your head. And I would have been deliciously wrong. Boy, did I not know what I was missing! WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

SUMMER 2014

SAVOR iT!

Thanks to the new German/Turkish casual restaurant Döner Bistro, opened along Downtown Frederick’s Carroll Creek Promenade, I now know that a döner is most definitely something you eat. In fact, it’s something you eat again and again and again. I have now treated myself to a döner box on three separate occasions, and you can bet I will be back for more. So, for the uninitiated, what exactly is a döner (and a döner box)? Well, a döner is a Turkish-German version of the popular Greek gyro. A soft, flavorful warm flatbread is stuffed with freshly sliced lean beef or chicken from the in-house rotisserie along with the bistro’s signature sweet ’n sour coleslaw, tomato-cucumber mix and onions, and topped with a creamy garlic-yogurt sauce with fresh cucumbers (tzatziki sauce). And a döner box is not a box at all. It is a large tub filled with so many layers of flavor, you think you’re never going to get to the bottom! The first layer is the gloriously garlicy tzatziki sauce, followed by fresh-cut salty pommes (french fries), followed by your choice of beef or chicken or both (go for both – you won’t regret it!), followed by more sauce, followed by more fries, followed by more meat, followed by more sauce! The only word for this combination is yum. But this place is not only about döners! A full line of delicious German sausages is also on the menu. Try a German Bratwurst, a pork sausage in the North German style, naked or with German Kühne mustard in a “sauerkraut-free environment.” Or, grab a plate of a proletarian cult dish that has its own museum in Berlin! The Currywurst has fans worldwide and can consist of uncountable styles of WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

sausage, including beef, white, or bratwurst and have a variety of sauces on top from curry powder to tomato sauce and can be mild, hot, or extremely hot, depending on who’s serving it. The bistro offers two versions: slices of beef sausages or pork sausages (Bratwurst), both topped with warm curry ketchup. Add brötchen (a small, crusty German roll) or pommes if you wish. Another option is the ever-popular wiener schnitzel, an Imbiss style fried veil cutlet, served on a sandwich for a quick version of traditional German “sit down flavor.” And what would a traditional German meal be without the proper liquid refreshment – bier (beer)?! Döner’s got four beers on tap, including Warsteiner Pilsener (full-bodied, clean and crisp), Veltins Pilsener (golden bodied, well balanced note of malt and hops), Weihenstephaner Wheat Beer (from the oldest brewery in the world founded in 1040 AD), and Köstritzer Black Lager (smooth and malty). Also available is a wide assortment of bottled beers, wine by the glass, bottle, or half bottle, as well as soft drinks. Döner Bistro has three area locations: one in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C., one in Leesburg, Va., and the most recent branch, which opened on Frederick’s Carroll Creek. The Frederick bistro replaced a Five Guys Burger & Fries location, and offers a great alternative to an easy, delicious, inexpensive dinner in a casual environment. Simply order at the counter, then choose a seat inside among the vibrant orangeyellow-brown décor, or sit outside and enjoy a great view of the creek. Whether you’ve never been to Germany, or are yearning for a trip back, Döner Bistro serves a first-class ticket to experiencing the flavors and a little bit of the quirky culture of that country, right here in Frederick.

One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever received about meditation is to always be clear about why you are doing it. Why are you interested? What would you like to accomplish? How quickly do you expect to get there?

At 14 years old I completed my first meditation training and it totally changed the trajectory of my life. Relatively disinterested in religion, and mostly cynical about the purpose of life I specifically focused on only that which could be seen or proven by modern science. My staunch teenage beliefs would slowly crumble under the weight of something I was taught to simply help me focus better in school – meditation. The first time I sat down to meditate the only thing I could think about the entire time was, “This is the dumbest idea ever.” I was sitting on my aunt’s couch wondering when it would be over so I could get back to playing video games and eating Frosted Flakes (no wonder I was having trouble keeping up with the geniuses).

LEARN iT! After a few weeks of this, though, something switched. While I was sitting there, classical music on in the background and glasses with flashing dots over my face to “help the meditation, I noticed that for once I was not thinking about being somewhere else. I experienced a completely joyful contentment by just sitting there amidst all of those thoughts. And when it was time to stop, I was actually disappointed! Now, there were many times during the following few weeks that I was back to thinking about video games and Frosted Flakes, but that experience of contentment was something I could never forget. What it meant I was not sure. But I did know something had changed. I was actually interested in what this state of mind was all about; I was meditating to feel good. It is interesting how one act can influence the trajectory of a life. During the next 10 years, a combination of school, sports, college parties and restaurant work became my primary focus, but there was an underlying, nagging interest in the mystery of life that just would not go

LEARN iT! away. So much so that a pre-med degree became the precursor for my entry into an acupuncture program, much to the chagrin of almost everyone who knew me. It was this program which ultimately led me to a meditation teacher who set an expectation of seriousness in order to explore the profound terrain of one’s own connection to life, to people, to God. At this point I found myself in a position I never expected to reside in: I was meditating to find God. From the first time I meditated until that moment, there were 3 distinct reasons for meditation: • Focus & Memory • Feeling Peaceful • Spiritual Connection Each step of the way, the earlier reasons I had set for meditation were not left behind, but rather they were included as part of an expanded sense of what it means to benefit from meditation. Today, meditation continues to offer many benefits to me. Above all, meditation is about love. I know, I know, what a cliché, but it’s true, in my experience. Meditation is a quiet position, a solitary position, just you, sitting still, facing into all of those crazy thoughts that keep coming! Yet somehow, this process of sitting still, letting go of everything you need to do, worry about, plan, etc., creates a space for what we as humans seem to be the most compelled by and simultaneously the most afraid of; deep human connection.

LEARN iT! Through the process of dropping the fortress we build around ourselves, the limits we put on ourselves dissolve, and who we really are, what is truly most important to us, can come forth. Slowly at first, like a seedling popping up from the soil, simultaneously sending roots farther down into the earth as it lifts up toward the sky, and then faster, experiencing more of life than the seedling could have ever dreamed possible. I am meditating to expand what I can see. I am meditating to expand what I can give. I am meditating to expand love. But feel free to just sit still, be quiet and start with some simple stress relief! We can all use some of that.

“Take me out to the ball game… buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack… and let me root, root, root for the home team.” Most of us know the words to Jack Norworth’s classic song from 1908, sung in baseball stadiums across the country. And Frederick has the wonderful Frederick Keys as our home team, with plenty of reasons to root for them.

The Frederick Keys team is, of course, named for Francis Scott Key, who authored our National Anthem, “The StarSpangled Banner,” 200 years ago this September, and who is buried in our fair city. In addition to the peanuts, Cracker Jack, popcorn, hot dogs or other concessions, catching a Frederick Keys game is a wonderful experience. In fact, it is one of the best WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

ViSiT iT! entertainment values in the city. While enjoying the food at America’s favorite pastime, patrons can also enjoy other unique activities and special theme events on any given night. But the real highlight is the opportunity to catch up-and-coming players whose goal and dream is to play in the major leagues. The Frederick Keys is a Single A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The team was founded in 1989 when then-Frederick Mayor Ron Young and some business leaders decided they wanted to have a minor league team play in the city. The Keys’ first season was played at McCurdy Field and the team moved to its current location at Harry Grove Stadium the following year, in 1990. The Keys have been affiliated with the Orioles since day one. In fact, of its six different farm teams, the Keys are the longest-standing Orioles affiliate. For those who enjoy watching the O’s play, many of the names on today’s roster would sound familiar as several players who played in Frederick first — Brian Matusz, Dylan Bundy, Manny Machado, Zach Britton, Matt Wieters and Nick Markakis. “We’re in a very fertile time period with the Keys sending impact players to the Orioles,” said Frederick Keys General Manager Dave Ziedelis. That hasn’t always been the case. Early on, several Keys players went on to play at the highest level, then came somewhat of a dry spell. The reality is that only 1 in 25 players have a shot at getting to the majors. Back in 1989, Ben McDonald’s debut in Frederick was a pretty big deal. After all, he was the Orioles No. 1 pick and the overall No. 1 pick in the draft. And for local residents, he was the first Keys player to make it to the big leagues, donning an O’s uniform later that year (September). Several others from the inaugural Keys season, including David Segui, Anthony Telford, Francisco de la Rosa and Luis Mercedes went on to play for the Birds. And there are some former Keys players that wore the uniforms of other teams at the major league level. For example, Ricky Gutierrez made his debut with the Padres; Pete Rose, Jr. for the Reds; and Jayson Werth for the Blue Jays (and now a major player for the Nationals). Today, it is exciting to make the trek to Camden Yards and see some of the players who once played

ViSiT iT! right here in Frederick. Matt Wieters, the Orioles starting catcher, played in Frederick during the 2008 season. “Frederick was a great town to play ball in. The fans embraced and supported the team and it felt like we had great crowds there every night,” he said. Wieters made his first start for the O’s on May 29, 2009 In 2009, two top pitchers played at Harry Grove Stadium. Zac Britton, a lefthander, was named by Baseball America as the third-best prospect in the Orioles system. He would be named to the Carolina League mid-season All-Star team and the Carolina League post-season All-Star team and later be named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Year. He would make his Orioles debut a few years later, on April 3, 2011. Another leftie, Brian Matusz, was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round (4th pick overall) of the 2008 amateur draft and play in Frederick in 2009. His stint in the city was brief, just a couple months, before moving up. Frederick was his first city playing minor league baseball. “This is where I learned the minor league lifestyle,” he said. “It is a unique ball park with a minor league historic feel.” And of course there’s Many Machado who played for the Keys in 2011. A versatile player, he managed at shortstop as well as in the outfield, and now plays at third base for the Orioles, making his debut with that team in August 2012. This Gold Glove winner and MLB All-Star returned to Frederick in April during a rehabilitation stint. Seeing him play here on his way up and then getting to see him play here again was a real treat for Frederick residents “It was the biggest April weekend we have had in years,” Ziedelis said. And of course there are today’s Keys players. A number of them are top Orioles prospects. One is Branden Kline, a Frederick native. According to the pitcher, playing in Frederick is a great advantage. So, what are you waiting for? Take in the sights, sounds, and smells of a Frederick Keys game during their next home stint. Catch some great baseball (the Keys have won three divisional championships) and watch some of the boys of summer who will be playing for the Orioles or other teams in the future WWW.FiNDiTFREDERiCK.COM

SUMMER 2014

ViSiT iT!

Once a year, residents of a small city in the southwestern corner of Frederick County come out to proudly celebrate their shared heritage, and invite others to join them. Brunswick’s Railroad Days is set for October 4-5.

Brunswick is particularly proud of its rich transportation heritage. Located along the Potomac River, just 45 miles from our nation’s capital, the city is also situated along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (the C&O Canal), a 184-mile waterway connecting Washington, D.C. to Cumberland, Md. Ferries once operated there, crossing the river to Virginia. The C&O was completed in Brunswick in 1834 and there were high hopes it would bring trade and create jobs in the region. However, another mode of transportation came to Brunswick that same year, which had more immediate and dramatic effects. That was the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The B&O Railroad planned a 5-mile rail yard and reportedly was the largest and busiest such railroad yard in the world, in its day. As a result, the town, then known as Berlin, became a company town with an exploding population. In 1890, the railroad renamed it Brunswick to pay tribute to the residents living there who came from Brunswick, Germany, to work on the railroad.

65

ViSiT iT!

Although the railroad isn’t as important to our nation as it once was, you can still see the engines whistling down the track in Brunswick. In addition, the city does serve as a major stop on the Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) Train line, which takes commuters in and out of the greater Washington, D.C. area each weekday. It is fitting then, that for the last 31 years, the city has hosted Brunswick Railroad Days. This annual fall festival is the city’s largest event, attracting about 10,000 visitors to the downtown area in one weekend. The 2014 event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on both Saturday and Sunday. In addition to the traditional festival offerings, such as food, arts and crafts, and live music, the main attraction is a scenic train ride offered by MARC exclusively for the event. Last year, tickets sold out for the first time in the festival’s history. This is a great festival that pays homage to Frederick County’s past. While at the festival, be sure to visit the Brunswick Heritage Museum, which tells the stories of the railroaders and their families in the early 1900s and houses one of the largest model train layouts on the east coast. The Brunswick City Council also plans to have a new wooden caboose, which once ran on the B&O rail line, permanently placed at the railroad park near the train station. For more information, including a listing of activities and schedule of events, visit www.brunswickmd. gov/railroaddays.

Words by Ty Unglebower

MaryLynn Hinde admits that, until recently, she and her husband, Ed, didn’t realize there were any homeless students within the Frederick County Public Schools system. A heartbreaking chain of events enlightened them on the subject in November 2013.

73

SHARE iT! At that time, Zoe Carson, homeless coordinator for Frederick County Public Schools, contacted the Hindes about a boy who had been wearing only flip flops to school during the harsh Maryland winter. His teacher had done some investigating. “It turned out that those were his only shoes and that he was essentially homeless and without parental involvement,” MaryLynn Hinde said. And so, both she and her husband made announcements on their respective Facebook pages, reaching out to friends and acquaintances for any help they could get for the child. Almost right away came promises of shoes, clothes, food, money and any number of other items for the child. And as the Hindes took in the donations, they also took in information about the homeless student population in Frederick County Public Schools. What they learned shocked them; there were about 675 homeless students within the system. (As of this writing, the number is more than 700.) Moved by what she considered one of the “best-kept secrets of Frederick County”, Hinde began to organize the volunteers that had rallied around the young student without shoes. The result was a Facebook page dedicated to the mission

74

SUMMER 2014

SHARE iT! of helping other local homeless students. They called themselves the Student Homeless Initiative Partnership (SHIP). The Facebook page now has more than 1,200 members, and SHIP has since become a full-fledged registered nonprofit organization, partnered with Frederick County Public Schools. Though SHIP is now more organized and involves many more people than it did in its early days, the process of fulfilling needs for a case remain much the same as they were when the Hindes first went to Facebook to ask for help. SHIP will receive word of a homeless student with specific needs, and will send out an alert on the Facebook page. Once the response comes in, SHIP contacts the coordinator at that student’s school, who then works with SHIP to take in the items, and assure they reach the student in need. In addition, in order to connect homeless students with those willing and able to provide specific meals for them, SHIP makes extensive use of TakeThemAMeal.com, a national website and database that coordinates volunteer efforts to bring specific meals to those in need.

75

SHARE iT!

Though it has only happened under a few special circumstances so far, SHIP has even secured temporary shelter for homeless families by working with local hotels and other domiciles. This, Hinde admits, is not ideal, but she believes the Frederick County year-round emergency shelter will pick up the slack in this regard once it opens in July 2014. The fact that the organization has grown from a few people conversing on Facebook to a nonprofit partner of Frederick County Public Schools in less than a year is a source of great pride for Hinde, who called local community response “exceptional.” “Our community has proven time and again that they will do whatever it takes to provide for a child in need,” she told me. It’s clear the SHIP has changed and probably even saved lives in the county in the last year. No one organization can solve the entire problem, however, and I wanted to know what other things Hinde thought could be done locally to address the issues of homelessness, and poverty in general. She had a thorough list of issues that she would like to see addressed to get to the root of the problem.

“True working wages, affordable housing, working to close the achievement gap in our educational system, job skills and training, rezoning particular areas so that we can locate temporary housing…” The crisis of student homelessness and poverty doesn’t stop at the county border, of course, and Hinde hopes that one day the model on which SHIP operates will be adopted in neighboring areas that have an even larger population of homeless students within their school system, places such as Montgomery County, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. For now, however, the Hindes and the 1,200 volunteers (and counting) that do the work of SHIP are committed to at least eliminating the problem in Frederick County some day, with the help of the community. “We’re talking about children,” Hinde said, “those most vulnerable and affected.” www.facebook.com/groups/543515775737758/ shipfrederick@gmail.com 240-415-8971
