Letter from the Chairman

Well, it has been a busy summer in East Hunsbury, with more to come before the end of the year, so calendars at the ready. For those who don’t have this to hand, I will fill you in on what has been happening while you get your paper (remember a pen as well) or electronic version.

During the summer, several activities took place around East Hunsbury, including the first Theatre in the Park event, which, despite the weather, attracted a good attendance to see James and the Giant Peach. A few weeks later, in similar weather, we hosted an event we’ve held before, Brass in the Park, which is always well attended by a good mix of ages. The band played a variety of songs from different eras—some people even danced!

For the children of East Hunsbury, there were two new activities this summer. First, the Breakfast Club was held at the library and was so successful that it will be repeated during the October half-term holiday and beyond.

Second, we arranged for the MK Play Association to host two activity afternoons where over 80 children enjoyed the Messy & Imaginative Play Van on one day and the Risky Play Van on the other. The feedback from this was very positive, and it’s an event we look forward to repeating next year.

That should be enough time (those who were away and missed the above can catch up later), so pens/ fingers at the ready—here are the important dates.

Sunday, 10th November, is Remembrance Sunday, and as in previous years, we will hold our own (non-religious) service in Grangewood Park. This year, children from all three schools (EHPS, Simon De Senlis, and Wootton Park) will be in attendance.

The service starts at 10:45 am, so please arrive in good time. Hopefully, this year the rain will not make an appearance. If you are a knitter

or crocheter, please see the poppy pattern on our website and get knitting or crocheting!

Saturday, 30th November, is the date of the Hunsbury Festive Fair, where there will be various stalls, school choirs (they were very good last year), and a WI pop-up café. We will also switch on the lights, and if Santa is not too busy, he will make a flying visit to say hello to the children. The fun starts at 11:00 am, with the light switch-on at 4:30 pm.

The week beginning 16th December will be the Christmas Lights Competition. As in previous years, we will be presenting prizes for the best light display. This year, it will be slightly different, as there will be one prize for the best house and a separate prize for the best front garden display. Councillors will be walking the streets that week to make a decision on the winners, so don’t be alarmed if we knock on your door. Last year, the houses and gardens were, in some cases, spectacular, but we can always do better.

I have decided not to bore you with admin-type stuff this time, so it just remains for myself and everyone at East Hunsbury Parish Council to wish you all a happy festive holiday!

Meet your new Councillors!

Councillor Alison Mahoney

I moved from Canada to East Hunsbury in 2021 with my husband, 3 children and 2 dogs. We fell in love, straight away, with the walking paths, parks and just how green everything was. We loved how there was a post office, surgery, shopping centre, leisure centre and restaurant, all within walking distance. After three years in the neighbourhood, we are settled, we feel safe, we have a great community; this now feels like home. In my spare time, I am an avid cyclist and runner and get by on my swims to make me a triathlete. My kids play hockey, football and rugby locally and we frequent the golf course and the Northampton bike park. After a 20+ years in busy corporate life, I’ve taken a different path since moving to the UK and am excited to be working with the Parish on ways to continue building our community to be a great place to live, work and play.

I look forward to being an active member of the Parish Council.

East Hunsbury Parish Council

Councillor Daniel Soan

I am delighted to be joining East Hunsbury Parish Council and serving the local community.

I am an IT Manager by profession and started my career as a trainee in Local Government here in Northampton. It gave me a great understanding of how our public services work. In the past I have served as a School Governor and a volunteer at Northampton General Hospital.

My hope is that I will be able to draw on all of this experience to support the aims and objectives of East Hunsbury Parish Council particularly through my membership of the resources committee and the parks and open spaces committee.

After the wettest September on record in Northamptonshire the ‘mud’ has returned to the field footpaths of Northamptonshire much earlier this year which is a shame as autumn is one of the best times to explore our beautiful countryside. Hopefully October will be better and some early frost will help dry things out. Does this wet weather mean we have to stop exploring Northamptonshire? Absolutely not and on my website there are many hard surface routes under the ‘Accessibility / Disability’ heading, but also don’t forget our wonderful Town and Village Walks – there are 29 walks on there, all free to access!

And I just don’t give you directions… I tell you lots of interesting information and maybe show you

The ‘Needs to Know’

Wollaston Village Walk: “Who are you…”

Distance: 2 miles (3.22km)

Time to walk: Just over 1 hour

Difficulty: Easy & all on hard paths so an ideal village walk for all seasons

Parking: We parked on road outside the Wollaston Inn near The Grove

Public toilets: The Wollaston Inn

a few things in those villages that you may have walked past many times without knowing they were there.

So this edition’s walk is a short 2 mile stroll looking at beautiful Wollaston, which even has its own Green Plaque Trail.

Noted for its famous ‘scallop shell’ lacemaking cottage industry in the 17th century, it later gained worldwide notoriety for Dr Marten’s boots. Close by too is the wonderful common ownership business, the Scott Bader Commonweath, founded by Quaker, Ernest Bader.

Not only that but The Wollaston Inn (previously The Nags Head) became a haven for famous bands playing there such as Rod Stewart and The Faces, U2, The Who and Free to name just a few.

See the spot where the daily stage coach called in on its way from Wellingborough to London from 1776. It stopped in 1845 when the railway arrived in Wellingborough.

Don’t forget to visit St Mary’s Church where there’s evidence of burials dating back to Saxon times. Today in the churchyard you’ll find a memorial to two Wollaston men who went down with the Titanic.

And finally… don’t forget to have your picture taken with the most stolen street sign in Northamptonshire… wink, wink.

Simon de Senlis School Leaders are making their mark

As the new academic year has started, one of our annual traditions is to elect class leaders from each class across the school. Children have been given the opportunity to apply to be one of a range of leaders in each class. These include- School Council, Eco Ambassador, Maths Champion, Reading Ambassador, Outdoor Learning, Play Leaders and Well-being Leaders. There has been a thrill of excitement as the children produce their reasons for why they will make a difference as a leader and via individual presentations, children have shared their ideas and vision as to why they should be chosen to represent their class. After listening carefully, and questioning for further information, the children voted for their representatives. The elected teams will all now meet on a regular basis to make change across the school. Some of last year’s impact included developments in the playground, changes to school meals, finding ways to save energy, raising money for charities, improving the school library and making decisions

It was wonderful to see the children with happy faces and a spring in their step when they came from the summer break

about visitors and trips. This year, we know our amazing leaders will continue to have a positive impact on the school and the wider community. We have been asked to take part in discussions about initiatives to reduce flooding in the local area which the Eco Ambassadors will be part of. The further development of books and the library will be taken on by our Reading Ambassadors, our Maths Leaders are excited about arranging visits from maths skills workshops and our School Councillors will be inviting the Mayor to school for their annual visit. Of course, many, many more exciting things will be organised and arranged by our leaders.

Our Year 6 pupils are currently writing their speeches to hopefully be elected as the whole school House Captains, Vice House Captains and Sports Leaders. Their ideas and their vision for the pupils, school and community are outstanding and it is going to be a very difficult decision for the children to make when voting for these inspirational leaders.

In total, we have 124 leaders across school, all of whom we are so proud of and all of whom make an ongoing impact to the school and community. As an inspirational person once said- “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. Leadership is not a position or a title, it is an action and an example.” Children at Simon de Senlis demonstrate these leadership values and through their ideas and actions, they continue to make lasting change for all.

As you can see, the start to the academic year has again been full of success within all areas of the curriculum. The children have started the year with smiles on their faces and a bounce in their step and we all know that it is going to be another outstanding year at Simon de Senlis.

The new school year has got off to a flying start with the wonderful enthusiasm of the children

English skills sit at the heart of the Wootton Park curriculum

Reading and Writing Competitions at Wootton Park School!

Reading and writing sit at the heart of our English curriculum here at Wootton Park School. From EYFS all the way through to KS5, learners are taught the value of reading and writing for pleasure. We are incredibly proud of our outstanding library and our wonderful librarians, as well as the exceptional passion of our English teachers. However, reading is not just promoted by our English Team and the library! Reading and writing are important for everybody’s educational journey for everybody. As such, the skills of reading and writing are celebrated across the school in a variety of different ways. Here is a summary of some of the current competitions that we are running to promote the love of reading and writing!

Benjamin Zephaniah: Black History Month and National Poetry Day

Thursday 3rd October marked our celebration of ‘National Poetry Day’. However, it also coincided with Black History Month – a time in our calendar where we revisit the stories of BAME heroes throughout history that deserve our attention. As a result, we are asking our students to submit entries for Birmingham City University’s Benjamin Zephaniah poetry writing competition! A beloved national treasure who appears in our English curriculum, Zephaniah was famous for his incredibly emotive and accessible poetry, often exploring contemporary issues of racism, colonialism, mental health and inequality. The title of the competition is the title of one of his poems, ‘People Need People’. The competition requires learners to submit a poem

between 5-40 lines, exploring their interpretation of the theme. So far, we have received lots of highquality submissions from all year groups exploring complex issues of wellbeing, inequality, family and friendship. All submissions will be sent though the online platform on BCU’s website by November. Best of luck to all our entries!

Inter-house Book Review Competition

In Wootton Park School, every learner is assigned to a house. The houses are named red, blue, silver and gold. Learners can earn house points in a number of ways, including: representing the school on a fixture or competition, outstanding attitude to learning within lessons, as well as going that extra mile and taking care of there peers. Additionally, we often run competitions where learners can compete for house points that contribute to the house cup. Currently, we are running an inter-house book review competition where learners are encouraged to review a book in a meaningful and creative way! Examples include video reviews, 3d dioramas, paintings and posters – the only limitation is your

imagination! Learner’s compete for house points within their form groups, and grand prizes will be awarded to the overall winners.

A Story of Success

Stories of students engaging in a culture of reading does not stop there! Towards the end of the last academic year, a Y12 student was published in a national poetry anthology, titled ‘Through Their Eyes’. The learner wrote an exceptionally passionate poem about society’s treatment of the homeless, covering the theme of the competition, ‘empathy’. Here at Wootton Park School, we believe that reading and writing are not only important to our educational journey, but our social and emotional development as well. This year, we are going to continue our promotion of reading and writing all throughout or all-through school, and hope to see more successful winners of national competitions. Watch this space!

Mr. J Charteress Curriculum Lead of English, Wootton Park School

Educating the whole child –inside and out!

Here at East Hunsbury Primary School, we are all about educating the whole child so whilst our brilliant academic results are a testament to our well taught curriculum, we also prioritise teaching the children how to be emotionally, physically and mentally healthy. We want the children to feel brilliant and know that they are brilliant in every way!

Our school mission is that we want children to leave us:

So how do we do it?

• Knowing their future choices and opportunities

• Prepared for the next stage of their educational journey and

• Equipped with the skills to be able to contribute to making a better world.

And, our school values are to be kind, work hard and believe in yourself and others. At East Hunsbury, we want to teach our children to be good humans, able to do great things for themselves and others.

Therefore, for us to achieve our mission and enable children to uphold our values we know that we have to educate not only the minds of our young people but their hearts too.

Firstly, we have 5 Education Teams which support our teaching beyond the national curriculum and one of those teams in called Health and Wellbeing. This team makes sure that the Health and Wellbeing of our whole community is top priority. The team oversees our Kindness Ambassadors. Kindness Ambassadors are children who have been carefully trained in conflict resolution, helping children across the school to negotiate and communicate with each other kindly. They are there to spot and reward kindness and they attend regular meetings and training. They are also there to support children who, for many reasons, may just need a little bit of extra kindness that day. You can spot them by their pink badges or high-viz jackets in the playground.

Outdoor learning forms a significant part of the curriculum at East Hunsbury Primary School

Mental Health First Aiders and Nest Natter!

We have 6 Mental Health and Youth Mental Health First Aiders in our school which are specifically trained adults there to support the mental health of our children and staff. Three times a week, during lunchtime, we open a central space in our school called: The Nest so that children and staff can pop by for a ‘natter’ if they need. We call it: Nest Natter and it is a wonderful opportunity for children to receive support with their mental health, friendships or simply have a natter with trained staff

Keeping up to date

We have two newsletters which are published 3 times a year.

1) Be you. Be Kind. Newsletter which is written by our Kindness Ambassadors and includes Kindness Shoutouts for staff and pupils.

2) Be you. Be Well. Newsletter for staff which includes mental health strategies, recognition and more shoutouts.

These newsletters are a great way to share important information about mental health and wellbeing but they also celebrate all of the wonderful things going on in our school, including recognising the brilliance of individuals.

Our Brilliant Curriculum

In September, we are launching our new PSHE+ C (Personal, Social, Health Education and Citizenship) curriculum which has been carefully written to meet the needs of our children and their community whilst taking into consideration this ever-changing world.

It will be based on our school values and focused on Emotional Literacy which is the direct teaching of emotions with an understanding of the behaviours they can cause (and how to manage them). It will be interwoven with mindfulness exercises, mental wellbeing activities whilst systematically teaching the children about their inner worlds and how to foster positive relationships with themselves and others.

Children will also develop their own Mental Health Toolkit which is based on the NHS 5 Ways to Wellbeing (Connect, Be active, Take notice,

Learn, Give) plus resilience. Each year children are taught a strategy for each area and by the time they leave EHPS they will have 7 strategies for each area.

Even more…

There are so many other things that we do at EHPS to support the mental health and well-being of our children and their families such as: Forest School sessions, yoga and providing our own foodbank. We are also really proud that a pupil from our school was awarded the joint winner of the Northamptonshire art project: ‘What does good mental health look like?’ competition. Their design has influenced a structure that has been made into a willow sculpture at Daventry Country Park Furthermore, we have the most amazing support provided by our dedicated and very skilled Pastoral team. They work closely with children and their families to ensure everyone gets the support they need, even beyond the school doors.

Visit our school

If you would like your child to attend a school which prioritises their happiness alongside their academics, please contact the school office on 01604 677970 to book a tour or scan this QR code to book on a new intake tour for children looking to join our reception family in September 2025.

An organisation with an ABILITY to keep communities connected

One couple’s quest to help their local community turned out to be a welcome support for residents of West Northamptonshire.

In 2018 Lynn and Nigel Hinch took early retirement and pledged to give something back to the community, so they created ABILITY and year by year the organisation has grown from strength to strength. With a passion to make a difference to the local community, ironically Lynn has just won The BBC Make A Difference Award.

After raising funds for one bus in 2018, today the fleet has 14 vehicles all serving the local community.

This year, 2024 has seen immense growth in both passenger journeys and vehicle numbers as we endeavour to reach more areas, taking people to a range of destinations including shops, towns (both local and further afield), out of town retail parks and tourist attractions. Additional vehicles have also given a boost to the local

economy with the creation of further employment opportunities, We now also offer a car service to medical appointments and other destinations.

Lynn quoted, “we are proud to have created such a worthwhile and rewarding organisation, our service is very easy to use, very reliable and very friendly”.

The success of ABILITY is as a result of being supported by a great team; the office staff and drivers are very supportive.

If you need transport, remember our name ABILITY, don’t struggle with your shopping, we can help by taking you to the door of the supermarket and on your return, we stow the shopping in the rear of the bus!

Fancy a day out? Then venture out on a day trip to Waddesdon Manor, Rushden Lakes, Oxford, Thame, Beckworth Emporium or even a trip to the theatre or a pub lunch! Come and join us there’s a seat waiting for you!

Bluebird Care looks to build on its foundations of care provision

In October 2023, Bluebird Care (West Northants) opened a satellite office in Northampton as part of its Milton Keynes operation. This new office was opened to meet the increasing demand for high quality home care services in the Northampton and West Northants areas. Kelly Mennim was appointed as Deputy Manager, tasked with leading the team in this new venture.

Since its opening, the Northampton office has rapidly grown, now supporting numerous customers across the region with personalized, high-quality care. Bluebird Care’s customer-centred approach and commitment to excellence have quickly earned the office a strong reputation in the local community.

Building on this success, the office is now ready to take its next major step by becoming independent of the Milton Keynes operation. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has recently approved this transition, which will enable Bluebird Care (West Northants) to operate as a stand-alone office. As part of this transition, Kelly Mennim has been appointed as the Registered Manager. Her promotion reflects her dedication and the pivotal role she has played in the office’s growth. Kelly has already spearheaded several new initiatives to enhance the community's well-being and support Bluebird Care’s customers.

One recent highlight was a fundraising event for The Alzheimer’s Society, where the team raised over £600. Kelly and her team participated in a relay between the Northampton and Milton Keynes offices, with a unique twist: they travelled part of the way on a barge supplied by Crusader Community Boating and were joined by some of their customers. This event was not only a great success but also a reflection of the close-knit relationship the team has built with their customers. Looking ahead, Kelly is also collaborating with East Hunsbury Parish Council to establish a ‘Memory Lane’ Café at the Abbey Centre. This initiative aims to provide a supportive environment for those living with dementia, their families, and caregivers.

If you are interested in receiving more information about the Memory Lane Café, please email Kelly at northampton@bluebirdcare.co.uk to register your interest.

East Hunsbury’s Parks and Open Spaces: A Year of Improvements and Long-Term Plans

Our parks and open spaces are the heart of East Hunsbury, offering both beauty and a place for residents to play, relax and come together. East Hunsbury Parish Council has been working hard to make these spaces even more enjoyable and accessible for all.

This year, we’ve focused on maintaining and enhancing our green areas. You may have noticed some of the changes already:

• Benches: We’ve replaced some old benches and added hard surfaces under others, ensuring that you have plenty of spots to sit, relax, and enjoy the views (without getting muddy feet!).

• Planters Refilled: To keep our open spaces looking vibrant, the planters around the parish have been refilled with seasonal bedding plants.

• Play Equipment Repairs: We know how important our play areas are to families, so repairs have been carried out to keep them safe and fun for children.

• Natural Flood Mitigation in Penvale Park: To address the issue of flooding, we’ve undertaken essential work in Penvale Park to improve natural flood defences, which will help protect both the park and nearby properties.

• Footbridges: We’ve replaced a worn-out footbridge in Penvale Park with a sturdy covered pipe bridge, and added non-slip surfaces to bridges in Grangewood Park.

• Gates and Fencing: A rolling programme of work to replace missing fencing and hand-gates at park entrances has begun.

Looking forward, the Parish Council has developed management plans for the parks and open spaces we own. These plans are designed to ensure that our parks are managed in the best possible way, balancing accessibility with environmental sustainability. We will continue to develop these plans, aiming to improve our green spaces year after year.

At present, the environmental maintenance of these areas is carried out by idVerde, under

a contract with West Northants Council. This agreement will remain in place until 2028, in accordance with the transfer of responsibility for the parks to the Parish Council. Our goal is to ensure that by 2028, when we take full responsibility for their care, our parks and open spaces are in the best possible condition for everyone to enjoy.

But our parks aren’t just for passing through— they’re a fantastic resource for community events and activities. From fetes to smaller events, we’re always looking for ways to use our open spaces for the benefit of residents. We encourage you to keep an eye out for future events and make the most of these beautiful areas.

Whether it’s a quiet walk, a family outing, or a community event, our parks are here for everyone to enjoy. The Parish Council will continue to invest in these spaces, ensuring they remain welcoming for all.

We want to hear from you!

The Parish Council has launched a short consultation to gather feedback from residents about our parks and open spaces. Your input will help shape the future of these vital community areas. Whether it’s suggestions for improvements, ideas for new events, or feedback on how we manage our green spaces, we value your opinion. We’d love to hear from you – complete the form opposite and drop it into the parish office, or complete online by scanning the QR code opposite.

News from King Richard Court

June started with great activity here. The building of a Nissen hut, decorating ready for a fantastic Street Tea Party. On the 4th June we held a service of remembrance for all who had been involved in the D-Day landings, led by Reverend Griff. Remembering the valour of those who served and died as well as those who survived. We remembered the tragic loss of all who died and whose families suffered for years to come. Following the service a memorial cake was cut, given by the Wreford family in memory of Mr Sidney Wreford who live in KRC, and before his retirement was a farmer, doing his bit for the war effort.

All taking part had been given an ID Card before the event. On the day, they presented it to be given a ration book, which then allowed them to get a box of food. The room was decorated with the washing hanging out, as at a street party. There was singing by Three In Accord followed with a sing along. Many people had dressed in war period clothing and military dress. Following the readings the piper played as we followed outside for the lighting of the beacon. A donation was sent from the event to the Spirit of Normandy Trust.

A coffee morning was held for the Macmillan charity funds and the sum of £462 was raised. We had an illustrated talk on Northampton Theatres which everyone found very interesting and informative.

Later in the month there was a talk about the Lancaster Bomber which crashed near Delaprė Abbey in the war.

On a lovely afternoon, a very enjoyable BBQ was held on the patio surrounded by our lovely gardens. After the BBQ there followed a music quiz causing a great deal of fun and laughter.

One family organised a Marie Curie raffle and quiz afternoon. This was as a ‘Thank You’ to the nurses who cared for a family loved one when very ill. An enjoyable afternoon was had by a large number of people. The sum of £404.67 was raised

Today we start another session of our Prevention Of Falls Class, which everyone who attends enjoys, and is led by Denise Hutchinson.

So, another summer with lots of enjoyment and a lot of work from the committee and staff, which is much appreciated.

Residents and staff dressed up for the Street Party to celebrate the 70th anniversary of D-Day
A tasty BBQ was enjoyed in the gardens during a lovely day in the summer

Danes Camp Medical Centre –getting to know you...

Located at the heart of East Hunsbury for more than 30 years, Danes Camp Medical Centre’s standard GP Practice services are well known by our patient population, however, there are other areas of health care provision such as support for Carers and Armed Forces Veterans that are perhaps less known.

Danes Camp Medical Centre is an Armed Forces Veteran Friendly Accredited Practice. The GP Practice accreditation is a programme run by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) and NHS England to recognise and support Practices in delivering the best possible care and treatment for patients who have served in the armed forces. Over 3,700 Practices have already become Veteran Friendly accredited.

Who is a veteran?

A veteran is anyone who has served for at least one day in the British Armed Forces, whether as a Regular or Reservist (previously known as the Territorial Army). Younger veterans might refer to themselves as ‘ex-forces,’ in the belief that a veteran is someone who fought in the First or Second World War. Veterans include those who were Merchant Navy seafarers or fisherman who served in a vessel used to support the UK's armed forces at any time. By being a Veteran Friendly Accredited Practice, Danes Camp Medical Centre wants to reinforce to veteran patients that they are dedicated to supporting them and hopefully making it more likely Veterans will feel comfortable to seek help when they need it. If you are registering as a new patient or at your next contact with Danes Camp Medical Centre, please let them know you are a Veteran. More information is also available at the NHS website at www.nhs.uk/armedforceshealth

Danes Camp Medical Centre can support our patient Carers in a variety of ways

Who is a carer?

An adult providing regular and substantial support to either a child or an adult who cannot manage on their own at home or if you are a Young Carer, under the age of 18 providing a substantial amount of care on a regular basis.

How can Danes Camp Medical Centre help? The staff and Clinicians can provide advice on medical conditions and treatments, by providing Carers with vaccinations being associated with risk groups ie influenza and can put you in touch with other sources of support/advice/assistance such as Northamptonshire Carers.

At registration (if you are a new patient) or at your next contact with Danes Camp Medical Centre please let them know you are a Carer – an online registration form is also on their website www.danescampsurgery.nhs.uk

The Welcome Space on Wednesdays!

The Parish activity room at Hunsbury Library 10am – 2pm

Wednesdays at the Parish Office – are slightly different to other days… In a good way!

Whilst our door is open for the community to come in, meet with us, Wednesdays sees our parish activity room transformed.

Each Wednesday, we set up the space as your own front room!

The kettle is on, the radio is on, and people can help themselves to a cuppa and a biscuit.

There are magazines and newspapers, board games and a chance to sit and chill out.

The idea was born out of Warm Spaces, which were funded by WNC, to help people during last winter. At East Hunsbury Parish Council, we now intend to keep the space open to the community throughout the summer. Thanks goes to local volunteers who help with this project.

So just pop in, meet up with friends. We are currently looking at requests from residents for using the space for smaller groups, chess club, art sessions etc...

(n.b. one Wednesday per month, we give the space to a new art group. On those days, the Welcome Area will move and be signposted in the main Library room).
