It’s time for the toads to cross the road once again!

The two lockdowns of 2020 saw Charlcombe Lane become a magnet for walkers taking their daily exercise. Now as we enter a third lockdown this lovely quiet lane has once again become a haven for those seeking fresh air and outdoor exercise. This time however, walkers, in particular those that like to walk at dusk even on a damp night, will be joined by toads, frogs and newts taking on their annual journey across the lane on their way to Charlcombe Lake, their ancient breeding site.

These little creatures have been using this exact same route for many years and have become a much loved part of the local ecosystem. We have had to get used to a lot of change in the last 12 months, so it’s good to know that some things continue as normal.

There is no stopping these lovable amphibians!

Starting on Monday 15 February, Charlcombe Lane will be closed for six weeks to all through traffic. People who live on the lane will still have access as well as delivery drivers and refuse collectors. The Lane will reopen on Sunday 28 March.

This annual closure is to ensure that the amphibians have the best chance of survival when they cross the road, and therefore can make it safely to their breeding site at the bottom of the valley. That said, migration can start earlier than the actual road closure.

In some recent years it has started as early as January, and in others has gone on until April, so the hardworking band of volunteers from Charlcombe Toad Rescue will be on standby from the end of January to patrol the lane in their quest to help as many of the migrating amphibians as possible and to reduce the number that get killed by traffic.

Charlcombe Toad Rescue has been active for over 20 years, and has saved many thousands of amphibians in that time.

Sadly because of lockdown Charlcombe Toad Rescue cannot take on any new volunteers this year. One recent and typical case is a teen we call `Jake’ whose Mum died suddenly when he was eight. He didn’t really talk or take help but gradually cut off from everyone. His secondary school found him disruptive. When he came to our Centre he was angry and felt no-one understood. We helped him in therapy to express mixed emotions about all that had happened, and last year he joined our Youth Therapy Group. He found other bereaved youngsters he feels understand what it’s like and it has helped him open up to others when he wants to, too. Jake has found his focus return and is now set to attain high level GCSEs in 2021.

Spring launch for Bath’s Clean Air Zone Bath’s Clean Air Zone is set to launch on Monday 15 March 2021 as the first charging clean air zone in England outside of London. It will not charge private cars. The Clean Air Zone was due to be switched on in November but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Bath & North East Somerset Council considered air quality, traffic levels and the impacts of COVID-19 on local businesses and the economy, before agreeing the new start date with the government. It means Bath will be the first city in England to launch a charging CAZ outside London, which has a similar ultra-low emission zone. However, the date will be monitored to account for any significant developments regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.

The council is currently contacting more than 9,000 local businesses to help them establish whether charges will apply to their vehicles, and how to access the support on offer. Drivers affected by charges are also advised to check the council’s website at www.bathnes.gov.uk/BathCAZ for a list of local exemptions and whether they might be eligible for financial support to upgrade their vehicle or fleet.

Discounts are also available for drivers of larger, higher emission motorhomes and horse-transporters (private heavy goods vehicles) who can pay £9 instead of £100 provided they register with the council.

Applications for all local exemptions and discounted vehicles opened in November.

The clean air zone will operate in the city centre 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Charges will apply to pre-euro 6/VI diesel and pre-euro 4 petrol vehicles, except private cars and motorbikes. Higher emission taxis, private hire vehicles, minibuses, LGVs and vans (including pickups and campervans) will be charged £9 a day while higher emission buses, coaches and HGVs will be charged £100 a day.

The council is now urging residents and businesses to check their vehicles to see if they’ll be charged.

ROTARY CLUB OF BATH: STILL FUND-RAISING DESPITE THE VIRUS The Rotary Club of Bath is well-known in the City for its major community fundraising events held annually. The November Fireworks and Father’s Day weekend Festival of Motoring are two popular highlights, which raise thousands for local charities.

But this year has had to be different. The Club’s 50 members have not even been able to meet weekly, as they have done without fail since their predecessors formed the first Rotary Club in Bath 100 years ago, in 1921.

The Club has already been able to make financial donations this year to worthy causes such as Dorothy House and Nova Sports, and also funded Toy Boxes for children in Bath escaping domestic violence and living in Refuge Housing.

“Like most community organisations, we’ve had to accept reality and adapt,” explains Club President, Chris Davies. ” We’ve almost all become quite proficient at Zoom meetings, even holding ones with sister Clubs overseas.

“And we’ve taken a lot of our fund-raising on-line. We are trying to raise funds by completing a virtual 3-mile line of pennies from the Guildhall to Lansdown Golf Club, where we meet. We’ve already past the Hare and Hounds pub on Lansdown Road.”

All the money raised will be donated to Bath Samaritans and Youth Connect South West, which supports disadvantaged young people in the City.

Over Christmas the Club ran its usual street collection near Bath Abbey and even though limited by restrictions, managed to collect several thousand pounds for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

“We’re not letting the virus get us too down, or stop us in our efforts to help others. The Rotary motto is ‘Service above Self’, and we’re doing out best to live up to that ideal, even in these challenging times,” said Chris.

Help save the planet!

Remote volunteering opportunities with Share and Repair Despite lockdown restrictions, charity Share and Repair always has space and a need for extra volunteers. So if you have time, skills or a willingness to help local people save money while also saving the planet, then why not join us?

Here are just three of the current ways you could help. For more volunteer opportunities, check out the Get Involved page on our website.

Repairers: We always need repairers who can fix electrical items, household items and clothing.

If you like to mend things, or to figure out how things work, then we would love to have you. Our monthly Repair Cafes are currently on hold but we continue to offer a remote repair service.

Administrators: Volunteers carry out most of the admin needed to keep Share and Repair running.

Admin tasks would depend on your experience and what you are comfortable with. Basic computer skills and some experience with Microsoft Excel are needed for most roles, many of which can be done remotely.

New item documenters: New items are being donated to our Library of Things all the time and these need to be processed.

This role would involve photographing items, finding out approximate values online, and adding details onto a spreadsheet.

St Mungo’s Virtual Hope Guide - rebuilding hope and wellbeing in 2021.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, St Mungo’s ‘Hope Guide’ has gone virtual.

The Virtual Hope Guide provides information on groups, activities and support services for adults in B&NES, who are socially isolated, are affected by mental health issues, substance misuse or homelessness. Also included are local and national helplines.

This newly updated guide contains a variety of signposting information, aimed at maintaining and improving mental health and wellbeing.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic we wanted to ensure that the Hope Guide remained accessible and continued to provide ‘hope’ to those in the community; helping signpost and support the mental health and wellbeing of B&NES residents. Join Goldies on your sofa!

Forced by the Coronavirus to cancel all Goldies daytime singing sessions in March the Bath-based Charity led by Grenville Jones has been reaching out to older isolated people across England and Wales with its twice-weekly FUN singalongs on www.goldieslive.com These are led by Rachel and Cheryl, two popular Goldies session leaders, and can be seen every Tuesday and Thursday freely on YouTube or via the website.

“GoldiesLive.com sessions are being enjoyed by folks across the country and we are receiving many song requests and messages of support. In 2021 we will be developing the sessions with more inserted videos as well as the introduction of simple exercises for older people to help them to be more active through these difficult Winter months.”

The Charity was started by Grenville 13 years ago has received many awards and accolades. Prior to Lockdown there were 226 daytime sessions across England and Wales. Through 2020 a promotional video regularly appeared as part of the popular ITV’s Emmerdale thanks to support from the Postcode Lottery Community Fund.

With Lockdown Mark 3 now well under way, times remain tough for the staff at Bath Cats and Dogs Home.

The animal care team who are directly involved with the welfare of the animals are keyworkers.

They are on site every day, giving the dogs their winter walks, playing with the cats and making sure the animals have all they need before they find their forever homes.

The site has been closed to visitors since the first lockdown in March last year but some adoptions are still underway. Once applications and home checks are completed online some animals are being rehomed but by delivery only. There have been some lovely moments of mogs and dogs being delivered safely to their new owners.

The charity’s shops all remain closed and many of their fundraising activities are postponed. The Home would like to thank everyone for their amazing support during this difficult time.

Our newsletter includes quiz questions, dot to dot, wordsearches, word and number games and colouring in sheets. We hope to bring a little more of our beautiful city of Bath into the newsletter over the coming editions too.
