ANDREW GOMEZ-WORMINGTON

Automotive Technology Program

“In the auto industry, you’re always learning.”

Andrew Gomez-Wormington’s words illustrate his own experience.

A 2023 graduate of PCC’s automotive technology program, he went on to train with Tesla and now works as a technician at the car maker’s Colorado Springs location.

He learned about the training opportunity through James Cordova, chair of PCC’s auto program. Cordova made sure students were well informed about the evolution of that industry and its career prospects.

Gomez-Wormington describes the Tesla training vividly: “They basically firehose everything Tesla at you and there’s a test at the end.”

Gomez-Wormington said the extensive hands-on learning in PCC’s program—even though he worked on gasoline-powered vehicles at PCC—provided him with a sturdy foundation for the Tesla training.

“At PCC, if you were willing to take the initiative and ask questions, you could get ahead. When you can put (your knowledge) into practice, it’s different than reading out of a book.”

PCC prepares you to take up some of the most challenging work out there. A classroom, though, isn’t the real world. PCC narrows the gap through labs, industry-standard facilities, internships, and more. You gain real-life experiences while you still have your professors and advisors behind you.

IT GETS REAL HERE IT GETS REAL HERE

Nursing and Allied Health Teaching and Learning Center

For new healthcare workers, the hospital environment can be overwhelming. For PCC grads, it’s already part of their everyday learning. The Nursing and Allied Health Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) houses 9 healthcare-related programs in the East Tower of Pueblo’s historic St. Mary-Corwin Hospital, offering certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees.

In the TLC, you learn, practice, and reflect in classrooms and high-tech learning labs. It’s multiple floors of an actual hospital with a pharmacy lab, surgical tech lab, and everything that’s needed to be prepared for your first day on the floor. Walk through the doors on the second floor, and you will feel as if you are on an active floor of the hospital with a nurse station and patient rooms. There are monitors, beeps, and lights. It’s the Nursing Simulation Lab, where nursing students learn how to respond to real healthcare scenarios with mannikins, not real patients.

Human Anatomy Learning Center

Imagine learning human anatomy working with our two human cadavers and on an Anatomage table—an interactive, 3-D visualization station—at our Human Anatomy Learning Center (HALC) on the main campus. The HALC facilitates high-quality, high-touch experiences using skeletal and organ system models and Anatomy in Clay®.

MEGAN SHEPHERD

Surgical Technology program

Inspired by “Grey’s Anatomy,” Megan Shepherd enrolled in the Surgical Technology program at Pueblo Community College. At 31, she moved to Pueblo with her husband and two young daughters, seeking a career change from administrative work.

“I had to Google what a surg tech was because I didn’t even know that was a job,” she said, recalling her acceptance into the program as a transformative experience.

Classes at PCC’s Teaching and Learning Center at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital allow her to learn in a real-world environment alongside professionals. Balancing family and studies has been a challenge, but she remains dedicated despite the late nights and early mornings.

Megan highly values her instructors, whom she calls “the most amazing professors.” After graduation, she hopes to work in Pueblo or Colorado Springs, with the ultimate goal of making her children proud and proving that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.
