INTERIOR RENOVATION IN AN EXISITNG MIXED USE BUILDING. INTERIOR CONSTRUCTION HAD BEEN DEMOLISHED (SEPERATLY PERMITTED). SCOPE OF RENOVATION ENTAILS NEW MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, PLUMBING, AND FIRE PROTECTION INFRASTRUCTURE. STRUCTURAL SCOPE OF WORK IS LIMITED TO REMOVAL OF A BEAM. CONCRETE PLATFORM POUR OVER EXISTING POST-TENSIONED SLAB ON GRADE FOR ACCOMMODATION OF PLUMBING FACILITIES AND ACCESSIBLITY TO THEM (RAMP STR. INCLUDED). PROJECT ENTAILS CHANGE OF USE FROM NIGHT CLUB TO TUTORING CENTER.

Miami Beach will be underneath six feet of water in 2100; its eccentricity, diversity, and flamboyancy submerged in the depths, would erase the city we know today. Planning for resilience is the obvious solution, but it’s an issue beyond being able to propose a livable Miami, and more of what is it that sustains the life of a city and its identity. One response to the latter is found in the relationship of city growth and Complexity theory. In Complexity theory, the city is regarded as a complex structure that is composed of dynamic

networks of interactions, which are adaptive; both the individual and collective behavior mutate and self-organize corresponding to a change initiating collection of events. The growth of the city is determined as a response to its environment, and the overlapping emergence of connections allows for interconnectivity to occur at multiple scales and amongst numerous things. The redundancy of connections entails that even when one fails, links between networks will always remain. As Miami adapts to the changes

in sea-level rise, through the process of complexity theory, this proposal seeks to generate series of reactions that develop at urban to building scale, and ultimately coalesce into one organism: Coalesce-city. In Coalesce-city, as flooding interrupts the current transportation arteries of Miami Beach, which are highly vehicle-orient- ed, connectivity in the city is sustained by land filling areas and introducing temporary platforms that will increase pedestrian circulation. The order by which parts of the city are raised and plat-

forms become permanent is dependent on causality of climate change, as opposed to a pre-defined Modernist approach on city planning. Miami Beach’s vibrant ambiance remains and pulses through Coalesce-city as it thrives from the reactions of clustered networks and the demands of the megalopolis.
