Talking Turkey • President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863, supposedly as a response to a campaign organized by a magazine editor. In 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving Day forward one week, as it is presently celebrated. • In 2011, more than 248.5 million turkeys were raised. More than 219 million were consumed in the United States. An estimated 46 million of those turkeys were eaten at Thanksgiving, 22 million at Christmas and 19 million at Easter. • The average weight of turkeys purchased for Thanksgiving is 16 pounds, meaning that approximately 736 million pounds of turkey were consumed in the United States during Thanksgiving in 2011. • When Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin sat down to eat their first meal on the moon, their foil food packets contained roasted turkey and all of the trimmings. • Turkey is listed among the top 10 foods for your eyes because it’s rich in zinc (plus the Bvitamin niacin protects against cataracts). • Only tom turkeys gobble. Hen turkeys make a clicking noise. • Domesticated turkeys cannot fly. • Wild turkeys can fly for short distances up to 55 miles per hour and can run 20 miles per hour.

Trustworthy Mover Feel Bigger The United States Census Bureau estimates that nearly 40 million Americans changed residences last year. While many turned to moving professionals for assistance, some learned the hard way that not all moving companies are created equally. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) received nearly 3,000 complaints about moving companies last year alone. Good news arrived in October in the form of a new law that provides additional protection for victims of “rogue” moving companies that hold belongings hostage in the interest of scamming consumers to pay unexpected fees. The new law gives FMCSA the authority to force the return of consumer belongings and the ability to levy fines. “Unfortunately, our industry has been plagued by moving ‘companies’ that advertise unbelievable ‘deals’ that turn out to be consumer scams,” says Jon Sorber, executive vice president of Two Men And A Truck (, the nation’s largest franchise moving company.

Living large in a little home may not only simplify life, minimize costs and reduce environmental impact, it can be easier to achieve than many realize. Following these easy tips can help make rooms feel bigger and brighter. 1. Open floor plans and furniture placement that leaves views open make spaces easy to navigate and the room feel bigger. 2. Lighten up. Light colors on walls and furniture help small spaces feel large. Letting in natural light extends the feel of the room beyond its boundaries. 3. Get double-duty furniture: tables and ottomans with hidden storage space. Clean spaces look bigger, so keep clutter out of sight. 4. Store smart and stay organized. Shelving units maximize wall space for storage; add baskets on the bottom shelves for extra capacity. Fill clear containers with seasonal clothing and items and slide them under couches and beds. 5. Convert a closet into a home office by adding a desk and shelves. Hang organizers on the back of the door for extra storage. In the event of a power outage or winter storm, remember NEVER use outdoor propane appliances indoors or in enclosed areas. This can result in CO poisoning or death. These include outdoor

portable heaters, barbecue grills, and portable generators. Only use appliances indoors that are designed and approved for indoor use.


Propane tanks should be stored outside. Never store any propane tanks in the garage, basement or any other indoor areas at any time, even during the winter months. Cover your grill with a weatherproof cover and keep the tank at least 5 feet from your house.


Is Your New Nest Lead Free? The CDC reports at least 4 million households have children living in them that are being exposed to lead. If your home was built before 1978, consider hiring a certified inspector to check for lead hazards in your home. Children under age 6 are most at risk for lead poisoning. If you’re renting, report chipped or cracked paint to your landlord if you live in an older home and make sure your children do not chew on painted surfaces such as window sills. Ask your doctor to test your young children for lead even if they seem healthy. Because lead exposure often occurs with no obvious symptoms, it frequently goes unrecognized. If you’re living in an older home, take pro-active steps to ensure your home is lead free and safe.

Clear any accumulated grass clippings and dirt from the blades, the underside of the mower deck and the discharge chute. • Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces. • Tighten all fasteners as needed. • Replace damaged or worn parts. • Apply a light coating of oil to all exposed metal parts. • Check the manufacturer’s operating manual and oil all bearings and mechanical parts as recommended. • Service the air filter as described in your owner's manual. • Add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank and run the motor for about five minutes. Stop the motor, let it cool, and then drain the fuel tank. Start up the motor again, and let it run until it stops. 4

Drain the oil while the engine is still warm to remove any sediment. • Clean or replace the oil filter. • Remove spark plug and pour in one ounce of number 20 grade oil on the cylinder. This prevents the cylinder from freezing due to rusting. • Remove the battery (if applicable) from your mower and fully charge it before placing it in storage. • Cover the engine and mower with a waterproof material to minimize any moisture or dust from getting on the machine. Fire-Proof Your Holiday Home 'Tis the season for at-home entertaining - food, friends, family, fun and yes, even fires. Fire fighters respond to calls of nearly 400,000 home fires each year, according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). Many fires occur in cold weather months as more people bring warmth into their homes with things like traditional candles or holiday lighting. These fires result in more than 15,000 civilian deaths or injuries annually. Fire-proof the holiday season with these tips that safeguard your family and your home:

Go flameless Reduce your risk of fire by using flameless candles. Though they look and smell like real candles, they don't pose the same safety risks. Scentsy Wickless Candles provide the light and ambiance of traditional candles without the smoke, soot or an open flame.

Avoid outlet overload Don't overload electrical outlets and extension cords with holiday lights or other electronics. Plug only one heat-producing appliance, such as electric blankets, irons, toasters or coffee makers, into a receptacle outlet at a time. Consider avoiding outlet overload by choosing battery-powered options when they're available.

Cook with care Unattended cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home fire injuries, according to the NFPA. Don't stray too far from the kitchen if you're frying, grilling or broiling food. If you're boiling, baking, or roasting, be sure to check it regularly and use a timer to remind you when it's finished. Plug microwave ovens and other cooking appliances directly into an outlet. Never use an extension cord for a cooking appliance, as it can overload the circuit and cause a fire.

Be prepared November

Establish a fire-safe home by installing fire extinguishers and smoke alarms. Use a portable fire extinguisher to save lives and property by putting out or containing small fires. Store extinguishers where they can be quickly accessed in areas with great fire risk, such as in the kitchen or near the garage door. Smoke alarms should be installed in every room of the home, except for the kitchen, and should be tested once each month.
