t's only a matter of time now. Your little bundle of joy is on its way, and for the first time you are about to be a parent. Think you're ready? Many people do and then the reality of parenthood strikes them. Remember your friends who said being a parent is nothing like they expected? They were right.

Parenting is a wild ride, but it's also one of the - if not the - most rewarding things you'll ever do in your life. Just don't expect it to be smooth sailing right from the get-go. It's going to be challenging, but there are things you can do to prepare before your life changes forever.

To give you the leg up you so desperately need, Dawn Dais, author of the parenting book "The S--- No One Tells You," offers this advice:

Here are some tips to help you prepare

■ Take advantage of your freedom. If this is your first baby, you need to maximize every second of freedom you have left. Go to the movies, order an appetizer and a dessert at dinner, travel, decide to leave the house and then do so 25 seconds later. Watch television shows with cuss words.

■ Sleep now. Earlier this year, Dais and Store Brand infant formula released a "Baby's First Year" survey that found 25 percent of new moms confessed their biggest fear before their baby's arrival was never sleeping again. You will sleep again, but it might not be for a few months, so it's important to get it in while you still can!

■ Do your research. Make sure to discuss important topics before the baby arrives, such as feeding. The

survey found infant formula is the last topic researched by new moms while pregnant, but the No. 1 topic researched after their baby arrives. A lot of new parents don't think about this because they just assume they will breastfeed. They are told that it is the most natural thing on the planet and so it's not even a consideration or option not to breastfeed.

But what people don't tell you is that breastfeeding can be hard and there may be challenges. The survey also found that more than 50 percent of moms experience issues when it comes to breastfeeding baby, with low breast milk supply being the top concern. So, knowing your feeding options before baby arrives is vital.

■ Babies are expensive, so know where you can save big. It's important to note that all infant formulas are required to meet the same FDA standards. That means you can choose store-brand infant formulas that meet the same federal nutrient requirements for baby as nationally advertised brands, and in fact, cost up to 50 percent less!

Follow these tips to have a healthy and safe winter season: 1. Know which winter items are poisonous. There are many household items in use during the winter that may pose a specific poison risk, including antifreeze and snow salt.

Add Fire Safety to Your Family's Routine

Think of all the items you replace regularly - your cellphone, lightbulbs and even your toothbrush. But when was the last time you replaced your smoke alarm batteries, or even the alarms themselves? It's easy to overlook, but the time to think about fire safety is now - before an emergency strikes.

Many assume that because they have smoke alarms in their homes, they're protected in the event of a fire. In reality, smoke alarms need to be installed, maintained and tested regularly to ensure they're working properly. That effort includes knowing how old smoke alarms and their batteries are, as neither lasts forever. While smoke alarm lifespan and sensing technology have improved in recent years, the fact remains that all smoke alarms - even hardwired and sealed battery models - expire after 10 years.

"According to the National Fire Protection Association (www.nfpa.org), three out of five home fire deaths occur in homes without smoke alarms or from missing or dead batteries," said Tarsila Wey, director of marketing for First Alert.

"Just like other household duties, it's important to make sure alarm

Smoke alarms should generally be installed at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms. It's also recommended to install smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings.

Remember, smoke rises, so high placement provides a direct path for detection. Lastly, don't install smoke alarms near windows, doors or ducts, where drafts might interfere with their operation.

Get complete coverage - In general, there are two types of fires - quick flaming and smoldering. Today's smoke alarms are effective at detecting both but use unique technologies that make them better suited for particular locations within the home. The NFPA and other safety advocates recommend installing dual-sensor alarms like the First Alert 10-Year Battery Dual Sensor Alarm because they provide the best potential for early detection of all types of common household fires while helping to reduce the number of non-emergency alarms all while providing a decade of protection without the need for costly and ongoing battery replacement.

Practice your home fire escape plan at least twice a year and make sure to plan a meeting spot.

pring is on its way and with that we have the tradition of “Spring Cleaning” by going through every nook and cranny in our home to ensure the winter blues and blahs are gone! If you are “nesting” and waiting for baby to come you may have a jumpstart on the rest of us—you go girl!

Some things to consider while preparing for spring (and baby) is refreshing your space (and baby’s) with 100-percent therapeutic grade essential oils. Pure essential oils should not trigger an allergic reaction to perfumes of any kind, since it is 100-percent pure and used for aromatherapy, be sure you are getting the best grade for your home and family.

Clove oil is said to kill mold and fungus and increase our energy levels at the same time—for the killing of mold and fungus, who doesn’t want clove oil in their kitchen (and bathroom)? You can even create a cleaning spray using clove oil and others, such as lemon and orange, to increase the healthy benefits of your natural cleaning solutions.

Orange oil is said to kill bacteria and pathogens while helping to fight cancerous tumors, decrease anxiety levels and increase circulation. On top of that, Dr. Axe on his website says it even decreases acne and reduces wrinkles. Yes to orange oil, please!

Your Living Space: Sage and Lavender For Your Kitchen Space: Clove and Orange You can diffuse essential oils right on your stovetop if you don’t have enough diffusers for each area of your home.

Add a few drops of each of these essential oils into your diffuser, along with whatever amount of water is needed for your specific diffuser, and begin living in a healthier and more peaceful home.

Sage oil is the “anti” oil—it is an antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antibacterial and more.

Sage, in many American Native traditions, is also used for smudging to cleanse the home or other areas, and even the body, of toxins and “negative energy” by burning a bundle of dried sage leaves and using the smoke to “smudge out” the bad juju. It is said that the smoke attaches itself to the bad energy and takes it away when it dissipates. I don’t know about that, but I do know of the many health benefits of smudging and that I don’t feel comfortable smudging sage with babies around. Thus, I use sage oil instead, it has the same healthy benefits.

Lavender oil is a well-known essential for creating a calming atmosphere by reducing anxiety, helping us to sleep better and even killing off a headache.

But did you know that it is also good for relieving pain, reducing symptoms of diabetes, increasing brain function and even slowing the aging process. Add some lavender into your daily regime by diffusing it in your living room, bedroom and your baby’s room.

Your Bedroom Space: Ylang Ylang and Lavender I discussed lavender oil above and many who use it regularly will tell you that diffusing it in the bedroom is essential for their healthy sleep patterns, as it helps induce a calmness in the body making it easier to fall asleep.

Ylang Ylang oil is said to have a sedative effect, antidepressant properties and lowers blood pressure, along with many

other health benefits. Ylang Ylang is a sensual essential oil that also increases libido (if you just had a baby, you may not want that!) and helps set “the mood”.

It is also used in many perfumes due to its aroma, so perfect for a natural perfume with many added benefits.

Your Baby’s Space: Lavender and Lemon Again with the lavender, oy veh! Well since lavender oil promotes a calming effect making it easier to sleep, why wouldn’t you want it in your baby’s room?

A gentle diffuse of lavender is best since you baby is, well, a baby and doesn’t need the same amount as you may. One or two drops of essential lavender oil in the water of your diffuser is enough.

Lemon oil has been around for a long time and is well known for being a natural disinfectant and for refreshing space—such as lemon oil in dish soap or laundry and other cleaners, so why would you want a cleaning oil diffused in your baby’s space? Lemon oil has many health benefits including promoting and supporting a healthy immune system, but the real reason is its ability to relieve pain from colic. Yup! It’s great for babies who have colic or other abdominal pain.

Be sure to check with your pediatrician before using essential oils on or around your baby. Every child is different, with different needs. If it seems that your child could possibly be bothered in any way by your use of essential oils, stop immediately. They are known to be safe and non-toxic, but every child is different.

Best for PreemiesA 100 Percent Human Milk Diet It is widely known that breast milk is best for babies. However, many people are not aware that babies born prematurely need more calories and protein than breast milk alone can provide.

This is why for preemies weighing less than 3 pounds, 5 ounces (1,500 grams), the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends fortifying mother's milk or pasteurized donor milk, using a product called human milk fortifier (HMF).

This product name can be a cause of confusion for many because it suggests the fortifier is made from human milk.

Yet, this is not the case; nearly all commercial HMFs are made from cow milk.

"In the past, we've had to rely on bovine milk - cow milk - protein to help preemies grow, and that's not natural," said Amy Hair, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, neonatologist and director of the neonatal

nutrition program at Texas Children's Hospital.

While some cow milk-based nutrition may be OK for full-term infants, clinical studies show that the risk of several severe complications, particularly necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), increases with every 10 percent of cow milk in a premature infant's diet, according to research published in "Breastfeeding Medicine." NEC is one of the leading causes of death among preterm babies.

In fact, NEC affects 1 in 6 extremely premature infants who receive cow milkbased nutrition in their diet, according to research published in the "Journal of Pediatrics."

Healing the Diaper Rash

D

iaper rash happens. It doesn’t happen to every baby or all the time, but that does not mean it cannot happen to yours. If your baby gets diaper rash, the first thing you should NOT do is blame yourself. Rashes happen. The next thing you should do is understand that they are painful to your baby and act immediately in healing the rash and eliminating the cause of it.

When my daughter was a baby she would get terrible diaper rash and nothing seemed to work. I was distraught!

I would take her to her pediatrician who assured me it’s “no big deal” but it was a big deal to my daughter who was in pain and with no relief. Not even prescription creams worked on her stubborn rash that soon caused blisters. I had to do something!

I switched from disposable diapers, which irritated her skin, to cloth diapers (which saved me a lot of money in the long run) and I changed them OFTEN. I was on diaper duty 24/7 to ensure that she stayed as dry as possible to help heal the rash. Through this process, I learned she was allergic to her own urine. If I had known then what I know now, having

raised five babies, I would have found someone who makes homemade salves!

They work. I have used both devil’s club and dandelion salves and am amazed at how quickly the rash heals, along with keeping baby as dry as possible.

There are other things you can do to soothe your baby’s bum while working toward healing the rash: ● Coconut Oil is also great for diaper rash, but not as good as the salves mentioned. I’ve learned this from experience, but many moms love coconut oil for baby’s bum. ● Baking Soda Baths are very helpful for soothing and healing baby’s sore bottom. Add 2 TB baking soda to baby’s bath and give them a baking soda bath for 15-20 minutes up to three times a day. ● Going Naked is a great way to help them heal because the air allows them to stay dry rather than in a diaper that will soon be wet. It’s a messy solution but a healthy one.

● Use Natural Wipes for a gentler way of wiping baby’s bottom. (There is a recipe in the February issue of Natural Baby Magazine that includes essential oils—lavender is great for rashes -even eczema-but do not apply it directly on the skin! Lavender oil must have a carrier such as water, olive or other oils.) ● Cloth Diaper your baby with no plastic covers or rubber pants. This way, you can know when to change your baby so the urine won’t irritate his/her skin. ● Change Diapers every two hours or more often as needed to ensure the urine doesn’t irritate the skin.

Disposable diapers are well known for holding a lot of urine, which may be great for overnight but not great for rashes. ● Change Detergents to a mild baby-safe laundry detergent (such as Dreft) or make you own all-natural laundry soap. The Internet is full of recipes for natural living. ● White Vinegar is great for adding to the washing machine. It eliminates urine stains and odors (both baby and pet urine) and helps prevent static cling. Use white vinegar instead of bleach or other chemicals for baby’s diapers and clothing. You can also rinse the diapers in a second rinse to ensure any detergents are gone. ● Eliminate Baby Powders especially ones with any unnatural additives.

While healing a diaper rash, do not

even use corn starch, which allows bacteria to grow.

As a parent, we want our children to be healthy, happy and content. One way we can ensure this is by eliminating causes of the opposite. If your baby has a stubborn rash and you are exasperated, work with your pediatrician/naturop ath to determine the cause of the rash, such as an allergy to their own urine, and do all you can to help your baby heal.
