his long established family practice moved from St John’s Road in 1971 with the opening of Ladywell Medical Centre to enjoy the larger premises and additional facilities for attached paramedical staff. With time the practice has grown in size and the current partners are listed below.

Registrars Registrars are attached to the practice for one year. Having had several years experience in hospital, he or she is working for an additional year in general practice prior to becoming a fully fledged GP. With your consent, the Registrar may video your consultation for teaching, training or assessment purposes.

Medical Students The practice is committed to teaching Medical Students. First year Medical Students come to the practice to start to learn about factors which influence health. Second year Medical Students are introduced to history taking and examination.

Final year students are attached to the practice on a regular basis and may be present with the doctor when he/she is consulting or visiting.

You may be offered an appointment with a Senior Medical Student with a doctor in attendance or you may be asked to see a student before seeing the doctor with whom you booked an appointment. Your consent will be sought beforehand, and it is perfectly acceptable if you prefer that a Medical Student not be present, and your consultation or visit to be only with the doctor. We are very grateful for patient support in this important venture.

The surgery also provides a Coronary Heart Disease Clinic and a Diabetic Clinic. If required, your doctor can organise the necessary appointments for you.

Disabled Patients To assist disabled patients the practice may be accessed by a ramp facility at both east and west entrances.

Patient Information All disciplines within the practice including Doctors, Practice Nurses, Health Visitors, District Nurses and Ancillary Staff have access to patient information held on computer or medical records.

Appointments Consultations are by appointment.

Appointments are for 10 minutes. If you feel your problem(s) will take longer than this please let the Receptionist know when you are making an appointment. Telephone 0131 334 3602, during surgery hours, as noted below. Same day appointments are available for urgent conditions.

The Corstorphine Trust The Corstorphine Trust is a local community association based at the Corstorphine Heritage Centre, Dower House, in St. Margaret’s Park Corstorphine.

The Trust is committed to the encouragement of public interest in the character and history of Corstorphine. We support the preservation, development and improvement of features of general public anenity or historic interest. We also keep a watchful eye on local planning issues!

The Centre is open to the public every Saturday and Wednesday betweeen 10.00am and 12.00 noon.

During this time you can visit our museumm, look through the archives, visit the shop (on sale are publications, postcards, photographs, souvenirs and membership!) and on your way home you can stop for a freshly brewed cup of tea from our kitchen.

Various groups meet in the Heritage Centre. We currently have a Photographic Group and Video Group meeting monthly and Bridge Club meeting weekly. During the winter we have a series of History lectures and we also run a series of concerts throughout the year (details on our website). Walks around historic Corstorphine are available by arrangement.

We also have rooms for hire. Our largest room can accomodate up to 40 people.

You too can help us by becoming a member of the Corstorphine Trust and getting involved in the many activities. Come along for a coffee on Wednesday or Saturday mornings 10.00am - 12.00 noon to find out more.

We also offer telephone consultations and the receptionist can arrange this for you if you or the doctor feels it appropriate. Patients have freedom of choice to see any practitioner within the practice.

Emergencies Patients will be seen in an emergency either at home or in the surgery by the duty doctor, who will usually be one of the Partners or Registrars. Please Telephone 0131 334 3602. In a life threatening emergency please telephone 999.

Surgery Hours Normal surgery is open: Mon - Fri 8.00am - 6.00pm We have a limited number of appointments outwith these hours. Please phone reception for availability

Out of Hours Should you require to speak to or see a family doctor urgently outside the normal surgery hours, please contact NHS 24 on 08454 24 24 24 who may refer you to Lothian Unscheduled Care Service (LUCS). If it is necessary for you to be seen, you may be asked to attend either, the new Royal Infirmary, Western General Hospital or other centre.

This service is available: Monday to Thursday, 6.00pm - 8.00am and all weekend from Friday 6.00pm - Monday 8.00am.

Telephone Changeover At 8.00am Monday to Friday the telephone is switched over from out of hours to normal service. It would be appreciated if patients would refrain from telephoning the practice until 8.05am as the Reception Staff cannot undertake the necessary switch over procedure when there are incoming calls.

Staff Training The practice will usually close at 12.30pm on the fourth Wednesday of each month for staff training and education. However this can be subject to change. Please check the practice website and notices in the practice for closure dates.

Home Visits If you are unable to come to the surgery, a request for a home visit should be made by telephoning 0131 334 3602 before 10.30am.

Emergencies only will be accepted after 10.30am. This will help to ensure that such requests are dealt with most effectively.

Registration Patients wishing to register with the practice should obtain a Registration Form from the practice or download it from www.psd. scot.nhs.uk/doctors/registration-with-a-practice. html. You should present the completed document to the practice you wish to join along with two forms of ID, e.g. Birth Certificate, Student ID Card, Driving Licence, Passport, or HC2 Certificate or Home Office APP Reg Card which the practice only need sight of and will not retain copies.

Repeat Prescriptions If you are on long term medication you will be provided with a repeat prescription slip. This should be handed in at the reception desk, ordered online at www. ladywellwest.co.uk or posted (enclosing SAE if you wish it posted back). For security reasons, telephone requests cannot be accepted. Your prescription will be available for collection in two working days from receipt or 3 working days if collected by pharmacist on your behalf. Prescriptions may be collected Monday to Friday 8.00am – 6.00pm.

Medication on repeat prescription is subject to review. Patients should make routine appointments for review when asked by the Doctor signing their prescription. Patients will be informed when they pick up their prescriptions if a review appointment needs to be made.

Security Gates Our neighbours have insisted on having security gates which will be locked between 7.00pm and 7.00am Monday to Friday and at weekends.

A box for prescription requests is now attached to the gates and will be emptied on a daily basis.

Results 10

In order to obtain test results please telephone 0131 334 3602, between 9.00am and 5.00pm, when our Reception Staff will be pleased to help.

Complaints Procedure If you have a complaint, you should contact the Practice Manager, in writing, in the first instance.

PATIENTS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES Rights • Patients have a right to confidentiality, • Where possible, patients may choose to consult any doctor within the practice subject to availability of appointments or home visit workload. In cases of short notice or emergency, the practice nominates a duty doctor in rotation, • In the event of a complaint, patients have access to the practice complaints procedure. This can be accessed via the Practice Manager or the Practice Complaints Partners.

• A chaperone may be requested by any patient if they would prefer to have one, • Female patients are required to have a female chaperone (normally a nurse) during gynaecological examination by a male doctor, • Patients have access to their medical records in keeping with the Access to Medial Records Act 1990, subsumed within the Data Protection Act, subject to the recommended administration fee, • The practice operates an anti - discrimination policy, • The practice strives to run appointments to time, however, if you have been waiting longer than 30 minutes for your appointment please report to reception.

Responsibilities • To participate in own healthcare and treatment, • To attend booked appointments or cancel giving 24 hours notice if possible, • Abusive or threatening behaviour will not be tolerated and will result in removal from the list, • Patients treated for Drug Addiction are required to sign a Contract Agreement, • Due to the increase in missed appointments, it would be appreciated if you could let us know

as early as possible if you are unable to make your agreed appointment. Failure to do so will reduce the number of available appointments for other patients.

PRACTICE STAFF Practice Manager Mavis Crawford is responsible for the day-to-day running of the practice. Any enquiries of a nonmedical nature should be made to her.

Receptionists We have a team Receptionists who are your first contact with our practice and they will do everything possible to help you with your medical enquiries.

Practice Nurses The Practice Nurses have a wide range of qualifications, and see patients for general nursing procedures, health promotion and contraception, including emergency contraception.

The range of services provided by the Practice Nurses, include the following clinics: • Immunisation and advice for travel (Please contact at least six weeks before travelling where possible), • Adult Immunisations, • Cervical Smears, • Child Immunisations, • Influenza, • Cryotherapy clinic. (Please make an appointment with your GP first), • Heart Clinic (for those with Coronary Heart Disease), • Diabetes, • Asthma, • Health Promotion.

The Practice Nurses are available from 8.30am 5.30pm, Monday to Friday. Appointments can be made at Reception.

They are also available for telephone advice calls between 11.00am to 11.30am and 4.00pm to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

A Phlebotomist also works in the surgery. Her responsibility is to take blood. She is available Monday to Friday. If you only need a blood test, please ring for an appointment with the Phlebotomist.

You may also have an appointment with our Nursing Assistant who carries out duties under the supervision of the nursing staff, e.g. phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring and assists GP with Minor Surgery.

District Nurses The District Nurse Team is employed by Edinburgh Community Health Partnership and is based at Ladywell Medical Centre (West).

They can be contacted directly on 0131 334 4971 Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 4.30pm An answering machine service is available if the District Nurses are out on calls. This tape is checked at regular intervals throughout the day. After 4.30pm and at the weekend the District Nurses can be contacted on NHS24 – 08454 24 24 24.

The District Nurses visit patients in their own homes and assess their nursing and healthcare needs to provide a co-ordinated and holistic quality service to patients registered with the practice. They work closely with carers, GPs, hospitals, hospice services, social work services, physiotherapy and chiropody.

The District Nursing team would be happy to discuss any further details about the community nursing service in the north-west locality in Edinburgh.

Health Visitors Health Visitors are qualified nurses who have undertaken specialist training in community and public health nursing. The Health Visiting Team offer support and provide health promotion advice on many health issues such as immunisation, infant feeding, sleep and behaviour management and aim to support families with general child health concerns.

The Team also undertake developmental assessments for pre-school children and work closely with other partner agencies including local

nursery schools and Early Years providers and can offer assessment and appropriate referral when necessary.

A post-natal support group and local Breast Feeding support group in conjunction with midwife colleagues are facilitated by the Health Visitor Team.

The Team can be contacted on 0131 334 4955 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

An answering machine is available if the Health Visitors are out of the office.

Community Midwives Community Midwives are based at Corstorphine Hospital and can be contacted Monday to Sunday 8.00am - 4.00pm by telephone on 0131 459 7257.

In an Emergency the maternity services can be contacted 24 hours on 0131 242 2657 for the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh or 01506 523000 for St John‘s Hospital in Livingston. Pregnant women can self refer for a first midwife and scan appointment on 0131 536 2009 Monday to Friday 9.00am - 4.45pm.

The midwives provide antenatal and postnatal care as well as a homebirth service. Antenatal clinics run on Monday morning, Monday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. Appointments can be made and changed by phoning the Community Midwives’ office. Midwives also facilitate Parent Education Workshops, which run on a Friday afternoon and a Breastfeeding Support Group on a Tuesday morning, both at Craigmount High School.Breastfeeding Support Group on a Tuesday morning, both at Craigmount High School.

RANGE OF SERVICES Child Clinics Please bring you Parent Held Child Health Record to any child clinic, or appointment with your doctor.

Immunisation Clinic: Held on Tuesday afternoons.

Appointments arranged by the Health Visitor, via the Scottish Immunisation Recall System (SIRS) computer system. Immunisations are carried out by the Practice Nurses.

Child Health Surveillance Clinic: held on Tuesday morning when children of six months, eight to nine months and three to three and a half years are seen by a doctor and a health visitor.

Appointments will be arranged by Child Health and will be confirmed by the Health Visitor.

Other Services Appointments with the Doctor can be made at Reception to arrange any of the following services: • Maternity Care, • Contraceptive advice, • Minor surgery, • Diabetic surveillance, • Cryotherapy clinic, • Stroke clinic, • COPD clinic, • Citizens Advice Worker.

A free confidential Citizens Advice service operates once a week within the Ladywell Medical Centre. Citizen Advice Worker, Pauline Donne is available for consultation on a wide range of issues on Tuesday afternoons. Please contact Reception on 0131 334 3602 for an appointment.

SELF TREATMENT FOR COMMON ILLNESS AND ACCIDENTS Minor Ailments Service All pharmacists can recognise many common health complaints.They can give advice or, where appropriate, medicines that will help to clear up the problem. If your problem is more serious and needs the attention of a GP, your pharmacist will recognise this and advise you to see your GP.

A Note About Antibiotics Antibiotics only work on bacteria, and have no effect on viruses, like coughs, colds and flu.

The best treatment is with the simple remedies outlined below and we only use antibiotics when we suspect there is secondary bacterial infection.

Overuse of antibiotics can cause complications like thrush, diarrhoea and rashes.

Colds and Sore Throats Take plenty of fluids, and Paracetamol (as recommended for your particular age group).

Steam inhalations can also help congestion.

Coughs These can be soothed by hot drinks. If the cough is particularly irritating steam inhalations can be worthwhile. If you are bringing up coloured phlegm, you may need your chest checked.

Temperatures Children often run temperatures without other symptoms. They need to be cooled down and then they will feel much better. Do remove their clothes down to vests and pants and keep the room temperature down. Use Calpol or Disprol etc, and if necessary, sponge them down with lukewarm (not cold) water. If there is no improvement within 24 hours, then we should see them.

Diarrhoea Diarrhoea is usually caused by a virus and is therefore unable to be treated directly. In most cases taking small and frequent amounts of clear fluids for 24 hours or so will allow the tummy to settle. If symptoms are persistent or the patient is becoming generally less well rather than improving, consult your Doctor.

Nose Bleeds Blow your nose to expel contents then sit leaning forward and press firmly to close the fleshy part of the nose breathing slowly through an open mouth. Continued pressure for ten minutes allows most nose bleeds to stop.

Burns and Scalds Immediately cool with copious amounts of cold water. Continue for 10 - 15 minutes until the pain subsides, then cover loosely with dressing. If the burn is large or the skin is broken, consult your Doctor or attend Accident and Emergency.

Sprains 16

Use a cold compress or ice pack to reduce swelling Elevate and rest the injured area. Take Paracetamol or Aspirin for pain relief.

Strains If unable to weight bear with leg or ankle injuries you should consult the Doctor.

Fits Place patient in recovery position (on his or her side) and ensure the airway is clear. Do not attempt to restrain and do not put anything in the mouth. If the patient is a feverish child, remove clothing and cool with tepid sponging. Contact your Doctor.

Dental Problems For toothache and other dental problems, please contact your dentist.

Childhood Illnesses Chickenpox is very common and produces crops of spots, which rapidly blister. Calamine will help to cool the skin and ease the itch. Paracetamol liquid may be required for fever. Due to immunisations, other formerly common illnesses such as measles and mumps are less often seen now. Many viral infections can produce a rash, and the child may be miserable and feverish for a few days. In most instances, symptoms are mild and the child will require only rest, ample fluids and Paracetamol for fever. If a child is very unwell, or you have difficulty with either fluid intake or temperature control, we are pleased to offer advice and arrange to see your child if necessary.

Meningococcal Rash Meningitis is a very rare condition but sometimes with meningococcal meningitis a rash may develop very rapidly which is typically like tiny bruising spots which join under the skin.

If such a rash develops, a glass or something clear should be pressed against the skin to see if the rash disappears. If the rash persists contact your Doctor as an emergency.
