ver the years I have had a very long, satisfying and happy association with Citroen cars. I will freely admit to being a great admirer of the previous C4 model, so it was with a great deal of anticipation that I started my test drive programme with this latest C4 model. I am delighted to say that I have not been disappointed. Since the middle nineteen thirties, Citroen have not been afraid to try out new ideas and design concepts. Unlike many other experimenters in the automobile world, Citroen’s ideas have always been practical and well thought out in advance. This latest C4 carries on that honourable tradition.

While fully accepting that “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder�, I find the styling to be most attractive, both inside and outside, with great care being placed on aerodynamic efficiency, in line with that honourable tradition going back to the iconic DS model of the middle nineteen fifties. Citroen were one of the first makes in my experience to use digital presentations for the various instruments, especially the speedometer, a feature which I liked tremendously. I am

happy to say that tradition continues in this latest C4 model. However, as many drivers still like the old analogue presentation, Citroen offer you both in this latest C4. As the picture below indicates, the speed is shown in a large digital lettering in the centre of the dial. Numbers around the circumference also highlight the speed with a red needle, that moves around the circumference over the numbers. To the left of the speedometer, the

tachometer has white lettering on a black background, with a red band that moves around under the numbers, to indicate the engine revolutions. The matching fuel gauge on the right of the speedometer, uses the same presentation as the tachometer. The whole set-up is so clear and easy to see whilst driving. rectangular panel shows, the time, date, day of the week and outside air temperature, as well as audio related information when the radio/CD equipment is switched on. A panel below that opens downwards to reveal a small storage space.

The main controls for the audio system are below that, with additional convenience controls on the steering wheel. The heating/ventilating system controls are at the bottom of the stack, ahead of the gearlever, with a covered ashtray and the cigarette lighter below the heating/ventilating controls. It is all well laid out, convenient and easy to use, whilst driving.

Controls for the four electric windows, electrically adjustable exterior rear view mirrors and the childproof locks are in the driver’s door armrest, whilst those for the Bluetooth telephone connections and cruise control are on the steering wheel.

Both front seats are comfortable and well shaped, with adjustments for reach, height, backrest angle and lumbar support. The leather covered steering wheel adjusts for both reach and height. The rear bench seat is divided 60/40 in the backrest, allowing it to lower into a horizontal position on the seat cushion, to give an adaptable luggage space. The two outer positions have ISOfix fittings for child safety seats. They are comfortable for adults as well.

The centre section of the rear seat is somewhat harder and higher, but there is still headroom for adults of average height and it is reasonably comfortable even for longer journeys.

Overall from a driving point of view, the car is comfortable and easy to drive. The controls are well laid out and easy to use. The electro hydraulic, power assisted, rack and pinion steering has an effortless, yet positive feel, with 2.8 turns from lock to lock. The large exterior rear view mirrors give an excellent view and make manoeuvring

in confined spaces so much easier.

When all five seats are in use, there is 0.410 cubic metres of luggage space, under the rear shelf and above the luggage floor. When only two seats are required, this expands to 1.185 cubic metres when loading to the roof. The car can manage braked trailers/caravans of up to 1300 kg, and unbraked trailers of up to 640 kg. The test car was fitted with a full size spare wheel and tyre, which is a fifty euro optional extra.

Performance wise, the car has a potential top speed of 180 kph (111 mph), which is more than satisfactory, as it is well above the national speed limit in most countries within the European Union.

Acceleration from 0-100 kph takes 14.4 seconds, which on paper, may appear to be a little lethargic. However, on the road it is perfectly satisfactory for a spacious comfortable and versatile family car. Certainly in city and suburban traffic, you will never be accused of holding

everyone up with the slow pace of your acceleration. Out on the open road, acceleration is more than satisfactory, provided you are in the right gear. It is no use crawling along in fifth gear with just over 1,000 rpm on the tachometer, then flooring the accelerator and expecting the car to take off like greased lightning. Select the right gear, with 2,000 rpm plus on the tachometer and the acceleration will be more than adequate.

While nobody in their right mind expects a spacious, comfortable, versatile family car to be a boy-racer’s dragster, they do expect a frugal fuel consumption, especially in this day and age of constantly rising fuel prices. The Citroen C4, will certainly not disappoint in that regard, with an Urban cycle delivery of 54 mpg (5.2 lt/100 km), Extra urban cycle of 78 mpg (3.6 lt/100 km), giving a Combined cycle average of 66 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km). This level of consumption also yields an exhaust emissions figure of 110 gm/km, putting the C4 comfortably into Irish road tax band A, with a current demand at present rates, of €104 per year. I cannot imagine any family motorist being dissatisfied with that level of performance.

ia estimate that the global market for economy cars will reach 2.4 million by 2014 and have expanded to 3.3 million by 2015. They also estimate that around 30% of these sales will be for the three door body style.

In the UK demand in this segment is split 55% five door and 45% three door. While the overall dimensions of the five door and three door are identical, the design team have made strenuous efforts to give the three door its own unique character. The design differences are most noticeable in the car’s profile, with its larger

door, different rear side windows and the sweeping body line. Upper specification levels also feature uniquely designed alloy wheels.

At the front the main grille opening is larger and has the option of of silver or red trim surrounds. There is a full width lower grille, a reprofiled bumper and black surrounds on the fog lamps in the upper specification level. At the rear the bumper has a black centre section, rather than a body coloured one, plus twin chromed exhaust outlets, all intended to give the model a sportier appearance.

Like its five door sister the three door offers buyers the choice of a three cylinder 1.0 litre and 1.25 litre four cylinder engine. The 1.0 litre develops 50 kW with 95 Nm, while the 1.25 litre gives 62 kW and 121 Nm. Both have exhaust emissions of 99 gm/km. The EcoDynamics version of the 1.25 litre has a combined cycle fuel consumption of 65 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km). The 1.25 litre is also offered with the option of

automatic transmission. Buyers have the choice of four trim and specification levels: One, One Air, Halo and Equinox.

The Equinox specification comes with a Red Chilli upholstery and high gloss black finish on the facia and gear knob. The distinctive, “telephone dial style” 15” alloy wheels have a glossy black metallic finish.

his new, third generation, Toyota Yaris, is due to go on sale in major European markets in the last quarter of this year. As before there will be a range of trim and equipment specifications on offer. These use different descriptive names in the various markets. One of the features that Toyota will be offering is a touch screen audio system, with Bluetooth and a 12v socket, or the Touch and Go installation that includes a satellite navigation system.

However, these systems do vary from trim and specification levels and from market to market.

CHEVROLET COLORADO RALLY CONCEPT he Colorado Rally concept is based on a double cab pick-up. It sits on an all wheel drive chassis and is perhaps intended to show both a sporty character, as seen in vehicles competing in events like the Paris - Dakar rally, besides emphasising the well respected versatility of Chevrolet trucks down through the past hundred years of its history. It rides on 18 inch diameter alloy wheel rims, fitted with mud terrain tyres.

Its suspension has a height adjustable range of 50 mm, while the special Fox Racing Shox dampers have a travel length of 140 mm. Power is provided by a 2.8 litre turbocharged diesel engine.

Frontal styling includes Chevrolet’s now current divided grille, flanked by large headlamp units with LED lighting. There is a sculptured bonnet with large flanged mudguards. There are additional lights in the roof, above the windscreen and in the exterior rear view mirror housings. The side windows are acrylic, while prominent towing eyes, front and rear, emphasise the vehicle’s off-road credentials, as do the winches fitted into the front and rear bumpers.

with a sprinkling of golden particles. Inside the main colour scheme is ash grey, while the neoprene seat coverings have contrasting orange stitching.

The Miray concept could not be more different. It is an open two seater sports car, drawing its inspiration from iconic sporting Chevrolets of the past like the Corvette and the rear engined Covair Super Spyder of the early nineteen sixties. Two front mounted, battery powered, 15 kW electric traction motors, provide emissions free driving in urban conditions. They draw their energy from a 1.6 kW/h Lithium-ion battery that is recharged by regenerative braking. The traction battery is centrally located beneath the driver. A 1.5 litre, turbocharged, four cylinder engine, combines with the electric traction motors to provide a spirited performance

when required. The internal combustion engine is linked to a dual clutch manual gearbox. The driver can select front or rear wheel drive.

The futuristic looking body is made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic. The wheels, 20 inch diameter at the front and 21 inch diameter at the back, are made from an aluminium carbonfibre composite. The interior is a combination of brushed aluminium, leather, white fabric and polished metal surfaces.

Retractable rear view cameras replace conventional rear view mirrors and extend from the side glass electrically. A forward facing camera operates in conjunction with the satellite navigation system.

Both concepts are due to be shown on the Chevrolet stand at the Frankfurt Motor Show in early September.

n Monday 15th August at 1.24 pm, a Skoda Octavia vRS recorded a speed of 325.328 kph (202.15 mph) on the Bonneville Salt Flats, making it the fastest Skoda ever produced.

The car was prepared in Milton Keynes by the Skoda UK technical team. The speed run was organised to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the sporty vRS specification.

The Octavia vRS was powered by the standard 2.0 litre TSI petrol engine.

Modifications included replacing the standard turbocharger, with a larger unit from Garett, operating at a boost pressure of 2.068+ bars. This allows the engine to develop in excess of 372 kW. Rather than regular petrol, the Bonneville car was adapted to run on a water plus methanol mix. Aerodynamic changes included lowering the car’s ride height by around 80 mm. It had a new sub-frame that accommodated a racing style intercooler.

Other alterations included fitting a reinforced roll cage, parachute, fire extinguishers and a window cage.

KIA PICANTO Dublin’s Only MAIN DEALER for

ecently I had the opportunity to take the new Kia Picanto on a short test drive. Starting from Airfield House in Dundrum, I took a longish drive through parts of the Dublin Mountains, before returning via some more built up areas like Dundrum and Sandyford. I am happy to say that I was very impressed with what I found. The car is a four door, four seater hatchback, with a reasonably sized luggage boot. Power is provided by a three cylinder, one litre petrol engine, driving a five speed manual gearbox. I was impressed with the silence and smoothness of the engine, even when accelerating .

The gearchange too, was smooth and precise. The seat was comfortable, the visibility all round was good and all the driving controls were conveniently laid out for effortless and relaxed driving. The Picanto felt just as relaxed and comfortable out on a quiet country road as it was in urban traffic.

On a short test drive like this, I did not do any specific performance testing, but the specifications indicate a 0-100 kph acceleration time of 14.4 seconds, a potential top speed of 153 kph (95 mph) and a combined cycle fuel consumption of 67 mpg

(4.2 lt/100 km). Exhaust emissions are 99 gm/km, so this new Picanto is comfortably within Irish road tax band A, with an annual charge at current rates, of €104.

This latest Picanto comes with Kia’s 7 years warranty.

The new Picanto comes in two levels of specification and trim; LX and EX. The LX is priced at €11,495. For that you get two front, two side and two curtain airbags, an electronic stability programme, with a Hill start assist, an emergency stop signal, electric front windows, remote controlled central locking and a trip computer. The emergency stop signal can detect when a driver is applying the brakes hard and suddenly. When this happens it flashes the brake lights three times to warn following traffic.

The EX specification includes all of the above and adds, rear electric windows, electrically adjustable, rear view mirrors, front fog lamps, Bluetooth telephone connections, air-conditioning and additional audio controls on the leather covered steering wheel, plus iPod and USB sockets. Jaguar E type sets new world reco rd

T

he 2011 Silverstone Classic, held from the 22nd to the 24th July, broke many records, but the biggest accolade for the event, comes after the Guinness Book of World Records confirmed that a new record was set for the ‘largest para de of Jaguar cars’, when 767 Jaguar E-typ es took part in a special parade lap of the Silverston e Grand Prix circuit.

The 2011 event was the major celebratio n of the 50th birthday of the Jaguar E-typ e, first produced in 1961. More than 1,000 E-types were on site and the vast majority of these took to the Grand Prix circuit on Saturday for a unique parade.

Although in excess of 800 E-types took to the famous grand prix track, the record of 767 is based on the number of participating cars mee ting the strict record verification criteria.

Getting over 800 gleaming E-types on and off the Silverstone track presente d a considerable logistical challenge and the result was an unrivalled display of one of the mos t beautiful sports cars ever produced. Owners came from acro ss Europe, from North America, Mexico and Australia to take part in this once in a lifetime event.

Among the parade were some very spec ial examples of the E-type. These included famous E-types with registration numbers 9600 HP (the oldes t surviving E-type and the only 1960 proto type in existence.

It was the original launch car, the 150 mph road test car and the subject of the book ‘The Most Famous Car in the World’. 77 RW is the earliest surviving production roadster and an origi nal press car. 848 CRY was the twelfth roadster produced and the most active racing E-type in 1961 ; it also appeared in the film ‘The Italian Job’. The Lindner/N ocker low-drag racer was one of the 12 origi nal Lightweight Etypes, raced in 1963/64 by Peter Lind ner and Peter Nocker and the subject of a famous recent restoration.

Peugeot’s new 508 model has a difficult job to do, as it replaces both the large segment 407 and the executive class 607. However, the design has been well executed and the car makes a very competent replacement for both models. Styling is very much a matter of personal taste, but I think that is has a modern, refined and highly attractive look, about it. Besides offering comfortable, seating space for five, it also has a large luggage boot. The test car was fitted out and equipped to the top level, Allure specification and powered by the refined 2.0 litre HDi diesel engine, driving the front wheels through a six speed manual transmission. This combination gives this large, refined executive car an exhaust emissions rating of 125 gm/km, placing it in Irish road tax band B, with an annual levy at current rates, of just €156. As tested, its recommended retail price, excluding delivery and associated charges, was €33,550, which is pretty good value for money, as far as the Irish market with its high VAT and VRT are concerned. Included in the price mentioned were two optional extras, a head-up display and upgraded audio system, which together added €1,000 to the price.

This spacious, comfortable, well equipped executive saloon, manages an excellent 44 mpg (6.4 lt/100 km) on the Urban cycle, stretching to an amazing 72 mpg (3.9 lt/100 km) on the Extra urban cycle. This gives an average of 58 mpg (4.8

lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. That is certainly very attractive in these days, when fuel prices are skyrocketing on an almost daily basis. This excellent fuel economy does not come at the expense of performance.

Acceleration from 0-100 kph takes just 9.8 seconds, while potential top speed is 210 kph

(130 mph). This allows the car to cruise effortlessly on motorways, with plenty of performance in reserve, while in the daily traffic lights grand prix, it can give a very good account of itself. To put that performance into perspective, a Mazda MX5 roadster coupe, I tested in September 2010,

seats were superbly comfortable and well bolstered. Each had electrical adjustments for reach, height, backrest angle, lumbar support and heating. The rear seat was divided 60/40 in the backrest and had a folding armrest in the centre, which incorporated two cupholders.

The instruments and driving controls are well laid

out for ease of use whilst driving. An interesting optional extra is the head-up display, visible behind the steering wheel, at the base of the windscreen. When the ignition is switched off, it folds away into the top of the facia. When activated it shows the speed in an easy to see, white digital figure. If you find the head-up display distracting, it can be deactivated by accessing a

control panel on the lower side of the facia, between the steering column and the driver’s door. This panel also allows you to raise or lower the read-out to correspond with the height setting selected for the front seat.

The main instrument binnacle contains five analogue instruments, two large and three small, all with white lettering on a black

background and red needles.

The large left hand dial is the tachometer, with a matching speedometer on the right. The background of the speedometer, is also used to show various warning signals in red. The three small dials, between the two large ones, at the top of the housing, show from left to right, oil temperature, fuel level and engine temperature. Below these three small dials, there is a digital information panel that shows a variety of other information.

At the top centre of the facia, between the two air vents, there is another digital information panel that shows the time and audio related information. It has a shallow shelf below. When satellite navigation is fitted this panel and the shelf are replaced by a large screen to display the relevant navigational information. A panel below this has two large buttons, one for the hazard warning switch and the other for the central locking. Below this there is a panel with all the audio system related knobs and push button switches.

Finally at the base of the centre console, ahead of the gearlever, there is a panel with two large round switches and a selection of buttons for the dual range climate control.

Where fitted the satellite navigation controls are on top of the centre tunnel, behind the gearlever. Switches for the front seat heating are also on the top of this centre tunnel.

As is becoming increasingly common these days, the steering wheel is an instrument panel in itself, with additional controls for the audio and related systems, plus the cruise control. The leather covered rim of the steering has a luxurious high

Once inside, it remains in your pocket or handbag and you press a button on the right of the facia to start or stop the engine. The electrically operated handbrake is located alongside this button. To start the clutch pedal needs to be fully depressed, while the

brake pedal needs to be fully depressed to release the handbrake. Childproof locks and four electric windows are standard, as is the electrically adjustable exterior rear view mirrors, that fold in automatically when the engine is switched off and the doors locked.

When all five seats are in use, the boot provides 0.515 cubic meters of luggage space. With the rear seat backs folded and you load to the roof inside the cabin, this increases to 1.381 cubic meters of loading space. In the Allure specification a full size pressed steel spare
