olvo have always built good practical family cars, going back to the 245 away back in the nineteen seventies. In more recent times I was impressed with space, comfort and overall versatility of the XC70. On collecting the V60, I had not driven 100 yards, when I knew that I was totally impressed with the quality, refinement and sheer driving pleasure offered by this latest Volvo.

The leather covered steering wheel had the feel of sheer quality, the seat was comfortable, with a wide range of adjustments, the engine was smooth and silent and the whole package was complimented by the utter effortlessness of the automatic transmission.

The car was totally effortless to drive, be it in congested city traffic, or out on the open rural roads. It would trickle along in city traffic without a murmur, yet when you needed power and acceleration, all that was required, was a gentle pressure on the accelerator pedal and it took off like greased lightning. It cruised along motorways at the legal maximum without a bother, while on suburban roads, it would cruise just as effortlessly at 100 kph (60 mph) without difficulty. besides Dublin city and County driving, I also went down the country to Carrickon-Shannon in County Leitrim and back.

The purpose was to spend several days cruising on the Shannon. This entailed additional clothing, food and equipment, all of which fitted under the tonneau cover over the normal luggage space behind the rear seats. Volvo also provide a 12v socket in the boot area, so there was no difficulty in plugging in my portable refrigerator, to keep various items of food at the required temperature. The V60 is thus very much a practical touring car for families, who like to get out and about in their leisure time.

Normal luggage space, above the floor and below the tonneau cover, is 0.430 cubic metres. A section of the floor can be raised to prevent items sliding about, when just a few things are being carried.

Below the floor there is a shallow compartmentalised tray for carrying small items.

Below this tray there is a well that could possibly

accommodate a Spacesaver spare wheel, although the test car came without a spare wheel, which is about the only black mark I could award against it.

Equipped with the D3 engine and Geartronic automatic transmission, the Volvo V60 can tow braked trailers/caravans of up to 1600 kg in weight. Unbraked trailers are limited to 750 kg.

The car comes as standard with roof rails, which greatly facilitates the carrying of items on the roof. Maximum roof loading is limited to 75 kg, which naturally includes the weight of the actual mountings and containers.

The only difficulty with towing is that glaring omission of a spare wheel. Even if you add a Spacesaver spare wheel yourself, these are not

suitable for the extra loads associated with towing.

To facilitate the carrying of long or awkward items of luggage, the rear bench seat backrest is divided 60/40. The centre section of the backrest contains a folding armrest, that has two cupholders and a shallow storage tray when the top is lifted. The backrest folds in sections onto the seat cushion, giving a level extension to the normal luggage floor.

The instrument panel is clearly laid out for comfort and ease of use whilst driving.

The main instrument binnacle, contains two large, round, analogue dials. Each has a digital information section in its centre. The dial on the left is the speedometer. In its centre there is the fuel gauge, as well as the trip and total

distance recorders. The matching gauge on the right is the tachometer and in its centre, it gives a variety of information, depending on the conditions and circumstances, things like an open door, outside air temperature, gear selected etc.

At the top of the centre console, there is a rectangular digital information panel, that gives a variety of audio associated and other information, including the temperatures selected for each side of the car, the level of heating selected for each front seat and the level of velocity selected for the climate control circulation fan.

Below the centre, rectangular air vent, there is a large panel that has buttons and knobs controlling the numerous functions of the audio system, dual range climate control and other operations, like windscreen and rear window demisting, parking sensors and other functions. The left hand arm of the steering wheel has buttons associated with the cruise control, while the right hand arm has audio associated control buttons.

They are all clearly marked, making them easy to see and use whilst driving, which is a prime requirement for safe driving. This is not surprising, as Volvo have invested heavily in safety, down through the years.

Included in the standard specification were, electrically adjustable, exterior rear view mirrors. These were of a large and useful shape, enabling them to give a clear view whilst driving. When the car was locked with the remote controlled locking, they folded in automatically. There were four electric windows and automatic door locking once the car was on the move. The

Overall the car was superbly comfortable and relaxing to drive, with an absolutely effortless performance, thanks to the silky smooth D3 engine and the excellent Geartronic automatic transmission. It was

he Mulsanne limousine is currently Bentley’s top of the range flagship. All the bright work like the matrix grille and the sill tead plates are all produced in polished stainless steel. Buyers have the choice of over one hundred different colours and if that is unsuitable for their requirements, Bentley Mulliner can produce colours specifically to customer requirements. Customers may tailor the interior of the car to their exact requirements and all the work is skilfully hand crafted. In the modern tradition there is a whole range of cutting edge electronic gadgetry fitted as standard.

In addition to the vast range of exterior colours from which to choose, customers have the option of 24 standard upholstery colours.

When laying down the design parameters for the Mulsanne, the engineers were told to give very careful consideration to the best choice of engine for the new model. Amongst the requirements were that it should provide effortless torque at even low speeds, it should provide the very highest levels of refinement and that it should be as environmentally friendly as possible, keeping in mind future as well as current standards in this regard.

After very careful consideration of all the parameters, the engineers came to the conclusion that the existing 6.75 litre V8 was by far the best choice.

In its latest guise the V8 now has a variable displacement and valve cam phasing. These additions allow the engine to close down four of its eight cylinders for maximum fuel economy when cruising and to adjust its breathing for a smoother idle speed and to get the best torque delivery. The use of new lightweight components, reduce reciprocating mass and internal friction for a smoother performance and better fuel economy. In its latest guise, it delivers 377 kW at 4,200 rpm and a fantastic 1020 Nm at 1,750 rpm. The engine is coupled to an eight speed automatic transmission, with the option of manual changes by means of paddles on the steering wheel. The transmission offers three selectable performance modes; Bentley - Sport and Comfort.

HONDA JAZZ HYBRID

he Jazz Hybrid uses the same 1.3 litre, four cylinder, i-VTEC engine, mated to a CVT automatic transmission, as the Honda Insight. Between the engine and the gearbox, there is an electric traction motor. The car is capable of running under electric power alone at low speeds. Overall it is claimed to have a combined cycle fuel consumption of 62 mpg (4.5

lt/100 km) with exhaust emissions of 104 gm/km.

It would thus fall into Irish road tax band A, with an annual charge, at present rates, of €104.

The battery pack has been located under the boot floor, so there is no compromise to the car’s normal 0.300 cubic metres of luggage space.

Also the rear seats can be folded flat in the normal way, which increases loading space to

1.320 cubic metres when the rear seat is fully folded and you load to the roof. The upfolding rear seat cushions, a unique Jazz feature, are also unaffected by the positioning of the battery pack.

Inside the Eco Assist instruments, that change colour to indicate when energy is being used economically or otherwise, are a standard feature.

Figures just out from the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) show that as of Wednesday, 13th April new car sales had surpassed the 50,000 mark.

Speaking on the milestone, Alan Nolan, Director General of the SIMI (pictured above) says, “We’re not running away with ourselves here but looking back on the dreadful year that was 2009 when 57,000 new cars were sold in the whole of the year, reaching 50,000 at this stage is positive.”

udi’s R8 Quattro roadster, is my Star of the show, for a number of very personal reasons. First of all I happen to like open two seater roadsters. Then as far as I am concerned, bright red is the only colour for a roadster. I also think that chromed or polished silver wheels are an essential part of the whole equation. I distinctly dislike black upholstery, so the light cream seat upholstery fills the bill

superbly. I can tolerate a certain amount of black, provided it is set off with a lighter colour and I think it is the best colour for mats and carpets. Finally I like a silver windscreen surround, so the show car was practically designed to my precise requirements.

A roadster is not for poncing around in, its prime purpose is to provide superb driving pleasure. The 5.2 litre, V10 engine, certainly

provides the sort of performance to bring a permanent smile to your face. It offers a potential top speed of 313 kph (194 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in a highly satisfying 4.1 seconds.

That sort of performance needs all the grip it can

get, so Audi’s excellent Quattro all wheel drive, is an essential for both performance and safety, two things that are the bastions of superb driving pleasure. The engine comes with the choice of a six speed transmission, in either pure manual or a robotised manual/automatic. Here I have a small dilemma. When I was a lot younger there would have been no dilemma, the pure manual would have got my first preference. Now as I am further along the cycle of life, I find I am very attracted to the robotised manual/automatic.

Perhaps the fact that the robotised unit has exhaust emissions of 332 gm/km, compared to 349 gm/km for the pure manual, may make the decision that bit easier. Lower exhaust emissions also indicate a lower fuel consumption, which, given the rocketing price of fuel today, is another factor in its favour.

Here in Ireland the government will love you for buying a R8 5.2 Quattro, as it allows them to rob you of a massive 2,100 Euro in road tax every twelve months. You will really be living in Cloud Cookoo Land if you believe even one brass farthing of that will be used to build or maintain roads !

ue to make its international debut at the Shanghai Motor Show on the 21st April, the Audi Q3 is the third and smallest member of Audi’s Q range of Sport Utility Vehicles. It is due to go on sale in European markets towards the end of 2011. While Quattro all wheel drive is a standard feature of the Q range, this new Q3 will also offer a front wheel drive version. The front wheel drive model is powered by a 2.0 litre, 104 kW diesel engine, driving a six speed manual transmission. It is expected to give a combined cycle fuel consumption of 54 mpg (5.2 lt/100 km).

All Q3 models come with an aluminium/light weight steel body construction. Other standard features are ; automatic stop/start, brake energy regeneration and electro-mechanical power assisted steering systems. Low rolling resistance tyres are fitted as standard.

Off-road abilities are boosted by the Quattro all wheel drive, fitted as standard to most versions, a ground clearance of 170 mm, multi-link front and rear suspensions and an electronic stability programme with an electronic differential lock. This offroad performance will be further assisted by the optional Audi

NCA NATIONAL SURVEY OF COST OF DRIVING LESSONS • Average Price for a 1-hour lesson is €33 • Prices range from €25 to €45 per lesson • Significant savings to be made when purchasing multiple lessons The National Consumer Agency (NCA) published the findings of its latest price survey, which examined the cost of driving lessons and found that the cost of a one-hour lesson ranges from €25-€45. This represents a nationwide average price of €33.

The survey follows the introduction of a new requirement for learner drivers to complete the Essential Driver Training (EDT) programme if their first learner permit was issued on or after 4th April 2011.

The survey looked at the price of a one-hour lesson and the cost for a bundled purchase of five, ten or twelve lessons. Prices were obtained from 130 Road Safety Authority (RSA) approved driving instructors in 12 areas nationwide.

The price of a one-hour lesson ranged from a low of €25, found in Galway City, Tralee, Limerick City and Waterford City, to a high of €45, which was quoted in the Churchtown/Dundrum area of Dublin.

In seven of the twelve areas surveyed the variation between the highest and lowest quotes was €10 or more, reaching as high as €16 in the Churchtown/Dundrum area of Dublin. Three areas, Cork City, Dublin 15 and Dundalk, had price variations between respondents of just €5. The average range between the cheapest and most expensive quote for one 1-hour lesson across all 12 areas surveyed was €9.

On average, discounts of 10% were available when purchasing multiple lessons. Depending on the area, this means that savings of up to €120 on 12 EDT lessons can be made.

Commenting on the survey, Chief Executive of the NCA, Ann Fitzgerald said, “The introduction of the Essential Driver Training programme is a very welcome development in the promotion of road safety. However, there is a cost implication for consumers, especially if you consider that some drivers may require more than the mandatory minimum 12 hours of tuition. Our survey of instructors shows that learner drivers can make significant savings, with variations of up to €16 per lesson.”

The NCA also sought information in relation to the cost of multiple lessons to gauge the level of discounts applied. Discounts offered on buying a number of lessons varied from no discount to 25%. On average a discount of 10% was available. Instead of monetary discounts some instructors offered an extra lesson for free. Given the recent nature of the introduction of the EDT programme, the NCA was unable to obtain a defined price for the 12 EDT lessons from all instructors surveyed. However, based on 42 quotes received, the national average cost to complete the 12 EDT modules was €365. The diesel is also a 2.0 litre design tuned to produce 131 kW. All three are turbocharged, with direct fuel injection. Later a 104 kW, 2.0 litre diesel will be added to the range. This engine and the 126 kW petrol engine will be linked to a six speed manual transmission, while the 131 kW diesel and the 157 kW petrol engine will be mated to the excellent seven speed S-tronic transmission. The top of the range 157 kW petrol engine offers a top speed of 230 kph (143 mph) with 0-100 kph in 6.9 seconds.

The new Q3 is 4385 mm in overall length, 1831 mm wide and stands 1602 mm high. Depending on the market, it will be offered in various trim and specification levels. In addition there will be a wide range of optional extras available.

VOLKSWAGEN JETTA LEXUS LF-GH HYBRID CONCEPT ue to be launched at the New York Motor Show, the Lexus LF-Gh hybrid is a concept of a future luxury grand tourer.

The aim has been to combine style, performance, luxury, and efficiency, with environmental compatibility, into a car that can carry passengers in luxury over long distances, with adequate luggage space, yet still give an inspiring driving experience.

The front end has a uniquely shaped grille that could become a design feature of future Lexus models. Lower air vents at the front are
