SAPS unit needed at Chota Motala and Bombay roads

T

he residents of Northdale humbly ask the Commander of the Mountain Rise Police Station to have a unit at the corner of Chota Motala and Bombay roads. Then, when complaints come, they will

be able to arrest criminals quickly after a crime is committed. Coming all the way from Mountain Rise Police Station the police arrive too late. Burglaries are continuing and increasing. I had a meeting with Colonel

Govender at his office about what is happening in our area and gave him all the details. On 09 May this year an Indian man was stripped naked, and all his belongings stolen at 8.30pm when he went to a shop a day after a teacher was

caught by two blacks. Luckily a car was passing and gave chase. These criminals come after 5 pm until 2 or 3 am. We need police patrolling during those times. There is a vacant house in the corner of Sanjay and Madurai roads

which is used as a hiding place. We need police patrolling in this area. R M Govender

SAPS members should study to be professional

T

he South African Police Services (SAPS) has been portrayed in quite a negative way with the brutality of a taxi driver been dragged, the Marikana killings, and police members losing their jobs over corruption and bribery. In my opinion, I feel that the SAPS should now have members that are educated about their jobs. Members that have studied their degrees in the police service should be given posts as high ranking officers so that proper instructions can be given in tense situations where spontaneous decisions have to

be made and carried out. Members that have years of experience in the police and possess a degree are most of the time working under the supervision of members that have not studied at all, therefore improper instructions are given and carried out. As in any profession, such as a doctor, lawyer, or accountant, a person must study to achieve a degree to start practising in that particular field. If All SAPS members were forced to study in order to be promoted, then all members of the SAPS would be professional and fully educated about their jobs and

what’s required of them. It’s veryimportant that SAPS members are accurate and confident without a doubt in their minds that everything they do is correct because other people’s lives are in their hands. This can only be achieved if every SAPS member has a diploma or degree to their name. Those that have already studied and have the knowledge should be on top, guiding supervising, empowering and leading regardless of race and sex. That alone would surely make a difference in the SAPS! Shocked by learners’ rowdiness at university open day

O

n Saturday the 18 May I took my daughter to the University Of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville Campus, for their open day. It was shocking to observe disrespect and lack of consideration for others. There were various announcements regarding the rowdiness and appealing for silence.

Certainly this was not what one expected from representatives of educational institutions. Let’s all exercise respect and the principle of working together for each other. Selva Govender Bombay Heights
