l Torneo Internacional del Sábalo organizado por el Club de Regatas Corona de Tampico, es uno de los torneos de pesca más antiguos e importantes de la república mexicana. El primero de ellos se llevó a cabo el 19 de marzo de 1942 a iniciativa de la señora María Buerón de Bárcena. Su idea atrajo la atención de Mr. Leroy H. Dorsey de Chicago Illinois EUA, quien además de ser presidente honorario del Southwest Pass Tarpoon Rodeo, conocía nuestro medio por tener ocho años de pescar en Tampico. Buscando apoyo para concretar la organización de este torneo, la señora Buerón de Bárcena, acudió al señor Augusto Eichelmann, uno de los principales directores del Club de Regatas Corona y a los conocedores de la pesca Rodolfo Q. Peralta y Joaquín Cicero integrándose el comité de la siguiente forma: Presidentes Honorarios, Luis Carrera y Fred Armstrong; Presidente Ejecutivo, Rodolfo Q. Peralta; Secretario, Miguel Barrenechea; Oficiales del Torneo Manuel Guzmán Willis y Joaquín F. Cicero. A la Sra. Bárcena se le dio el nombramiento de Vicepresidenta, mismo que declinó, ofreciendo su cooperación en todo lo que ella pudiera ayudar. El campamento de este primer torneo se ubicó en Tamós Veracruz. A lo largo de todos estos años, se han logrado imponer récords como el obtenido en 1966 por el Sr. Emilio “Gallo” Moses quien pescó un sábalo de 92.100 kg, récord que rompió 33 años más tarde, en agosto de 1999 el Luciano Gómez Loredo, al capturar un ejemplar de 93.800 kg. En agosto de 2011 durante la LXIV edición del Torneo del Sábalo, Carlos Alberto Bortoni Rhodes impuso un nuevo récord con un enorme sábalo de 102.700 kg.

he Tarpon International Fishing Tournament is organized by the Club de Regatas Corona of Tampico and is one of the oldest and most important fishing tournaments in Mexico. The first one took place on march 19th, 1942 promoted by Mrs. Maria Buerón de Bárcena. Her idea caught the attention of Mr. Leroy H. Dorsey, from Chicago Illinois, who in addition of being Honorary President of the Southwest Pass Tarpon Rodeo had knowledge of our locations by having fishing for several years in Tampico. Looking for support to complete and bring closure to the organization of this tournament; Mrs. Buerón de Bárcena, went to see Mr. Augusto Eichelmann, one of the main directors of the Club de Regatas Corona and a fan with great knowledge of fishing, Rodolfo Peralta and Joaquín Cicero that led to the formation of the Committee as follows: Honorary Presidents, Luis Carrera and Fred Armstrong; Executive President, Rodolfo Q. Peralta; Secretary, Miguel Barrenechea; Officers of the Tournament, Manuel Guzmán Willis and Joaquín F. Cicero. Mrs. María Buerón de Bárcena was offered the position of Vice President that she kindly declined while offering her full support to the event. The campground for the first tournament was located at Tamós, Veracruz. Through all these years of this tournament and important records have been obtained, like the one by Emilio “Gallo” Moses, who in 1966 caught a tarpon weighting 93.800 kg (206lbs). In august, 2011, during the LXIV Edition of the tournament, Carlos Alberto Bortoni Rhodes set a new record by catching an specimen weighting a record breaking 102.700 kg (226lbs).
