ne popular cake is named not directly after the Black Forest (Schwarzwald) mountain range in southwestern Germany but rather from the specialty liquor of that region, known as Schwarzwälder Kirsch(wasser) and distilled from tart cherries. This is the ingredient, with its distinctive cherry pit flavor and alcoholic content, that gives the cake its flavor. Cherries, cream, and Kirschwasser were first combined in the form of a dessert in which cooked cherries were served with cream and Kirschwasser, while a cake combining cherries, cookies or biscuits and cream (but without Kirschwasser) probably originated in Germany.

FIDM’s 5th floor windows celebrate the surreal work of Elsa Schiaparelli

In the thirties, her peak creative period, her salon overflowed with the wild, the whimsical, and even the ridiculous. Many of her madcap designs could be pulled off only by a woman of great substance and style: Gold ruffles sprouted from the fingers of chameleon-green suede gloves; a paleblue satin evening gown—modeled by Madame Crespi in Vogue—had a stiff overskirt of Rhodophane (a transparent, glasslike modern material); a smart black suit jacket had red lips for pockets. Handbags, in the form of music boxes, tinkled tunes like “Rose Marie, I Love You”; others fastened with padlocks. Monkey fur and zippers (newfangled in the thirties) were everywhere. love of trompe l’oeil can be traced to the faux-bow sweater that kick-started Schiaparelli’s career and brought her quirky style to the masses.

Blake Lively Gushes Over… The Cheesecake Factory

I

n a recent interview, Blake Lively discussed over her favorite holiday foods (cookies), the best pizza in New York City but perhaps most shockingly, she gushed repeatedly over a restaurant synonymous with suburban malls: The Cheesecake Factory.

“Cheesecake Factory is great,” the 26-year-old former “Gossip Girl” star told New York magazine. “It should have Michelin stars.”

Lively, who is launching her own website soon, added that while she’s not sure if she’s ever been

on a date (yes, she’s married to Ryan Reynolds, though she explained, “I’ve always dated people I’ve been friends with for a long time”), she’d ask to go to The Cheesecake Factory. The only issue? The closest one to her home is across state lines, in New Jersey.

“I would go to New Jersey for Cheesecake Factory and Grand Lux,” she said. “[Grand Lux] is owned by Cheesecake Factory. It’s not fancy in price or menu. There’s just a lot more gold leafing.”

LAKE Lively is bored with acting — that’s why she’s launching a lifestyle website.

The Gossip Girl star opened up about her new project in an interview with New York Magazine.

“I don’t know if it’s a lifestyle site. I was very vague about it. And because of that, everyone was filling in the blanks about what other sites it could be like,” she said.

“It’s not accurate. I’m creating a brand that I felt the need for. I was on my show for so long that I really wanted to break from acting, because it lost its excitement for me in a way, because it was such a job.

“I never lost my appreciation for though. I just felt like I didn’t have as much to offer because I got used to it. I wanted to explore other passions. At first, I didn’t know what I wanted to do.

“The company came from something separate when I had that free time. It’s a space I wanted that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I’m still being very vague, intentionally. But I’m really, really excited.

By the time it launches, we will have developed it for two years. So it’s a lot of time, energy, efforts, resources, working with amazing people.

“I think Goop is amazing. Pinterest I’m obsessed with. Etsy is not a lifestyle site, but it’s pretty amazing what they’ve done. But I think it’s also neat, all the blogs.

“They don’t need a huge company behind them.You can just be a fan of fashion, art, or a fan of all things.

There are so many Tumblrs I like to follow.”

vedon was born in New York City, to a Jewish family. He was the son of Jacob Israel Avedon, a Russian-born immigrant who after working menial jobs started a successful retail dress business on Fifth Avenue called Avedon’s Fifth Avenue.

His mother Anna, came from a family that owned a dress manufacturing business.She had encouraged his love of fashion and art. At the age of 12, Richard Avedon’s interests sparked in the photography world when he joined the Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA) Camera Club. He would use his family’s Kodak Box Brownie to feed his curiosity of the world around him but also as a means to retreat from his personal life. His father was a critical and remote disciplinarian who insisted that physical strength, education and money prepared one for the

world. His younger sister Louise became his first muse as she was a beautiful subject to capture on film. Louise had struggled her teenage years in psychiatric treatment becoming more and more withdrawn from reality and eventually was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

These early influences of fashion and family would later shape his life and career through his love to capture tragic beauty in a photo.

Richard Avedon attended DeWitt Clinton High School in Bedford Park, Bronx, where he worked on the school paper The Magpie with James Baldwin from 1937 until 1940. In addition to his continued interest in fashion and photography, Avedon also developed an affinity for poetry in high school and during his senior year, in 1941,

Avedon was named “Poet Laureate of New York City High Schools. After graduating from DeWitt in 1941, Avedon enrolled at Columbia University, to study philosophy and poetry but dropped out after one year.

Avedown then started as a photographer for the Merchant Marines in 1942, taking identification pictures of the crewmen with his Rolleiflex camera given to him by his father as a going-away present. From 1944 to 1950, he studied photography with Alexey Brodovitch at his Design Laboratory at the New School for Social Research.
