MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) -- The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, voted 18–5 on Tuesday night to return the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Z. Duterte to the House of Representatives, rejecting calls for outright dismissal while leaving the case technically alive for further action.

The motion, introduced by Senator-judge Alan Peter Cayetano, was presented as a compromise to preserve constitutional integrity without prematurely terminating the case.

The motion explicitly stated that the return of the articles would not constitute dismissal or final judgment.

“The effect of this is only about four days. It won’t delay the proceedings and will even help the 20th Congress,” Cayetano told reporters in an ambush interview, saying the move allows the

next Congress to act with greater clarity and legitimacy.

Those who voted against the motion were Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III, and Senators Risa Hontiveros, Nancy Binay, Grace Poe and Sherwin Gatchalian.

Hontiveros delivered a strong dissent, criticizing the language of the motion as vague and legally problematic.

“The wording of the approved motion introduces unnecessary ambiguity to the already politically charged proceedings,” she said.

“Wala pong remand o return sa konstitusyon. Ang obligation natin (There is no remand or return in the constitution. Our obligation), try and decide,” she added.

She argued that if clarifications were needed, the Senate could have asked

the House prosecution panel to file a formal compliance instead of sending the complaint back.

Votes for remand

Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada, who voted in the affirmative, said his decision was anchored in experience and a commitment to constitutional order.

“That’s why I feel strongly about following each step in the Constitution. It’s a sensitive matter that I take to heart,” he said, recalling the aborted impeachment of his father, former president Joseph Estrada.

Estrada emphasized that while impeachment is inherently political, the process must adhere to rules to avoid being arbitrary or agenda-driven.

PBBM’s focus on serving Filipinos, not VP Sara impeachment

MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) -- The priority of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is to meet the Filipino people’s needs, Malacañang said on Tuesday, amid the looming impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Z. Duterte.

Duterte’s fate is solely up to Congress, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said at the Palace briefing Tuesday, echoing Marcos’ stance.

Castro issued the statement in response to calls of several groups, including the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, to stop delaying Duterte’s impeachment trial.

“May kanya-kanya po talagang paniniwala, may kanya-kanyang opinyon ang bawat grupo, ang bawat tao. Katulad po ng sinabi namin, ang public servant dapat po talaga ay mayroong accountability, may transparency (Every group, every person has their own belief and opinion. As we said, a public

servant should have accountability and transparency),” she said.

“So, iginagalang po ng Pangulo ang bawat opinyon ng bawat tao at ng bawat grupo. Pero muli, ang Pangulo ang pagtutuunan po talaga ay ang pagtatrabaho para sa taumbayan (So, the President respects every opinion of every person and every group. But again, the President’s focus is on working for the people),” Castro added.

She advised the public to just let the Senate do its job and let the process take its course.

In an interview with Palace reporters, Marcos said he believes that Senate President Francis Escudero wants a “peaceful” transition of the trial from the 19th Congress to the 20th Congress.

The Senate is expected to take further action on Duterte’s impeachment case when it resumes session Wednesday. (MNS)

PBBM wants aid to Filipinos affected by LA protests

MANILA, June 11 (Mabuhay) --

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. directed concerned agencies to assist Filipinos affected by the Los Angeles (LA) protests in the wake of successive raids by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Malacañang said Tuesday.

In a press briefing, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Briefer Claire Castro said the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Consulate General in LA continue to monitor the immigration raids and protests.

“At ang tagubilin po ng Pangulo, bigyan ng assistance ang bawat Pilipino, lalong lalo na po kung sila’y naka-base o nagtatrabaho sa ibang bansa (And the President’s instructions are to provide assistance to every Filipino, especially if they are based or working abroad),” Castro said.

Reports said a Filipino national identified as Rolando Enriquez was among the immigrants arrested in raids conducted by ICE agents.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Sunday confirmed the apprehension of Enriquez, a 55-year-old Filipino who is allegedly an “illegal alien from the Philippines.”

“His criminal history includes burglary in Ontario, CA (Canada) with a sentence of four years in prison, sexual penetration with a foreign object with force and assault with intent to commit rape in Pomona, CA with a sentence of 37 years in prison,” the US DHS said.

In an advisory on Monday, the Philippine Consulate General in LA advised Filipinos to exercise caution and vigilance, in view of the ongoing immigration protests in downtown Los Angeles.

They are also advised to “avoid any crowd build-ups that may lead to disturbances.” (MNS)

Senator Francis Tolentino, meanwhile, clarified that his affirmative vote was “subject to a continuing firm stand” that the acts of the 19th Congress cannot be carried into the 20th.

“Naniniwala po ako na hindi po talaga pwede at dapat tumawid (I firmly believe that it really cannot and should not carry over),” he said, referencing the transition between congressional sessions.

Senator Ronald Dela Rosa, who earlier called for the complaint’s dismissal due to alleged constitutional infirmities, expressed gratitude following the vote.

“18-5 Returned!!! Thank you, Lord! I’m not trained nor equipped for this kind of task, but I am blessed with a

clean heart and a fighting spirit that won’t stop. So blessed to be guided by the Holy Spirit,” he wrote on Facebook.

Case not kicked out

The decision means that the House may opt to refile, revise or affirm its impeachment complaint in the next Congress.

Cayetano said the Senate will ask the House to certify whether the complaint violates the constitutional one-year bar on multiple impeachment attempts, a point of contention raised in Dela Rosa’s initial motion to dismiss.

Cayetano acknowledged that while some senators wanted to dismiss the complaint outright, the return serves as a middle ground.

“Most of us do not want to dismiss it but agree that we have to look into the facts kung totoo o hindi na viniolate ang constitution (if the constitution was indeed violated),” he said. (MNS)

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Tuesday urged the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (FFCCCII) to help in enhancing the bilateral relations with China and promoting the Philippines as a “dependable” economic partner.

Marcos made the call, as he led the oath-taking of 265 newly elected FFCCCII officers at the federation’s office in Binondo, City of Manila.

“You are uniquely positioned to help deepen our international partnerships, particularly, of course, with China. Stronger ties mean better trade, greater investments, and enhanced collaboration,” he said.

“Use your platform to showcase the Philippines as a dependable partner for economic growth. So, as you embark on this new chapter, know that you do not walk alone. This government stands with you,” Marcos added.

The President also called on the FFCCCII to empower small and medium-sized businesses, saying helping them is crucial in uplifting the entire economy and the entire nation.

He said the government reforms such as the Green Lanes for Strategic Investments and the CREATE MORE Act are key to shaping a business landscape that is “agile, transparent, and future-ready.”

“This time, free from red tape and bureaucratic delays. All these initiatives send a clear and resounding message: The Philippines is open for business and partnerships that uplift lives and transform communities,” Marcos said.

Founded in 1954, the FFCCCII is the largest organization of Chinese-Filipino businessmen and a private sector partner of the government in national development, advocating for business and economic growth while supporting various philanthropic and civic initia-

tives.

The federation’s recent projects include the lighting of the historic Jones Bridge and the ongoing beautification efforts in the Binondo Chinatown district.

During the event, the FFCCCII also turned over to Marcos a scale model of a two-classroom school building, reaffirming its commitment to social responsibility.

The donation is part of the federation’s long-running “Operation: Barrio Schools” Program which has constructed over 6,500 public school buildings nationwide to address educational gaps in underserved communities.

Marcos expressed gratitude to the Filipino-Chinese community for its commitment to turn over 250 units of two-classroom school buildings in 2026.

PrimeWater vows to fiX Bulacan water woes before class opening -- Palace MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) -- Villar-owned PrimeWater Infrastructure Corp. has pledged to resolve the water supply problem in Bulacan province before school opening, Malacañang said Wednesday.

The commitment was made after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. directed the Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) to conduct an immediate investigation into the lack of stable water supply in public schools he inspected in Malolos and San Miguel towns in Bulacan.

In a press briefing, Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said PrimeWater and the City of Malolos Water District (CMWD) have convened a meeting to address the water service failure in the province.

Castro said there will be repair works in two affected villages starting Friday, following the dialogue between PrimeWater and the CMWD.

“Nangako po ang PrimeWater na ire-repair ang pump station by June 13, 2025 at makikipag-coordinate po sila sa drainage contractor para po maisaayos din po. Ito po ay sa pagitan ng CMWD at PrimeWater para marestore po ‘yung damage mainline (PrimeWater promised to repair the pump station by June 13, 2025 and they will coordinate with

the drainage contractor to fix it as well. This is between CMWD and PrimeWater to restore the damaged mainline),” she said.

“Water is expected to return to normal levels upon completion of the repair and restoration of damaged pipelines before school opening. So, abangan po natin ang magiging trabaho ng PrimeWater kung tutupad sila sa kanilang pangako (let’s wait and see what PrimeWater will do if they fulfill their promise),” she added.

Castro called on the public to give PrimeWater a chance to address the issue.

“Tignan po muna natin. Bigyan natin sila ng chance. Although marami nang nagrereklamo sa PrimeWater, bigyan muna natin ng chance dahil ang sabi naman po nila ay sila’y naglilingkod sa bayan (Let’s see. Give them a chance. Although many are already complaining about PrimeWater, let’s give it a chance because they say they serve the people),” she said.

The LWUA, upon Marcos’ directive, was given at least 48 hours to submit an initial report identifying the cause of the supply failures and the officials responsible, and outlining measures to restore services before the start of classes next week. (MNS)

Possible dismissal of Sara impeachment case won’t affect PBBM -- Palace

MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) -- The possible dismissal of the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte will have no negative impact on President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Malacañang said on Wednesday.

Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stressed that the President has nothing to do with the impeachment complaint filed against Duterte.

In a Palace press briefing, Castro maintained that Duterte’s case now lies in the hands of Congress.

“So, wala po tayong nakikitang anumang negative impact na mangyayari sa Pangulo dahil hindi po siya kasama sa anumang pagtatagisan ng talino sa debate dito sa Senado (we do not see any negative impact that will happen to the President because he is not part of any intellectual debate in the Senate),” she said.

“So, kung ito man ay ma-dismiss, sabi nga po natin, taumbayan po ang huhusga sa Senado kung ano po ang ginawa nila (even if this is dismissed, as we said, the people will judge the Senate for what they did) during the impeachment trial.”

While Marcos is not focused on the impeachment trial, he agrees that public servants must uphold transparency and accountability, Castro said.

Castro also emphasized that the public would see “who is following the procedure or who is playing with the procedure to avoid or to continue the impeachment trial.”

“So, kapag sinabi po ng Pangulo na proseso, dapat sundin ang batas, dapat sundin ang Konstitusyon (when the President says that the process, the law must be followed, the Constitution must be followed),” she said.

“Huwag paglaruan ang mga procedure. Iyong naaayon lang po ang paggamit ng procedure at rule of law para ito sa taumbayan, para sa interes ng taumbayan (Do not toy with the procedures. The procedure and rule of law must be used accordingly, for the people, for the people’s interest).” (MNS)

ICC plenary rejects Duterte move to disqualify 2 judges

MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) -- The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) plenary of judges unanimously rejected the motion of former president Rodrigo R. Duterte to disqualify Judges Reine Adélaïde Sophia Alapini-Gansou and María del Socorro Flores Liera from ruling on the challenge to the court’s jurisdiction over his case.

ICC President Judge Tomoko Akane said the plenary of judges convened on June 9 to consider Duterte’s request.

“The plenary of judges, acting unanimously, decided to reject the Application. A fully reasoned decision of the plenary will follow,” he wrote.

Duterte’s defense team requested the ICC to disqualify the judges from adjudicating on the issue of ICC jurisdiction, pointing out the two had “prior

involvement in the most substantive legal question” in the case.

“The question of jurisdiction and the exercise thereof is a contentious -- if not the most contentious -- issue in the Case,” Duterte’s defense lawyer Nicholas Kaufman wrote in May.

“Deciding this matter in favor of the Defense will have far-reaching consequences on the future of the Situation,” he added.

Alapini-Gansou, Liera and presiding judge of the ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I Iulia Antoanella Motoc signed the arrest warrant against Duterte.

The former chief executive, currently in custody of the ICC, is set to appear at the confirmation of charges hearing on Sept. 23. (MNS)

CA approves Lazaro, Aliling appointments as DFA, DHSUD chiefs

MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) -- The Commission on Appointments (CA) on Wednesday confirmed the ad interim appointments of incoming Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Parreño-Lazaro and Human Settlements

Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling, along with more than 150 other officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The appointments were ratified during a plenary session presided over by Senate President Francis Escudero, who also chairs the commission.

The confirmations followed back-toback hearings by the CA’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense panels.

Lazaro, a career diplomat with more than four decades of experience, pledged to strengthen the country’s global position ahead of its chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2026 and its bid for a United Nations Security Council seat for 2027–2028.

“Our foreign policy must be clearly understood and benefit the very people it serves,” Lazaro said, adding that she would also prioritize improving DFA’s consular services and ensuring that diplomacy remains grounded in the aspirations of Filipinos.

In his sponsorship speech, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada lauded Lazaro as a “paragon of excellence in the Philippine Foreign Service,” citing her past roles as ambassador to France, Switzerland, and permanent delegate to UNESCO, as well as her leadership in regional diplomacy and negotiations in the West Philippine Sea.

“She has served our nation with competence, dignity, and resolve,” Estrada said.

Aliling, meanwhile, laid out a reform agenda for DHSUD centered on expanding the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Program (4PH) to include horizontal developments, rental housing, and free shelter schemes.

He emphasized digital transformation, streamlining of regulatory procedures, and stronger consumer protections.

“The department will prioritize the most vulnerable sectors,” Aliling told the CA.

Senator Joel Villanueva, who sponsored Aliling’s confirmation, described him as a “visionary leader” and a “trailblazer” in the construction industry, citing both his private sector achievements and his previous role as DHSUD undersecretary.

“Secretary Aliling embodies the qualities of a dedicated public servant and a compassionate advocate for the Filipino people,” Villanueva said, highlighting his 8-Point Agenda for the department, which includes housing affordability, disaster resilience, stakeholder dialogue, and anti-corruption efforts.

Also confirmed were 59 foreign service officials whose nominations were endorsed by the CA Foreign Affairs Committee.

Estrada, who chairs the panel, said the agenda had been expanded three times to accommodate additional batches of diplomats.

The CA National Defense Committee also approved the appointments of 119 generals, flag officers, and senior AFP officials. (MNS)

Comelec eyes posting SOCEs online for public scrutiny

MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is considering posting the statements of contributions and expenditures (SOCEs) of candidates, party-list groups and political parties online for public scrutiny.

In a Viber message on Wednesday, Comelec Chairperson George Garcia said the SOCEs may be posted online in “about two weeks, because it needs the approval of the Department of Information and Communications Technology for the vulnerability assessment.”

“If the public sees the SOCEs and if there is something wrong or lacking in their submission, they should inform our Political and Finance Affairs Department so that it can be immediately studied and investigated,” Garcia said.

Candidates, party-list groups and political parties that participated in the May 12 midterm elections have until June 11 to submit their SOCEs.

Based on Comelec data as of 8 a.m., 25 senatorial bets, 10 political parties and 64 party-list groups have so far filed their respective SOCEs. There were 64 senatorial candi-

dates, 28 political parties and 154 party-list groups that participated in the May 12 elections.

Under the law, SOCEs must be filed within 30 days from the date of the elections.

Garcia said failure to file SOCEs for two consecutive elections may result in the perpetual disqualification of the candidate to hold public office.

“If a candidate fails to file for two consecutive elections, they will face perpetual disqualification to hold public office. They will not be able to hold government positions, even appointive or elective positions. This is not possible. Unless the president grants clemency or pardon,” he said.

Aside from an administrative case, those who failed to file their SOCEs may also face a criminal case, the poll body chief said.

“They will also face a criminal case because failure to file is a criminal case that must be filed with the Law Department… and if they fail to file for the first time, there is a penalty of an administrative fine imposed on them,” Garcia said. (MNS)

Hontiveros raises red flags on Senate’s remand of impeachment articles MANILA, June 12 (Mabuhay) -- Senator Risa Hontiveros on Wednesday said the Senate’s move to return the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte to the House of Representatives has not terminated the process, but warned that it risks triggering a constitutional deadlock and undermining public trust.

In a radio interview, Hontiveros expressed frustration over the 18-5 vote that remanded the impeachment complaint, calling it a step backward after the Senate had already convened as an impeachment court.

“Hindi naman kami PBA (Philippine Basketball Association) finals. Impeachment court kami. Sa halip na umusad, umurong (We’re not the PBA finals. We’re an impeachment court. Instead of moving forward, we went backward),” she said, questioning why the process had to backtrack after long delays.

Hontiveros, one of five senators who voted against the motion, said the justification for returning the articles — to seek clarification from the House on the one-year bar rule — was unnecessary and could have been addressed directly with the House prosecutors through certification or compliance.

“Napakadaling gawin. Certification lang ‘yan (It’s very easy to do. It’s just a certification),” she said.

She warned that forcing the House to act on a motion it never initiated could lead to a constitutional standoff.

“Hindi na po kailangang ibalik pa sa House… kung gusto lang mag-certify ng readiness ang 20th Congress — na, by the way, ay hindi pa nage-exist (There’s no need to return it to the House... unless the 20th Congress wants to certify its readiness — which, by the way, does not yet exist),” she added.

The senator also pointed out that the motion’s “vague” language — which its sponsors insisted was not a dismissal — contained implications of suspension, dismissal, and lack of jurisdiction. This, she said, could signal an intentional delay.

“Actually, napapatanong tuloy ako, hindi ba gaslighting ‘yung nangyari? Pinaikot-ikot ang mga salita para malito tayo (Actually, it makes me wonder — wasn’t that gaslighting? Twisting words around just to confuse us)?” she said.

Asked whether the Senate’s move could be deemed unconstitutional, Hontiveros said such a question, if formally raised, would be up to the Supreme Court.

But Hontiveros emphasized that she and Senators Aquilino Pimentel III, Grace Poe, Nancy Binay, and Sherwin Gatchalian — will continue to push for the trial to proceed. (MNS)

“It’s not just a specific dream role, at least I’m doing something na may social awareness. Like itong show namin ni Jessy, it’s about scamming. Because sa hirap siguro ng buhay ngayon sa Pinas, with everything happening — economy, inflation, and the hardships of life — people are tempted and desperate to earn,” he shared. “But there’s no easy way, maniwala kayo. Sofia Andres’ artwork now part of an art exhibit

MANILA, June 10 (Mabuhay) -Kapamilya actress Sofia Andres has embraced a new chapter in her creative journey as she takes part in the “Bridging the Gap” art exhibit at Power Plant Mall in Makati City.

On Instagram, the actress shared heartfelt reflections about her transformation as an artist and mother, and how her personal experiences shaped her art.

“Once upon a time, there was a simple girl — quiet, observant, often misunderstood. I came out of nowhere. People knew me as an actress, but I always asked myself… if I’m not her, then who am I?” Sofia wrote.

Sofia revealed that she had been previously asked to participate in art exhibits but felt it wasn’t the right time.

“I’ve been offered to join exhibits before, but something in me always whispered, not yet. Now I understand why. Time doesn’t just heal — it prepares,” she said.

Sofia shared that she found deeper inspiration and motivation in creating art as motherhood gave her a new lens through which to view the world and her own identity.

“It took becoming a mother to feel this kind of depth… To gather emotion, wisdom, patience, and a knowing that can’t be taught — only lived,” she expressed.

The Kapamilya actress went on, “I’ve been through pain, silence, breakthroughs, and breakdowns. But I kept going. I worked quietly, and I worked hard — even when no one was watching.”

Sofia posted a photo of herself alongside one of her paintings, which depicts a young girl. Sofia described the artwork as a reflection of her present self.

“This painting is a reflection of where I live now — not a city, but a world I created. My world. Where women rule with softness and strength. Where art is not a performance, but a pulse,” she stated.

Sofia concluded her post with a message of gratitude to the team behind the art exhibit in making her dreams

come true.

“And this… is just the beginning. @ joannapreyslermanila @miodizon @ raulsfrancisco @monicapdizon thank you so much for this opportunity. It’s a dream come true,” she added.

Sofia is part of the Bridging the Gap exhibit which aims to promote emerging Filipino artists and provide a platform for storytellers, creatives, and art lovers. Fellow actress Solenn Heussaff also is part of the exhibit, which showcases diverse works from both established and emerging Filipino talents.

Earlier in March, Sofia offered a glimpse into her artistic evolution.

“I wanna tell you something… I am not afraid. I have been through so much—loved, betrayed, broken, healed, and fallen again. But no matter what, I rise. Because I am strong. Because I am a mother & life is just so beautiful.”

“Stepping away from showbiz, even for a while, allowed me to see life without filters. No pretensions, just truth. I focused on Zoe (her daughter). I faced the real world. And in the process, I found something I didn’t know I was looking for,” she wrote.

Despite having no formal training, Sofia discovered a new purpose through painting.

“My hands can express what my heart feels. I never studied painting, but I know this is where I’m meant to be. I am a work in progress, but I’m ready to grow, to learn, to create. This is my journey, and I want to share it with you. I hope you’ll be part of it. I’ll be posting my art, my progress, my soul. Here’s to new beginnings,” she added. (MNS)

The current measles outbreak has targeted North Dakota, having its first case since 2011. The count went up to 1001 on May 9, 2025, more than 3 times in all of 2024, reports the CDC. More cases are expected. The 3-month outbreak in Texas owns the vast majority of cases, with 702 confirmed. This viral infection has spread to New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Two unvaccinated children died from measles-related disease in West Texas, the epicenter. And adult in New Mexico, who was unvaccinated, died from the complications of Measles.

Many other states are reporting cases of measles. In 2019, there were 1,261 cases of measles in 31 states. Unvaccinated people, when exposed, are very prone to develop measles. Misinformation, confusion, complacency all account for the lowered vaccination rate and for the outbreak.

Measles is a very contagious viral illness that mostly affects unvaccinated children but adults who are unvaccinated are also potential victims. It is more serious among adults and babies. Measles, a potential killer, is easily preventable by a vaccine.

Shoes and backpains

A great news of relief to those with back pains. Two studies presented at the 2025 World Congress on Osteoarthritis in Incheon, South Korea, have this report: “A shoe-based biomechanical intervention worn for a short time each day may achieve greater improvements in low back pain and greater reductions in the risk for total knee replacement surgery than standard physical therapy, according to two studies.”

The US FDA has cleared this shoebased intervention, “which alters the foot’s pressure points to reduce loads, minimize symptoms, and promote neuromuscular control training using adjustable, convex pods under the sole, according to the researchers.”

Measles can kill

Those special “biomechanical” shoes will be heaven-sent to those 619 million with back pains, 40 million with hip pains, or, the 654 million with knee pains, around the world, all from osteoarthritis

Simple urine test

Early detection of prostate cancer is still a huge clinical challenge today because of lack of reliable biomarkers. This disease is highly treatable when diagnosed in its early stage.

A new study, posted in the journal Cancer Research, reports that early-stage prostatic cancer can be detected using s new simple urine test. The new set of urine-based biomarkers can accurately find both the presence and severity of prostatic cancer. “The study combined artificial intelligence and detailed genetic analysis and could potentially offer an alternative to current PSA testing,” said the report.

Cancer of the prostate is one of the most frequent cancers in men and early detection leads to high rate of surgical cure. This new simple urine test will lead to early detection which translate to saving maximum of lives, not possible before.

Plant-based diet

There is no question that what we eat affects our health and longevity to a significant extent. For a healthy diet, half of our plate should have plant-based foods, such as colorful vegetables and fruits, a quarter with whole grain (rice, quinoa, bread, preferably non-wheat, and a quarter with protein (either plantbased or animal based). Most veggies contain polyphenols, health antioxidants, which protects body cells from damages, reduces inflammation, has neuro-protection for the brain, and lowers the risk for common chronic diseases. It is also good for our microbiome, gut-health, especially some fermented foods.

The less red meat we eat the better. Avoiding processed foods (like those

in a Deli, bacon, sausages, etc.) could lower our risk for cancers. And so with grilled foods (meat or veggies) with charcoal-burnt surfaces, which should be trimmed or scraped away. Red meat consumption is linked to increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, stroke) and cancer. Plant-based diet, together with fish, is a healthy diet.

About 20-35 percent of our total calories should be fats, healthy fats, from olives, extra virgin cold-processed olive oil, mild olive oil for cooking, avocados, seeds, and nuts.

Finally, diet-wise, let’s stay away from foods containing gluten and lectin, which increases the risk for gut issues and inflammation, creating havoc to our microbiome (bacterial balance in our gut), which is fundamental of our health and well-being.

We used to think oat meal and soy products (tofu, etc.) are healthy food items for everyone. In some people, oatmeal causes blood sugar spikes, the phytic acid in oat hinders mineral absorption, and the oats has gluten in them and some could contain mold toxins.

Choose gluten-free oat meal, soak them first for a few minutes before cooking to reduce phytic acid and buy whole, unflavored old-fashioned (not instant) oat meals, preferably steel-cut.

Shingles vaccine

Thirty-three percent (one out of 3) adults around the world will develop shingles, actually a re-activation of the varicella-zoster virus in them, which causes chickenpox, to which they have been exposed to before, most during their childhood. Shingles infection could lead serious, chronic, bothersome complications. Those who are 50 and over can significantly benefit from the shingles vaccine, which provides 90 percent protection.

Lately, studies revealed that shingles vaccine also lower the risk for dementia and cardiovascular ailments, like heart

attack and stroke, which protection could last up to eight years.

Home apnea test

Medical, engineering, technological progress is not only mind-boggling but makes life more comfortable and convenient for the world. For those with sleep apnea (prolonged breath-holding, with oxygen deficient blood, and waking us gasping for breath) no longer has to go to the Sleep laboratory in Hospitals for a Sleep Study, where dozens of sensors are connected to you while you spend the night in that hospital.

The amazing miniaturization of sophisticated technological devices now allows people to conduct a basic sleep test in their own bed at home. Besides you, insurance companies and physicians love it too. The home sleep apnea test costs at least 20 times cheaper than the Sleep Study in a hospital. And definitely more convenient for everyone worldwide.

Summer is a time for fun but it’s never the wrong time to be thinking about taxes – and some summer activities could have an impact. Here are a few summertime activities and tips on how taxpayers should consider them for tax season.

Marriage

Wedding season is upon us, and newlyweds can make their tax �iling easier by taking two simple steps now: First, report any name change to the Social Security Administration.

Next, notify the United States Postal Service, employers and the IRS of any address change. To of�icially change their mailing address with the IRS, taxpayers must complete and submit Form 8822, Change of Address. See page 2 of the form for detailed instructions. Summer daY camp

If a taxpayer is sending a child to summer day camp, the cost may count toward the Child and Dependent Care Credit.

Business travel

Kids may have the summer off, but parents generally don’t – and business travel happens year-round. Tax deductions are available for certain people who travel away from their home or main place of work for business reasons. Whether a business traveler is away for a few nights or all summer long, it’s important for them to remember the tax rules related to business travel.

Part-time Work

While summertime and part-time workers may not earn enough to owe federal income tax, they should �ile a tax return to get any refund they may be owed. Part-time and seasonal workers can visit IRS.gov to learn more about who should �ile a tax return. Some taxpayers earn summer income with a side hustle or doing gig work. They can visit the Gig Economy Tax Center at IRS.gov to learn how participating in the gig economy can affect their taxes. Home improvements

The IRS has information to help taxpayers take advantage of tax credits for home improvements. If taxpayers make quali�ied energy ef�icient improvements to their home after Jan. 1, 2023, they may qualify for a tax credit up to $3,200. These types of improvements include Energy Ef�icient Home Improvement Credits for things like water heaters, exterior windows and doors and heating and air conditioning installations. Residential Clean Energy Credits are available for taxpayers who install solar water heaters, fuel cells and battery storage or solar, wind and geothermal power generation. Mediation can help taxpayers resolve tax issues

Mediation – also known as alternative dispute resolution – can help taxpayers resolve tax issues early and ef�iciently.

The process provides taxpayers a faster, more collaborative and costeffective approach to case resolution. The traditional appeal process is still available for taxpayers who choose it.

Mediation might be right for a taxpayer if:

The taxpayer wants to resolve the dispute at the earliest possible stage of their audit.

The taxpayer doesn’t have many disputed issues.

The taxpayer gave the IRS information to support their position.

The IRS is still considering the taxpayer’s case and issues remain unresolved.

Mediation is:

Voluntary for both parties.

Nonbinding, meaning each party retains 100% control over whether to settle the case. No one can force either party to do something they don’t agree to do.

Effective when both parties have a desire to resolve the disputed issue.

A chance to avoid a lengthy appeal process or costly litigation.

Mediation is not:

Required by either party.

A replacement for the audit or collection process.

A process in which the parties in the dispute offer arguments directly to the mediator hoping to “win.”

Effective if either party believes the only way the dispute will get resolved is if the other party concedes or gives up on its position.

A time to present new information or raise new issues.

An opportunity to try and get a more favorable outcome or delay the examination or collection process.

Fast Track Settlement – when the parties can choose to seek mediation for unresolved issues in the examination process.

Philippine Independence Day, also known as Araw ng Kalayaan, is celebrated on June 12. This date commemorates the declaration of Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. It was proclaimed by Filipino revolutionary forces general Emilio Aguinaldo on June 12, 1898, in Cavite el Viejo (presentday Kawit, Cavite), Philippines. The Filipino flag was unfurled for the first time on this day June 12 in 1898 at an inspiring celebration, which also featured the first public playing of the Philippines national anthem. It wasn’t until 1962 that thenPresident Diosdado Macapagal made it a public holiday through a presidential proclamation. Some Filipino organizations and communities across the United States host events on other dates as part of a broader Independence Day festival that coincide with other special cultural events. Some People Will Escape Final Judgment, But Some Will Not

The Gospel

John 5:24 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes in Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.”

Straight from the mouth of the LORD, some people will escape judgment, ‘The Final Judgment’. On the same thought, some will NOT. According to written Scripture from the teaching of Christ, below are the ones who will face judgment.

Those who are angry with a brother or sister. Matthew 5:21-22 21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca, is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Those who did not settle quickly with their opponents before Christ appeared on the Last age and the last day.

Matthew 5:25 “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way, or your adversary may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison.

Those who do not forgive.

Matthew 6:15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Those who judge. Matthew 7:1-2 (Luke 6:37) 1“Do not judge, or you too will be judged 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Anyone who does not welcome the gospel.

Matthew 10:14-15 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. 15 Truly I tell you, it

will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.

Those who witnessed the miracles that Jesus’ disciples did, but would not believe.

Matthew 11:22-23 (Luke 12:58) 22

But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.

Those who say that Jesus and the disciples’ power comes from Satan.

Matthew 12: 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.

Those who say things that are not based on Truth.

Matthew 12:36-37 (Luke 19:22) 36

But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Those who did not repent.

Matthew 12 :41 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and now something greater than Jonah is here.

Those who did not listen to the words of Christ Jesus

Matthew 12:42 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, and now something greater than Solomon is here.

John 12:48 There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; the very words I have spoken will condemn them on the last day.

To summarize, let us examine these 10 concerns of our hearts so we will not face judgment:

Those who are angry with a brother or sister. Those who did not settle with their opponents before Christ appeared on the Last age and the last day. Those who do not forgive. Those who judge. Anyone who does not welcome the gospel. Those who witnessed the miracles that Jesus’ disciples did, but would not believe. Those who say that Jesus and the disciples’ power comes from Satan. Those who say things that are not based on Truth. Those who did not repent. Those who did not listen to the words of Christ Jesus.

On the other hand, these verses tell us who will escape judgment: Those who continuously hear the word of GOD and keep on believing Jesus Christ as the Son of the Living GOD, the Messiah

John 5:24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes in Him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

2. Those who obey Jesus Christ’s commandments.

John 12:47 47 “If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.

Romans 8:1-2 There is therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

It is so clear in John 5:24 and Romans 8:1-2 that we will escape judgement on the last day, which is revealed in Revelations 20:11. But let us clarify what is said in the Scripture on 2 Corinthians 5:10 that states “ALL of us will face the judgement seat”. It says, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat (bēmatos) of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.” Yes, all of us will face the

judgement seat, but not to be judged by Jesus to be condemned but to receive what is due to us who offered ourselves to the work of the Holy Spirit. In Luke 19:11-27, The Parable of Ten Minas describes that, in using the gift or talent from GOD, if you are more productive, more reward will be given to you. That applies to 2 Corinthians 5:10.

Jesus Christ also confirmed this in Matthew 19:28-29 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

However, in Revelations 20:11, which says, “11 Then I saw a great white throne (Megan leukon thronon) and him who was seated on it. From his presence, the earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.” This is the judgment that Jesus Christ discussed in Matthew 25:31-46, ‘The Final Judgement’. This is different from the judgment seat (bēmatos), all of us will face in 2 Corinthians 5:10, compared to the Great White Throne (Megan leukon thronon) in Revelation 20:11, where we will escape. Only the dead in spirit, those who did not believe in Jesus Christ, will be judged, but those who continue to believe in Jesus Christ will escape facing the Great White Throne, ‘The Final Judgement’. But I serve it anyway!

But me? I love bangus with the kind of loyalty usually reserved for family heirlooms and vinegar-based dishes. And while Joel keeps a safe distance, my Dutch oven and are busy frying belly cuts with no burns, no splatters, and a deep sense of domestic victory. That pot isn’t just for stews—it’s my armor. Its high sides keep the oil tantrums in check while I crisp up daing na bangus until it’s golden, crunchy, and glorious.

And if the kitchen starts to hiss? That’s the pressure cooker. It means I’m bottling up my signature Bangus Sardines—Spanish-style in olive oil, with bay leaves, chili, and just the right bite. Sure, it’s a misnomer (sardines and bangus are two different fish entirely), but try telling that to my regulars. In Olive’s Kitchen, it’s a best-seller. Comfort food in jars. Nostalgia on demand.

The National Fish That Rules Our Tables

In a nation of over 7,000 islands, you’d think it’d be hard to crown just one fish king. But the Bangus— known to scientists as Chanos chanos—wears the crown with pride, bones and all. It’s the official national fish of the Philippines, a cultural icon, and, as every Filipino knows, a culinary rite of passage. Matinik? Yes. But like true love, we choose it again and again— because it’s worth it.

Not because it isn’t delicious—he’ll be the first to admit it’s buttery, flavorful, and perfect with rice at any hour—but because of the bones. All 180 of them. Those needle-thin, stealthy *tiniks* that have haunted many a Filipino childhood. “Matinik,” he mutters, side-eyeing the plate like it once tried to assassinate him.

To this day, he chows down bangus like it’s out to get him. So if I really want him to eat it, I either rely on my “asawang” intuition or channel my inner surgeon—plucking bones one by one, like a love language only Filipino wives fully master. Or, I outsmart the fish entirely: marinate it in gin, let the pressure cooker do the work, and call it a peace offering.

Born to Swim, Raised to Feed a Nation Bangus is a tropical survivor. As the only living species in the Chanidae family, it’s been around since the dinosaur days. Native to the Indo-Pacific—from South Africa to Hawaii—no one embraces it quite like the Pinoys. In the Philippines, it’s farmed in brackish ponds, freshwater lakes, and coastal net cages.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, milkfish ranks second only to tilapia in aquaculture, with over 400,000 metric tons produced annually. Powerhouse producers include Pangasinan, Bulacan, Iloilo, and Mindoro, while companies like Sarangani Bay Prime

So what makes bangus so irresistible? Its subtly sweet flesh, creamy belly, and versatility. It soaks up marinades like a sponge, crisps beautifully in hot oil, and plays well in soups and sinigang. It’s an ingredient staple and star of our kitchen table. Here’s how we serve it:

Love Hurts: The Matinik Problem

If bangus has a PR problem, it’s the bones—some say up to 180 fine pin bones run along its flesh, turning every bite into a dental and spiritual exercise. But that hasn’t stopped Filipinos from turning it into one of the most consumed fish nationwide.

And if you do get a bone stuck in your throat? Cue the folk wisdom:

•Swallow a ball of rice.

•Gulp down a chunk of banana.

•Ask someone to pat you on the head while you cough

•Say a prayer to St. Blaise, the patron saint of throat ailments (yes, he’s real).

•But really, go see a doctor.

The Myth of the Mestizang Bangus

Filipinos crave a taste of home—minus the bones.

In fact, the boneless bangus market is expanding. Premium versions like bangus belly in olive oil, herb-marinated bangus, and even bangus pâté are now appearing in gourmet sections and e-commerce platforms. In the U.S., Filipino groceries and online stores (like Island Pacific, Seafood City, and FilAm Food) report consistent demand for good quality and premium bangus products.

And, let’s not forget aesthetics—yes, aesthetics. A perfectly plump, glistening bangus, belly-side up, is often compared (with full Pinoy flair) to a mestizang bangus—fair, soft-skinned, and undeniably artistahin. It’s the kind of bangus that gets picked first at the palengke, just like a screen test beauty queen—clean, curvy, and ready for her close-up.

Think old Sampaguita Pictures press clippings: “Maputi, makinis, at malaman”—but it’s the fish they’re talking about, not Susan Roces.

1 kg bangus (milkfish), cleaned and sliced into 2-inch steaks

* 1 tbsp salt

* 1 cup vinegar

* 1/4 c Gin

* 1 cup olive oil

* 2 small carrots, sliced into thin rounds

* 5 pcs Whole sweet pickles, sliced

* 1 tsp peppercorns

* 3 bay leaves

* 2–3 pcs siling labuyo (optional, for heat)

* 1–2 cups water

Preparation Steps:

1.In a pressure cooker, arrange the bangus slices flat. Layer with garlic, carrot rounds, peppercorns, bay leaves, and siling labuyo. Repeat if stacking multiple layers.

2. Pour and seal:Add olive oil and just enough water to barely cover the fish. Seal the cooker and cook for 30 minutes on high and 15 minutes on low heat. Let the pressure release naturally. Carefully lift the bangus pieces—they’ll be very tender. Serve warm over garlic rice or toast with pickled vegetables. Enjoy!

These mobile ventures are more than just caffeine stops; they are cultural ambassadors, infusing every cup with stories of identity, resilience, and innovation. Both businesses also know how to develop their brand and take care of it.

Both Hiraya Coffee and Babaylan Brews exemplify the spirit of Filipino American entrepreneurship, blending cultural heritage with innovative business models. THE FRUIT OF ONE’S HOPES AND DREAMS

Hiraya Coffee, founded by Cessy Mendoza and Honey Flores, is a womenowned, AAPI, and LGBTQIA+ business that brings a taste of the Philippines to Las Vegas through its mobile specialty coffee experience. The name HIRAYA is a Filipino word meaning “the fruit of one’s hopes and dreams,” reflecting their mission to share the rich heritage and unique flavors of Filipino coffee. Their mobile cart offers handcrafted beverages made from premium Filipino beans, catering to weddings, corporate events, and more.

Cessy shares: “We come from very different professional backgrounds, I’m a pastry chef with over 15 years of culinary experience, and Honey previously coowned a medical business, but we both share a deep love for coffee, community, and culture.” For Honey, “Hiraya has always been more than a brand, it’s been part of me, a calling that echoed in my heart long before Hiraya Coffee Las Vegas came to life.”

The roots of Hiraya Coffee were planted long before the first cup was ever poured. It began in 2013, when Cessy’s quiet curiosity about coffee turned into something deeper—an obsession with its possibilities.

What started as a fascination with flavor evolved into a calling. By 2016, that calling took her back to the Philippines, where she immersed herself in the world of coffee—not just how it’s brewed, but how it’s grown, harvested, and brought to life through the hands of Filipino farmers.

It was there, among the highlands and small farms, that she saw what many often miss: the untapped richness of Philippine coffee and the stories hidden in every bean. That discovery lit a fire in her—not just to make great coffee, but to tell a bigger story.

So when the idea of a pop-up took shape, it felt right. Intimate. Approachable. A way to share that journey through drinks crafted with intention and pride. One sip of their Philippine Sea Latte—swirls of espresso, blue butterfly pea, spirulina, oatmilk, and a sprinkle of tibuok salt—and you’re not just tasting a drink; you’re tasting the islands.

For Cessy, this is just the beginning. “One day,” she says, “we’ll open a permanent space that feels like Hiraya through and through. Not just a coffee shop, but a gathering place—where people connect over Philippine-grown beans, modern Filipino pastries, and stories layered into every cup.”

COFFE, COMMUNITY AND THE HEALING SPIRIT OF THE BABAYLAN

Babaylan Brews is more than just a coffee pop-up — it’s a family dream steeped in heritage and heart. Founded by a dynamic mother-and-children team, the business is co-owned by Mom Maye and her children Oia and Titoi under Babaylan LLC. Together, they bring diverse skills — from aesthetics and product development to legal and operational logistics — forming what they affectionately call “Team Babaylan.” Even their beloved cat Panda, though not listed on the LLC, is very much part of the family spirit behind the brand.

The idea of a Philippine-inspired coffee brew had long been brewing in Maye’s mind. Her ultimate dream? A full beverage line including craft beer, kombucha, and fresh juices inspired by Filipino flavors. But with her kids still in school, launching a full-scale operation wasn’t yet viable.

That changed when her eldest daughter, Oia, opted for a gap year in 2024. Together, the family decided to start with a coffee cart. Just as they were about to purchase a mobile trailer, the opportunity came to partner with MANG FELIX KITCHEN, the restaurant in Boulevard Mall, right in the heart of newly designated FILIPINOTOWN which offered them a space for a permanent pop-up. Since March 2025, Babaylan Brews has found a home while still embracing its mobile roots.

The name BABAYLAN holds deep meaning. A nod to the powerful female healers and spiritual leaders of precolonial Philippines, Maye was often called a “Babaylan” by friends due to her background in community organizing and interest in ancient healing practices. The name reflects the business’ core values — restorative, rooted, community-centered, and proudly Filipino. Looking ahead, Babaylan Brews aims to become a cultural hub — a brick-andmortar space where people can gather, share art and ideas, and celebrate Filipino identity through flavor and storytelling. They also plan to launch KARYAPA, a signature 5-in-1 instant brew of coffee, cacao, cayenne, coconut milk, and coconut sugar. It is named after the first recorded Babaylan from Bohol, As advocates of Philippine-grown beans, especially the rare Liberica or “Barako,” Babaylan Brews hopes to elevate Filipino coffee in the U.S. market. “We’re not just selling coffee — we’re helping our farmers, we tell our stories, and we share a taste of home.”
