October 2020 has two full moons, October 1st and October 31st. Although full moons are associated with Halloween, a Halloween full moon is quite rare. The most recent Halloween full moons were in 1955, 1974, and 2001. The second full Moon in a single calendar month is often called a Blue Moon.

This means October 31, 2020 will be a Full Hunters Blue moon, giving us a spectacular (and spooky) Halloween!

Neighborhood Connection Pantry Pack program is designed to provide food for children who are at risk of going without food on the weekends when school-provided breakfasts and lunches are not available. Students who receive Pantry Packs are identified by teachers and administrators. Each Pantry Pack costs $3 and provides children with two breakfasts, two snacks, and two lunches. The packs are given to kids on Friday to ensure they have adequate nutrition for their weekend. Neighborhood Connection believes that no child should go hungry. Donations of time, food products and monetary amounts are needed to ensure the program continues to serve our local children. taheli Family Farm is a 5 generation working farm. The farm has 350 acres and was established in 1889 by Frank Staheli Sr., a vegetable farmer and immigrant from Switzerland. Frank was not only one of the first mayors in Washington City, Utah but an agricultural pioneer who built the first rock irrigation ditches here - the primary irrigation system still used today. Frank Staheli and his sons started in the cattle business 50 years ago and continue to this day to raise the best Beef in the area.

(Visit their website for details on their high-quality beef.)

Times have changed but the hard work and love for the community at Staheli Family Farm remain the same. The Corn Maze has become one of Southern Utah's favorite fall traditions.

What readers are saying about Hi, I stumbled across your handout at the Dino museum and was so pleasantly surprised by the wonderful info about community events and resources. We are new to the area and I found it to be very helpful. I look forward to snatching one each month as we learn this community. Thank you As a single parent, it is always a bit of a challenge to find the next best thing to do that will not only keep the kids entertained but myself as well. I have been so appreciative of the Southern Utah Family and Kids magazine for giving me options that are fun and appropriate. I love my family and want to enjoy all the moments and time that we have together. When my mind draws a blank on what to do next, I appreciate having a place to turn to, for fun ideas, good deals on things or just a good read to keep the family happy and the good times a-rolling. I sure do appreciate all the help that the magazine provides for my family and I. My kids love picking up the new issue each month almost as much as I do. We love the deals, dining specials, calendar of events and fun articles.

Columbus Day October 14th Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas. He is sometimes portrayed as the discoverer of the New World. However, this is controversial on many counts. There is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia. In addition, the land was already populated by indigenous peoples, who had 'discovered' the Americas thousands of years before. Columbus Day originated as a celebration of Italian-American heritage and was first held in San Francisco in 1869. The first state-wide celebration was held in Colorado in 1907. In 1937, Columbus Day become a holiday across the United States. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October.
