On June 28, we fondly remember the tales of the big blue ox and a mighty lumberjack. It is National Paul Bunyan Day! Described as a giant and a lumberjack of unusual skill, Paul Bunyan is one of the most famous North American folklore heroes. In the tales, Paul Bunyan was almost always accompanied by his companion, Babe the Blue Ox. First appearing in print in 1906, in a story published by Northern Michigan journalist James MacGillivray, Bunyan’s character originated in folktales circulated among lumberjacks in the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. Folklore also credits Bunyan with forming the Grand Canyon as he and Babe the Blue Ox walked through dragging his axe behind him. Another myth suggests Bunyan created the Great Lakes so Babe, his Blue Ox had a watering hole. www.SouthernUtahFamilyandKids.com

TALKING TO KIDS ABOUT DISEASE The COVID-19 crisis has many parents wondering how to talk to their kids about diseases that will be reassuring and not stir up more worry than they might already have. Most children have already heard about coronavirus; they are also seeing people in face masks and other outwardly visual signs that something has changed. Not talking about something can actually make kids worry more. The goal is to help your children feel informed and get information that is reassuring. It is important not to volunteer too much information. Let your child ask questions and you do your best to answer honestly and clearly. Focus on what you are doing as a parent to keep your children stay safe. The CDC recommends thoroughly washing your hands as the primary means of staying healthy. Getting kids to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds (the length of two rounds of the “Happy Birthday” song) is an easy thing to teach. Remind them to wash after they come in from outside, before they eat, and especially after they blow their nose, cough, sneeze or use the bathroom. Finally, reassure them that you will continue to keep them updated as information becomes available. When you do your part and they do theirs, we all win the battle against viral infection.
