PTE Tips: How to Increase Your Oral Fluency Oral fluency is the ability to speak continuously in English without any unnecessary pauses or fillers (umm, ah, etc.). Being fluent doesn’t mean that you can speak perfect English; it simply means that you can speak comfortably and clearly. Oral fluency is one of the components of the PTE speaking exam scoring criteria.

As a test taker enrolled in a PTE preparation online course program, it is important to seek for different tips and strategies that can help boost your oral fluency and ace the speaking test.

To help improve your PTE online test training, below are practical tips on how to develop your oral fluency for the speaking test:



Read texts aloud

Read your course training materials out loud during study time or review sessions. If you encounter an unfamiliar word, check the dictionary to learn its pronunciation. Pay attention to the punctuation marks including periods, question marks and commas as these indicate that you need to pause for a while.



Talk to yourself

Although talking to yourself may sound weird to some people, it is still the best way to improve your oral fluency. To do this effectively, write down five interesting topics on a piece of paper. During your study time, talk to yourself about the topics you have written. Make sure that when you’re talking to yourself, you should not lose track of the topics in the paper.



Talk to someone else

Find someone who speaks fluent English. Talk about topics that you are both interested in. You can talk about the latest news, your favorite film or TV show, and even your personal experiences. After your conversation, ask him/her to give you some language tips on how to improve your oral fluency.



Listen to other people

When you listen to native English speakers, don’t pay attention to what they are saying but focus on how they are saying it. Remember that a large part of becoming a fluent English speaker is being able to mimic the way native speakers talk. After your PTE online test training, listen to English TV show or radio programs and practice to mimic the way they speak.



Think in English

If you are alone, brushing your teeth or even if you are daydreaming; always make it a habit of thinking in English. Doing this before taking the speaking test boosts not only your oral fluency but also your criticalthinking skills.
