8 PTE Manila Review Tips for Writing Task 1: Summarize Written Text Constructing clear and concise sentences plays an important role in the PTE Writing Test: Summarize Written Text. For this PTE writing task, you will need to write a summary of a passage in one sentence. You will have 10 minutes to construct your summary in a full, single sentence of no more than 75 words.

This writing task assesses your ability to determine the main idea and supporting details of a reading passage as well as to write those ideas into a single sentence.

1. Read the instructions The PTE Writing Task 1 consists of the following guidelines: 

The word count at the bottom of the screen tallies the number of words you write.



2. Skim the reading text Don’t waste your time reading the whole passage. Skim the text and look for critical points such as names, dates, and even unfamiliar terminologies.

3. Use a note-taking technique List down all the critical points you found in the text. Use a note-taking technique to organize your notes properly. During your review classes in a PTE review center, look for the best note-taking strategies that you can utilize in the exam. The listing method, fishbone method, charting method, and sentence method are some examples of note-taking strategies.

4. Prepare your response Make sure that your answer is only one sentence, with a capital letter at the beginning and only one full stop at the end. Your responses must also be between 5 and 57 words so check the word count at the bottom of the screen.

5. Use a compound or complex sentence Because your response must be expressed within one sentence, it is essential to use a compound or complex sentence. Doing this enables you to summarize the main point of the reading passage by using various phrases in a sentence.

6. Manage your time Time management plays a crucial factor in the PTE Writing Task 1. To do this effectively, simply follow these points: 

Spend at least two minutes skimming the text.



Spend at least one minute listing down critical points.



Spend at least four minutes constructing your response.



Use the remaining three minutes reviewing your answer.

7. Review your response Once you have written your answer, check the spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Make sure that the sentence contains all the necessary information about the reading passage. Grammar is scored by determining if the basic structure of the sentence is accurate.
