At Centrum, art is an oasis for everyone. Our seaside setting, rural environs and the changing landscape are the canvas—our brilliant artists and instructors paint new scenes, week after week, inspiring the creativity in us all.

Nearly 2,000 participants travel from 17 foreign countries, 46 of the 50 states, and 77% of the counties in Washington to participate in Centrum workshops and artist residencies. In addition, over 10,000 audience members share the power of artistic creativity in our many performances, literary readings and free events that we produce each year.

Tonight’s gala is a chance for you to show your support of Centrum and its mission. We encourage you to bid generously, motivated by knowing that your support helps the thousands of workshop students, from age 4 to 98, whom we serve.

Through a continuing partnership with the Superintendent for Public Instruction, Centrum has been pioneering transformative arts workshop for students since 1974. Musicians & Photographeri Gala Musicians | Choro das 3 Choro das 3 is a family-based band composed by three sisters: Corina Meyer Ferreira (flutes). Elisa Meyer Ferreira (mandolin, clarinet, banjo, piano) and Lia Meyer Ferreira (7-string acoustic guitar).

The band plays Brazilian instrumental music, and their main style is Choro music, an instrumental music genre that emerged in Brazil on the 19th century. The band has performed in concerts and workshops all over Brazil, USA, Mexico and France.

Fundraising Auctioneer Laura Michalek still relies on the endurance and discipline she possessed when at the age of 15, she was the first female winner of the Chicago Marathon. While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me auctioneering is about giving a lot of yourself, before and during the event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.” Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients and their mission, not only sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.” For 15 years prior to becoming a full time fundraising professional, Ms. Michalek owned and operated several nationally recognized vintage modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition, and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so whenever I set out to do something it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life.

“When I start auctioneering, it’s like being in the starting block all over again, and I still set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”

On the night of the Gala Choro das 3 will play during the silent auction and perform a short set as guests are seated for dinner at 7 pm. We thank them for joining us this evening, and thank Centrum’s friend, Al Bergstein, for making their appearance possible!

WRITERS’ CONFERENCE

There is nothing quite as personal as using one’s own voice to express music. Voice Works celebrates singing—at every level—as a means of building community and honoring musical traditions. The workshop draws exceptional faculty as well as participants from throughout the U.S. This year, Voice Works highlighted a wide range of vocal traditions— from Denmark and Quebec, to American country, R&B, and jazz. The workshop featured Jenny Lester and Karla Mundy; Maja Kjær Jacobsen and David Boulanger; Valerie Mindel and Joe Newberry; Grace Love and Michaud Savage; Becky Kilgore and John Miller; and Pharis and Jason Romero. The annual polka dot dance and live KPTZ radio broadcast of our summer-opening concert made this week something special!

Since 1974, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference has provided writers of all levels with rigorous craft instruction and egalitarian community in a nurturing environment. Whether writers come to create new work, to rethink and revise existing work, or whether they simply desire to be refreshed and renewed in the writing life, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference is the central heart of the Pacific Northwest literary scene.

THE FESTIVAL OF AMERICAN FIDDLE TUNES 2017 marked the 41st consecutive Festival of American Fiddle Tunes! This year’s faculty was comprised of over 35 instructors traveling from four different countries, each performing a cavalcade of regional fiddle styles. What a way to spend the week—living, learning, and jamming with the masters, and most importantly, being in community with the bearers of fiddle traditions. In his first year as artistic director, Grammy winner Joel Savoy brought together artists who shared a rich history and diverse styles of fiddle music with hundreds of participants in our weeklong, multigenerational workshop. They brought to life the art and the soul of community-based fiddle music.

Featured performers and faculty included the energetic Quebec quartet ReVeillons!; Candadian Grand Master fiddler Calvin Vollrath; Louisiana’s Doug Kershaw; Ireland’s James, John, and Maggie Carty; as well as the highly recognized Rhiannon Giddens and Dirk Powell—to name just a few!

PORT TOWNSEND WRITERS’ CONFERENCE

In 2017, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference offered morning and afternoon workshops, residencies, guided freewrites, and a vibrant reading and lectures series. Artistic Sam Ligon Director Sam Ligon joined with faculty memARTISTIC DIRECTOR bers, Sayantani Dasgupta; Erin Belieu; Melissa Febos; Dan Chaon; Mark Doty; Dana Levin; Priscilla Long; Alexandra Teague; Kathryn Trueblood and others transforming the inspirational environment of Fort Worden into a supportive, craft-oriented community built around helping each writer take the next step or steps in their writing life.

JAZZ After 41 years, Jazz Port Townsend is still going strong as one of the oldest and most respected Jazz workshops in the nation. Artistic Director John Clayton orchestrated a weeklong opportunity for participants to meet other excellent musicians, soak up a week of jazz in a seaside paradise, and leave as better musicians. In 2017 we welcomed an all-star faculty led by Hubert Laws, Dawn Clement, George Cables, Terell Stafford, Niki Haris, Martin Wind, Matt Wilson, Wycliffe Gordon, Dee Daniels, Tia Fuller, Randy Halberstadt and many more; they taught all week, performed in three culminating mainstage concerts, and played over three nights of Jazz in the Clubs in downtown Port Townsend. Centrum continues to draw the greats to this workshop and to provide life-changing educational experiences to participants.

VOICES FROM THE FIELD ARTS ACADEMY

Artistic Director Jerron Paxton invited players from regions where pre-war country blues originated—Piedmont, the Delta, Mississippi Hill Country, New Orleans, Texas and more— to the largest country blues gathering in the nation. Luther Dickinson, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, Phil Wiggins, Ben Payton, Marcus Cartwright and others offered an immersion in the African American history and traditions from which blues has grown. The legendary artist Maria Muldaur returned along with longtime Centrum veteran Suzy Thompson performing string band music. A gospel concert drew a standing-room-only crowd, and capacity audiences enjoyed the Hill Country Blues and Zydeco Dance, Acoustic Blues Showcase, and Blues in the Clubs in downtown Port Townsend.

Having completed its second successful year, the goal of Voices from the Field Arts Academy is to provide outstanding arts experiences for middle school students in Washington State’s Migrant Education programs. Many of these students have not had a lot of opportunity to experience the arts in their regular school day. Some struggle academically, trying to keep up to grade level in the face of moving from school to school while their families move for their work. Centrum believes experiences in meaningful arts classes will both inspire them to find their own strengths and creativity and be an avenue through which increased literacy and academic development takes place.

YOUNG ARTISTS PROJECT Centrum’s Young Artists Project (YAP) offers dynamic creative experiences for elementary, middle and high school students. The Young Artists Project brings professional artist faculty to present workshops, exhibits, and performances that engage youth in the world of arts ideas; promote creative risk-taking; and teach best professional practices. These vital, contemporary artists guide and inspire young participants to immerse themselves in the arts—practicing, listening, conversing, drawing, sculpting, painting, dancing, performing, writing, and reading—while in residence at Fort Worden’s barracks. The workshops include Explorations (Grades 7-9); Tales, Texts and Theater for Blue Heron Middle School, (Grade 7); Water World (Grades 5-6); and DANCE This! (Grades 9-12).

VOICES FROM THE FIELD ARTS ACADEMY

For this program, Centrum is collaborating with the Office of the Superintendent of Public Education’s (OSPI) Migrant Education Program and five schools from Washington State.

With 60 students, their chaperones and a cohort of teachers from their schools, the week at Centrum is a complete arts immersion.

Theater, Visual Art, Poetry, Dance and Music take center stage for one week, guided by an outstanding artist faculty and the idea that the arts reveal essential insights and ways of learning that can resonate meaningfully in the lives of young people.

CENTRUM ARTIST RESIDENCIES

Centrum’s Artist Residency Program was established in 1980 as a resource for artists and creative thinkers of all genres. Artists from around the world come to Centrum to retreat into the tranquility and natural beauty of Fort Worden and focus on their art. Noted for its community wide support of arts and culture, Port Townsend is an ideal place for the kind of self-directed retreats enjoyed by successful residency applicants. Residency projects may be single-genre or multidisciplinary; they may be the creative work of an individual or encompass the collaborative work of a group.

Centrum is now in the fourth year of its initiative to support artists at the beginning of their career trajectory. The Emerging Artists Residency is a month-long program that provides six visual artists—selected through an invitation-only process—with housing, studio space and a stipend. Educators from throughout the Northwest, Alaska and Canada nominate artists graduating from a fine arts program within the last five years; the nominated artists are invited to apply; and a three-member jury selects the finalists. Emerging artists selected for the October residency in 2017 are Aruni Dharmakirthi, Benjamin Gale-Schreck, Mario Lemafa, Anna Mlasowsky, Minh Nguyen, and Melanie Stevens.

UKULELE FESTIVAL Now in its fifth consecutive year of sold-out events, the Centrum Ukulele Festival continues to rock! Artistic Director Marianne Brogan and her world-class faculty—Aaron and Nicole Keim, Adam Franklin, Casey MacGill, Graig Chee and Sarah Maisel, Daniel Ward, Del Rey, Eve Goldberg, Gerald Ross, Heidi Swedberg, Jason Arimoto, Jere and Greg Canote, Kevin Carroll, Matt Weiner and Nova Karina Devonie—are feeding the huge demand among uke players from all parts of the USA.

Centrum Programsi BRAZILIAN CHORO The Brazilian musical style of Choro represents the coming together of European melodic and harmonic traditions with African rhythms and sensibilities. Emerging in Brazil in the middle of the nineteenth century, Choro is a cousin of jazz, with a sense of yearning that is often described as a “sweet lament.” Choro is a great way for both jazz and classically oriented musicians to meet on common ground.

There are written charts with lovely and lively melodies accessible to any competent player.

There’s also room for improvisation, and in a vein that’s a great way for classical musicians to expand their skills in this. In 2017 we welcomed back Anat Cohen, Dudu Maia, Douglas Lora and Alexandre Lora, as well as first-time faculty member Daniela Speilmann as artist faculty and featured performers.

Under the guidance of Artistic Director Lucinda Carver, Port Townsend Chamber Music Festival exists to showcase the brilliant talent of many of the world’s finest classical artists along with the top echelon of most promising young talents in the field today. The intimacy and warmth of the Joseph F. Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden provides an ideal venue for our dynamic performances and master classes. Following the huge success of our inaugural residency with the Enso Quartet in 2015, Centrum welcomed the Miró Quartet as Lucinda Carver “Ensemble in Residence” for our 2017 workARTISTIC DIRECTOR shop. Two emerging quartets and two accomplished and aspiring pianists were invited as participants for this unique and immersive experience. This October, we kicked off our 2017-2018 Season with the acclaimed American Brass Quintet, which will be followed by a Baroque Showcase in March and the Pacifica Quartet in June. Come and experience chamber music at its highest level.

General Rulesi 1. When you purchase auction items, your balance will be subject to the 8% Auction Service Fee. For example, if you purchase $100 worth of auction items, your bill will be increased by $8.

On your auction statement, this fee will be called an “administrative and data processing fee” because it allows Centrum to: • Do its own data entry, using Auction Tracker software; • Pay for the services of Auctioneer Laura Michalek; and • Cover the expense of printing silent and live auction bid forms, invoices, bid cards, and the catalog.

The Services Fee applies to all items charged to your account.

However, it is not applied to donations made to the Fund-aDream portion of the auction.

2. Unless otherwise noted, all goods and services must be claimed and used within one year of the auction date.

3. Upon entry, each guest receives a bid card. To bid in the silent auction, write your bid number clearly on the silent auction bid form. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high, with the number toward the auctioneer. By bidding in the live or silent auction each bidder agrees to these auction rules.

4. A bid acknowledged in the live auction by the auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. In the silent auction, designation by the silent auction official of the bid you have written is a legal contract to purchase that item.

5. Winning bidders may pay for their items at the conclusion of the live auction. If you sign up for “Express Pay” at the beginning of the evening, purchases will be charged to your account.

Payment in full is mandatory at the auction.

6. Except for “per person” bidding, auction items are awarded to one purchaser only. A purchaser wishing to split the payment for an auction item must collect individual payments from the other bidders sharing in the cost and present them to the cashiers at the time of payment for the item.

7. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds on items unless otherwise noted.

8. We will gladly accept your payment by currency, check, Visa or MasterCard.

10. Purchaser may pick up by showing the “Paid” receipt.

11. Reservations for trips, dinners, and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged unless otherwise noted.

12. Centrum has attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly, “as is, where is.” Centrum neither warrants nor represents, and in no event shall be responsible for the correctness of descriptions, authorship, or condition of items.

13. Each person issued a bid number (bidder) assumes all risks and hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction and agrees to hold harmless all parties connected with the auction from any liability arising therefrom.

SILENT AUCTION 1. Bid by writing your bid number on the form opposite the amount you want to bid. We ask you to press firmly, as you will be making two copies. The next bidder must bid the next higher amount to be successful.

2 You do not have to take the next available bid amount, but may skip ahead to find the amount you really want to bid.

3. To ensure your purchase of an item, write your bid number opposite the amount labeled “GUARANTEED PURCHASE” and you own the item. Bidding on that item is concluded.

4. You may bid on any silent auction item until the section is closed. Bidding will close at the time announced or posted.

LIVE AUCTION You may bid in the Live Auction by holding your bid card up high, with the number toward the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or bid spotter can accept your bid. Please note that some items, for large groups, will be bid PER PERSON. Each couple has two bid cards, and you must raise a card for each person bidding to attend one of these events.

“One boat builder, whose name I no longer have, and who had supplied boats to fishermen for 30 years, decided he could bring in enough money to live on if he made boat models. He did not know how to build historical replicas nor the sleek yacht models most collectors wanted: he only knew how to build inshore fishing craft, so that is what he made, exactly as he had made the large working versions. He went out into the woods to select the keels and keel sections as he had always done, but on a tiny scale.

He followed his usual pattern of construction, made grand use of his wife’s sewing basket and medicine cabinet for various reels, winches, searchlights, hawsers and such on a miniature scale. He put the first completed model out on the front lawn with a FOR SALE sign and waited for a tourist. This is his first boat model. I have no idea if he contin-

Foremost of the watercolor artists who executed the original paintings was Vishnupersaud (occasionally referred to as Vishnu Prasad), an Indian artist frequently employed by naturalists working in India, such as John Forbes Royle and Francis Buchanan-Hamilton. His skill was legendary.

She has studied with teachers from Port Townsend, Vermont, Portland, Oregon, and New Mexico. While learning a variety of techniques in collage artistry, Anne has found her own unique voice in art. “I create many of my collage papers making monoprints using acrylic paints with stencils, masks, lines, stamps and textures. My work is a process of layering these and other papers with acrylic paints on substrates of canvas, wood boards or papers. Following the layering, a process of excavating through the layers, and adding transparent layers begins. After many layers of paint and papers and use of colors a balance and dimensionality emerges in the work.”

‘’An ebony and black-walnut burl custom nine-foot dining table made by Washington craftsman Rich Soborowicz of Covington, Washington. For the top Mr. Soborowicz selected matched burl wood from an Oregon black walnut. The table was finished and delivered to me in 2015. The workmanship was beautiful. But two years later the decision to move to a smaller house in Port Townsend meant that I could not keep this table which was too large for the smaller house. I placed it and several other pieces at a furniture consignment house in Issaquah run by a voluble woman known only as “Darlene” with stories of buying antiques in China fifty years ago and other adventures in the murky world of international furniture deals.

Months passed, then a week ago came the sudden news that Darlene’s business was in receivership and the proprietor herself in trouble. We had less than 48 hours to pick up our remaining furniture-but still no room for it in the P.T. house. And so the pieces were donated to the Centrum Gala auction.’’

Over the past 25 years Kim Kopp’s artwork has evolved and threaded its way back to childhood fascinations: a desire, a patience, a skill for untangling knotted things no one else would bother with; necklaces, bits of string, a jump rope, the dog’s leash. Wandering with her wagon she collected plant debris, catkins and maple seeds, hiding them in the fort she built in the hedgerow at the back of the yard in her suburban Chicago neighborhood.

Kopp is still a gatherer of things. Walking is essential to her practice, a way to begin. For her it opens the route between the external world and the inner world of the studio. On Kopp’s ritual woodland paths, she pays close attention to changes that occur — daily and seasonally — recording what attracts her attention, ‘navigating’ her way through time.

The artist is a 2013 recipient of a fellowship at Jentel, an artist residency program in Wyoming. In 2005 Kopp was an EDGE Professional Development participant and in 2002 she was awarded a GAP from Artist Trust in Washington State, as well as a residency at Centrum, and is currently represented by Gallery IMA and SAM Gallery in Seattle. She is a graduate of the University of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The winning bidder will also receive a single place at the table for the Finistere/ Northwind dinner.

Troncones is a world renowned ‘secret’ getaway, a world class surf destination, and a model for development with an eye to protecting the environment. Life is pretty slow paced - with only about 400 full time residents, much of the local income comes either from tourism or related work. It is located 25 minutes from the well-known resort town of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and serviced by an int’l airport (ZIH).

Capafons, learning about his unique method of establishing/maintaining his vineyards, and tasting his wines, this became one of my personal favorite Priorat wines (and is also favored by the legendary Spanish chef of El Bulli fame, Ferran Adrià).

Prepare for a full-immersion Steinbeck evening! Jim and Jeanne Costello will bring to your home a favorite dinner of John Steinbeck’s, along with a copy of Steinbeck: The Untold Stories by Steve Hauk for each of your guests. While you’re sharing Steinbeck’s favorite meal, Jim will share the background of several stories related by Jim’s father to Hauk, who then crafted them into fictional tales. Diners will also view newspaper clippings about one of the stories and a letter from Carol Steinbeck about a party which played a large part in another story.

The menu comes from Hattie Gragg—Jim’s great-grandmother—a civic activist and socialite whose home (Stokes Adobe, ca. 1833) was Monterey’s social hub until her passing in 1948. Steinbeck was a frequent visitor, eager to hear stories of Monterey’s “paisanos,” laying the groundwork for Tortilla Flat.

She’d serve Steinbeck’s favorites:
