Girlhood, defined as the period of a young girl’s upbringing/self into womanhood; this is the stage in a girl’s life where everything is awkward and those prepubescent feelings are running rampant. During this time, young girls are experimenting with makeup and clothing, all with the help of other women in their life or teen magazines. Or that’s how it used to be, young girls are now growing up in a digital age, where they no longer have to go to their older sisters, but can now just type it in and get a response in less than a second. Tips and tricks that used to be passed down from mother to daughter or older to younger sister are now being transmitted through screens to younger audiences.
However, is this really a bad thing? Instead of looking at this situation as a glass half-empty, let me present it to you differently. With the rise of the internet during Generation Z’s upbringing, it was bound to happen. The concept of girlhood may be lost in those generationally tips and tricks, but the essence of girlhood has managed to survive and adapt in the digital sphere. There are now thousands of short, informative videos on topics like getting rid of razor bumps, how to tell if your crush likes you, or what’s in season for summer 2024. With access to all this information, it allows young girls to explore a wide range of topics beyond what is traditionally taught in schools and at home. The rising popularity of internet usage has empowered girls to pursue diverse interests and careers, challenging traditional gender roles and stereotypes.
Young girls now have the ability to build online communities with other young girls who have the same questions regarding girlhood. These communities are providing a sense of belonging and solidarity, particularly for girls who may feel marginalized or isolated in their offline lives. There have been so many instances where I was too embarrassed to go to my mother to speak about some of the things I was facing in my early stages of girlhood. I wasn’t alone in this. Thankfully, the internet has facilitated the creation of online communities and support networks where girls can connect with others who share their interests, experiences, and challenges.
Older generations are starting to fear that girlhood will be no longer, because the “pubescent days of trial and error in the realm of beauty and fashion are over for younger girls.” Which is completely not true. Young girls within this generation are just adapting to the Digital Age, they are being raised in. The essence of girlhood still very much exists within this generation, awkwardness and all–just in a more technologically savvy way than previous generations. unfortunately, all because they don’t see the awkwardness and unruliness these young girls are still going through. At the end of the day, the internet has both expanded the possibilities and complexities of girlhood, offering new opportunities for empowerment and self-expression while also posing challenges and risks that require thoughtful navigation and support.
GENERATION Z’S PROMISED FUTURE: HARMONY BETWEEN TECHNOLOGY + NATURE.

In the 2000s, there existed a dream–a vision of a world where the marvels of technology seamlessly blend with the serenity of nature. This dream was promised since the birth of generation Z, a future where the relentless march of progress does not trample upon the delicate balance of the natural world. Instead of nature being lost in a world that keeps evolving, there was a notion of harmony where technology and nature coexist in a delicate dance of innovation and sustainability.
Imagine a world where cities are lush green oases, where renewable energy powers our homes and businesses, and where technology is a force for good, enhancing our lives without compromising the planet. This is the future that Generation Z envisions—a future where we dare to dream big and act boldly.
Frutiger Aero was a prime model of this promised future. Conceived by visionary designers and engineers, this aesthetic was a beacon of hope in a world often overshadowed by environmental concerns. Its sleek, futuristic design incorporates cutting-edge technologies aimed at minimizing its environmental footprint while maximizing its functionality and aesthetic appeal. This embodied the ethos of Generation Z, offering a glimpse into what could be achieved when technology is harnessed in
service of nature. From renewable energy sources to advanced waste management systems, every aspect of how Frutiger Aero was designed is meticulously crafted to coexist harmoniously with its natural surroundings.
THAT WAS THE BLUEPRINT OF
THE FUTURE WE WERE PROMISED. A FUTURE WHERE ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP AND SUSTAINABILITY PREVAILED.
Frutiger Aero was a vision of what urban sustainability could have looked like, unfortunately, this is not the reality that Generation Z is growing up in. Instead we are dealing with loss of biodiversity, deforestation, and the biggest one of them
Instead of inheriting a world where nature and technology complement each other, Generation Z finds itself grappling with the harsh realities of a planet in peril. The signs of ecological distress are everywhere, stark reminders of the broken promises of the past. The rapid advancement of technology has largely caused an environmental demise–rampant consumerism and resource exploitation, resulting in pollution, deforestation, and habitat destruction on a massive scale.
In essence, Frutiger Aero encapsulated the aspirations of Generation Z—a generation deeply committed to forging a more sustainable future. Through its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and human-centric design, Frutiger Aero embodies the ideals of a future where technological progress is synonymous with environmental stewardship and human well-being. As Generation Z continues to shape the world, Frutiger Aero serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path towards a future where technology and nature thrive in harmony.
THE EVOLUTION OF FASHION IN THE DIGITAL
In the digital age, the concept of personal style has undergone a profound transformation. With the power of the internet at our fingertips, we are no longer content with simply expressing ourselves through clothing; instead, we are customizing our characters, crafting identities that are influenced by a myriad of factors, from fast fashion to fads and modernized past trends.
Gone are the days when personal style was a reflection of individuality and authenticity. Today, our fashion choices are often shaped by the relentless churn of trends and the pressure to keep up with the latest looks. With social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest serving as virtual runways, we are bombarded with images of seemingly flawless influencers showcasing the latest styles, setting the stage for a culture of constant consumption and emulation.
The rise of fast fashion has further fueled this phenomenon, offering affordable and on-trend clothing at the click of a button. With e-commerce giants like Amazon and ASOS dominating the online marketplace, we have unprecedented access to a vast array of clothing options, making it easier than ever to experiment with different styles and looks.
But while fast fashion has democratized access to clothing, it has also homogenized our sense of style, leading to a sea of sameness where everyone looks the same. In our quest to stay on-trend and keep up with the latest fads, we risk losing sight of what makes us unique, sacrificing individuality for conformity.
Moreover, the internet’s power of accessibility has enabled us to modernize past fashion trends, reviving styles from decades past and putting a contemporary spin on them. From ‘90s grunge to ‘80s athleisure, we are constantly drawing inspiration from the past, remixing and reimagining vintage looks for the digital
age.
But while this trend of retro revivalism may seem like a celebration of nostalgia, it also reflects our collective obsession with authenticity and heritage. In an increasingly digital world, where everything is fleeting and ephemeral, we yearn for a connection to the past, seeking solace in the familiarity of retro aesthetics and vintage vibes.
In this era of character customization, where our fashion choices are influenced by a myriad of factors, it’s easy to lose sight of what truly matters: self-expression. While the internet offers endless possibilities for experimentation and exploration, it’s important to remember that true style is not about following trends or conforming to societal norms; it’s about embracing who we are and expressing ourselves authentically.
More so, it’s easy to lose sight of who we are while we are customizing our characters. Amidst the pressure to keep up with the latest trends and emulate the seemingly flawless influencers we see online, we risk sacrificing our individuality on the altar of conformity. What was once personal style—reflecting our unique tastes, experiences, and identities—becomes lost in a sea of sameness, as we morph into digital avatars of societal expectations.
