psyke LETTER FROM OUR EDITOR PSYKE is a magazine that is geared towards exploring the depths of personality and ego within teenagers and young adults of gen Z. To really see into each other, we must look into the inner workings of our mind, and that’s exactly what PSYKE does. We work with multiple art mediums and focus on music, fashion, and youth culture. We interview new and upcoming artists.

I am constantly being asked, “how will this publication stand out?” And to that I say, PSYKE is a publication that will exceed your typically youth culture and fashion magazine, because this a vessel for the youth’s voice.

PSYKE was created to not stand out but be a safe haven for all artists to express themselves, regardless of the medium. This publication will be so the youth has a voice, no matter how big or small, the topic is.

So, with that in mind, please enjoy the experience of diving into individuals’ PSYCHE.

The ties between streetwear and skatewear have been so significant in these past few years, that it is now considered a pillar in modern streetwear.

Sneakers, for example, have become iconic in streetwear and skate culture fashion. Thanks to limitededition releases, collaborations, and the sneaker resale market the fashion world was able to see the fusion of skate and street influences. Brands such as Nikes and Addias, wanted to make their mark on this growing aesthetic. Nike, arguably, had the biggest influence on skate culture because of their 2002 release of SB dunks.

The SB dunks were able to capture the comfortability and mobility of your average skate shoes, and turn it into something more. It is no wonder, the SB dunks are an iconic silhouette within streetwear and skatewear.

The influence of skate culture in streetwear is here to stay. The public is starting to realize how much of an impact skate culture really has on high fashion. With shows such as Dior’s Fall 2022 skatepark-inspired runway show to Gucci and Palace’s recent October collaboration, it is safe to say, we will continue to see the lovechild of skate culture and streetwear.

BOYS WHO SKATE This portion of the magazine is about the individuals who allowed us to peer into their world of skating. We learned that skating isn’t just a hobby, but a lifestyle.

“Skating has its own culture, its own beauty, it's really something that brings people together once you get to know it.”

Q1: Give us your backstory.

YP: “I am YOPPA. I’m 19 years old and I’m from Sacramento, California. I have been skating for 10 years.”

BR: “My name is Bryson, I’m 20 years old and I grew up in Toccoa, Georgia. I’ve been skating off and on since middle school, but I really got back into in college.”

Q&A: STORIES FROM THE PARK

JE: “My name is Jesse. I’m 18 and I was born in New York, but raised in Georgia. I got my first board in seventh grade, and since then, I have been on and off until college.”

KV: “My name is Kovu, I’m 18 years old and I’m from Broward County, Florida. I started skating because of a girl.”

Q2: What are your style influences and how would you describe your style?

YP: “...fashion influence I gotta say Tyler, The Creator, A$AP Rocky, Kanye, Lil Uzi, and Lil Yachty. I like Tyler, The Creator specifically because he isn’t scared to put light pink and blue together.”

JE: “I mean people describe my style as like mostly streetwear but to be honest, I love trying different aesthetics and stuff. Somedays you might see me wearing like a soft boy type fit thing, etc.”

KV: “I really don’t have one set style-- like if I see a fit I think is hard, I just put my own spin to it.”

Q3: What’s your ideal fit for the skate park?

BR: “[My] go to outfit would probably be something like loose because I don’t know it’s easier when like your knees and stuff aren’t like lockdown by tight pants and stuff, so yeah, probably something that’s comfortable and that won’t rip easy.”

YP: “I like to skate and not feel like constricted. So my ideal fit would be carhartt denim, heavy weighted jacket, Nikes. I just wanna be free while I’m moving and be comfortable. I like to live carefree, so when I wake up I basically go off how I’m feeling in that moment.”

Skating the walls of emptied swimming pools and streets,

ask any skater, and they will tell you that skateboarding is more than just a sport or a hobby. They’ll tell you it's a lifestyle with its own unique identity. This lifestyle is normally characterized by a sense of camaraderie, shared passion, and inclusivity. Skate culture is more than just rowdy teenagers, instead it is a community that creates long lasting bonds and family ties.

Historically, the skating community has been greatly misunderstood, especially in the eyes of the public. We see this with skate groups such as Illegal Civ, when they are being shut out of public places and not allowed to skate.

The rise of media perception, the sport was now seen in a negative way, framed as dangerous and reckless. The media’s attitude towards this was seen more less as a product of reality than they are ignorance. However, this harmful perception is far from the truth.

Skate culture has paved its way in many popular culture trends– some of the most notorious being the fashion industry, movies, and the way we listen to music. People nowadays strive to emulate the effortless confidence skaters

exhibit in their lifestyle and sport.

Skateboarding is not just a sport; it's a culture with its own unique identity.

What they forget is that skaters often form closeknit communities within their local skate scenes.

Not everything is popular and mainstream. Skate parks, street spots, and skate shops become hubs where people gather to skate, share tips, and build friendships. These family ties are created by the shared value of creativity, individualism, and freedom.

Skating has created a vibrant and inclusive community where individuals connect over a shared passion for skateboarding, self-expression, and the unique culture surrounding the sport.

Although skating has always been seen as an individualistic sport, the bonds that come out of the skating community are truly unmatchable.

Skate friends understand the creative, risky nature of their sport and bond through motivating themselves and each other to be better. The supportive and communal nature of skateboarding has made it more than just an activity—it's a way of life that brings people together.
