PSYCHEDELICS as MEDICINE

Conference in Reykjavik – Iceland

February 27th—28th 2025

Top 10 Places in Iceland to Visit While on Psychedelics

A Mind-Bending Journey Through Iceland’s Natural Wonders

Iceland is already otherworldly—volcanic landscapes, shimmering glaciers, and roaring waterfalls make it a psychedelic experience even when you’re stone-cold sober. But if you plan to explore with an altered perspective, here are the top 10 places where nature and the mind meet in the most magical ways.

1. Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

The Dreamscape of Ice and Light

Floating icebergs, deep blue water, and the occasional curious seal against the backdrop of a massive glacier make Jökulsárlón feel like a portal to another dimension. As the ice shifts and sparkles in the changing light on its journey to the ocean, it becomes a mesmerizing, slow-motion light show courtesy of Mother Nature.

2. Þingvellir National Park

A Rift Between Worlds

You’re literally walking between two tectonic plates— how’s that for a metaphorical journey? The vast rift valley, crystal-clear waters, and echoes of Viking history make Þingvellir a truly transcendent spot.

3. Geysir & Mývatn Geothermal Areas

The Earth Comes Alive

The ground trembles, steam rises, and suddenly, boiling water erupts high into the air. Geysir, the famous namesake of all geysers, is a true natural spectacle. Meanwhile, the Mývatn geothermal area in North Iceland offers bubbling hot springs, steaming vents, and eerie lava formations, making it feel like the planet is alive and breathing beneath your feet.

4. Sky Lagoon – Floating in the Ether

Drift weightlessly in the Sky Lagoon’s steamy, mineral-rich waters as you gaze over the endless Atlantic Ocean. The infinity edge blurs the boundaries between water and sky—good luck figuring out where one ends and the other begins.

5. Stuðlagil Canyon

A Hidden Wonderland

Towering basalt columns rise above an electric blue river—it’s like nature built its own psychedelic cathedral. The vibrant contrast of rock and water makes this one of Iceland’s most jaw-dropping hidden gems

6. Kerið Crater

A Cosmic Eye in the Earth

This ancient volcanic crater is a deep red bowl holding a perfectly still blue lake, resembling a giant cosmic eye staring back at you. It’s the kind of place that makes you ponder the mysteries of the universe.

7. Landmannalaugar

A Watercolor Wonderland

Rolling hills painted in shades of orange, green and purple, natural hot springs, and lava fields that stretch endlessly—Landmannalaugar is a landscape so surreal that it looks like it was designed by an artist mid-trip.

8. The Northern Lights

The Ultimate Cosmic Show

If you’re lucky enough to catch the aurora borealis dancing across the sky, prepare for an experience that defies description. Waves of green, purple, and pink ripple through the darkness, making you feel like you’ve stepped inside the universe’s best-kept secret.

9. The Westfjords Where Time Stands Still

Few tourists venture into the mystical Westfjords, but those who do are rewarded with jaw-dropping fjords, waterfalls tumbling into the sea, and an overwhelming sense of peace. It’s the kind of place where your mind expands with the horizon.

10. Heiðmörk Forest

A Tranquil Escape Near Reykjavík

For those seeking a quiet, meditative space close to the city, Heiðmörk Forest offers winding trails, moss-covered lava rocks, and hidden lakes. The gentle whisper of the wind through the trees makes this an ideal spot to reconnect with nature in a grounded, peaceful way.

Iceland is an altered state of reality—a land where fire and ice coexist, the sun never sets (or never rises), and the landscapes seem straight out of a dream. Whether you’re on psychedelics or just high on life, these places promise an unforgettable journey into the heart of nature’s magic.

The Psychedelic Movement in Iceland is being led by women

In January 2023, the first-ever psychedelic conference was held in Iceland. The event was monumental, with around 600 attendees and 20 international speakers gathering in the stunning venue of Harpa. The Psychedelics as Medicine Conference and the Eden Foundation behind it are the brainchild of Sara María Forynja, a transpersonal psychotherapist with years of experience working with psychedelics and her close-knit team of spiritual women leaders.

Sara María, the founder and owner of the Eden Foundation, is a graduate of Transpersonal Psychology and Psychedelic Assisted Therapy from AWE and FIVE ME-o training. She is the first Icelandic graduate of both AWE and FIVE and has inspired others to seek out psychedelic education. When founding the Eden Foundation, the PAM conference, and the non-profit Icelandic Psychedelic Association, her goal was to uplift and inspire other people to join her in speaking openly about their use of psychedelic therapies. Sara María has the innate need to share and destigmatize talking about mental health and humanity’s struggles with it, whether it is through psychedelics or not. With her knowledge and unwavering spirit, she has the ability to capture the attention of influential leaders, politicians, and even the president of Iceland, ensuring her message of healing the world is heard. Sara’s drive and passion for creating safe yet transformative spaces extend to her Eden Yoga studio, where she has created a welcoming, comforting environment for people to seek inner knowing and healing.

Silja Björk Björnsdóttir, the co-owner of the Eden Foundation and the Conference Manager for Psychedelics as Medicine has advocated for better mental health and wellness in Iceland since 2013. In 2014, within a year after her suicide attempt, she stood on this very stage in Silfurberg and gave her sincere TEDx talk titled “The Taboo of Depression.” It was the first time a young woman had been so outspoken about her mental health struggles in Iceland,

and her performance struck a chord with the nation. Silja’s goal was, and continues to be, to break the taboos and societal norms that hold us back. With that in mind, she has published two books on mental health, started a social media movement with the #IamNotTaboo-hashtag and worked closely with the National Mental Health Association and suicide prevention organisations to raise awareness for mental health.

When Sara and Silja first met in person, they instantly connected over their shared goals for mental wellness and collective healing. Even though they approached the discussion of psychedelic therapies from very different backgrounds, they realized early on that their shared passion and differing perspectives could be beneficial for paving the way for a psychedelic revolution in Iceland.

Together, they dedicated themselves to making the event a reality in 2023, forming a deep bond of love, respect, and friendship. Now, two years later, that connection has strengthened, inspiring them to bring their vision to life again. In 2025, Psychedelics as Medicine returns for its second edition, bridging the gap between science and spirituality again.

Their goal, and the Eden Foundation’s goal, is to educate, share knowledge, and uproot the status quo. Their passion is driven by the need to share what they and world-leading psychologists, therapists, scientists, and doctors already know—that psychedelics are the next logical step for the collective mental wellness of humanity.

Together, they welcome you to Psychedelics as Medicine 2025.

About The Eden Foundation

The Eden Foundation was founded in Reykjavík, Iceland, in January 2022, with the long-term vision of legalising psychedelics in the research and medical environment, slowly and carefully, with scientists and professionals leading the conversation. Their priority is the biennial Psychedelics as Medicine conference, lobbying for change and working on educational projects surrounding the use of psychedelics in therapeutic settings.

The foundation aims to support and amplify the voices of passionate researchers and other professionals in the psychedelic science field by engaging in conversations with influential politicians, research-

ers, medical professionals and psychonauts from all over the world. The goal is to bring together great minds to create a future for psychedelics as medicine in Iceland and Scandinavia.

The Eden Foundation approaches psychedelics as responsible facilitators, aiming to address the biases and blind spots in psychedelic research, so the foundation can contribute to a constructive discussion that considers all ethical standards and research practices regarding psychedelic science.

Schedule

Thursday, February 27th, 2025

8:15 - Welcoming remarks from the Eden Foundation

8:20 - Opening performance with Dominic Munton

8:30 - Wisdom, Honesty, and the Voice // Will Siu, Md.

Every life is a precious opportunity for unique self-expression. Due to various factors in the modern Western world, the full embodiment of our souls is often painfully disrupted—both individually and collectively. The healing journey offers each of us a chance to more freely embody our individual purpose and, in doing so, contribute to a greater, authentic collective purpose.

Within a broader healing framework, psychedelics can serve as helpful—though incomplete—tools as we navigate our life paths. Dr. Siu will share insights on the healing journey, drawing from both his personal experience and his work with clients.

9:00 - Psilocybin Mushrooms Bridges Cultures & Continents: A World Wide Re-Awakening // Paul Stamets

The lessons from experiencing psilocybin mushrooms are to share. As one person in a long lineage of knowledge keepers, I feel the depth and responsibilities of generations before me—and beyond our lifetimes. Nature is rich with these psilocybin mushrooms: more than 220 species discovered thus far. Many of these species had their forms millions of years before we had ours. These are ancestral beings emerging into the forefront of our awareness at a time critical for us to become more compassionate, tolerant, cooperative and intelligent.

The rich diversity of psilocybin species, hidden amongst thousands of other mushroom species, makes many of them difficult to find and identify. I will highlight premier psilocybin mushrooms used from North America, Meso-America, Africa, India, Europe and Australasia. Psilocybin mushrooms connect us with not only the Earth and its citizens, but to the molecular Universe that ultimately assembled to give us birth. These mushrooms are portals for us to evolve into a higher state of consciousness.

9:45 - Psychedelic Leadership // Dr. med. Stefan Frädrich

Life as a leader is challenging: entrepreneurs, the self-employed and managers often have to endure pressure and stress, have little time and bear a lot of responsibility. This makes optimal self-management a prerequisite for a good balance between performance and quality of life.

Conventional analytical coaching supports leaders in their development. However, the methods are often lengthy and overly intellectual. Psychedelic coaching enables faster, more intuitive and deeper inner processes with better results – personally and professionally.

Psychedelics also increase creativity, problem-solving skills, emotional intelligence and the feeling of connection with others and the greater whole. Leaders with deep psychedelic experiences can make a decisive difference in their organizations and thus for all of us

10:00 - Refreshment break

10:10 - Advancements from Academic & Association Day // Dr. Jukka-Pekka Heikkilä & Cecilie Byholt Endresen

This lightning talk will highlight key Nordic insights from the Academic & Association Day on the 25th, organized in conjunction with PAM2025.

It will focus on the latest Nordic research, policy developments, and interdisciplinary collaboration of Nordic associations in the psychedelic space.

10:20 - Safer Journeys: Navigating Harm Reduction in the Psychedelic Space // Juliana Mulligan, Allison Hoots, Kasia Malinowska, Svala Jóhannesdóttir and representatives from Matthildur Harm Reduction Initiative. Moderated by Ann Harrison.

Ensuring safety in the psychedelic space is crucial as access to these substances expands. This panel brings together experts in harm reduction, law, and policy to discuss strategies for minimizing risks, promoting ethical practices, and supporting individuals in psychedelic experiences. With deep expertise in harm reduction, moderator Ann Harrison will guide the conversation on best practices, legal considerations, and community-driven safety initiatives.

11:05 - Deconstructing Consciousness with Psychedelics in Research and Therapy // Chris Timmermann

DMT and 5-MeO-DMT are short-acting psychedelics characterised by inducing immersive experiences. Based on our research at the DMT Research Group at Imperial College London, this talk explores how these compounds can illuminate our understanding of consciousness and the brain by deconstructing the self, time and space, with important therapeutic implications. I will complement these results with our recent findings showing the overlaps in phenomenology and brain activity with advanced meditation practices, which provide further insight into alternative pathways to deconstruct consciousness.

11:35 - Psychedelic Therapy: The Roots To Thrive Model // Dr. Pam Kryskow

Dr. Pamela Kryskow will be exploring the evolving landscape of psychedelic therapy and its potential to improve mental healthcare in the Western world. Her discussion will encompass both established and emerging models, with a focus on access, effectiveness, and safety within these innovative treatment approaches.

12:05 - Lunch break

13:05 - Iboga & The Opioid Crisis: A Radical Path to Healing // W. Bryan Hubbard, Ethan Nadelmann, Kasia Malinowska, Juliana Mulligan, Robert Rooks. Moderated by Julie Holland

As the opioid crisis continues to devastate communities, ibogaine has emerged as a potential game-changer in addiction treatment. This panel will explore ibogaine’s unique properties, its role in opioid detoxification, and the challenges of integrating it into mainstream medicine. With perspectives from policy experts, medical professionals, and those with lived experience, this discussion will address both the promise and the complexities of ibogaine as a radical approach to healing.

13:50 - Psychedelics in the Spotlight: Shaping Media, Shaping Minds // Ann Harrison, Anne Philippi and Julie Holland. Moderated by Gina Vensel.

8:45 - Reopening Critical Periods with Psychedelics: Basic Mechanisms and Therapeutic Opportunities // Dr. Gül Dölen

Psychedelics are a broad class of drugs defined by their ability to induce an altered state of consciousness. These drugs have been used for millennia in both spiritual and medicinal contexts, and a number of recent clinical successes have spurred a renewed interest in developing psychedelic therapies. Nevertheless, a unifying mechanism that can account for these shared phenomenological and therapeutic properties remains unknown. Dr. Dölen will present evidence that the ability to reopen the social reward learning critical period is a shared property across psychedelics. Interestingly, the time course of critical period reopening is proportional to the duration of acute subjective effects reported in humans. Furthermore, the ability to reinstate social reward learning in adulthood is paralleled by metaplastic restoration of oxytocin-mediated long-term depression (OT-LTD) in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc). Finally, identification of differentially expressed genes in the ‘open state’ versus ‘closed state’, provides evidence that reorganization of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is a common downstream mechanism underlying psychedelic-mediated critical period reopening. To-

gether, these results have significant implications for the implementation of psychedelics in clinical practice, as well as the design of novel compounds for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disease.

10:30 - Queer Medicine: How Psychedelics Can Heal the Trauma of Normal // Justin Natoli

Oppressive systems depend on convincing us there is a “normal” way to be—pressuring us to shrink, conform, and abandon the parts of ourselves that don’t fit. Our differences are treated as problems to fix, but what if the real problem is the idea of normal itself? This talk explores how the illusion of normal is a traumatizing force—one that severs us from our true nature and promotes a culture of separation, competition, and endless consumption. Psychedelics offer a powerful antidote, liberating our imaginations to reclaim the fullness of who we are. And when we do, we uncover the greatest gift we can offer this world: our unique essence. Ultimately, the message is simple yet profound—YOU are the medicine.
