Students focus on Engineering Barnsley College supported a national campaign to increase participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) by holding a focus group with female Engineering students.

their course, the facilities, their plans after they finish College and suggestions for improvement.

Head of Engineering at Barnsley College Victoria Slater said: “Engineering courses provide an excellent path into a range of careers. The focus group gave us the opportunity to find out what our current students think and how we can improve our offering to encourage more female students onto our Engineering courses.”

‘Your Life’ is a national campaign involving government departments, private companies, civil societies and education institutions, aimed at engaging with young people and particularly encouraging and increasing the number of women into STEM fields. Female students from a range of courses including Engineering, Vehicle Maintenance and Mechanical Engineering were invited to the focus group where they had the opportunity to share thoughts and opinions about

a car dealership and that’s why I decided to study this course. I am enjoying my time here and the support that I receive from the College is fantastic.”

Motor Vehicle student Christina Wlodarczyk said: “It was great to talk to other students and share opinions. I would like to work as a Mechanic or Service Manager for
