The Portrait Society’s
We are so excited to welcome you to New York City for the annual Portrait Society Executive and Advisory Board Meetings as well as the inaugural gathering of members and friends of the Portrait Society’s Sargent Circle!
On the following pages, you will find more information about our special time together in New York. We are grateful to have exclusive access to several private venues as well as distinguished guests.
10:00am - 12:00pm: Executive Board Meeting at The National Arts Club, Room 203
12:00pm: Private Lunch at The Players Club in the Everett Raymond Kinstler Room
2:00 - 3:30pm: Advisory and Executive Board Meeting
at The National Arts Club, Room 203
5:30 - 7:00pm: Reception at Michael Shane Neal’s Studio 10C in The National Arts Club
7:00pm: Dinner at The National Arts Club
Arrive at The National Arts Club, located just across from Gramercy Park (the only private park in Manhattan).
Founded in 1898 and renowned for its expansive American art collection, The National Arts Club resides in the 1830s brownstone which had once belonged to the former governor of New York, Samuel Tilden. The NAC is the only private club in Manhattan that has accepted women members since its inception. Painters, sculptors, and men and women of letters connected and shared ideas, inspired by a thriving community of like-minded artists. Our Executive and Advisory Board members of the Portrait Society will meet on the second floor of the mansion.
Between meetings, both boards will enjoy a private lunch next door at The Players Club in the Everett Raymond Kinstler Room. Founded in 1888 by actor Edwin Booth as a club for actors and patrons of the arts, The Players has held an exceptional permanent art collection from the start, with portraits of actors in character among its best known works. The basis of the portrait holdings, along with its sculpture, works on paper, and ephemera, was the living gift to the club by founder Edwin Booth. Over the years, commissions and acquisitions by the club itself and by The Players Foundation, which has considerable fine art holdings and regularly invests in the care and conservation of objects held in the clubhouse, have deepened the collection to works spanning four centuries.
That evening, we will return to The National Arts Club for a visit to Michael Shane Neal’s studio 10C–the historic studio of Everett Raymond Kinstler and his teacher before him, Frank Vincent DuMond. Enjoy cocktails before our private dinner in the main clubhouse.
We will start our day with a visit to The Salmagundi Club. Created in 1871 by artists and patrons to support one another, The Salmagundi is one of America’s oldest arts organizations. Here, artist Burton Silverman will give us a private tour of his retrospective exhibit, Face Value: Silverman Shines. Silverman, often referred to as “the grandfather, a guiding presence” by countless artists who studied under him, has left an indelible mark on the world of art. Born in Brooklyn in 1928, Silverman’s career took off after graduating from Columbia University in 1946. His work has been exhibited worldwide, and he has been honored with 38 major prizes, including the Gold Medal of the Portrait Society of America in 2004. Silverman is also a founding advisory board member of the Portrait Society.

12:00pm: Lunch at The Lotos Club
Following our tour of Burt Silverman’s exhibit, we will visit The Lotos Club for lunch. Founded in 1870 by a group of young writers, journalists and critics, The Lotos is one of the oldest private literary and arts clubs in the United States. Its beautiful building, a five-story mansion on East Sixty-Sixth Street, was built in 1900 by Margaret Vanderbilt Shepard, daughter of William H. Vanderbilt, for her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Jay Schieffelin. It is known as one of the finest examples of French Renaissance architecture in America and houses an impressive collection of art and antiques.
