Welcome

Welcome to the new look Snowy Mountains of Music – Perisher Peak Festival! The Festival celebrates 6 years in 2014 with a fresh new look and new name, and an electrifying line-up with a feast of flavours from blues to roots, world, soul, funk, folk, traditional, hip-hop and so much more. Come along to our Festival Opening Night Cocktail Party on Friday night at Smiggins Hotel with Richard Perso and some surprise snowy acts and songs. Over at the Man don’t miss Manny Aigner, Mal Webb and the driving blues of Claude Hay or chill out at the Sundeck with Somesing Laik Zat and Sally Harris. Saturday will be unstoppable from morning to midnight with a mountain of music driving a snowstorm across 10 on-snow venues across the resort. What’s on for the kids? Perisher Peak Festival is proud to be a very family friendly event with a new dedicated youth stage – the ‘South East Arts Youth Stage’ running all day Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June with children under 15 free with a paying adult. There’s plenty to engage from babes in arms to even the most jaded teenagers, from hilarious puppets to sublime song and even an opportunity for young aspiring musicians to shine with our Youth Open Mic events. On Saturday night The divine harmonies and chilled ballads of Little Stevies start off the entertainment at Smigs, followed by Claude Hay and don’t miss the infectious afrobeats of Melbourne’s acclaimed The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra.

On Sunday ski to the beat at Peak. There’s another full day at our unique music festival in the snow to look forward to. At the Sundeck Hotel at 3pm, don’t miss the arresting Shellie Morris, the 2014 NT Australian of the Year and one of Australia’s finest Indigenous artists whose latest album is sung entirely in language of the Gulf Country. Along the way for those with a way for words, why not perform your poem at one of our many vibrant poetry events. On Sunday don’t miss the finals of Peak Upload, our new look music industry development initiative at 1:30pm at The Man. We had a huge amount of interest in the competition this year, so please get down and support the finalists as they go head-to-head in front of industry judges. This year’s fantastic music industry prize is donated by the Australasian World Music Expo (AWME), The Herd, Troubadour Music, Miss Bettina Media and Mandy Lamont Photography. Sunday Night is going to be huge with a killer concert headlined by hip-hop supergroup The Herd. Over at Smigs the music begins at 7:30pm with the transcendent sounds of The Lachy Doley Group, get down and boogie with the joyful Ethio-soul of Dereb and the Ambassadors, and finally the must-see act of the Festival - legendary award-winning hiphop headliners The Herd.

Welcome

The Perisher Resorts Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome the arrival of the 2014 Winter Snow Season with the 6th Perisher Peak Festival.

We are delighted with the diversity of the musical talent presented at the Festival – from feisty fiddle arrangements to the big world music sound of our headliners.

Over 140 fabulous musicians, poets, and storytellers comprising 40 acts will ascend into the mountains to share their passion for their art and be part of our Festival.

We are especially proud of the South East Youth Arts Stage, with amazing puppeteers, musicians and storytellers plus the Youth Open Mic!

This is another festival packed with live music in intimate and picturesque surroundings!

The workshop program has also been dramatically enhanced with great learning and listening sessions with some great artists.

It will be a sumptuous musical feast that will celebrate music traditions from around the world in spectacular venues high in the mountains.

The response from musicians, poets, storytellers to be part of the event has been amazing. The quality of the lineup is exceptional once again.

It’s exciting to see live performance alive and well in Australia. We hope you thoroughly enjoy our Festival and that you will tell the world to come to the next Festival in 2015!

Thank You

Dr Peter Hendy MP, federal Member for Eden-Monaro It gives me great pleasure to support the Peak Festival Program for this year. The Perisher Valley in NSW's Snowy Mountains will open the 2014 Australian Winter Ski Season with a vibrant 4 day festival packed with live music at the snow over the June long weekend. I would like to congratulate the Perisher Resorts Chamber of Commerce, which represents members located in the Perisher Valley, Smiggin Holes and Guthega Alpine Village resorts, and the many talented people who have put this Festival programme together. Tourism is an essential part of the local economy. The Peak Festival increases the awareness of the Snowy Mountains area as well as promoting sustainable growth in the region. The Snowy Mountains are one of Australia’s most unique family holiday destinations. Not only does the Peak Festival provide great entertainment, but it attracts tourists from all over the world to kick off the Australian ski season. I hope that you will enjoy the Festival as you spend quality time with your family and friends, whether you are skiing down our iconic Snowy Mountains or simply enjoying the music. You will have terrific memories of this year’s Peak Festival that will last a lifetime.

John Barilaro, MP for Monaro There is nothing quite like listening to live music within the idyllic surrounds of the Snowy Mountains. The Snowy Mountains Music Festival- now the Perisher Peak Festival- has become a household name in the region, giving visitors the opportunity to experience a wide range of music in a unique location. The NSW Government has a vision to make the NSW Snowy Mountains one of the world's premier winter destinations. Events like this music festival play a key role in making this vision a reality. The Perisher Peak Music Festival is one of 37 Regional Flagship Events supported by grants in 2014, following a $500,000 investment pledge by the NSW Government. There are few places as majestic as the Snowy Mountains. May I extend a warm welcome to the performers and visitors who have travelled near and far; I wish you a pleasant and relaxing weekend of enriching entertainment.

Peter Brulisauer, CEO Perisher Resort Welcome to Perisher’s Peak Music Festival. Perisher is very pleased to host the great music and experiences that we will all enjoy over the June Long Weekend. My deepest thanks go to all those involved in bringing this wonderful festival to life. Without the excellent work of the Perisher Resorts Chamber of Commerce, as well as Peak Festival Chairperson, Belinda Shore and Artistic Director, David De Santi, we would not be able to enjoy such a wonderful festival. So many people have contributed so much to ensure the Peak Music Festival is a successful annual event not to be missed. And what is a festival without artists? Thank you so much to all the artists supporting this festival. Thanks also go to all of the event supporters and sponsors for helping to make the festival happen. Welcome to Perisher! I hope you enjoy a wonderful weekend.

Stuart Schramm, Director Park Assets, National Parks and Wildlife Service

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Kosciuszko National Park for the Perisher Peak Festival. The National Parks and Wildlife Service is proud to be associated yet again with this superbly unique Australian event. I hope all attendees have an enjoyable and memorable time. Thank you to the Perisher Chamber of Commerce for making this event a sensational way to kick off the ski season. While the weekend’s music will no doubt be an experience to savour, I hope you also find that the setting of Kosciusko National Park makes for a perfect Alpine experience. Have a wonderful weekend.

Ballpoint Penguins

Carol Heuchan

A roving street performer who can juggle fire, multiples ball and clubs!

This smart musical package conceals subversive wit and wordcraft on intelligent design, retail rehab and ridding your home of excess adult offspring. Having spread their sardonic (sic) humour at festivals across Australia, these original acapella comedians return with a new crop of songs to storm the intellectual barricades of decent right-minded folk. Anticipate the unexpected, plus original and classic musical mischief from Python to Lehrer and Flanders to Swann.

You may not have heard of her but you've surely heard her - at festivals, in concerts, on radio and television (ABC 'Bush Slam') and at the Easter Show where she's the Main Arena Commentator. She's also the bird that wrote a poem that won a thirty four thousand dollar tractor. Multi award winning, nine times Laureate winning Bush Poet and notorious word-slinger, just back from her fifth US Tour, Carol spent her nefarious youth skiing 'them thar hills' - on planks as long as the Harbour Bridge - and mustering rustled cattle and wayward horses on the Crackenback Range. These days she's based in the Hunter Valley having left Cooma some decades back, possibly in a hail of bullets.

Azadoota With the familiarity of pop-rock, the spicy heat of Latin rhythms and the mysterious sounds of an ancient language, Azadoota rouse unsuspecting pub-goers onto dancefloors wherever they perform. Songwriter Robin Zirwanda is a native of Iraq, where his people, the Assyrians, can trace their ancestors back nearly 7000 years. He sings in his native Assyrian Neo-Aramaic language, once the lingua franca of the civilised world but now in danger of extinction.

Claude Hay & the Gentle Enemies Claude Hay, long established as pretty much the world's best 'One Man Band', has made an about face and formed a real band for the release of his new single in 2014. The new line up is seeing Claude break the shackles and let his inner rock god fly while still keeping in touch with his roots. The real musicians replacing Claude's looping machines are Ryan Van Gennip (Chase The Sun, iOTA) and Jon Howell (Chase The Sun, Leonardo's Bride), neither of whom are reticent about pumping out some blues-rock boogaloo. The Con Artists

The Double Shadows

A gastronomic feast! Spicy, toe-tapping, finger-snapping, hip shaking, caramelised music. Fun and irreverent, the Con Artists are a carnival of percussion, wind, brass, accordions and fiddles. One embrace from this surprising ensemble will leave you wanting more. The Wollongong Conservatorium's all ages community band combines young up and coming Con students, adult community musicians, and some of the region’s most prominent folk musicians, playing music from Australia and around the world.

The psychedelic, voodoo-blues grooves of The Double Shadows will get your feet shuffling, your hips swaying, and your head rocking. Formed on the road, the band has since set its roots in the underside of a shadowy Sydney existence. Forget the guitars; it's all about horns billowing out smooth grooves and head banging blasts, unconventional organ lines and a huge, growling voice at home somewhere between Tom Waits, Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse. Think Dr. John, Jack White, Captain Beefheart and you'll have some idea of the flames that power this beastly seven-piece.

Glenn Cardier with Christian Marsh Glenn Cardier has been enthralling audiences with his highly original, lyrical songs since the 70s. 'Without any doubt the most articulate and creatively insightful singer-songwriter in contemporary Australian music, Cardier has always done things on his own terms.' Humbug performances feature the band's distinctive vocal harmonies and rich instrumental backing from some of Canberra's finest folk musicians. While Humbug’s material is primarily traditional, its extensive repertoire also includes contemporary songs by the likes of Dick Gaughan, Dougie MacLean, Christy Moore and Luka Bloom. It also has ‘up its sleeve' rousing renditions of numerous favourite old sing-along numbers for everyone to join in.

The Herd “One of the most respected and enduring crews in Australian hip-hop. The eightstrong Sydney collective count among their number some of the country's smartest MCs (Urthboy, Ozi Batla) and sharpest producers (Traksewt, Sulo, Unkle Ho) and in the 10 years since their formation - in packed festival tents and at sold-out shows of their own - they have made us dance, laugh and think.” Formed in 2001 after the core members of the record label Elefant Traks decided to collaborate rather than submit individual tracks for a compilation. 2012 saw the group launch into their A Thousand Lives Tour playing across the country. They performed a moving rendition of Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change is Gonna Come’ as part of a Reconciliation Week special for Triple J’s ‘Like A Version’. Hussy Hicks Since forming in 2006, Julz Parker and Leesa Gentz have forged their own, very unique way into the global music scene. Fearlessly independent, the genre defying Hussy Hicks have followed a trail of possibilities, random twists and turns and discovered a musical world all of their own. The past year has been great for the girls with their latest release 'The London Sessions' winning NCEIA album of the year, the first single making it to #2 in the national Airit radio charts (behind the Cat Empire), and 3 songs making the finals of the National Musicoz Awards.

Rejecting the modern fads and fashions in music - the Jordan C. Thomas band take influence from turn of the century swing, jazz and beatnik art forms. Jorja Carroll

The Lachy Doley Group

Lime and Steel

2013 heralded the arrival of a gifted and significant new talent, Jorja Carroll. A Sutherland Shire local, Jorja had early beginnings at the age of 8 years playing piano and singing lessons. She has evolved her craft to perform a soulful mix of her original songs and her most loved covers. She has supported a myriad of Australian bands and artists to date including Dragon, Rick Price, Wes Carr, Renee Geyer, Damien Leith, Tim Chaisson (Canada), Folk Uke (America) and Diesel.

He’s the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond Organ, a player who can pump, pamper and occasionally pound the most unbelievable sounds from a keyboard: sounds that are intense, ferocious and sometimes transcendent. Lachy Doley’s keyboard has powered acts as diverse as Bernard Fanning, Jimmy Barnes, Powderfinger, The Beautiful Girls, Jimmy Little, and The Widowbirds. Now he has a second album with his own band – the Lachy Doley Group. “Singer Organ Soul” is a tasty slice of what the band sounds like live – pumping with energy and good times, and featuring both Lachy’s 1957 Hammond C3 organ and his custom-modified Hohner Whammy Clavinet – the only such machine in the country.

Imagine an escaped Irish convict and a hillbilly banjo picker sitting down at the local, to sing loving odes footstomping shanties about the darker side of the Australian soul. With a doghouse bass, a tasty fiddle and an old snare drum, Lime and Steel's sweet harmonies twang through a show of well crafted originals, moving from bogan bluegrass love songs to tent boxing call-ups on the culture wars: all wrapped up in a fast-pickin' wine-soaked family singalong.

Mal Webb and Kylie Morrigan

Matt Glass

Pete Denahy

Vocal adventurer, multi-instrumentalist and looping beatboxing songwriter Mal sings his brain provoking songs using all sorts of vocal techniques, guitar, mbira, slide trumpet, trombone, chromatic harmonica and a loop recording pedal called Derek. It's a lip to lung journey through the physics, physiology and phrivolity of all the sounds a face can make. He's like Bobby McFerrin, Aphex Twin and Cole Porter playing scrabble. All this enchanced by the fabulous Kylie on violin. Ebulliently eclectic. Nefariously varied. Family fun free from facile frippery. "You're a freak!" - Ani Di Franco

Peak Festival is delighted to welcome Matt Glass to this year’s line-up, Matt was the winner of the Festival’s 2013 music industry development initiative Peak Upload. Victor Hugo once wrote that music expresses the things that cannot be said but cannot remain silent. Matt's storytelling - couched as it is in a timeless melodic style - explores themes of love and loss with a rare and poignant universality. Since his debut release in 2010, Matt's alt-country style and talented band, The Loose Cannons have been gathering momentum and stealing audiences across the country. With the recent release of his single The Last Time, and a new album and national tour in early 2014, Matt Glass is a man to watch.

Pete Denahy’s show includes much comedy and also features his fine original songs, many of which are from his current Bluegrass release, Wishbone Road, which is songs inspired by the gold rush days of his home town of Yackandandah. Pete is responsible for the Youtube song that went viral "Sort Of Dunno Nothin'" or as many know it "The Teenager Song". In July 2012 he worked at the Melbourne Cabaret Festival alongside Elliot Goblet, Akmal Saleh and Flacco. This year at the country music awards in Tamworth Pete won a Golden Guitar for instrumental of the year.

Russell has been the anchor man of the Illawarra Folk Club and Folk Festival for a very long time. Russell fancies himself with the art of versifying in addition to being a tripe aficionado, woolly yarn spinner, tormenter of accordions but otherwise a fine fellow to have schnapps and beer with. He has recently collaborated with Jim Haynes to produce a number of Australian poetry and storybooks.

As a featured singer with award winning Black Arm Band, her collaborations with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, as well as her intimate shows she has shared her life and stories to delighted audiences. feature creatures Returning this year is the crew from Feature Creatures, bringing their animal menagerie and their vast experience with these native species to share with the weekend revellers. Intrepid visitors can snuggle with a snake and laugh with a

lizard. The highlight of the display is the saltwater crocodile but he is happy to share the limelight with a range of frogs and stick insects all shown off to great effect with some of the features from their native habitats.

While you are there, say hello to Ranger Dave and the other NPWS staff who are looking forward to answering your questions about the myriad of opportunities to explore Kosciuszko National Park year round.

prrems awards The PRREMS 2014 Environmental Commitment Awards The Perisher Range Resorts Environmental Management System (PRREMS) Operational Committee are proud to present the 2014 PRREMS environmental commitment awards. These awards recognise the achievements of accommodation providers including the ski club lodges and commercial operators in managing environmental risk and improving environmental performance. 2013 winners included Doorack Ski Club (for resource efficiency) and Brindabella Ski Club (for outstanding commitment). SAT 2:45pm - 3:15pm The Man from Snowy River Hotel

Congratulations to the lodges recognised in these awards as leading the way in environmental commitment in the Perisher Range Resorts over the past year. From Left to Right Frank Zipfinger (President SLOPES), Tony Adams (Doorack Ski Club), Mike Bromfield (Brindabella Ski Club), Jim Spiers (Maranatha Lodge - Thirroul Ski Club), Jenny Newman (Sundowner Ski Club), Robyn Parker (NSW Minister for the Environment), Andrew Harrigan (NPWS), and John Barilaro (Member for Monaro) (Photo: Virginia Logan).

What is the Perisher Range Resorts Environmental Management System PRREMS? The PRREMS provides a framework to promote the sustainable use of the Perisher Range Resorts while protecting the environmental and cultural values. The PRREMS stakeholders work cooperatively to reduce impacts, identify and manage environmental risks, achieve and maintain compliance with legislation, set environmental objectives and targets and evaluate environmental performance.

All lodges report annually on their performance through the “Earthcheck on-line benchmarking site. This information is combined with all resorts annual EMS reporting to produce the combined NSW Alpine Resorts Environment report: http://www.environment. nsw.gov.au/alpineresorts/NSWARER.htm
