AT A GLANCE WITH THE CEO April and May are always a busy time at Southport Sharks. We are moving into the football season with a strong side and new leadership team who are ready for a big 2016.

This year the new football department is led by Jarrod Field and Matt Kennedy, with Nathan Bock as Coach for the second year. With 15 new recruits and a solid pre-season behind us, we are confident that we will see great things all the way through to October.

I had the pleasure of addressing the team at a leadership camp held in Casuarina in February, to talk about amongst other things, our proud club history and culture. I have shared part of the presentation below, which is a great reminder to us all of our humble beginnings in 1961 to presently being the biggest Australian Rules Football Club in Queensland. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish the team every success for the 2016 NEAFL competition, which kicks off on April 2nd with the first away game against Aspley at Graham Road.

2016 also marks our $100k contribution to the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation. Southport Sharks have reached this significant donor milestone through a combination of our membership program and also through staff fundraising initiatives. We are proud to be an active contributor to this very worthwhile community organisation and are honoured to reach this impressive milestone.

Stay tuned over the coming months for news on our hotel development. Plans are progressing with views of the 120 room + 200 carpark project to be completed in time for the Commonwealth Games.

We look forward to presenting you with more details on this development throughout the year.

THE MONTH THAT WAS…

Southport Sharks celebrated Chinese New Year with a fantastic fanfare of traditional cuisine in Frenzy’s Food Court, lion dancing throughout the club and beautiful traditional dancers in Sharks Events Centre.

Love was in the air at Sharks on Valentine’s Day, with a delectable 3 course menu available at Carmody’s. Ladies received a box of Roses chocolates while men enjoyed a glass of Crown Lager.

New Zealand colours, flavours and sounds took over Southport Sharks during Waitangi Day. Members and guests enjoyed a delicious NZ inspired buffet as well as live entertainment including a Haka performance.

SOUTHPORT SHARKS REACHES

$100,000 Milestone

Southport Sharks have reached a significant donor milestone in three years of support for the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation. In early 2016, Sharks reached the impressive $100k mark from donations.

Donations began in 2013 through a combination of the Sharks membership program, where $1 is donated from every Southport Sharks membership, in conjunction with staff fundraising initiatives.

Through generous donations, Southport Sharks have funded the Gold Coast’s first lung function testing unit for pre-schoolers, a state-ofthe-art diabetes analyser, rehabilitation equipment and digital therapy equipment in the Children’s Emergency Department.

Along with other corporate sponsors, Sharks has also contributed to funding medical equipment that has drastically improved patient care.

This includes electronic scales to asses malnutrition in patients, a portable suction unit for use when transferring tracheotomy and high-dependency patients and a wheelchair for the medical image department.

The Gold Coast Hospital Foundation is a local non-for-profit organisation where the support of the local community plays an integral part to its purpose. Southport Sharks would like to thank its’ members for their generous donations over the past three years. Sharks are proud to be an active contributor to Gold Coast Hospital Foundation and honoured to reach this impressive milestone.

Anzac Biscuits You can’t get much more Australian than enjoying a hot cup of tea and a home-baked ANZAC biscuit. We enjoy these crumbly and crunchy bikkies any time of the year, yet many people are unaware of their origin.

The history of the ANZAC biscuit stems from when soldiers wives would send biscuits abroad ensuring they used ingredients that wouldn’t spoil easily.

The biscuits kept their delightful texture and gave the soldiers a reminder of the taste of home.

Anzac Biscuits are so common today, that they have become a supermarket and family pantry staple, although nothing beats a batch made fresh at home.

Celebrate this ANZAC day by giving the kids a history lesson while baking a batch of celebratory cookies this 25th of April.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

- 1 cup plain or wholemeal flour

- Preheat the oven to 140°C or 160°C fanforced. Line two baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Sift the flour into a large bowl.

Stir in the oats, coconut and brown sugar.

- 1 cup rolled oats - 1 cup desiccated coconut - ¾ cup brown sugar - 125g butter or margarine - 2 tbsp. golden syrup - 1 tsp. bicarbonate soda - 2 tbsp. water

- Put the butter, golden syrup and 2 tablespoons water in a small saucepan. Stir over a medium heat until melted. Stir in the bicarbonate of soda.

- Combine wet and dry ingredients. Roll spoonfuls of mixture into balls.

- Press with a fork to flatten slightly. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

- Set aside on the trays for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack so they cool completely.

Where would we be without the selfless and unconditional love and support from our beloved mums? This year, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the 8th of May. It’s a time to show your appreciation for the achievements and efforts of all mothers and mother figures.

What better way to show mum you care than creating something from the heart that everyone can share. Here’s a simple Mother’s Day recipe that is sure to make a big impact on a special day.

Mother’s Day Breakfast Platter PANCAKES

BACON & EGGS

SMOOTHIE

fresh fruit (watermelon, rockmelon, pineapple, strawberries, passionfruit pulp)

3 eggs

2 cups frozen berries

1 cup milk or light cream

1 frozen banana

2 cups wholemeal flour

3-4 slices of bacon

2 bananas

3-4 slices of fresh Turkish bread

2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy)

2 eggs

1 avocado

1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)

1 lemon

1 tbsp honey

¼ cup coarsely cut parsley

maple syrup

salt and pepper

PREPARATION - Combine flour, eggs, milk and honey into a pancake batter and cook in a well-oiled medium heated non-stick fry pan. Cover to keep warm. Cut up fresh fruit in bite sized pieces and add to a large bowl. Drizzle with passionfruit pulp and pop in the fridge until ready for serving.

- Whisk eggs, milk or cream with a pinch of salt and pepper in a bowl. Add mixture to well-oiled pot and stir until it becomes fluffy and scrambled. In a separate pan, fry up bacon while simultaneously grilling or toasting the fresh Turkish bread. Spread avocado generously on the toast, arrange the bacon on top with scrambled eggs and fresh lemon wedges on the side. Garnish with salt, pepper and parsley.

- In a blender, mix frozen berries, banana and milk. For a thicker consistently add some ice cubes. Pour into glasses and garnish with muesli.

SERVING - Arrange each dish on separate plates and add to large platter - Include napkins, cutlery and a few additional bowls and plates for sharing - Include extra salt and pepper for seasoning and honey/syrup for spreading on pancakes or drizzling on fruit

2016 AFL SEASON STARTS The AFL Footy Season is finally here! Get ready to cheer on your favourite team! MASON RACK Southport local brings his heavy rock and jazz/blues flavour to Southport Sharks!

Born in Southport, Mason Rack was raised on jazz, rock and surfing. He started playing percussions at the age of six with his musician father.

From a young age, he soon discovered his natural rhythm that is now part of his soul and way of life. His raspy vocals have been described by fans as one on the sexiest voices in the blues music scene with flashes from Tom Waits, Muddy Waters and Led Zeppelin with roots extending to Ben Harper.

With over two thousand live performances, Mason is no stranger to the stage. His reach is both local and international including stages in Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Japan and Vanuatu.

Rim the glass with salt.

Combine tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice and a splash of sugar syrup in an icefilled cocktail shaker. Shake until cold and strain into the prepared salt-rimmed glass.

Garnish with lime wedges to serve.

Mum’s the Word!

In celebration of Mother’s Day, we are highlighting one of our special mums on staff, Melanie Betty.

Mel works in the Southport Sharks Health + Fitness Centre as the Fitness Coordinator and is mum to two active kids Keira, 7 and Logan, 5.

Mel gives a snapshot of her busy and fulfilling days working and juggling mum duties.

How do you manage work and kids activities throughout your week?

There’s definitely lots of juggling with the kiddies. My partner Shaun and I have a great tag team system using support networks like after school and vacation care. We also incorporate the kid’s activities (like their sport) as our family time. We love being a part of their activities and watching how our children grow and who they are becoming.

What is your work/life balance like?

I’ve worked in the Fitness Centre for four and a half years and been a part of the Southport Sharks for 10 years now.

I’m very lucky to work for a supportive organisation that understands that I have family commitments. We have a great household routine where we wake up early, giving us time to prepare for the day ahead. Even though I work in a gym, I manage to do a lot of my training at home so I am spending more time with the kiddies.

How do you let off steam?

I have two favourite classes at the gym, both at totally different spectrums of the timetable. First is MetaFit, the class I have a love/hate relationship with. It’s a high intensity 30 minute class that never seems to get easier. My other favourite is Body Balance which is a blend of Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates. This class is great for balance, flexibility and overall relaxation.

Do your kids get involved with your active lifestyle?

Absolutely! We spend our weekends at the beach, biking, running, bush walking etc. They love to join in when I train.

“Simon Says” on the trampoline is one of their favourite games, watching a five year old do a burpee on a trampoline is hilarious. They have just started club rugby and used to do swimming as well.

They also take advantage of the great after-school sports programs during the school term.

What is your favourite “mum moment” and your best “mum tip”?

My favourite mum moment is just spending quality time with the kiddies.

They learn so much at school and every day they seem to be growing up. I’m a big kid at heart so I love that children enable us to go back to that state. In terms of tips, preparation for the week ahead is so important. I spend couple of hours in the kitchen whipping up healthy meals, and this is so worth it for the week ahead.

Multitasking is also something that works well. We combine activities, I get them to read to me when I’m making dinner and we do homework together.

! f l e s r u o Y e g Challen Southport Sharks Health + Fitness kicked off their 8 Week Transformation Challenge on March 14 creating a buzz of excitement and motivation throughout the gym.

The Challenge occurs twice a year and is structured around realistic but challenging goal setting while tracking performance using BODSCAN technology. Challengers are motivated and encouraged throughout the entire 8 weeks, both by their Personal Trainers and other Challenge members.

This year, the Challenge included one weekly group training session, 2 BODSCANS, before and after

Football Report 2016 SEASON

After a fantastic pre-season, the Sharks are ready to attack 2016 with a new playing list and a new attitude.

Each year, as a part of pre-season preparations, the Sharks Senior Team attends a gruelling weekend fitness camp, culminating in a new leadership group appointment for the upcoming season.

This year, our pre-season camp was held at Casuarina in NSW over the weekend of February 27 & 28. We want to give a big thank you to the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre for hosting the boys over this weekend.

Matt Kennedy put together a solid program for the players and they responded with a great amount of effort and enthusiasm. The weekend activities included: • 2 hour Football Session

• 10km Ironman Event

• Boxing Session

• ASADA Presentation by Jack Barry, Community Football Manager, AFLQ

• Weights Session While a lot was packed into the 1.5 days, the players and staff connected really well.

The camp provided a time away where the boys get to deepen their level of trust and respect for each other and prepare physically and mentally for a huge year ahead.

After four solid practice matches, Round 1 is on Saturday April 2nd with the Southport Sharks taking on the Aspley Hornets (away) at Graham Road. Round 2 is on Saturday April 9th at 12pm, when the Southport Sharks host the Canberra Demons. Please get down to Fankhauser Reserve and support the boys.
