About the SEG Community Bag Program

Founded in February 2019, the SEG Community Bag Program is coming to the end of it’s 4th year. In that time, the program has seen many changes, most notably the introduction of the new bag design at the beginning of 2022. The new design was met with a warm response from team members, nonprofits and shoppers. What began as a simple method of supporting local nonprofits, has become an integral part of SEG’s connection to the local community. With every Community Bag sold donating $1 to a nonprofit, the SEG Community Bag Program has donated over $432,000 since program inception. These donations have supported over 8,000 unique nonprofits and provided more than 580,000 meals for those in need, via donations to 1,100 hunger organizations.

2022 Program Highlights

New Bag Design

2022 started off with the launch of the new bag design across all Winn-Dixie, Harvey’s and Fresco y Mas stores. This created a great opportunity for connecting with stores, as we called all stores to ensure the new bags had arrived and to refresh team members of the elements of the program.

Store Engagement and Best Practices

In Q2, we took a deep dive into the highest selling stores, connecting with the top 5% of stores to collect feedback and determine best practices to share with other stores. Using this feedback, a “best practices” documents was created for distribution, providing suggestions such as where to keep the bag racks and how to get creative with the display.

New SEG Community Bag Program Website Launched

A new SEG Program website launched in August 2022 as the hub for all existing and prospective nonprofits. Here, they can learn about the Community Bag Program and find tools to promote their selected months, driving new and existing shoppers into stores. An Impact Story section, featuring interviews with nonprofits that have benefited from the Community Bag Program, shares the great work they do and how the program has impacted their organization and fundraising efforts.

2023 Forecast

This forecast was determined based on 2022 actual sales, plus 10% to account for continued growth as the program develops year over year.

The following is excerpted from the Impact Story “Spirit and passion to help cats in need.” interview with Jan Rick, President of For the Love of Cats.

Our organization is always here to help. Sometimes people will reach out for help to an organization, and they never get a call back... But we answer every call. We run to every fire. We will keep calling until we get ahold of that person. If they have reached out and they’ve got a problem, somewhere we have a resource, or sometimes they just need someone to talk... We make sure that we help everybody who reaches out to us.

We just have so much fun at Winn-Dixie. We do a table event in the store at least once during the month when we’ve been selected. Steve, the store manager, is just the nicest. He has a dog and he’s a real animal lover. He says, “Jan, so long as you bring me kittens, come any time.” We always round up a few. It’s a fun day; we meet a lot of new people to talk to, and the employees really enjoy it.

What is Earned Media

and what is the PSIM value add?

When a nonprofit is selected to benefit from the Community Bag Program, the PSIM Marketing Team reaches out via email six times before and during the selection month. Each email contains marketing ideas and templates for nonprofits to use to spread news of their selection in the program to their supporters. Templates include sample press releases, social media posts, newsletter language and marketing emails.

Each mention of SEG in print and online generates Earned Media for the brand. Below are just a few examples of nonprofits generating Earned Media for the Community Bag Program through outreach to their supporters.

I keep bags in high flow traffic areas and take the time to reach out to the selected organization each month. Explain the program to them and invite them to the store. I also challenge cashiers to sell 4-5 each day.

SEG’s Community Bag Program has benefited

8,091 local nonprofits

This cluster map depicts the location of all nonprofit organizations that have benefited from SEG’s Community Bag Program since its inception on February 20, 2019. These organizations provide important services to their communities in areas including civic, education, health and wellness, hunger relief, and military/veterans. The PSIM team works throughout the year to research, vet and regularly validate every nonprofit found or received by outside submission.

Coming Your Way… Story Booklets In 2022 the PSIM Nonprofit Engagement Team interviewed nonprofits that benefited from the SEG Community Bag Program. The result of each interview is an Impact Story, highlighting the organization’s mission and how they utilize funds raised in the Community Bag Program. A selection of these impact stories were compiled into a Story Booklet. Hard copies will also be mailed to your corporate office.
