2 COMMUNITY BAG PROGRAM

About the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program

The Community Bag Program is designed to give back to local communities served by Stop & Shop. This program provides a way for shoppers to give back with every reusable bag sold. Every time a shopper purchases a $2.50 Community Bag, Stop & Shop donates $1 to the local non-profit selected by store leadership to benefit for the month. This low/no-touch program for stores has donated over $2,000,000, provided over 3 million meals, facilitated the reduction of 62,708,070 single-use bags, and supported 5,293 non-profits local to the Stop & Shop community since program inception in May 2019.

2022 Program Highlights

Throughout the year, the team reaches out to stores and selected nonprofits, offering assistance during benefiting months, creating pushouts to provide proper inventory supply and optimizing the database to ensure it remains up-to-date with nonprofits that are active and engaged. The 2022 events below are highlights of effort and progress resulting from the continual building of this Program.

New Jersey Single-Use Bag Ban

In April, the PSIM team reached out to all New Jersey stores to prepare for the state’s impending single-use bag ban implemented on May 4th. High demand from the ban resulted in a 66% increase in Community Bag sales over the previous month, marking Q2 as the top selling quarter.

New Program Website

July 1st kicked off Q3 with the launch of the new Community Bag Program website equipped with many new resources for nonprofits to drive their selected benefiting month, as well as previously available options. A new “Impact Stories” section features interviews with nonprofits that have benefited from the Community Bag Program and illustrates the good work they do in the local Stop & Shop communities.

2,000,000 Bags Sold Milestone

In November, the Community Bag Program surpassed 2,000,000 bags sold, translating to more than 2 million dollars donated to nonprofits in local Stop & Shop communities over the lifetime of the Program. This highlight was followed by steady sales through December, ending the year with the highest selling day of the quarter occurring on Christmas Eve.

2023 Total Sales Forecasted to reach 615,115

2022 began with lower sales in Q1, due to warehouse OOS status in December of 2021. January through February was focused on assisting stores with replenishing their inventory once bags became available to order. Steady sales in the 45-50,000 range progressed through August and September.

2023 Q1 is expected to start with sales in the 45,000 range. Based on historic sales trends, an increase is forecasted at the beginning of May moving sales into the 50,000 range, these sales are anticipated to remain steady throughout Q2 and Q3. The year is projected to end with a slight increase in November and December due in part to the seasonal holidays.

MANY THANKS

The following is excerpted from the Impact Story “Empowering and inspiring young people through arts in education.” interview with John-Michael Parker, Executive Director of Arts for Learning Connecticut.

One of the awesome things about the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program is that it supports our general operating budget at Arts for Learning Connecticut. Whereas a lot of our fundraising is often targeted to specific communities and specific programs, with these donations, we get to choose where in the organization the funds are needed the most.

A big “thank you” to the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program. It’s especially exciting to see our growth. We’ve been grateful to be a part of the program for a couple of years, and this last year was such a success. This program helps show that the community cares about making an impact by supporting nonprofits. The fact that Arts for Learning resonates with people is inspiring and encouraging. We appreciate all the work Stop & Shop does to run this beneficial program.

Benefiting in February, American Legion Post 0180 raised

a total of $286.

On behalf of American Legion Post 180 I would like to extend a grateful thank you to Stop and Shop for allowing our Legion Post to participate in the Bag Program.

Recent increases in costs of fundraising were dramatically offset by Stop and Shop’s generosity to our Post. Your donation funded the operational expenses for a campaign of our own that brought in a great deal of our 2022 donations.

We appreciate a corporation that dedicates resources to partnering with local non-profits.

Thank you very much, Harold Nelson

What is Earned Media

and what is the PSIM value add?

When a nonprofit is selected to benefit from the Community Bag Program, the PSIM Marketing Team reaches out via email six times before and during the selection month. Each email contains marketing ideas and templates for nonprofits to use to spread news of their selection in the program to their supporters. Templates include sample press releases, social media posts, newsletter language and marketing emails.

Each mention of Stop & Shop in print and online generates Earned Media for the brand. Below are just a few examples of nonprofits generating Earned Media for the Community Bag Program through outreach to their supporters.

I recommend looking at the store bulletin boards, see who is posting and who is involved in the community. Try relating to the customers that shop at our location and the charities they want to support and who they can get behind. I make sure to communicate with the organizations, that connection helps encourage them to really step up and let their supporters know this program is going on.

Tyra Store #2592 Customer Service Department Head Store #2592 sold a total of 6,882 bags.

Best tip is to keep the bags stocked and visible. Customers go ahead and take a look, see that this bag is bigger and donates, and tends to really like that! When I select organizations I try to support an assortment, because of the recent economy I want to do all that I can!

Arlene Store #851 Front End Manager Store #851 sold a total of 8,616 bags.

My secret is to make sure to flood the floor with the bags, constantly stocked up. If they even remotely look low, I put more out as soon as possible. I try really hard to make sure these bags sell well, and very proud of it!

Hilda Store #509 CDH Store #509 sold a total of 8,328 bags.
