WELCOME

Dear Guests

A warm welcome to you all.

We are delighted that the 2024 Awards is presented by BBC broadcast journalist and presenter Ashley John-Baptiste, who is the founder of Be Inspired, an organisation working in collaboration with Southwark Council, and Care Leaver Covenant, which have the aim of connecting care-experienced young people with each other and help them achieve their aspirations.

In making these Awards, EB research staff consider many aspects of school management - recruitment, procurement, security and environmental pratice - to name just a few. Individuals are recognised in the School Business Manager and Primary/Secondary School Leaders Awards. Also, the Educational Resource Awards showcase innovative resources and products which help educators to deliver the curriculum.

Inspirational work goes on in schools across the country every single day. The EB Awards goes some way to recognise this. As always, thank you to our sponsors, who make it possible to stage this event.

AWARDS SHORTLIST SCHOOL SPORTS AWARD

School Recruitment Award

This award recognises an educational establishment which has invested in its recruitment methods and processes to ensure a timely intake of teaching and support staff.

The Hopedale Group

Teacher training is a particular strength of The Hopedale Group, with an extraordinary 59 per cent of current teaching staff obtained or working towards QTS whilst in its schools. This has been a growing strength over 11 years of operation and extends to promotion to senior leadership, with 79 per cent of its current team (11 out of 14) having been recruited internally - three of whom began their journey as a teaching assistant. In addition, four therapists, four business managers, two CEIAG advisors and many more staff have qualified whilst with the Hopedale Group.

Robert Drake Primary School, London

The Governors at the Robert Drake Primary School described finding a replacement headteacher as a somewhat daunting task. A flexible approach to the project was a key driver when choosing to partner with a recruitment provider, who helped the school put together a detailed plan and implemented a coordinated timeline of recruitment stages. From planning the job specification, to shortlisting candidates and recommending interview questions, the partner was able to help the school successfully recruit a replacement headteacher.

06 EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARDS - 12th June 2024 www.ebawards.co.uk

Anthem Schools Trust

Anthem Schools Trust required two IT technicians and a service desk analyst to support the educational infrastructure effectively. However, they faced significant recruitment challenges due to their unique geographical locations and budget constraints. To address these challenges, the Trust partnered with two agencies in order to deliver a comprehensive and tailored recruitment strategy. The recruitment process was completed swiftly, with a two-week timeline for the IT Technician roles and a three-week timeline for the Service Desk Analyst role.

The Laurus Trust

The small recruitment team at Laurus created a unique online recruitment brand to increase attraction, promote the Trust as an employer of choice and shout about its culture and benefits. The brand has been a resounding success, with over 1000 registrations to its talent pool and a 140 per cent increase in website traffic. This, along with well-attended events and successful referral initiatives, meant the 2022/23 recruitment cycle saw a 13 per cent increase in applicants. By September 2023, 317 new staff were successfully appointed.

08 EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARDS - 12th June 2024 www.ebawards.co.uk

Etone College, Warwickshire

In 2014, Etone College was in special measures, but it has since built itself up to have a respected reputation in the community. The school implemented a full charity initiative which looks to provide financial support for national charities and also those closer to home. As part of this, it has developed links with five key local causes which have become its ‘house’ charities. Since 2021, Etone’s ‘Community Champions’ have supported a number of successful food and toy bank drives. Its charity events are on track to raise £10,000 within four years.

Northfleet School for Girls, Kent

Northfleet School for Girls has forged links with both the old and young in its community with a variety of visits and trips to nurseries and care homes. Students regularly interact with older adults at its local care home Wombwell Hall. The school also visits local nurseries, holding tea parties with primary school children to help with the transition to secondary school. The ‘Northfleet Angels’ initiative helps disadvantaged families by supplying hampers at Christmas, school uniforms, breakfast items and sanitary products.

Lawley Village Academy, Shropshire

Lawley Village Academy sits between an assisted living care home and a nursing care home. Over the past 3 to 4 years, children and staff have worked hard to make strong and longlasting community links with the carers and residents in both homes. The ongoing relationships prove to be a weekly highlight in the community, as well as being an opportunity for children to learn from the residents. Care staff have observed and reported exceptional levels of increased positive mental health, who look forward to the children bounding through the doors each week.

AWARDS SHORTLIST 09 COMMUNITY AWARD EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARDS - 12th June 2024 www.ebawards.co.uk

Newent Community School & Sixth Form, Gloucestershire

Newent has developed links with the local town to form a symbiotic relationship. Newent Orchestra has started to rehearse in the school hall so that students can experience live music, linking together for a Christmas performance which allows the student choir to be accompanied by an orchestra. Links with the Hollie Gazzard Trust have made students more aware of the affects of violence against women and girls and domestic violence as a whole. Every year group has received their bespoke training on how to be an ‘Active Bystander’.

Windsor Academy Trust, West Midlands

Windsor Academy Trust connected with Newbigin Community Trust, a community-based organisation which provides a place of inclusion and social cohesion across three community hubs. During construction of the school, staff spent time in the community listening to how the school could serve them best. Specialist provisions were built into the design, including a new community hub with its own entrance to provide Newbigin with a fourth centre. Jobs were specifically created for local people and an Eco Hub in the school will operate as a community project.

East Ward Primary School, Greater Manchester

Despite facing challenges associated with being a deprived school, East Ward Primary has taken proactive steps to enrich children’s education and experience. The school’s partnership with the local allotment association is a cornerstone of its efforts to bring unique learning opportunities to its children. By working closely with the association, the school is able to integrate gardening and outdoor learning into its curriculum. The collaboration offers numerous benefits for children and the community.

Awarded to the educational establishment that can demonstrate innovation in its approach to teaching and deploying Information and Communication Technologies that further the learning experience of its students.

Chase High School, Essex

Chase High School has recently made eSports part of the curriculum where children play competitive digital games and compete in national competitions. As a result, computer science and IT subject leader Melanie Hall has been honoured with the silver award for “digital innovator of the year” at the prestigious Pearson National Teaching Awards. The school was one of two in the area to achieve Digital Schoolhouse status last summer, giving students a unique link to the games development industry and teachers access to resources and free training.

Barrow CVEC Primary School, Suffolk

Earlier this year, Barrow CEVC Primary became the first in the region to be awarded the National Centre for Computing Education (NCCE) Computing Quality Mark for ‘excellence in computing curriculum delivery’. To achieve this, the school worked closely with the Suffolk & Colchester Computing Hub, which has supported it with curriculum development and the Quality Mark application process. AI - The topic on everyone’s mind at Bett 2024

The Ahead stages were buzzing, hosting speakers such as Donald Clark and Carla Aerts exploring the profound impact AI will have on learning, and therefore Higher Education. We welcomed back a Bett favourite, The AI Educator - Dan Fitzpatrick - to the arena, who provided incredible insights on how to embrace change when implementing AI into education.

“Tech User Labs was really informative and hands on, getting to try and learn in person with the experts. Also hearing about upcoming developments the tech may have is great for keeping an eye on the future.”

Environmental Practice Award

Awarded to the school that can demonstrate a sustained benefit to the environment and the environmental education of its pupils through collective and individual projects.

Cornerstone offers significant experience in structural and atmospheric moisture mechanics. An independent survey for reported damp, condensation and mould demonstrated 91 per cent of all properties surveyed were dry and hence experiencing atmospheric management related issues.

Detailed reports show that the root causes are due to a host of issues and not a single problem; this corresponds with a prioritisation to understanding that damp, condensation and mould are ‘symptoms’ of a problem. Alongside providing solutions, Cornerstone’s operations withhold a commitment to educate occupants. Through providing transparent reporting, root cause analysis is delivered based on data acquired at the survey, but also embraces historical elements plus the structural geographical location and orientation. Looking ahead, Cornerstone will be sharing its respected knowledge and ultimate guidance with a new proactive Healthy Home Application for persons seeking assistance with damp, condensation and mould in their homes and workplaces. www.cornerstone-ltd.co.uk

The Wallace High School, Lisburn, N. Ireland

Ongoing grant applications and operational adaptations to the estate form Wallace High School’s ‘Project Refresh’. Florescent and incandescent lighting has been replaced by LED panels, decreasing energy usage by 26 per cent annually, while the installation of an energy monitoring system allows the school to track gas and electricity usage across building zones to adjust habits to reduce energy usage. Planning permission and funding is in place to build a standalone pavilion building powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.

Highfield and Brookham School, East Hampshire

As part of its mission to be carbon neutral by 2030, Highfield and Brookham’s boarders conceived an initiative called ‘Project Food Waste’ that has been embraced by the whole school community. Children worked with the catering team to ensure that all excess ingredients of supper on that day were repurposed. Since October, the school’s weekly food waste has been cut by 21 per cent. During the same period, chef’s waste has dropped by 22 per cent. These figures are displayed so pupils can see the positive impact on the environment.

Stony Dean School, Buckinghamshire

Stony Dean School has worked hard to implement energy saving initiatives towards reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The school takes part in the SAMHE ProjectSchools’ Air Quality Monitoring for Health and Education, where pupils use Air Monitors and review the data collected as part of the Science Curriculum. Outstanding Progress Award (Secondary)

Presented to the UK Secondary School that has made outstanding progress in the management of its facilities, finances and human resources and can demonstrate an increase in the educational performance of the school.

At EcoGrit our aim is to help prepare people and businesses to be able to function over the winter period. With ever changing weather patterns we never know when or where the cold and frost will hit and at what level. We strive to help protect our environment by reducing the use of rock salt and urea which helps to minimise the need for costly repairs to roads, car parks and structures. EcoGrit offers a safer more convenient way to reduce slips at work and around the home.

EcoGrit produces only one product which we call EcoGrit Concentrate. We supply it in various sizes from the 1.2kg handheld shaker up to 1 tonne bulk bags. It is also available in 5kg buckets with a micro scoop for application, a 20kg bucket with or without scoop or in 20kg bags. This year we have introduced 5kg & 10kg boxes as well as 1kg refill pouches to reduce packaging waste.

EcoGrit works to below -20C, whereas rock salt freezes at- 7C. It is safe to use around plants & animals and it is 80 per cent less corrosive than rock salt. It doesn’t have any storage or handling restrictions and because EcoGrit is a granular product, it is not carried indoors on footwear.

Watling Academy, Buckinghamshire

Opened in 2020 as part of the Denbigh Alliance MAT, Watling Academy is the largest school in Milton Keynes and when at capacity will house some 1800 pupils. An inspiring, thoughtfully sequenced curriculum based around three key themes - STEM, Sustainability and the environment and the development of Milton Keynes - allows students to achieve highly while enjoying strong relationships with its staff. A well-considered careers programme forges links with local employers. At its first inspection, Watling was graded Outstanding in all areas.

Bentley Wood High School, Middlesex

In order to build local and cultural relevance into its curriculum, careful thought has been given to the order in which topics are taught at Bentley Wood. The school offers a ‘learning journey’ of connected opportunities where pupils take on roles, such as as human rights ambassadors or advocates or mental health. Sixth formers act as role models for younger pupils while organising activities and clubs. Lots of hard work and dedication to maintain its ‘Outstanding’ grade has been recently recognised by the SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards.

Denbigh High School, Bedfordshire

Part of the Chiltern Learning Trust, Denbigh is currently the highest performing secondary school in Luton and has recently been praised for offering a huge range of well-attended and inclusive extra-curricular clubs, including chess, gardening and a variety of sports. Its first inspection since 2007 saw it graded ‘Outstanding’ in all areas. Its inspirational leader Donna NeelyHayes, who has been at Denbigh since 2007 and headteacher since 2019, received the MBE for her services to education in the Queen’s final birthday honours.

St. George Catholic College, Southampton

Once considered to be a failing school, two separate inspections over two years have seen St. George Catholic College celebrating its first Outstanding grade since opening in 1958. Led by James Habberley, teachers have a strong subject knowledge which they use to question pupils to check for gaps in learning, with 88 per cent of students now achieving grades 4 or above in Maths and English. Completed in 2021, a new science and technology building and multi-use games area is soon to be followed by new library and reception area.

Rickmansworth School, Hertfordshire

First-class facilities and exceptional teaching enable students to develop into resourceful and resilient individuals at Rickmansworth. Led by Matthew Fletcher, last year the school improved its 2017 Ofsted rating and is now graded Outstanding, with teachers praised for creating ‘a buzz’ in classrooms. The School Sports Partnership with local primaries provides opportunities in a variety of sporting activities for children aged 5 upwards. In 2022, a new technology block opened featuring three new classrooms and 3D printing technology.

Wright Robinson College, Manchester

Despite a challenging socio-economic background in a deprived area of Manchester, Wright Robinson College was one of the first in the country to be graded Outstanding in 2021 under Ofsted’s new framework. Eight years building the ‘Team Wright Robinson’ culture has generated improvements in behaviour and attendance, whilst cultivating a true sense of belonging. Allowing staff to focus on developing their own pedagogy has led to excellent outcomes for students. It sits as one of the top performing state-funded secondary schools in the country.
