Nor will a n y s t ud e nt be retained who, during the regular school term s, s ha ll take lessons of instru ction elsewh ere or engage in any oth e r business , which , in th e op ini on of the faculty, is incompatible with hi s pt·ompt a tte nd a nce at school or his ca reful preparation for his prescribed sch o ol d uti es, nor whose character and general influence a re n ot for the good of the school.

MORAL AND RELIGIOUS. All forms of private religious conviction a re respected, a nd those who d esire the advantages of r elig ious nurture can here find a bundant opportunities; but this, being a sta te instituti on, is, and a lways must be unsectarian.

DIPLOMAS.

ADMISSION. As the Sta te N orm al S chool is in no sense an instituti o n for th e education of children, or people in genera l, but a professional school for the special instruction and traini_ng of teachers, a ~d as its course of study, being- arranged with special re~e rence to this end, can no t be accomplished in a fragmenta ry way With a ny advantage to the stu- . dent, but with great disadvantage to the school, all appli cants a dmitted in accordance with the reg ul a tions of th e Board of Education must be persons of proper age and character, who have a fair knowledge of the common branches, and are in good faith preparing to teach . In order to enter the Elementary Course, students mu s t pass a satisfactory examination in Spelling , R eading, th~ use o f L a ng uage, a nd the rudim ents of Arithmetic a nd Geography. Students holding a certificate of qualification in th e Elementary C o urse will b e allowed to enter th e Hig her Course without furth er examin a ti o n.

Students of proper ag·e a nd character who complete the Elementary Course in a manner satisfactory to all the teachers concern:d, · a nd s h ow a good degree of ap tn ess to teach, will be granted certificates of qualification, valid in every part of the state as Second · 1lei· co urse Grade Sta te C ertifi ca tes. Students who complete the Iug . will b e granted diplomas, valid in every part of the state as Ftrst Grade State . C e rtificates.
