How we get closer to our vision: The guiding principles we hold dear:

Many voices build a better world.

Spark curious and critical thinkers who confidently contribute to their communities.

Learn with joy

Children learn through unbridled curiosity, abundant questions, and opportunities to learn from failure. We embrace that spirit and understand learning journeys are not a means to an end, but one stage in lifelong exploration.

Discover your full self

Students need safe environments where they can develop self-awareness, responsibility, and connection. We cultivate open minds and hearts so every learner can embrace challenges as opportunities, lead with empathy, and thrive in a complex world.

Honor our lived experiences

Our individual identities unite and enrich us. We respect diverse strengths, talents, and experiences and seek to understand how we each show up in the world, knowing we are stronger because of our interactions.

Be part of something bigger

We encourage everyone to be part of something bigger than themselves, make connections, and see themselves as contributors to the PS1 community and the world beyond.

Congratulations Class of 2025!

Class of 2025 Alumni Representative

The Graduation Ceremony is a PS1 rite of passage. Each year, each graduate stands in front of parents, teachers, and fellow students to address the crowd. This experience is incredibly moving as the graduates share their words of wisdom before heading off to middle school.

We are excited to share this Class of 2025 Grad Book (containing all of the student speeches, parent and Head of School tributes, and Moving Up words from all of their years at PS1).

We hope you enjoy!

Seven Years at PS1

A day… a day from now I will be ending one of the most magical journeys of my life, the journey of being a student at PS1. When this journey started I felt like I didn’t know much at all. I sometimes didn’t follow the rules like the time I booked it out of the library, mid class, and hid behind the sandbox with some others. As a consequence of that I got sent home. I feel like PS1 has taught me really well right from wrong. I also didn’t have many friends to begin with and I didn’t know what to do. Then came the pandemic and all my chances of making friends and having fun and attempting to change my ways were taken away just like that.

But when it was over I knew what I must do. I put my mind to it and made friends. I learned a lot of new and exciting things and never got in trouble. These became some of the happiest days of my life and graduating never crossed my mind until recently. Now I can’t say that I’m happy about leaving, I can’t say I want to leave, and I can’t say that I won’t miss all of you guys and the journeys I’ve had along the way, and finally I can’t say that I’m not scared about what’s to come. What I can say is PS1 has prepared me in every way I could imagine. PS1 taught me, nurtured me, and overall gave me some of the happiest memories ever. I don’t want to leave all my friends and memories behind but I know that those memories will follow me everywhere I go for the rest of my life. I hope one day I can come back to PS1 and tell a story to make a couple people laugh. I just want to say thank you for everything. If you take anything away from this, it is to take a hike because it may be hard at first and you might not know what you’ll find out about yourself along the way. What you will find out is who you are. Thank you.

What do I say about Lennox? First, I must share My favorite PS1 memory. In red class, he used to walk out of class on the DL and not tell anyone to go hang out with Esther. A tiny little 5 year old, Not a care in the world. Just wanted to see his friend Esther. That’s classic Lennox.

Lennox is the most kind, considerate, loving, child. Every single thing he does, he does it with passion, and puts his whole heart into it. When he loves, he loves. He tells you he loves you. You’re never questioning where you stand with him. One day his wife will appreciate that. He’s inquisitive. Charming. Has a thirst for knowledge. And a mind like a trap. He can’t pass an unhoused person without asking me to help them. He says if he wins the lottery he would use his winnings to build homes for them. Lennox is hilarious . He is also Braver than he knows. He’s The most loving big brother. He’s Cautious and bold. Would give you the shirt off his back. He’s fiercely protective of those he loves. He’s everything I could have asked for and more. Never has there been a luckier person than me, because he picked me to be his mom. I’m in awe of you daily, my love. The world is yours. I can’t wait to keep watching how you change it for the better. Never lose your spark. Never stop believing in your magic. YOU are the magic. You are the magic.

Love mommy

From the moment he wandered to the farthest edge of the creek during our Covid camping trip, Lennox’s special connection to the natural world was obvious. In Bridge, his love of reptiles, aquatic life and all things mysterious became something of a school signature, and, thanks to him, many of us now know more about these creatures than we ever thought we would.

Lennox’s quirky sense of humor and his open, sincere nature are standout qualities, bringing laughter and authenticity to every interaction. He’s unfiltered in the most honest way, and always true to himself and others. One teacher recalls meeting young Lennox for the first time, when he expressed genuine confusion that she could be his teacher — after all, she wasn’t wearing glasses, and everyone knows you can’t be a teacher without glasses!

More than once, Lennox has been the person to offer a gentle gesture or a compassionate word that makes all the difference. One of his teachers remembers a moment when a younger Lennox, after accidentally bumping into an older student, simply looked up and asked in a sincere and concerned voice, “Do you need a hug?” That moment says so much about the kind of person Lennox is—someone who leads with genuinity and meets the world with empathy.

Lennox, you are a deep thinker, a fierce lover of your friends and family, and a proud neighbor of Joel Pelcyger. You’ve made this community better with your curiosity and presence —and we can’t wait to see what you discover next.

You work really hard in all projects that you do. You are so kind to not only your friends, but classmates too.

Learning to Fly

When I first walked into PS1, I was like a young bird—my wings still growing, and I was not yet ready to fly. Everything was new: the people, the surroundings, the experiences. But still, I couldn’t take off.

Then came Bridge, Green Class. That year was full of fun and discovery. I learned all about the aquarium and the sea life below, and I began to open up to the people around me. Still, my wings weren’t quite ready.

The next year I was in Green again—then the world changed. COVID hit. Strangely enough, that year wasn’t so bad, because it’s when I met one of my closest friends. And yet, I still couldn’t fly.

Then Middles, middles was a turning point. In Violet, I started playing soccer at recess, that was something that sparked a passion I carry with me today— and now I play on a club team. But still my wings needed to grow.

Another year in Violet brought my leadership as I was the oldest in the class. Even though I would have liked to go to Olders with my friends in 5th grade, I knew that this was my time to shine. After that, I felt stronger—like my wings were getting closer to being ready.

Then came Olders. Something felt different. I had more responsibility, more independence. I could feel the shift. My wings were almost there.

And now, I’m a Grad. My time at PS1 is coming to an end. My wings are fully grown. It’s time for me to leave the nest, and soar into what comes next.

Flying.

Words from Jenny Daly and Shane Barach:

Beckett you are such a strong force of love, passion, care, loyalty, drive, humor, creativity, smarts, wisdom and so much more. You have been all this bright energy since the day you were born and spent the first 6 months of your life screaming at us if we stopped rocking you. When you would snap your fingers with a side grin and tilted head it melted our heart. We witnessed your sweet self from such a young age in how you cared so deeply for others from friends to family. What pure joy we had listening to your brilliant imagination come to life in your creative songs, crafting superheroes and watching you passionately dance across the yard with a strength that came deep in your soul. How you have grown to be this funny, clever and savvy young entrepreneur giving us a glimpse into the successful young man you are already becoming. We are so proud of how you stick up for yourself and stand your ground for what you know as right and true. You are so loved by your Mom, Dad, Quinn, Grandmom, Uncle Nova, Dominic, and Aria, and the rest of your family and friends. We could not be prouder of you, our amazing Beck-a-boo.

Words from the staff:

Beckett’s creative spark has long been a standout, with teachers recalling everything from his joyful breakdancing in class to his memorable talent show performances. During “Film It Fun Fridays” in remote learning, his videos—often featuring music, dance, and his two dogs—were highlights of the week for the class, full of humor and originality.

Beyond his creativity, Beckett’s journey has been shaped by resilience and a strong drive to grow. In math especially, he demonstrates determination—seeking help when needed, using his time effectively, and thoughtfully reflecting on his progress. His willingness to learn from feedback shows a true growth mindset and a deep commitment to improving.

Beckett also has always had a natural ability to connect with others, fuelled by his inclusive and collaborative nature. One of his current teachers shared how during a game of Quidditch at recess, he invited the teacher to join in. The teacher admitted they weren’t exactly the team’s strongest player—but that didn’t matter to Beckett. He passed the ball, set them up for a goal, and cheered them on even when the shot didn’t land. That blend of heart and inclusivity is what makes Beckett such a beloved part of this community.

Beckett, your journey at PS1 has been a beautiful mix of creativity, growth, and fun. We have seen you not just succeed—but transform into yourself. Congratulations!

You are always raising your hand, sharing your ideas with the class.

You are incredible, funny TikTok’s make everyone smile with your funny break dancing. You’re incredibly athletic. One day, I hope you hit a big home run. The water system model you made for the Inca project was so creative. I’m so glad you’re in our class.

2024-2025

You always have a smile on your face no matter what. I enjoy your sense of humor and your power to find a compromise. You are such a funny, kind, and loving individual. You always follow your way and never follow anyone else’s way. That’s what I admire about you the most. You were really fun to work with during the election for the Infinity Club! The sign you made for it was really cool too. Whether you win or lose, you congratulate your teammates and the other team. You are literally HIM at basketball. Also, you’re really funny, and getting to talk with you in Shakespeare is really fun. You were a fantastic friend, and I will miss you next year. Tung tung my boy! Also, one last thing: TO THE ELEPHANTS!

Greta Jane Barrett

Seven Years at PS1

Today I stand at the last page of my chapter here at PS1. After years of playing with my friends, laughing until our stomachs hurt, and my friends and I “entertaining” our teachers with our dance battles, how will it be so easy to leave? My time here wasn’t always easy and sometimes I just felt like giving up. But guess what… I never did! And I’m happy I didn’t because if only I knew how hard it would be leaving I would’ve cherished every moment and second here even more. But today Isn’t about looking back and being sad that it’s all over, today is about looking forward and being excited for the next chapter of my life. Middle school is challenging and even a bit scary. But if PS1 taught me anything it’s to just go for it and step out of my comfort zone. Math this year was definitely a bit challenging but my teachers taught me to try my best even if it was scary or uncomfortable. Now I can do algebra and geometry without being as scared.

When I was little I would always look up to the older kids as my mentors so I hope that I have become a mentor to others and will leave that footprint at PS1. I owe so much to my teachers, the ones who laughed with me, the ones who challenged me and especially the ones who made me who I am today. The memories that I’ve made here could never be forgotten. I wouldn’t be up here without my mom and dad. Thank you guys for always pushing me to be the best I can be and to my brother, Elijah, happy birthday. I’m looking forward to being in the same school with you again. Finally, thank you to my friends, for bringing me so much joy and happiness even when I’m down. Today Is most definitely not the end, but simply the start of the new beginning. So here’s to new beginnings: Thank you PS1 for a great chapter in my book.

Words from Annalisa and Jason Barrett:

Dear Gigi,

We can’t believe you have finally made it to the end of your time at PS1! Your journey began as soon as your brother entered Kindergarten—it was a second home for you when you were just a tiny babe. Eventually, you had your own Kindergarten welcoming, followed by a year at home during the Pandemic, then your return to campus, witnessing your brother’s graduation and here you are arriving at your own, closing the primary school chapter of your life!

We know how ready you are for middle school. You’ve always been ready for the next step. You take life head on and grow faster than we can keep up with! We are and always have been proud of how you show up in this world. You are considerate of others, curious, confident and persistent. You have so many talents and we are excited to witness and support you with your passions throughout your middle school and high school career. You are a shining star Gigi. We love you so much!

Words from the staff:

Greta is an imaginative spirit. With energy, enthusiasm, a vibrant voice, and a love of performance, Greta has been heard all over campus singing songs from Wicked, Les Mis or other musicals she loves. A talented artist, in Youngers, Greta used to draw during Aftercare, filling her library journal with princesses with curly hair just like hers. During an Imaginative Inquiry archeological dig, she excitedly uncovered—of all things—Lady Gaga’s microphone among the dinosaur bones! Greta played along, bringing joy and keeping us on our toes.

Greta is known throughout the school for her kindness and empathy. She has served as a wonderful mentor to younger students, showing patience and care beyond her years. She loves to play and give piggyback rides, and frequently offers comfort to younger students, soothing those who are upset. Greta comforted a younger friend after an accident, letting her know it was okay to cry and offered to stay by her side until she felt better. Her caring nature extends to advocacy—she not only speaks her mind, but she also notices, in books and in real life, when others are treated unfairly and then bravely stands up for them.

Greta, your connection to the school community is deep and genuine. You make a point to greet teachers and staff, asking real questions and listening with interest to the answers. You remind us each day how much a single kind soul can brighten an entire school.

2018-2019

Words from friends:

You are a really nice friend and I’m glad you are in our class. You play with everyone! Whenever we play you make sure I get to have a turn playing with things. You always check in on me and ask me if I’m ok. You’re really fun to play with. When I don’t have someone to play with you are always available. I like to see you running around. You’re so nice. I like being your friend.

2021-2022

2023-2024

2019-2020

I really like playing structure tag with you. You make things fun. I like playing hide and seek and drawing things with you. You are really good at drawing. I like playing with you. You put on great shows for our class. I really like when you pretend to be the teacher and read stories to the kids. Thank you for being my friend.

You love to sing and this is appreciated because music is great and it is so fun to hear you sing. You are always a good friend and a really good person to hang out with and spend time with. You are such a good friend. You are open to hearing whatever is going on and I can have great conversations with you. You are so funny and so fun to talk with and if something weird happens, you just laugh it off. When we were in line, I had this pretend button and whenever I pushed it, you would do something funny like pretend to fall on the ground or something.

You’re the kindest person I ever met! You’re a good actor, and are really kind. You’re also good at handball. You are so fun to be around, you’re so cool and you are so smart, especially in math. You are so amazing and have the absolute best style. I love how you always make me laugh even if it’s a very serious situation. You have the best laugh and the most amazing smile! I love talking with you about everything and anything at all. You are a good dissection partner. You are funny, creative, and a great singer. You have one of the best voices that I have ever heard. Your personal te\ xtbook entries are amazing. I love how you always care about your friends and put their needs in front of yours.

2022-2023

2020-2021

You are humorous, caring, and gentle. You share acts of kindness with everyone in our community by speaking positively to everyone. You are sure to always apologize if someone gets hurt, eleven if it’s not your fault. You are so good at making people feel better and encouraging them. When you are running for president, I’ll vote for you. You bring everyone joy when you dance around the school.

I appreciate how brave you are. You are really creative and really good at acting. You’re also really good at defending in soccer and you’re always very nice to me. I love your singing voice and your funny acting skills always keep me laughing. You are my slayful bestie! You have a great sense of humor and you always put a smile on my face when I’m down. You pretty much slay the day away!

2024-2025

Thank you, not just for being an amazing friend, but for being the light in every room. You have this incredible ability to make everyone around you feel seen, heard, and loved and it’s something I admire so much about you. Your heart is as big as they come, and I feel incredibly lucky to have you in my class. What I admire most, though, is the way you care for the people you love. Your loyalty, your fierce heart and your kindness to always put others before yourself is something I’ve always respected about you. You are the funniest person I have ever met and your smile is contagious. You’re really good at acting. You are confident and can communicate clearly and advocate for herself and others.

Spencer Brown

Seven Years at PS1

When I walked in the Brown Gate as a first year student with bubbles surrounding me and teachers and parents cheering, I was excited to expand my world but also nervous and a bit overwhelmed. Coming from preschool, PS1 felt enormous and full of unknowns. Who would my friends be? Would I like my teachers? Would I get lost on campus? I mean I could barely tie my shoes, I was just starting to read and I hadn’t been in school past lunch time. Now, as a Grad, these concerns all seem silly. PS1 feels small and familiar. I know every teacher and administrator, every student and every inch of this campus… even the secret ones Henry and I uncovered when we worked on our Secrets of PS1 book in Middles.

While most of my PS1 journey is full of happy memories, this year was hard, even harder than Covid. Circumstances felt out of my control. My Grad year was not at all how I imagined it would be. But I didn’t let it overcome me or change me, instead it made me stronger and more proud of the person I’ve become while here…a person 5 year old me couldn’t have even imagined. I am an upstander, a confident student, an ambitious leader and a good friend. I am ready to walk out of the Brown gate for the last time as PS1 student and take on the world… well, Harvard-Westlake… and then the world!

Words from Jennifer and Tony Brown: Words

Rewind seven rotations around the sun

Your PS1 journey had just begun

Through the brown gate curious and confident

Ready to explore a new environment

No tears or worry as you waved goodbye

Ready to spread those wings and fly

One year in yellow, two in green and two in Indigo

What a joy and honor to watch you grow

Dear Time, Ringing the Bell, Film it Fun Fridays, The Secrets of PS1

Learning with you was especially fun

Even then, you were wise beyond your years

Living life to the fullest without any fears

Olders 4 and West Oak flew by

But no moment was wasted as you reached for the sky

Shakespeare, SLC, Jeffrey Adams Buck for President

You worked tirelessly and gave one hundred ten percent

An upstander, a mentor and loyal friend

Your kindness and care for others knew no end

As you look ahead, in class, on stage and on the field

Intelligence, talent and athleticism you will wield

But your real superpower will be how you lead

Through your hard work and ambition, you will plant the seed

And at Harvard-Westlake where you’ll next go

There is no doubt you will break the status quo

When the last bell rings for you at PS1

And your days on the playground are officially done

Remember that you lived your time there to the fullest

That there was nothing left unsaid or undone

And that your greatest adventure is yet to come…

Love you always, Mom, Dad, Parker and Fluffy

Words from the staff:

From the moment Spencer joined the PS1 community, he has been a natural leader, organizing projects like videos, costume designs, and Shakespeare plays. In fourth grade, his collaboration on “The Secrets, History, and Legends of PS1,” showcased not only his curiosity and attention to detail, but also taught even the most seasoned staff members something new. In Blue Class during the Pandemic, Spencer produced an unforgettable video performance starring himself as King George from Hamilton—every line memorized, every note sung with precision, and fully dressed for the part.

Spencer’s academic commitment is truly exciting, particularly in Math. He has a clear drive to strengthen his understanding and to engage meaningfully with topics. He doesn’t just complete assignments—he dives deep, asking insightful questions that reveal his desire to understand the “why” behind the work. Willing to take risks, Spencer happily used his nascent Spanish skills to speak in front of the whole school. His notably elegant handwriting survived a first grade broken arm, which served to develop his non-dominant hand penmanship, as well.

Spencer is eager to try out just about anything. Good ideas and big questions are highly appealing, and he thrives on opportunities to contribute to the community in meaningful ways, such as through the student leadership council and as a panelist on the admissions tours. He loves connecting with friends and often creates special new languages and systems of communication.

Spencer, you’ve left a mark on this community- not just through your talents but through your genuine spirit and engagement. We can’t wait to see what you do next!

I have only been in class with you once but it feels like more. You have made my experience at PS1 so memorable.I will never forget your crash-outs. I am also impressed with how you know everything about everyone. You are very good at directing the Shakespeare show, like really really good. You always have very good advice too. You are knowledgeable, smart, and kind. Thank you for being awesome and for being such a good friend.

Naya Caffrey-Ali

Two Years at PS1

My time at PS1 has been brief but it has given me the confidence to do many new things. I feel more comfortable advocating and speaking up for myself and others, reciting poems, and acting in Shakespeare something I’d never thought I’d do. I’m also proud of attending the Pollyanna DEI conference. This was something new for me. We practiced public speaking as well as critical thinking.

Dissecting a sheep’s brain, a cow’s eye or extracting strawberry DNA are things I can confidently say I have done. Before coming to PS1, I was struggling with math but leaving PS1 I feel comfortable raising my hand in math class even if I might make a mistake. My teachers have been there every step of the way helping me and challenging me to be the best learner I can be. Thank you so much for everything you’ve taught me, my memories with you will always be cherished.

Rosie, I wouldn’t be here without you, I want you to know that I love you more than anything. I’ll miss you even though I’ll still see you every day. To my parents, thank you for everything you’ve done for me at PS1. Do you remember when I said I wanted to stay at my old school and nothing you could do or say would make me change my mind? Without you guys I wouldn’t have been able to give this speech.

I’m excited and nervous for the journey ahead. Of course, I’ll miss coming into the office to say hi to everyone, editing my writing and poems with my teachers who taught me that words like “so and just” usually don’t belong in an essay and running around with my friends from playground to playground, climbing onto the spider web, and doing our math homework at lunch. These are some memories that can’t be beat.

PS1 has given me the confidence to do many new things.. These small moments remind me to be grateful for what I have because I truly do feel lucky to have such a thoughtful community. After all, without my friends, family, and teachers I wouldn’t be giving this speech; reflecting on the most enjoyable and memorable parts of my life.

Words from Sara Ali and Josh Caffrey:

Naya, two years ago you did a brave thing. You started 5th grade at a new school and began such a meaningful chapter in your life. We are incredibly proud of you and all you’ve done to maximize your experience at PS1. You are a dedicated, curious, kind and thoughtful student. You embraced leadership opportunities and made strong connections with so many PS1 community members. Your next chapter will be yet another opportunity to dive right into a new set of experiences with the same drive and confidence that has served you so well to date.

We know it is hard to say goodbye to PS1 but remain excited for your involvement while Rosie stays on and as an alumni. We are here for you always and love you so much!

xoxo

Words from the staff:

Naya’s presence is steady, respectful, and inclusive. Younger students seek her out. Teachers trust her. Her smile, her calm energy, the way she makes eye contact and asks thoughtful questions—it all adds up to something really powerful: people feel seen when they’re with Naya. What makes Naya a leader is not just how she carries herself— it’s how she lifts up the people around her.

She’s also a deep thinker. This year, she dove into the topic of banned books, reading as many as she could get her hands on—age-appropriate, of course—and using that project to explore questions about justice, freedom, and whose stories get told. Whether she’s planning a campaign during StoryPath or picking up a friend’s forgotten trash, Naya shows us that leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about being present, noticing what needs to be done, and stepping up with grace.

Naya revels in opportunities to be part of the larger community: playing with Youngers at recess, presenting with her mom and sister about their Native family culture, and serving as an Admissions ambassador. She makes the connections between her own experiences and those of others, and shows up in the community with kindness and empathy for all.

Naya, you’ve brought joy, calm, wisdom, and warmth to our school. You’ve shown us that true leadership is as much about empathy as it is about action. As you step into this next chapter, know that you leave behind a legacy of care, courage, and connection.

2023-2024

Words from friends:

You are so kind and I’m so glad you came to this school. You’re really good at playing soccer! You were a big help when I started at PS1 because I knew that I wasn’t alone. You are an amazing person, classmate, and most of all an amazing friend. You’re always there for me when I need help and you always make me laugh. You are so athletic and try your best in soccer on the field at snack even though you’re the only girl most of the time. I only met you this year, and yet I feel like I’ve known you forever. I know this year is coming to an end, but you’ll always be my best friend. You are so serious and know how to take control of a group. You’re always so ready to learn, especially in math. You always get the answer spot on.

2024-2025

You are incredibly sweet and caring, and this year would not have been the same without you in it. You lead people when they need it— like during the election party when you pulled the group together and made everyone actually start helping. You’re so organized and a really good leader. Anytime a student is talking you are focused and anytime a teacher is talking you listen. You make everyone smile and laugh with your beautiful smile. If a room is dark you always light it up. You’re the person I look to when I need help and I can always count on you. I could not have done this year without you.

Malia A. Dawkins

Six Years at PS1

We gather here today with our heads held high, beneath a bold, and changing sky.

From playing with Olders when I was small, to becoming an older: beautiful and tall.

Each of those moments in my past, each of the lessons I learned, meant to help me last.

I laughed, I learned, and I sometimes fell, but I got back up, and I got back up so well.

To every teacher, voice, and guide, who stood with me and walked right by my side.

Your words echo in my ear whenever I try, your faith in me will never die.

Now doors swing wide, a bigger world awaits. New chances, beyond the green gates. This isn’t just a last goodbye, but an opportunity to spread my wings and fly.

My past is proud, my future is bright, and I’m ready to step into the light.

So I will let my dreams begin, and learn from every lesson within.

Thank you to my friends who have helped me through thick and thin. And to my mom: Thank you for always pushing me to believe in myself, even when I doubted my own strength—you’ve helped me grow in more ways than I can count.

-Malia

To Malia, On Your 6th Grade Graduation

*By the One Who Loves You Most*

From tiny steps to giant leaps, You’ve journeyed far, you’ve climbed so steep. A sixth grade star with eyes so bright, You’ve filled our days with purest light.

Smart as a whip and quick with a smile, Sassy in spirit, full of style.

You’ve got that spark, that one-of-a-kind flair— With jokes and songs floating in the air. Silly and sweet, your laughter’s a song, A melody that’s played all day long.

You turn the dull into magic and gold, With a heart so kind, so brave, so bold. When you sing, the world leans in to hear, A voice so rich, so strong, so clear. On stage, you shine, you dance, you glow— A rising star, the world will know.

Your sketches tell stories with every line, Your art is bold, your strokes divine. From paper to canvas, what joy you bring— A masterpiece in everything. And acting? Oh, you steal the show, With every word and smile you throw. You step in a role and make it yours, Like magic walking through open doors. But more than talents, more than grades, More than the trophies or accolades— What fills my heart, what brings me peace, Is the warmth you share, the love you release. You help, you hug, you laugh, you care, You lift the room just by being there.

You’re not just growing, you’re soaring high, With dreams that dance across the sky.

You’re my mini-me, my mirrored grace, My silly twin, my sunshine face.

And watching you bloom, year after year, Is the greatest joy I hold most dear.

So here’s to Malia—so fierce, so free, A shining soul, a legacy.

Graduating now, the future’s near, But I’ll always be your biggest cheer.

With pride that stretches past the moon, With love that hums in every tune, I stand in awe, I beam, I cheer— My sweet Malia, the world is yours, my dear.

Words from the staff:

Malia leads with her heart. From her earliest days here, she has been known for her warmth and deep compassion— always thinking of others, especially her brother and the younger students who look up to her. Whether offering a thoughtful hug, a cheerful greeting, or checking in with her Youngers teachers, Malia reminds us that small acts of care can make a big difference.

Malia is a confident and courageous leader, never afraid to speak up for what is right. When guiding her peers during the creation of our Class Constitution, she consistently advocated for kindness, fairness, and inclusion—not just in theory, but in practical, everyday ways like holding doors and making sure no one is left out at recess. Malia’s emotional growth has been remarkable over the years and she navigates conflict with confidence and care, always seeking connection and understanding.

Malia’s creativity and playfulness shine brightly. During distance learning, she lifted everyone’s spirits with themed days like “Marshmallow Monday” and “Waffle Wednesday,” bringing joy and connection when it was most needed. She jumps fully into activities, from an energetic Four Square game to scientific investigations, curiously exploring cells under the microscope, eyes wide with wonder.

Malia, you’ve helped shape a community where people feel seen, valued, and included. And while we will deeply miss the daily joy you bring, we are so excited to see the powerful and compassionate leader you continue to become.

Henry DeGeorge

Seven Years at PS1

When I first walked into PS1, I was only five years old. I remember feeling shy, and all I really wanted was to go back home. I didn’t know anyone yet. Everything felt a little too big and a little too new. But, little by little, that changed.

I made a friend… then another.. And another… And before I knew it, PS1 started to feel less like a place I had to go, and more like a place I wanted to be.

Over the years, I’ve had many amazing experiences. I’ve spent time growing my creativity in the studio, performing Shakespeare, playing basketball at recess, and building relationships that will last a lifetime. All of these things contributed to my growth and success at PS1.

But what I’ve learned at PS1 goes far beyond reading and math. I’ve learned how to speak up, how to be an activist, how to support my community, and how to keep going, even when things get tough. For example, when we found out Shakespeare might not happen this year, the students came together, used our voices, and made it happen. In the end, the play became one of the highlights of the year, something we built together.

As I get ready to move on, I’ll never forget what a gift it has been to be part of this community. I’ll miss hanging out with my friends under the oak tree. PS1 has helped shape me into someone who is loyal, confident, and creative, and it has made me ready for what comes next. Even though we are heading down different paths, I will always remember where we started, here at PS1.

Thank you to my family, friends, and teachers for giving me the experience I’ve had.

from Kim and Marco DeGeorge:

Words

Dear Henry,

We are so proud of you! What a journey it has been. It has been so rewarding watching you bloom from the quiet shy kiddo that walked into Red, into a confident, caring and compassionate, almost teenager! Always tinkering (destroying the garage in the process), your curiosity is inspiring. I love how you want to know how things work, constantly asking if you can take apart everything to see what makes it tick. We are confident this curiosity will serve you well in whatever you choose to do. We are so lucky to have a chef in the family. Your Bananas Foster is a family favorite. Not only are you an amazing family member, but you are also the best friend that anyone could ask for. You stand up for what is right, which is not always what is easy.

We love you to the moon and back again,

Mom and Dad

Words from the staff:

Henry leads not with volume, but with heart. He doesn’t just complete assignments—he investigates. He asks the next question. He follows an idea as far as it will go. Whether it was diving into fieldwork and interviews for The Secrets of PS1 or pointing out a legitimate building code violation in the library—yes, really—Henry’s attention to detail and thirst for understanding often leave him with a plan in hand and notes already started.

Henry is a natural innovator—someone who dreamed up a drone-powered trash collection system for a model of the Santa Monica Pier, and who constantly brought both imagination and structure to group projects. Though quiet in earlier years—an observant presence in the room—Henry grew into someone who could lead with intention and care. He brought balance to team projects, offered witty remarks that caught adults off guard in the best way, and became visibly animated when something truly captured his interest—especially basketball, where his inner spark lit up the court.

Henry is also a loyal brother and friend. His playful, protective relationship with Max—even carrying him off the field mid-game—is just one example of the deep bonds he forms. And over time, we’ve seen his confidence grow as he learned to advocate for others and, increasingly, for himself.

Henry, your quiet intelligence, creative mind, and kind heart have left a deep impression on our community. You’ve shown us that leadership doesn’t always have to be loud, and that sometimes the most powerful ideas come from the softest voices.

2018-2019

Words from friends:

I like when you give me a test of moves to get stronger. You are such a nice friend. You teach me a lot of good things. You’re a very fast runner, you always want to play and you never exclude anyone even if they aren’t playing the game the way they are supposed to.. You’re a fun kid and I love being your friend. You are good at sports.

You are really funny and you are always making fun of yourself to make others laugh. I like when you are really silly, especially when you keep saying “emotional damage” for no reason at all. You are a good sport. You are a good kickball player and a good goalie when we play quidditch. I like your personality and think you are a great friend. Remember at the beginning of the year we were friends the first day and we didn’t even know each other? Thanks for being a really good triplet. You are a very good homie squad member.

You’re so fun and I like hanging out with you. You’re really good at 4 square and dodgeball and you make me laugh. You are the best! You are so good in PE and it’s so funny how you always ask me to watch anyone but you. You’re a really good goalie. You’re so sweet and nice. Your smile lights up everyone’s day. You’re so athletic and you’re incredibly good at making friends. You are so good at math and you are great to have in a project group. You always bring in cool things for science and you add so much to our work. You were an amazing ghost in Julius Caesar and it was fun acting in the play with you.

2022-2023

2020-2021

When I think of the word, “Nice”, you immediately come to my mind. You are an amazing goalie at soccer and cheer us up when we are losing. You often try your best especially when things are hard for you. You share the coolest ideas and gadgets on Zoom. Your cheery personality can brighten someone’s day. You are so mindful of others and have a good heart.

You are so good at sports and you are always working hard to win. I love finding crystals with you at Malibu beach. You are super good at science and I love playing pickleball with you! You are always there for people when they need you and you are a reliable friend. I really enjoy the time we spend together. You’re pretty hilarious.

2024-2025

Where do I start? “Go spit out the gum.” You’re funny without even trying. One word comes out of your mouth and you get the whole class laughing, even the teachers. Your humor is out of this universe-You never fail to make anyone around you laugh! Henry, the man. You are crazy and absolutely insane at basketball; you should be in the NBA. Hopefully, I get a growth spurt so I can be tall just like you. I appreciate that when we play basketball you will always play defense and you will always get the rebound, then give it to another person and let them get a shot, and if they miss, you give it to them again till they make the shot. I enjoy making crepes and different types of food with you (I can still smell garlic on my fingers). From getting cooked in arm wrestles to talking about baseball, it has been fun being in your class.

Max Fissmer

Six Years at PS1

Here I stand as a graduate of PS1. One thing that I have found out about myself is that I love taking things apart and PS1 has let me explore this. For example, one of my teachers was having a problem with a white noise machine and asked me if I could fix it. I said yes even though I knew I couldn’t. When I took it apart I learned that white noise machines weren’t speakers that played white noise but were actually a fan spun by a brushless motor, I also learned that brushless motors actually spun an object magnetically. My current teachers let me take apart a sheep brain and a cow’s eye. Did you know the lens in your eye is actually a ball and not a disk and that brains have the consistency of stiff tofu? This speech was hard for me to write because like I said, I like taking things apart but not putting them back together. In a way, this has been a chance for me to take myself apart and see how I work. Be it a noise machine, a sheep brain, a problem in algebra and other things I have yet to imagine, I look forward to continuing to learn from taking things apart.

I would like to thank my parents and my brother for making this possible, and everyone else for being here. Thank you.

We don’t remember the first time we locked eyes over something you said: It wasn’t when you tried to say the word “truck” at one, or when you identified an Apparat song from the backseat when you were three, or the anatomical structure of a crayfish when you were six, or explained how acid rain functions (and forms) when you were eight. The truth is that you’ve been making us laugh and sending us to the encyclopedia to look up your references for most of your conscious life. Being your parents is a treat—and an education. Honestly, we have no idea where you came from, how you know what you know, or what you’ll go on to do in the world, but we are thrilled to be along for the ride.

Putting your precocious intelligence and fascinating mind aside for a minute, the thing that makes us both the proudest to be your parents is your kindness. You are a beneficent older brother—Sam has no clue how lucky he is!—and a gentle steward of other kids. Strangers and school friends alike report that they see your sweetness and care, and watch you patrol for where someone might be feeling hurt, left out, or sad. We also love watching you check your own integrity and make a correction, often in mid-sentence: “As I’m telling you [typically: why you can’t do your homework], I know it’s not entirely true…” This gives us both so much confidence that you will always leave each space a bit better than how you found it; that you will put your endless energy and capacious mind toward solving problems for the world and not adding to them.

Max, we know it’s also not always easy to be you, that there’s so much going on up there in your head that it can derail your focus, or give you a migraine, or create a lot of overwhelm and frustration when things that should be easy sometimes are not. But we also know that every week, you become more capable and more confident, and more fully yourself. If that’s even possible. Max, you are a mystery and enigma: A self-proclaimed “science-loving nerd” who also has a fearless appetite to discover new things and push your own limits. It is so fun to watch you rip at a gallop across meadows in Montana on horseback, take out a series of bottles with near-perfect aim, and be the first kid into the river to hunt for water snakes and snails. You are a one-of-one, unlike anyone we’ve ever met. We can’t wait to watch you tackle this next chapter in your life. Your curiosity, your empathy, your intelligence, and your grace will take you so far and we’ll be cheering you on the whole time.

Love, Mom & Dad

Words from the staff:

From a young age, Max has been a hands-on, industrious creator, turning ideas into action. He often crafted custom-made classroom organizational tools in middles and was a founder of the infamous “Crack Hunters” club, dedicated to uncovering the campus’s tiny mysteries. Max’s teachers have long celebrated his engineering mindset, seeing Max’s desire to peel back the layers of the world and understand how each part works.

Max’s deep and reflective thinking shines through in conversation. He’s a creative thinker who brings energy and insight to every discussion—the science experiments scattered across his bedroom, early morning reading in the library, the trajectory of paper airplanes, or researching his upcoming culinary adventure.

Max is about connection. He is a true friend, a loyal classmate who excels at collaborating, and a loving brother and son. He knows how to lighten the mood and lift the spirits of those around him. And Max takes great pride in being funny—and it’s well earned. Even when a migraine strikes in the middle of a joyful camping trip, Max manages to make the teachers caring for him laugh out loud. His wit is sharp, his timing perfect, and his jokes often come wrapped in insightful observations about the world that are always entirely his own.

Max, we have been graced by your interest in people, as you happily dive deep into real conversation. You are generous with your interest in others and your creative curiosity, and we are sure you will continue to welcome others to explore and build.

2019-2020

Words from friends:

You are never sad and that makes me laugh. You always have a muffin as big as your head for snack and we call it a Max Head Muffin. You were a really cute baby. You like to play goo goo ga ga with me and we laugh a lot! You will always play spies or pirates with me.

Max you’re funny. I like that we both go to Dr. Brown. You are funny and good at making airplanes. You are a close friend. You are very funny! I feel powerful when you’re nearby.

You are imaginative and comes up with crazy, cool ideas.

You are very smart and helpful, and we had a good year. You’re really fun to be around. You are in a good mood all the time and you’re very smart. It’s so fun working with you and being your friend. You are so nice to me and you always have a positive attitude. You are so smart and I love your passion for everything you do! You’re very kind, and an open minded person! You are a great person to have a conversation with, because you always pay attention, and you are very caring, even about people.

2022-2023

I have a great time playing with you. Playing chase before school and structure tag is so fun and always makes me laugh! I love “Krack Hunting” with you - we find everything in the Euclid benches - pencils, pennies, dominoes, metal - everything! You are so persistent. When you broke your hand - you kept trying so hard to participate in writing activities. You even tried to learn to write with your other hand. It was amazing. You are so active in your learning. You pay attention and always ask questions because you want to learn more about what we’re learning.

2024-2025

You are very smart, you are always asking the right questions with very descriptive words. You are always in the mood to do whatever and you will not complain, even when you do not want to do something, you just look for the upside and make the most of it! Have you noticed that Max always has something to do and is never ever bored? I always love seeing what you will explore next. You are so funny, you are always making me smile even if I am in a bad mood and do not feel like joking around. You are very kind because you are never mad at anyone. You have always been a good friend and have always been so kind, helpful, and thoughtful, and have just always been that way. You always bring so much joy to the room. Our classroom would be so boring without you in our class. Never stop being yourself and just be you.

Dylan Rose Fried

Two Years at PS1

Bubbles

I started PS1 last year. My experience was probably different from others because when I walked through the gate on my first day I was feeling a whole different kind of surprise than all my peers had when it was their first day. They were all five years old and were probably surprised because they were surrounded by bubbles. They were twirling around thinking, “What could be better than this!” On my first day, I was also amazed, but because I thought bubbles on your first day were pointless, foolish, and definitely not needed.

Grant was the school I transferred from. I left right before the fifth grade and up until that moment, graduation was all I thought about. Getting to do a self portrait on a square tile that would be on the school wall forever, standing up on stage next to all my friends, and spending our fifth grade year together. Then one night my world turned upside down. When my parents told me I was switching schools I was beyond mad, but I also didn’t understand why.

But now I do. Looking back, if there was one thing I could tell my past self it would be, “You are going to love it!” … And… “This is nothing compared to what’s coming your way.”

Unfortunately, my dad’s house was lost in the palisades fire and I know I wouldn’t have been able to handle it without my family and the friends that I have made at PS1. All the people around me were so supportive and it made me feel so loved and special. I can’t thank you guys enough for being so kind and helpful. I know it can be hard to help when you don’t know how it feels to lose a home, but all the donations and friendliness was so kind. Although this was an awful experience it helped me understand what the bubbles are for.

If you look up what a bubble it will say something like, “A bubble is a spherical mixture of soapy water that has been filled with air.” But at PS1 it means more than that. It means “Welcome, come join the community.” Because just like bubbles, the PS1’s community lifts you up and helps you soar.

from Kristin Martin and Andrew Fried:

Words

When you were a very little girl, we used to watch on the baby monitor as you climbed out of your crib. It was a process that took a few days for you to master. At some point you figured out that you could only manage to pull it off if you moved the little stool in your room and placed it in the proper position so that when we left you for bedtime, it was properly staged - you could climb out of the crib, on to the stool and safely on to the ground where you could then play with all your toys, never suspecting for a moment that your parents were watching you the whole time.

You were careful and pragmatic about it. Getting the stool in to its proper place at some point during the day. When the time was right, carefully climbing out of the crib, so as not to get hurt and not make too loud a sound.

When we first saw you doing this, we were so nervous! “What if she falls?” “What if the crib falls over on top of her?” Then we watched. And we saw our daughter Dylan, learning what she needed to do to climb out of her own crib safely so she could play on her own.

And now we’re doing it again. Watching you as you put all the pieces together. Being careful. Being pragmatic and doing all the things you need to do to learn, to grow and to get to this next exciting stage of life. Maybe you don’t realize that we’ve been watching you closely this whole time…

First at Piper, then at Grant, and ultimately with your friends at PS1. “What if she falls???” But we watched, and we saw our daughter Dylan learning all she needed to learn in order to climb out safely.

We are so proud of you. As a daughter, as a sister, as a granddaughter and as a friend. As OUR friend. We watch you blaze your own trail in this world and we learn from you and with you. Life is not always the easiest – and we have all definitely dealt with our share of curve balls in the last several years, but your confidence and optimism helps us all take on tomorrow with grace and a smile.

We are so excited for what’s ahead Dylan. All the adventures you’ll go on. The experiences you’ll have. All that you will learn. All that you will master. And just know that we’re here, cheering you on the whole way and still just trying to watch. We love you so much. Congratulations on all the wonderful work you’ve done at PS1 and we wish you luck, love and friendship in all the chapters that lie ahead.

Words from the staff:

Dylan’s care for others is marked by quiet strength, sincere kindness, and deep emotional insight. Her empathy is a way of being. She doesn’t just say hello in the morning; she checks in, she listens, and she genuinely cares how you’re doing. And before you part ways, she always takes a moment to wish you a good day. It’s a small gesture that is meaningful and memorable.

Dylan’s compassion is evident in her relationship with her younger brother, Brody. She doesn’t just look out for him—she lifts him up. She’s made sure he feels safe, included, and valued, even when it meant putting her own needs second. Dylan has also been a gentle and steady presence for younger students. She meets them with kindness and respect, modeling what it means to lead with heart. Her ability to connect across age groups, social groups, and even difficult situations has been a hallmark of her time here.

Dylan’s empathy is matched by her intellect and creativity. Whether she’s brainstorming with a team or designing a digestive-system obstacle course in science, she brings thoughtfulness and originality to everything she touches. Her natural leadership is grounded in authenticity. She encourages others, supports them, and isn’t afraid to have hard conversations when they matter.

Dylan, your compassion, your wisdom, and your unwavering kindness have helped shape this community. You have stayed true to yourself as you care deeply, lead gently, and love fiercely—and we are better because of it.

Words from friends:

I could not imagine my life without you. We are so alike it is like we are the same person. When I first met you at the beginning of the year we were just strangers to each other. We slowly started chatting with each other and branched closer together. And now we are the closest friends like we’ve been friends forever. You are such a sweet and smart classmate. You are very good at Old Maid, cheerleading, and playing with younger kids. I love your style and I don’t think I could handle not being in your class. You are the best person ever in existence. You are such an incredible , helpful, friendly person, I’m so glad that you came to PS1 this year.

2024-2025

DILL PICKLE, you are the SWEETEST and I mean the SWEETEST girl in our class. You are nice to everybody, and you never leave anyone out. You are also a funny, kind, supportive, loyal, and amazing person. You are so mature and helpful. I literally love you as a friend! I’ve never seen someone laugh harder than you. Even if the smallest things happen, suddenly you’re laughing so hard tears come out of your EYES. You are most definitely a leader and never a follower, and you’re always supportive of your peers. I’m happy library is your jam. You are an indescribable human being, and I have had an incredible time being in your class.

Seven Years at PS1

My PS1 journey has been great but different than I thought it was going to be. PS1 was like my journey to Hawaii. They both had a lot of adventures. My first year was amazing and I made lots of friends, many that are still my best friends.

But then Covid started in my second year. Covid was like sitting in the plane on the tarmac for two hours. It was so different from what I was used to and it was difficult to learn those two years during covid. I missed campus and seeing my friends every day.

In Violet we went back to school but we had to wear masks. And every Wednesday we had to get tested for Covid. My 4th grade year in Violet I went on the camping trip. The camping trip was really fun, and we learned how to play gaga ball. That year we also learned about Santa Monica’s history. I studied a Jewish deli and found out that my grandpa once owned a Jewish deli.

In 5th grade we learned about the human body. I remember making an arm out of cardboard and plaster. We added a bicep and labeled the radius, ulna, and the humerus. We added a working hand. We used strings to make the fingers move. Later that year we dissected a sheep‘s brain, a cow eye, and a pig’s heart. At first it was disgusting but then I really loved it. The smell was still weird.

This year, in 6th grade we did our own mock election. We would get into groups, also known as political parties. My political party was the American Equalists. On election day, which was also the same day as the real election, we brought in food and drinks to celebrate. We came in second place. The Cool Keys won. Like a good vacation or a trip to Hawaii, eventually it has to come to an end. I will always remember PS1, the amazing memories I made here, and I am looking forward to my next journey.

Words from Anna and Steve Gordon:

We have loved all the adventures you have taken us on along the way of your growth and look forward to path ahead and the many adventures that await. Keep being curious and never give up. We love you so much and continue to shine bright.

Words from the staff:

West leads not by seeking the spotlight, but by example. He’s the older student who welcomes younger ones into a game, the friend who quietly checks in when someone’s having a hard day and in class this year he took new students under his wing with support and encouragement. He brings a steady, kind presence to his peers—and to the larger school community—through his involvement in the PS1 Student Leadership Club.

West approaches school with quiet determination and a strong sense of purpose. He takes initiative in his learning, applies feedback thoughtfully, and brings care to his academics. West’s consistent upward trajectory convinces his teachers that his possibilities are limitless. He modeled engagement and hard work in his class this year, eagerly approaching challenges and elevated expectations of sixth grade, and enjoying the learning that came with it.

West loves to play for the fun of the game and the time spent with friends. His joy is clear to anyone who’s seen West in action at recess where West shines with confidence. He comes alive when he talks about sports, especially baseball and golf, and it is a key part of who he is and how he connects with others. Whether jumping into a game on the field or during his earlier years, hosting spirited Beyblade tournaments, West has always been about his friends. Even after breaks or time away, he never missed a beat and was always able to jump right back into the social fun.

West, people flock to you for your kind nature, your even demeanor, and your sense of fun. We can’t wait to see how this carries you forward!

2018-2019

Words from friends:

You are a nice friend. You play with me when I don’t have anyone to play with. You are really funny and I think it’s funny when you spy on me. It’s fun being your partner for the energy dance. I like being your friend. One time, you even helped me clean up the blocks even though you didn’t make the mess. You are a good partner because you listen to other people’s ideas. I think you are the expert at Minecraft. You are kind.

2021-2022

2023-2024

2019-2020

You are a really good friend and I like having playdates with you. You are fun. I like playing games with you. I like writing with you. I want to have a playdate with you because you are a nice friend. I am happy you are in my class. You make the really good fuse beads. I like playing soccer with you.

You are very flexible. Like when you want to play Elimination Tag but we are playing 4 square, you will play with us and adjust. You are really funny and you always do funny things that make me laugh. You have a very active personality. I’ve never seen you tired or low-energy, you always have lots of great energy. You can really multitask, like on the California Map we were making, you were creating the map and talking to your friends but I could trust that you were still focused on our group and what we needed to do. You have really good ideas and are really aware of your surroundings.

Thank you for being so welcoming. You also praise all of your friends which I think is cool. You are amazing at baseball when we play baseball in P.E you make home runs all of the time. You are a very kind and nice friend and I’m honored to be one of them. You’ve been my friend all the way back since Youngers until now, and through all of that time you’ve been a great friend. I can’t even count the amount of time I’ve spent at your house. You’re really cool and amazing to talk to. You are also really sporty. You have a great sense of humor and your jokes always make me laugh. You help me when I don’t understand math. In P.E. I notice you try your hardest with games. You’re a good sport.

2022-2023

2020-2021

You love making friends. You are very fun to play tag with and you are very nice. I like how you play with me and everyone ♥♥. You’re super cool and nice. You’re really the king of soccer! I like all of your sweatshirts. You are good at tag and other sports. I think we have a lot in common. You are always a very good friend! You are funny and hard working. You care for people and stick up for people. I feel like a kind person with you.20

You are such a great sport. At PE, we were playing soccer. Your team didn’t win, but you said “good game” to everyone and moved on. You are a great friend. In kickball, when you were playing and I was on base, you kicked that one ball so far. You came up to me and jumped up and down with excitement. It’s always so much fun to play with you. You are so cheerful. Remember that time when me and some classmates were talking about baseball? You heard us and jumped right in to share all you knew. You had such a positive attitude.

2024-2025

You are funny, kind, smart, athletic and loyal, but most of all you are a great friend. I can’t believe that we only met this year. It feels like we’ve known each other for so much longer. You are kind to everyone in a game and any subject. You are hardworking in writing, goals, math, chemistry, and Shakespeare. I love seeing your magic tricks. They always confuse me with how you did it. Whenever you learn a new trick you always show it off and I love that about you. I remember those brownies you made for the bake sale, they were soooo good. I am so inspired by how you want to be a famous chef when you grow up. You have such a funny personality, yet you focus on what you’re supposed to do. If we are working you’ll make jokes and get a conversation going but you also make sure everyone’s working and having a good time. You are such a good classmate.

Otto Hisaki Inaba

Seven Years at PS1

My learning experience at PS1 is like the branches on the oak tree above me. On my first day of school my eyes glistened at the sight of the rippling floating bubbles. A new branch sprouted that day, my future at PS1. Through the Red Class, even though my branch was young and twig-like, it still managed to grow, and my mind became more and more knowledgeable about the five senses.

But my time was cut short, that beautiful branch split with the start of covid. It was a new environment, new surroundings. Those ecstatic faces that I once knew were blank canvases masked in black. Isolated from one another, screens were a daily tool.

Finally able to venture back to PS1, that once-flawless branch grew back, beginning again in Blue Class learning about the animals under the sea. Then in Green Class, I sprouted up as a mathematician in geometry. Moving on to Middles, in Violet I learned how sea level rising is changing our world.

Ready, yet slightly nervous, I stepped in the class we know today as East Oak, back then Olders Four. That year covered biology, learning how to use decimals, and stepping confidently and courageously on and off stage. Looking back to when I was in Youngers, still like a small twig gazing up at those chest-high chin-upped faces of sixth graders, and now I am one, a big strong branch. Math as a sixth grader was much more challenging than before, and also transitioning to our chemistry phase was a new experience.

My branch has tremendously grown since the first year of Youngers. It has taken a temporary pause growing and is looking down on how far it has come. But that’s just for now, because next year holds growing and learning ahead.

Words from Darien Williams and Jeffrey Inaba:

Since the first day you walked through the Euclid gate you started to dream big dreams about the person you wanted to be. You were eager to make friends and share your excitement so they would dream big dreams of their own. It was befitting that a couple of years later you were crowned, ‘King of Yet!’ When you first learned about growth mindset, it totally clicked. Soon you were off encouraging your Bridge friends, reminding them they just hadn’t achieved their particular goal ‘yet.’ You’d say to them, it was only a matter of time and effort before they would.

As the years passed and you experienced ups and downs, achieving some goals and notothers, you remained as enthusiastic as ever about dreaming big dreams. It’s becoming clear now that you believe being fulfilled by your dreams is just as valuable as fulfilling your dreams. You set goals that energize your spirit, challenge your abilities, and deepen your friendships - a growth mindset that the time and effort to pursue a goal can be the sources of greater joy than achieving the goal itself.

Someone once said, ‘Shoot for the moon, you may just hit a star.’ Now that you’re about tograduate and walk through the 12th Street gate, you’re showing by example a great lesson you learned at PS1: that when a child is encouraged to dream, his dreams might come true, but better yet he may discover a bright beautiful universe along the way.

Darien Williams

Dear Otto,

Your lion’s heart shines bright, steady and brave. It is a rare and real joy to watch you unfold— to witness your curiosity, your kindness, and your gentle listening, to notice how you feel deeply and live with enthusiasm and humor.

You make meaning from every experience, pushing yourself with quiet discipline, opening your arms to life and its lessons. Your smile and clear eyes bring comfort and warmth to those around you.

During your time at PS1, you discovered your values, found your belonging, and began to know yourself.

Now, as you step into your expanding world, we’re cheering you on, carrying baskets of love and support. Keep going, one strong, generous step at a time.

Love, Mom

Words from the staff:

Otto’s emotional intelligence is one of his defining qualities. In SEL discussions, he brings vulnerability, insight, and kindness, modeling for others what respectful, thoughtful engagement really looks like. He also holds himself—and those around him—to high standards. And yes, a great sense of humor. Who else could proudly show off a new Puma tracksuit with such confidence that older students smiled, laughed, and walked away thinking, “That was actually pretty cool”?

Otto approaches learning with the same care and attention he brings to friendships. He’s curious, intrinsically motivated, and incredibly observant—whether he’s analyzing a math concept, holding his Spanish teacher accountable for slipping into English, or noticing the fine details during a science activity. And then there’s the soccer field—Otto’s second classroom. Watching him play is like watching a kind of art. He’s learned so much through sports: how to win and lose with grace, how to play fair, how to support his team. His love for the game has shaped him into a leader and a friend who understands that greatness includes kindness, fairness, and fun.

Otto is also a deeply loving brother and a loyal community member, popping up from red class to send buddy messages, or talking proudly about his chore of turning the lights on and off at home.

Otto, you lead with both humility and strength, and are grounded in care, curiosity, and quiet confidence. We are so lucky to have had you share your gifts with us.

2018-2019

Words from friends:

You are a really nice friend to have. You are nice and considerate. You are a big part of our team. We like you a lot. You are really fast and really good at tackling people. I love doing different stuff with you. If we have an argument, we always make up easily.

2021-2022

You are a good sport and shake hands with your opponents. When I have a difficult time, you stand by my side. You are fearless and will try anything on the soccer field. You stand up for yourself and others with your words. You are so determined to push through challenges. You are so willing to try new things. I respect how you try to get our group to focus on our work.

2019-2020

I like to have playdates with you. You are really good at the monkey bars. You always stand up for yourself and you let people play with you. You are nice and kind. You are good at doing tricks on the monkey bars and you don’t even get hurt. I am really glad you are in our class. I like to play with you at school. You are a really nice boy. I like playing with you.

2022-2023

2023-2024

2020-2021

You are so funny in our class. You are confident in asking questions when you don’t understand something. When we are on Zoom, you know how to cheer me up when I am sad. You speak your mind and I admire that. You are so encouraging to others even if you are having a hard time. You have a growth mindset and have learned the power of the word, “Yet”.

You are an amazing athlete and a great sport. You root all of your classmates on, no matter whose team they’re on and make us all feel great whether we win or lose. You are super unbiased. At PE, you pass to everyone. In the classroom, you branch out to work with and sit with everyone. Especially during meeting times. During class time, you are super focused. In your math group, I saw you zoned into your multiple tower. During Free Choice Friday, you are so inclusive. You make origami for everyone!

You’re stupendous at soccer. I like the way you play; you’re like the complete opposite of how I play soccer - I try to speed blitz and you use your technique. It’s a fun challenge to play soccer against you, and you’re a leader on the field. It’s also really fun talking with you because you always have something interesting to talk about. You are really funny, I like your jokes. You are a kind and helpful person, and it’s just so cool to see you at work. You’re super smart, one of the smartest in our group, and you’re also really talented. You’re so amazingly great at drawing. I like your style of art. You’re one of those people who gets back up again, no matter how many times they are hurt.

2024-2025

You are hardworking in writing, goals, math, chemistry, Shakespeare, literally everything. You are kind to everybody in every sport and in every subject no matter what it is. If anyone is ever stumped with something then you will help them. You always think positive when negative things are happening. During our mock election you were the president for our party. The American Equalists. You were committed and when one of us made a mistake, you didn’t criticize us, you just told us what to do next time. You are kind and hardworking. I remember in Violet I didn’t really want to play soccer because I knew I wouldn’t do well, and you said, “Ok but I know you can,” and I played that day and we won. You are kind by helping me and giving me support. Also you never cheat and are never unfair. These are things that stand out about you.

Keegan Johnson

Seven Years at PS1

Ever since my first day at school, PS1 has always made learning fun, no matter what we were learning or what time of day it was I’ve always been ecstatic. Even when dissecting a sheep’s brain or cow eye, and making baking soda rockets, getting an opportunity to have this type of hands-on learning not only made it more exciting but easier to learn too. School became even better when our teachers started calling on students to explain something new in class if they learned it at their own leisure, allowing students to be teachers for a little bit. Thanks to my time here I’ve gained confidence. I feel better asking questions, which monumentally boosted my overall understanding of every subject to fly way past my self inhibited limitations. Before, I used to always try and figure out a way on how to avoid talking on stage or just being on stage in general, but I’ve changed extraordinarily. Surprising even myself, I played Julius Caesar last year and Lysander this year, and while being up on stage I had not even a hint of stage fright in the moment. The community at PS1 gave me a sense of comfort knowing that I would be supported all the way, which helped me get more in character on stage. PS1 has been a great experience that has carved out an image for who I am as a person, and I’m sure wherever I choose to go it’ll be the right thing for me.

Words from Kelli and Tyler Johnson:

Keegan Jamison Johnson,

It feels like just yesterday we were bringing you home from the hospital in your newborn outfit—already too small for you—your eyes wide with wonder at the world around you. From the very beginning, you’ve been extraordinary. I still remember reading your favorite bedtime story and pausing at the words that seemed written just for you:

“On the night you were born, the moon smiled with such wonder that the stars peeked in to see you, and the night wind whispered, ‘Life will never be the same.’ Because there had never been anyone like you… ever in the world.”

Life has definitely never been the same.

We are so impressed with your curiosity and inquisitive nature. You ask questions that make us think, that make us smile, that stump us—and that remind us how beautifully your mind works. Your smile—when you let it come out—is absolutely contagious. And oh, how we love hearing you sing in the shower. It’s one of those little moments that always puts a smile on our faces and reminds us how much joy you carry inside you.

We are so proud of the person you are becoming—kind, thoughtful, funny, determined, and a deep thinker. Watching you grow has been one of the greatest joys of our lives.

On your first day at PS1, we stood across the street watching the bubbles emerge, your backpack almost bigger than you. And now, here you are—graduating and standing on the edge of a brand-new adventure. You’ve learned to read, to write, to solve problems, and to ask big questions. But more importantly, you’ve learned how to be a good friend, how to bounce back from life’s obstacles, and how to keep going even when things are tough. These are the lessons that will carry you far beyond the classroom.

As you move forward into middle school, know that we are endlessly proud of you—not just for what you’ve accomplished, but for who you are. Keep being curious. Keep being kind. Keep being you.

Congratulations, my sweet boy. We love you more than words can say. This is just the beginning of your incredible journey.

With all our hearts, Mom and Dad

Words from the staff:

Keegan is a person of depth, with expansive knowledge, particularly in science, nature, and current events. His ability to grasp complex ideas and draw insightful, sometimes philosophical, often left both peers and teachers amazed. Whether discussing the moral of a story that others might miss, or offering thoughtful commentary on global issues, Keegan has always invited us to think more deeply.

His intelligence isn’t limited to facts and figures—it’s matched by emotional maturity and a remarkable inner world. Though often reserved in large groups, when Keegan speaks, people listen. Because when he does share, it’s with clarity, empathy, and insight well beyond his years. More than one teacher has described him as the “Yoda” of the class—a quiet sage with wisdom waiting to be unlocked by the right question.

There’s also a beautifully creative side to Keegan—a storyteller, a thinker, someone who sees the world just a little differently. His imagination runs deep, and his ideas are often so specific, so rich, and at times so “meta” that they give those around him something new to consider. He doesn’t follow a script—he creates his own. He leads through timing, empathy, and initiative—often stepping up at just the right moment to help his group or support a peer.

Keegan, your unique way of seeing the world, your intellect, your kindness, and your quiet strength have been a gift to this community. You leave behind a legacy not just of knowledge, but of wisdom, integrity, and imagination.

2018-2019

Words from friends:

You have a nice voice. When we play tag, you give us advice on where to hide. We play hide and seek together, and when we show you good hiding spots, you says thanks. You are silly. Keegan, you are brave. I saw you get hurt and then you didn’t cry, you got up and kept playing. I saw you playing tag and noticed that you were being gentle. You are really funny when you tell Knock Knock jokes.

2021-2022

You are so playful at recess. I love playing handball with you. It’s always a fun time. You have such creative ideas and always make us laugh. I used to sit next to you at lunch. When you forgot a utensil for your food, you figured out how to eat your food in a very different way. Keegan you always have a reasoning behind what you do. Sometimes I ask, “why are you doing that thing?” Right away, you have an in-depth reason behind and I think, “oh. Now I see.”

2019-2020

You are a good table partner who helps me during writing time. You are really funny and we like to do jokes together.” Why didn’t the seagull fly over the bay? It didn’t want to be a bagel.” I like to play basketball with you because you have good defense. I like to play soccer with you because you don’t get tired.

2022-2023

2023-2024

Thank you for giving me a good perspective of everything I say. You are very funny and hard working but I can’t believe you don’t like mango. You’re so helpful and always have a chill mind set. You also take memorizing Shakespeare seriously. You are good at puzzles and solving things. I remember last year whenever I talked to you, you always gave me the best facts, and you still do, You also ask me mind bending questions. You are sweet and kind, you are really good at everything and you’re really really smart. You always listen to other people when they are talking to you.

2020-2021

You are a funny classmate and always have jokes for us. You are a great builder and I enjoy making stuff with you. You are a respectful listener and consider others’ ideas. You are inclusive and play fairly during recess. You are so brave and confident when asking tough questions. You make sure we follow the rules of the class and keep us in the right direction.

You are super smart! Whenever we turn and talk, you are so ready to jump in and share more about what we’re learning. I’ve been in class with you every year since Youngers. You have a great sense of humor. You make me laugh during lunchtime conversations all the time. I love sitting with you. You are so focused when teachers give directions. I know that if I or any classmates forget instructions, you always know what to do! You are so determined. Whenever I see you play soccer, you’re focused on helping your teammates win. If you don’t, you help your teammates feel calm.2

2024-2025

You are so smart—like seriously, smarter than someone who graduated college twice and teaches the teachers. You always have the answers and can explain them better than Google. You’re helpful with math, amazing in science, and super specific when you answer questions, even if no one understands what you’re saying! You’re chill, thoughtful, and kind, always checking in on people when their feelings are hurt. You’re also hilarious, always cracking jokes and making lunch so fun. I love being on your team in basketball or kickball because you try your best no matter what and your defense is great—even if it’s not the team you wanted, you always play hard and with so much skill. You’re a great friend, open-minded, joyful, and fun to be around.

Eleanor Frances Kemp

Seven Years at PS1

Have you ever stopped to think about the structure of a book? My time at PS1 is like a book in many ways. The introduction to my story starts with yellow, my first year getting to know new friends and learning about writing. The rising action was in bridge. I finally got to climb the stairs up to my new class, and in history I learned about changemakers like Harriet Tubman who fought for justice.

And then Covid I mean the climax. We all had to get through it somehow, but then when I heard of “online school” I was not having it. If you were on the class calls you would never see me because I disliked the idea of school without being near my friends. Then it’s another challenge, when I was in Middles. I had the worst handwriting, even my teacher couldn’t decipher it.

Then comes the falling action, the falling action is when the characters reflect on the climax and tie up loose ends before the story concludes. I came down the stairs ready for Olders 4. I made new friends and fell into a river on a hike. I was so relieved that Shakespeare wasn’t a total nightmare.

And finally after all of that comes the resolution, when the story ends. In 6th grade Olders 4 got renamed to “East Oak?” Then I realized that the ISEE was the real nightmare. I was an actor for Macbeth and I had so much fun on the camping trip with my grad besties! Then the last sentence to end it all off, Goodbye PS1, hello Windward!

Words from Beth and Chris Kemp:

Dear Eleanor, Congratulations on your seven years of PS1!!! You’re a graduate now, and we are in absolute awe of you.

You are such a kind and caring person, you pay attention to others, how they are, and what they need, and you do something about it. You are so much fun to be around–singing, creating, playing games, and delighting in sweets. Your sense of humor is timely and off the wall, and often ends up in uncontrollable fits of laughter.

You come up with many fun ideas, such as making fruit strips, rearranging and painting your room, crocheting, collecting Pokémon cards, hanging a cup from your ceiling over your bunk bed to catch ping-pong balls, and digital design, and we are in constant amazement at your ingenuity. You have a sharp aesthetic sense.

Your physical agility knows no bounds. You do all kinds of handstands, headstands, upside down, one-handed, jumps, rolls, demanding contortions, etc. When you set your mind to it, you give yourself physical challenges and exceed them— from the climbing rope at Clover Park to the rock wall on the Grad Trip.

You began your educational journey at Blue Oak Creative Schoolhouse, climbing the geodome all the time and doing perilous tricks on it with ease. Having fun with all kinds of slime (which you still love!) and working with clay, water, sand, and paint. You studied your image in a mirror when you discovered your love of face painting and got pretty messy. You always liked lollipops on the way home from school.

Then, at PS1 you went from Yellow to East Oak in seven very fast years. You continued to develop your confidence and style. You are a voracious reader preferring fictional stories about strong, independent and intelligent main characters who pursue the truth and what is right vs. taking the easy path. You’ve grown into being a mathematician and already have an aptitude for languages. We think you’ll like the team sports that await you in middle school.

We are so proud of the person you’ve become. You always have a good and kind-natured attitude towards others. You invite friends into your life and share your happiness, ideas, and joy with them. You are fair and respect others. You are creative, determined, meticulous, and thoughtful. You are simply so much fun to be with. We know that these faculties will serve you well at your new school. Many new friends and experiences await you, and we know you’ll continue the friendships you’ve made at PS1. You have accomplished a great deal at PS1, and you are ready for a new beginning. Our hearts are always with you, and we are always here to support you.

We love you, are so very proud of you, and wish you the absolute best going forward!

Love always, ♥ Dad, Mom, and Fred

Words from the staff:

Eleanor’s creativity, fun, and individuality have left an indelible mark on PS1. Eleanor has had a unique ability to turn everyday moments into imaginative experiences, whether animating a cartoon about camping, or writing to-do lists on her desk in expo marker in Green class, or creating her series of “Demons in the Deep” and drawing figures all around class as a scavenger hunt to find all the pieces of Elle.

Eleanor has a natural gift for building community and bringing others together. Whether it’s inviting classmates into creative projects like her recent story-publishing venture “Elle, Inc.” or organizing inclusive games at recess, she creates spaces where everyone feels seen and valued. Eleanor surprised her entire class with handmade name bracelets and regularly showed up with thoughtful morning meeting prompts that fostered connection among her classmates.

Academically, Eleanor engages deeply with topics that spark her interest—especially history, civics, and writing—contributing insightful ideas to class discussions and projects. Eleanor’s passion for learning is deeply connected to her strong sense of fairness, inclusivity, and care for those around her. Eleanor engages deeply in conversations around equity and identity, and she’s quick to notice language or behaviors that don’t align with those values.

Eleanor, you are uniquely you, and that is what we love and cherish about you. You have made our days richer and brighter and we can’t wait to see what you do next!

Alexa Koo

Seven Years at PS1

Today is a big day for me. It’s the end of my elementary school journey and marks the beginning of a new adventure. As I celebrate my graduation, it’s finally time to look back on everything that has happened, how far I’ve come, and how much I have grown.

When I look back on these years, I remember so much more than just homework, tests, and field trips. I remember my journey of growth and the good times with friends. Some that I never could have predicted when I first walked into this school. I was younger then, and I thought I had all the time in the world to grow up and graduate. But now, standing here today, I realize how much I’ve learned, not just about the world and problems around me, but about myself.

I remember when I first came to school, I was shy, and I questioned whether I could do the things I was being asked to do. But over time, through every challenge, I grew. I realized that being shy wasn’t a weakness—it was a part of the process. Each time I faced something new, I took small steps forward, and slowly, I started to understand that growth doesn’t happen all at once. It happens in the moments when I decide to keep on trying.

I’ve learned to believe in myself, even when things are tough. I’ve learned that it’s okay to make mistakes because they’re part of the journey, not something to fear. I’ve learned that failure isn’t the end; it’s just another chance to try again, but with more determination and knowledge.

I would like to thank the people who got me here. To all the teachers who believed in me, no matter what, and helped me bring my crazy ideas to life. All of my classmates and friends who helped me as a partner or to keep me company during recess. And to my parents who helped me through all of my time here, whether it was about a small scratch or how frustrated I was because of my homework. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.

Words from Annie Lee and Lin Koo:

Dearest Alex,

To our graduate, from tears to conquering fears, you did it! We are in wonder and awe of YOU. Through your lens and your journey, you’ve taught us the feeling of uncertainty and being uncomfortable is BRAVE. That means we are walking a path that is pushing the envelope and exploring new things. Onwards as you are – kind, curious, and our baddie bear for life. Onto the next adventure.

Love, Mom, Dad, David, and Zoeymama

Words from the staff:

Alex is driven by a genuine passion for growth and a determination to do her best every day. From expertly managing Zoom calls during distance learning to eagerly seeking feedback to improve her work, Alex has shown us all what it means to be a hard worker with a growth mindset. She approaches challenges with curiosity and confidence, especially in STEM subjects, where her quick grasp of new concepts and enthusiasm inspire those around her.

Alex’s character shines brightly in the way she treats others. She leads with kindness, making everyone feel seen, welcome, and valued. Younger students look up to her, and her warm greetings and positive presence light up our campus. Alex has a special way of making people feel like they belong, which comes from her integrity, care, and quiet strength. She brings people together through her kindness and consistency. Her willingness to help others and contribute thoughtfully to group work shows the depth of her compassion.

Her creativity adds even more vibrancy to her school life. Whether it’s through her beautiful drawings or her storytelling, Alex brings joy, insight, and laughter to those lucky enough to know her. Teachers and friends treasure the sweet, comic-style notes she leaves behind—mini characters that both entertain and teach. Her artistic talents reveal a unique perspective and a thoughtful heart.

Alex, your dedication, creativity, and kindness have made a difference in our community, and there is no doubt you will continue to inspire and excel in everything you pursue.

You know how to make others smile with your sweetness.

You are always kind. You are really thoughtful. When people don’t have a snack, you share with them - even your yummy waffles. You are so focused on whatever we’re doing. Whenever you see someone is distracted or confused, you help them figure out what to do. You are so creative. When you were in my Santa Monica Pier group, you had so many ideas for eco-friendly. You also made these lily pads that really made our whole pier so beautiful! You are also active outside the class, too. You always join in PE, especially volleyball.

2024-2025

YOU’RE A RAINBOW CHICKEN UNICORNNNNNNNNN.

When I first met you, I knew I wanted to be friends. You are so kind to everyone you see. You are a great person and a great friend. Anyone could be friends with you. From the moment I started PS1 you have been so kind and inclusive and now I can’t even imagine a life that doesn’t have you in it. You are literally the best. You have been such a phenomenal leader. Your creativity, happiness, and Intelligence really shape you into who you are- a true gem. I remember when you made me laugh when you were making owl sounds. I love the 10 out of 10 sarcasm. You’re always so energetic (besides when it’s the morning), but you always bounce back. Alex, You are super smart. Finally, Dearest Koo, wow, the sarcastic bag of fun is leaving and I will miss you.

Pluralistic School One is the place we go every day Each Olders class bands together and puts on a play. From before I was young and after today the play’s a tradition, the students will say. From our teachers we learn how to act the play is great and that is a fact. The play creates bonds, which is a way that we build trust each and every day. Trust builds friendships which makes school fun, extra fun in math, extra fun in writing, all of the fun makes our school extra exciting

Our friends join us from class to class and now we remember when we played on the grass. On the grass under the trees we are all free. Screaming for joy, shouting in fun, these are some of the things that were done, by children old by children new, by people like me by people like you. All of this is still awesome to do. So before you leave this school play in the grass the grass we have played on in

Specialists teach us special things And everyone knows the joy that it brings There used to be five now there are six Spanish with Gaby is now in the mix Library is awesome, we read with Cristina It is as amazing as the stuff we do with Lina. In music with Carissa we all sing free, don’t forget PE everyone loves Pedro, especially me. When we have Studio with Chris, we know that we will have fun, We make robots and shoes; We are amazed— it can be done!

We act, we play, we do specialists. From yellow to now I’ve had lots of fun But now my journey at PS1 is done. All of the friends, the teachers, and staff have led me down this magnificent path. I am sad that I have to go I will miss all of you, that’s something you should know.

Words from Jaime and Keith Muenze:

A Tribute to Leon Celebrating a Mindful, Musical, and Meaningful Graduate

Today we celebrate Leon—not just for completing 6th grade, but for the remarkable young person he already is.

Leon, you love to learn. Whether it’s solving math problems or diving into new ideas, you approach knowledge with curiosity and focus. You don’t just want answers—you want to understand the why, and that desire to go deeper makes you a true scholar.

Your gifts go far beyond the classroom. You are insightful and thoughtful, always noticing what others might miss. You ask big questions, you reflect, and you share your thinking with a quiet confidence that draws others in.

What stands out most, though, is your heart. You are caring. You include others. You make space for people to feel seen, heard, and valued. In a world that often celebrates loudness, you lead with kindness—and that is powerful.

You’ve worked hard to get here. You’ve balanced your love of math with your love for the arts. You sing with a voice that lights up a room. You play guitar with soul. You draw with attention to detail and imagination. Whether it’s through music, pencil, or ideas, you express yourself fully and fearlessly.

You are a rare blend—both disciplined and creative, logical and emotional. And it’s that balance, Leon, that makes you so special.

As you move into middle school, carry that balance with you. Keep learning. Keep caring. Keep creating. The world needs more people like you—people who work hard, think deeply, and love generously.

We are so proud of you. We see who you are becoming, and we believe in everything you have yet to do.

Congratulations, Leon. This is just the beginning.

Words from the staff:

From the moment Leon walked onto campus with his signature style—whether a jacket adorned with feathers, leather gloves and sunglasses, or a well-polished suit—he reminded us what it means to be unapologetically yourself. Leon is truly an authentic child—never conforming to others and just always himself. His creativity knows no bounds. He is a true artist. He expresses his independent thoughts and shows the need to do things differently. Leon is someone who can’t be categorized—he’s like the ambassador of Olders.

Leon is just as devoted to his illustrations, guitar playing, and encyclopedic knowledge of rock lyrics as he is to his academic journey—one shaped by determination and a strong growth mindset. He doesn’t shy away from challenges; instead, he identifies areas for growth and works hard to improve—whether in writing, public speaking, or basketball. In third-grade he was so committed to finishing a story that he spent his lunch breaks working on it. In Olders, he’s continued that focus, devouring novels in student-led book clubs and diving into thoughtful discussions.

Leon serves on the Student Leadership Club, supports his peers, and has an uncanny ability to connect with everyone, especially those who walk their own unique paths. We were thrilled to see Leon want to take a bit of everyone with him by signing his sneakers at the end of the year in a celebration of community.

Leon, you are warm, inclusive, and a natural community builder. Your positive, uplifting presence has inspired PS1 and we know that you will continue to make your mark in your future communities.

2018-2019

2019-2020

You are so friendly and funny. You always say please and thank you and have good manners. You always say hello to people when they come to the school. You are a cool dude. We jump on trampolines together. You’re just COOL. I like your style. You taught me how to make origami. I always have fun with you.

You are a really flexible person. You always say “sure. Okay.” even when the directions change, and they change quickly. Leon, you are a really fun person to play with. You are great at games. You are a great artist. A Lot of times during goals, I’ll walk pass you to get supplies and I notice how carefully you are working on your art goal, which usually changes each day. You are so good at beatboxing. I heard you for the first time and it’s AMAZING how you can make the sounds of an instrument. It’s pretty entertaining. You are so funny. You’re a great storyteller with good ideas.

You’re really good at art and easy to talk to. I think that your drawings really represent who you are as a person, and are quite imaginative, too! I love how you express yourself in different ways. You are very good at mathematics. You are a great friend to me and many others, too. You are very trustworthy, you are funny (sometimes), and you work really hard on every project. You listen to everything the teachers say so when we work on a project you know what to do. I remember when you and I did the Harlem Renaissance bingo game. You are an amazing friend and you always help your friends out, so I’m glad to be one. I love how you are so outgoing in everything you do.

2022-2023

2020-2021

You are really good at drawing 3D and you are fun to play tag with. You make me feel like an artist. You are a good artist and make your pictures very colorful. Leon I like your comics. I love when you fold origami it looks so cool ♥. I like the way you can make up awesome characters really quickly. Your hair is cool. We have a lot in common. I enjoy looking at your drawings, they are so detailed. You’re nice and funny, and you found a new way to carbonate water. (Just leave it in the sun!)

You are an amazing artist. Your creativity is insane. I liked when you showed us how to make perspective drawings. You are so funny at recess like when you do crazy trickshots while playing basketball. You are never hurt, like the time you had a big bump on your leg and you stuck it with a pencil and said it didn’t hurt. I appreciate how you are always there to help someone in need. Thank you for being my friend and always having a good song to sing.

2024-2025

You are really good at shading and drawing perspective. Again and again you inspire me when I draw. You’re SO talented at singing, and you’re never shy to bring out that inner MARIAH CAREY! You are supportive and open minded when someone else has an idea about something. A good memory I have with you was when we were in the same political party group. It was really fun to have you as president. You are a great basketball player and a great student, but most of all you are SUCH a great friend. I almost always see you trading Pokémon cards and everyone wants to trade with you because of how nice and fair you are. You are so nice and are willing to help anybody if they’re hurt, sad, or mad you will cool them down.

Seven Years at PS1

My poem called “Scared” sums up my experience at PS1…

Scared

It’s hard to believe this year’s the last, PS1 has helped me in my past.

Middle school sounds really cool, but also kind of like a giant school!

What if I get lost or don’t figure out my class? Or drop my books while other people pass?

What if my PS1 friendships end? How will I make new friends?

Elementary school is done, and as I journey into middle school, I wanted to thank everyone for the fun.

When I started PS1 seven years ago, I was scared. But now I know, being scared was just the start. I will be scared a lot in my life. From middle school tours, to interviews, to going on the Olders retreat, PS1 has taught me not to be scared. For example, while on the retreat, we did the Leap of Faith. I was scared to jump from that height, but with encouragement from my friends, I jumped. Jumping helped me realize that with support, I can overcome my fears. This is just one example of what PS1 taught me. Over the years at PS1, the teachers helped me be respectful, collaborative, to be a problem solver, proactive, be prepared, and to be self-aware. All of these things are going to help me on my journey at New West Middle School. Thank you, PS1, I will miss you!

Words from Amber and BJ Ojuri:

Dear Adelola,

You may be the middle child, But your light shines just as bright You’re never overlooked, You’re a star in your own right.

A caring big sister, And a thoughtful little one too, You lift others up, In all that you do.

To us, your parents, You’re honest and kind, A heart full of love And a bright, curious mind.

Whether it’s Math, Writing, Cheer or Volleyball, You give it your best You always give it your all.

You set your own standards, You aim high and stay true, And because of your drive, We believe so much in you.

Remember this always You’re beautiful, talented, smart, and strong, We trust you because you’ve always known right from wrong.

So don’t be too hard on yourself, You’re already enough. Life has its challenges, But you’re made of tough stuff.

We know you’ll go far, Wherever you roam With love and support, You’ll always have home.

So proud of you, Lola! We’re cheering you on. The world’s waiting for you

And we can’t wait to see what you’ll become.

Words from the staff:

Lola’s calm presence is rooted in a deep inner strength. She approaches every challenge with persistence and resilience, finding new layers of strength when needed. Beneath her sweet and kind demeanor bubbles a bravery and fierceness that shine through her daily commitment to personal growth. Her math notes could be published and her presentation at a staff meeting on Olders’ book clubs remind us all that true strength is found in unyielding effort.

Lola perseveres and is deeply compassionate. She radiates kindness in every way she interacts with others, whether helping her sister Iva to get a turn in the cooking class, welcoming new classmates, or including younger friends in play. Lola’s thoughtful nature brings warmth and care to our community. She has a unique ability to make everyone feel valued and supported, showing us what it means to be truly inclusive.

Though she doesn’t often seek the spotlight, Lola leads with intention and action. She quietly steps up, bringing organization, purpose, and care to every group project. Her leadership was clear when she volunteered to create a video about the happenings in the library, involving many classmates and working diligently to see it through. Her thoughtful approach motivates others and quietly guides her peers to success.

Lola, you balance all of this with a joyful and creative spirit. Whether you are immersed in your artwork or dominating a game of four-square, your playful energy lifts others. Your creativity and joy remind us that learning and growing are also about having fun and sharing happiness with others.

2018-2019

Words from friends:

You know a lot about math. You are very good at numbers and writing your number scroll. You also know all about PS1! You are kind because you play on the structure with me during recess. During dramatic play, you play imaginative games with me. You are a great community member. You pick up trash whenever you see it on the ground.

2021-2022

2023-2024

You are a flexible and trustworthy friend. You brighten everyone’s day because of your caring heart. You notice when other kids are hurt and find a way to help them. You are so kind and don’t get mad so quickly. You are a curious learner and are open to learning new things. I can depend on you because you are a willing helper. You are a creative artist and can make any craft unique.

2019-2020

I love your drawings! I love when we play together. It is so fun to play in drama with you. You are kind to everyone. You are a good friend to me. You always work well with your friends. I love when we get to read together. You write really cool stories!

2022-2023

2020-2021

You are so helpful and caring to your classmates especially when they are in need. You offer great advice to others. You know how to comfort those who are feeling down. You laugh at others’ jokes even if they are not funny so the person feels good about themselves. You are a close friend to me just like a sister. You are so polite and kind-hearted in every way.

You are amazingly respectful. During transitions, you model what it looks like to transition into a quiet space and ask others kindly to model this, too, when they’re distracted. You persevere when problems are challenging. We’re in a math group together, and you always come up with creative ways to solve problems and take my ideas, too! During the wave investigation, you used so many different materials, and put them together, to make different types of paddles. You collaborate with everyone! You share your ideas, but listen to other’s ideas, too!2023-2024

You might seem super shy, and you are sometimes, but you’re super bubbly when someone really gets to know you. Ever since Youngers we have been friends over how to draw a star, but even now we bond over silly dances, weird handshakes, and weird food combos. You’re super confident and you’re always taking on a challenge and trying something new. You’re always putting your thoughts and ideas into group projects, which makes them awesome. You’re so curious during math and you ask if you don’t understand, which inspires me. You’re as smart as you are curious. You’re a kind, respectful, and trustworthy person. Thank you for being my friend.

2024-2025

You are always so fun to talk to and never fail to entertain me. I remember this one time during library, there was a wasp flying around, so we had to go to the community room, and you and I couldn’t help but burst into laughter. MY SHAYLA, I remember in green when we had the music singing group, it was hectic but so much fun being in class with you. I really admire your bravery and creativity. You also always make sure people are feeling good. You are an awesome partner. I especially appreciated when we were together and you helped me with my social studies work. I have loved having you in my class. Lola, you’re so sweet (and you know it). I hope I don’t bring your sour gummy bear side out (hehe). But for real, you are so sweet, kind, and the greatest friend.

Remi Schwarz

Seven Years at PS1

What we call the end is often the beginning. And today is the end of my PS1 journey. Although it’s taking me a while to get here I’m finally here. As I look back on the first day I was scared, nervous and unsure of what was going to happen, but as I stand here today I’m confident and capable and ready for what’s next. This school year has flown by, faster than I ever imagined, and I’m not ready for it to end but here I am today graduating. Every single challenge, every memory, and every laugh has shaped me into who I am today. It’s impossible to forget the moments that made this year one to hold on to forever. Those moments that gave me strength, built friendships, and taught me so much more than I could have ever learned from a book

All those ups and downs taught me to never give up and even if it’s scary you keep going. If it wasn’t for all my friends I wouldn’t be up here reciting this speech and I wouldn’t have all these great memories, and all these great moments.

And cheers to all my great teachers who never let me give up and challenged me from the start to the end and of course thank you to my family for always being there for me and always believing in me. Rowan and Dylan, whether it was to laugh with me or just to listen, you made this journey much more meaningful and I couldn’t have done it without you. I love you both more than words can say. Finally thank you to my mom and dad for making this journey possible and for always supporting me along the way. I could not be where I am today without you guys. I love you guys.

And now, as we turn the page and step into whatever comes next, I just want to say this and tell everyone that I’m proud—not just of what I’ve done, but of who I’ve become. That’s because of the people who believed in me and stood by me, and reminded me of my worth when I forgot. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. Thank you.

Words from Jessica and Jason Schwarz:

Dear Remi,

We are so incredibly proud of you as you finish your final year at PS1. Watching you grow over these past years—into a curious learner, a hardworking student, and a deeply thoughtful friend—has been one of the greatest joys of our lives.

Whether diving into a new subject, lending a hand to a classmate, or pushing through a difficult moment, you’ve shown us the power of perseverance and kindness. Your accomplishments, big and small, are a reflection of your character and the values you live every day.

As you close this chapter and prepare to begin your journey at Archer, we hope you carry with you the confidence of all you’ve achieved and the excitement of all that lies ahead. There will be new adventures, new questions to ask, and new friendships to build—and we have no doubt you are ready for all of it.

We love you endlessly and are behind you always.

With all our pride and hearts full, Mom and Dad

Words from the staff:

Remi is a force to be reckoned with—bold, confident, and full of life. She is the student who can be seen bursting into a room with exuberance, throwing her arms around a teacher for a hug, or making one of her signature cheeky comments. One staff member characterised this component of her beautifully, “Remi is sassy and she knows it (and admits it)! She comes into the office and dominates the space with her vibrant energy and big smile. She demands what she wants with no shame, and I envy that about her. Remi’s confidence is unmatched!”

Remi balances this boldness with deep empathy. She is quick to notice when someone needs support and offers it with sincerity—whether through a kind word, a helping hand, or simply being present. Beneath her vibrant energy is a compassionate heart that cares deeply about others. 2018-2019

Words from friends:

I really like playing “Who Jumps Farther” at recess and then going to the library and reading The World Record Book. You always say, thank you when I give you things and you are polite and sometimes you let me go first. You are really fun to play tag with because when you are silly you run to the curly side and scream. You are out of this planet amazing and nice. I like when you share your fuse beads with me.

2020-2021

You are nice to everyone. You are very pretty inside and out! I feel like a soccer girl when you’re nearby. Remi I like the stuff that you make. I like that we both play the same exact game and we are together in table spots. I like getting to see you hang out with everyone. You were my first best friend in the world at PS1 I don’t know what I would do without you. I like that we are studio partners. You are good at tag, funny and also a good leader at your free choice Friday club last time. You are hard working and nice. I like the way you inspire me.

I love that you are so kind and that you are so funny. You are so helpful. You’re very kind, clever and open minded. I’m so glad that I was in the same class as you! You definitely are a character! You’re funny too. I love hanging out with you. You’re very productive and creative, you always have new ideas. I love working with you! I’ve known you since Youngers! You are one of the only people I’ve known that has been in my class since the day I started.

You are a great friend. When I’m having a bad day, you ask me if I’m okay and cheer me up with a joke. I got hit with a ball and was really surprised. You checked in with me right away. You have the biggest smile and it makes me feel really good! You are ready to jump into whatever we do during the day. In math, I see you trying out the problem right away when you whisper to yourself and you have such excitement. I notice you are such a collaborative group member. You come up with creative solutions to problems and listen to others. In our Pier group, you came up with the idea to create a tram that traveled around. It was great!

Whenever you face a challenge you never give up and always try your best. You are kind, dependable, loyal, and compassionate. You are truly an amazing friend, and have made me laugh more times than I can count. From dance battles to roast battles everything is so much fun with you. You taught me what a genuine friendship looks like and I’m so grateful for that.

Regan Shao

Seven Years at PS1

My first memory of PS1 was when I was in Red Class. We went to a cafe and had lemonade to celebrate publishing our books as authors. I felt extremely proud to have published my first book and having lemonade did not hurt either, because I really like lemonade. I remembered thinking to myself “This is school? I definitely am in the right place!”

This is what I love about PS1. A place where my accomplishments are celebrated and where I always feel proud of myself.

I also remember a time when I really wanted to learn cursive for my personal goal. My teachers gave me my own cursive workbook and I felt like I was like I was a VIP. I love that every goal, big or small, my teachers have always supported me.

More recently, I remember on the fifth grade camping trip, a few of us got separated from the class during a hike. We were way ahead of the group. The whole time I was anxious, because I thought we would get in trouble. But instead, our teacher was excited for us and wanted to hear more about our adventure. I was so relieved.

Looking back now, I realize that all my teachers have encouraged me to take little risks, and pushed and challenged me throughout my journey here at PS1. It makes me want to continue to push my own boundaries and not be afraid when I go to middle school. I am also so grateful for the PS1 community who has supported me the whole way. And of course my friends and family who have also helped me. Thank you, PS1!

Words from Hanna Shin and David Shao:

Regan,

It has been such fun, sometimes harrowing, but overall, a joyous ride watching you grow these past seven years here at PS1. With a big sister already there, you were confident walking into Red class on the first day of Kindergarten, barely waving goodbye to us. You were ready to take it all in.

Never one to conform, you take your own path proudly. Whether it be something creative, your personal style or taking on a new goal, you are confident, smart and persistent. We have seen you take on challenges, overcome obstacles and learn to advocate for yourself. We are so so proud to see you grow into a leader, mentor, and a good friend. And your joy of learning and curiosity is a gift that we know will stay with you in your journey in life.

You were and are always one step ahead... remember to slow down and enjoy the ride.

We love you so much! Mommy, Baba, Devon (aka “Onee”).

Words from the staff:

Regan approaches every challenge with organization, enthusiasm, and a willingness to go above and beyond. Whether taking charge in Student Leadership or quietly mentoring a peer, Regan shows a vision and drive that hint at great things to come. As one teacher said, “Someday, you will run the world—whether it be through owning your own company, political platform, or team.” Beneath her gentle and sweet presence lies a young person who knows how to set boundaries, stand up for herself, and think carefully before acting.

Academically, Regan is both curious and diligent. She takes her learning seriously, eagerly seeking feedback and striving to improve. Her habit of reviewing progress reports with pen in hand, asking thoughtful questions, and taking detailed notes shows a dedication few achieve. She balances strong academic skills with social reliability, making her a trusted friend and learner.

Regan’s joyful and friendly nature lights up any room. She builds strong, positive relationships with peers and adults alike, welcoming everyone with a smile—even when delivering difficult news. Her emotional intelligence adds depth to her connections, and her playful humor and warm attitude make her a beloved presence in the school community.

Regan’s creativity and intellectual depth shine through in everything she does. Whether reading stories aloud with expressive flair or exploring complex metaphors and life lessons, she brings imagination and introspection to her work.

Regan, you are kind, strategic, and clear-headed. PS1 has gratefully benefited from the thoughtful details you contribute to elevate our projects and enrich our learning and we look forward to the ways you continue to lend your skills to building a community of learners.

You’re a great athlete, and you’re better at basketball than me! You are really, really good at math - I think you are like a human calculator! You’re really smart and creative, and when we were working on the Han era poster, you were able to get everything together so we could complete the project. You are always positive and cheerful. I want to say a big thank you for being such an amazing friend. I hope we never lose connection with each other, and I hope to be besties till the end!

You always have good manners, and you are polite. You are mindful of how you treat other peers in the class. You never have anything harsh to say, even when you are reminding us of class guidelines. You are helpful when people are stuck. You are an inclusive friend, and you always include me. You are an advocate for racial equality. You are confident and comfortable talking to the teachers. You are so good at giving compliments to others.

You have a lot of empathy for your friends and classmates. If something happens, like say I tripped and fell over someone, you’d stop whatever you were doing to check on me and the other person. You are so inclusive. Even when people don’t ask, you invite them to play at recess if they look alone. You are thoughtful and always ask for consent. You were so helpful in redesigning the Euclid Play Structure. You had such creative ideas like adding a river and even a temple! You are such a great person to share a lunch table with because you’re so fun. You make me laugh every day!

2024-2025

You are persistent, you are talented and you are kind. When we do big projects in class like the National Narratives Project or the Election Process I always see you helping your group out. You always step up to help and you never stop working as hard as you can. You are smart and empathetic. When we were in the Cool Keys together for the mock election, you were such a good vice president. You helped everyone, you talked a certain way based on your audience, and you gave 110%. You always do your homework on time, and you are always so organized whenever you work. You share your opinion and always consider constructive criticism. You were SO dedicated to your role for Shakespeare, you memorized basically ALL of your lines in ONE day! You’re artistic and smart and funny and kind. It is amazing being in class with you because of all these things.

Kelly Sherman

Five Years at PS1

In second grade, my first year at PS1, I made this creature I called Rudolph the White Nosed Nothing. I think it represents my time at PS1 pretty well. For starters, the little twig legs represent me walking into PS1 on my first day, and much like twig legs they were very wobbly- a little scared and nervous. The blob, that somehow passed as it’s body, represents my goofy, silly, imagination that PS1 has helped me express. Like the time I created these characters called the Hillbillys on a field trip with Billy, Johnny, and Tommy. The head of the creature, that actually looks good, represents me when I graduated from PS1 because its been formed beautifully, much like how PS1 has helped shape me into who I am today.

Now there are a bunch of inspirational thoughts I could end my grad speech with like, “My time here at PS1 has been like a book, always open, with each chapter being a grade.” Or, it could be more like, “My life here at PS1 has been like a diving board, each step being a different grade and the edge of the board representing graduation- and that there’s no turning back; because of the random suburban dad forcing you to jump off.” But no. Mine is the one most suited for a silly goose like myself and it is this:

That when you’re just a blob of clay you’re bound to become a beautiful clay pot in the end, and that is what PS1 has done to me.

Words from Gina Kelly and Matt Sherman:

Dear Kelly,

Oh boy how we love you. It seems unnecessary to talk about how proud we are of you for finishing elementary school when we are proud of you every day. Proud of what a thoughtful, empathetic friend you are. Proud of what an effortless, endlessly creative mind you have. Proud that there has never been a more fun, patient or cool big brother, like, ever.

Not a night goes by when we don’t sit on the couch after you’ve gone to bed, when one of us asks, “Did you hear what Kelly said?” – or – “Did I tell you what Kelly did?” Then we trade stories of some hilarious joke you told, or cool piece of art you made, or truly original idea you shared, or bit of kindness you extended to someone. Every. Single. Night.

To us, PS1 is just as lucky to have experienced all you have to offer, as you are to have experienced its nurturing atmosphere and patient, engaged teachers who met you where you were, recognized what was special in you, and helped you grow in all sorts of ways. It was truly a mutually beneficial relationship, like the shark and the remora (you’re the shark in this metaphor, because sharks are cool, and so are you, and they never stop moving and neither do you).

You’re that kind of unique guy who needed a school like PS1 to push you and teach you in ways that worked for you; but PS1 needed you just as much, with your lightning-fast wit, your big dreams and of course your endless supply of rizz.

And now, on to middle school. You’re ready. You’re going to crush it. We can’t wait to see what awesome, creative, hilarious things you do next – and then talk about them every night after you go to bed.

We love you the most, bud.

–Mom, Dad, Shane & Milo

Words from the staff:

Kelly’s sense of humor is often the first thing people notice—a sharp wit combined with perfect comedic timing that lights up any room. He has a special talent for turning everyday moments into something funny and memorable. ‘Bring in the Shane’ became a beloved catchphrase the whole class would jokingly bring back throughout the year echoing your zoom call to have Shane help test the strength of your tower.

Kelly’s connection to nature runs deep. Whether collecting acorns with younger students or mastering leaf-whistling on a camping trip, he truly earned the title “Camper Extraordinaire.” His curiosity about the world and how things work fuels his love of science and exploration. Kelly is synonymous with nature and has an innate ability to climb anything, along with a deep desire to be of service to the greater community, loading and unloading buses and sweeping eating spaces, all because it makes the experience better for everyone.

Academically, Kelly approaches learning with curiosity and courage. From practicing Spanish vocabulary with ease to tackling complex themes in fantasy literature, he embraces challenges with enthusiasm. Ever curious, Kelly wants to know what else is out there, and sees his people as opportunities to help him learn and grow.

Kelly, your blend of humor, insight, and kindness leaves a lasting impact on all of us. We can’t wait to see where your curiosity and heart take you next.

You’re always filling the room with funny noises. I love your drawings and how you make us laugh with your funny jokes, especially the ones about potatoes.

Your humor level on the scale from one to ten might be an 11. You are so funny, you always put a smile on someone’s face. You always make it your priority to make people feel better when they are low. Every time we interact, it’s so fun and silly. It is so funny when you do your impression of things; it always makes me laugh. I thought it was funny when you made the hill billys group. Do you remember the table with me, you, Seb, and Alex- that was one of my favorite tables. I remember in Spanish how you insisted on being called Jeff, and the whole time, Gaby did not say Kelly, she said Jeff.

Inigo Smith

Two Years at PS1

PS1, a school that I have been at for just two years and will always have a special place in my heart. I feel like I have been here all of my life.

It was a change from what I was used to, Having both the fifth and sixth grade in one class. And I have had great teachers helping me through the years. In Olders, some of quite possibly the best teachers I’ve ever had.

Art with Lina and PE with Pedro, Studio with Chris and Music with Carissa, We also had Library with Christina and Spanish, the new edition, with Gaby. All great specialists who have given me such nice activities and projects to do, making shoes that you can use, or perhaps creating our very own song.

I got to see the new playground be constructed, and even got to hold up an “a.” We spelt “let’s play” and so we did. We still use the playground today all just laughing and playing.

People come and people go. Now it is my time to leave. I have made such great friends here. I will remember all of you and I hope that you all will remember me…Inigo Smith!

Words from the staff:

Inigo is a compassionate leader and true upstander. Whether he’s checking in on his younger brother, encouraging his peers, or stepping up through Student Leadership, he leads with empathy and a gentle but firm kindness that inspires those around him. As one teacher said, “You are the wrangler of your three younger siblings—with love. They look up to you because of your leadership strength and power of gentle care.” Inigo’s willingness to help and support others reflects a character grounded in genuine care.

But Inigo’s gifts don’t stop there. He is a curious thinker and lifelong learner, always exploring new ideas and making thoughtful connections across subjects. From his passion for history to amazing card tricks, and even his fluency in Spanish, Inigo approaches learning with enthusiasm and insight. His teachers marvel at his ability to think deeply and humorously about the world around him.

Inigo’s resilience and growth mindset have been equally impressive. He faces academic challenges with maturity and perseverance, never discouraged by setbacks. He actively seeks feedback and works hard to improve, showing a level of self-awareness and determination that is truly inspiring. Whether mastering spelling or building confidence in math, Inigo’s steady progress is a testament to his dedication.

Your warmth, joy, and humor combine with your commitment to learning to make you a hardworking student and a jovial friend who is well-loved by both peers and teachers. We are sure that your kindness and collaborative spirit will help create a welcoming community wherever you go.

You are so smart and you are such a nice person. Do you remember when your campaign party didn’t do so well, but you weren’t angry and you kept it chill. Not many people can pull that off. Also you are so nice, you are always willing to help somebody no matter who it is. You were such a good curator and exhibition team member in our National Narratives project, you helped us through some of the hardest times. You are funny, knowledgeable, and inspirational. You always look outside of the box for an amusing yet smart answer to problems that seem unsolvable. You look for hope and joy. You are funny, you are thoughtful, and you have just made this year even better. Thank you for lighting up our classroom this year.

Bowen Turner

Seven Years at PS1

Hi my name is Bowen Turner. I remember my first year of PS1, being intimidated by everyone and I barely spoke a word. Day after day, I started getting comfortable around PS1 students and I began making new friends. Eventually I started participating in sports games on the playground. When Covid hit, although I had to join zoom meetings, my family and I enjoyed staying in Idaho, traveling from place to place freely without a mask. However, nothing lasts forever, eventually the pandemic had to end and I went back to school for the last semester of second grade. I breezed through third grade, and it was fourth grade which meant I was one of the older kids on campus. In fifth grade Covid precautions had almost ended and I started learning new subjects and learning more about the ones I already knew. This included two of my favorite parts of the year, which were doing dissections in science which helped me learn about the animal bodies and performing Julius Caesar which helped me learn about William Shakespeare and Roman history. Finally, here I am now about to finish my final year and looking back on my seven years at PS1. I began as a student who barely spoke a word. Earlier this week I recited 25 lines as Oberon in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights’ Dream and I am here reciting this speech to you. Now I have a lot to say. At last I am ready to move on to my next chapter. The best thing I have learned during my years at PS1 is to be confident. Now I will carry this skill on with me to my next journey in middle school. Thank you.

Words from Laurel and BJ Turner:

Dear Bowen,

As we reflect on your remarkable journey at PS1, we picture the sweet, cherubic boy who started kindergarten with wideeyed curiosity. Those first few days, you came home and shared how you sat alone on a bench during recess, quietly observing the games and dynamics on the yard. You took your time, thoughtfully deciding where you wanted to join in, a testament to your patient, observant nature.

As you grew comfortable, you blossomed into an exceptional student, a trusted partner, and a cherished friend. Your teacher, Bonnie, shared how you respectfully considered other children’s ideas, even when you knew they might not work. At such a young age, you’d say, “After we try your idea, let’s do this,”patiently waiting with wisdom beyond your years. This blend of independence and empathy has defined your time at PS1. You’ve become a valued member of the community while confidently paving your own Path.

Your observant eye misses nothing. Christina noticed how she could gauge a moment’s impact by watching your expressive eyes. You embody a quiet confidence and immense strength of character—a beautiful balance of capability, humility, and subtle, on-point humor. Your flawless recall of events and facts, especially your encyclopedic knowledge of sports history and statistics, never ceases to amaze us. You’re a true citizen of the world, embracing diverse cultures at school and through your travels.

Once hesitant on stage, you’ve transformed into a captivating Shakespeare performer, bringing Oberon to life with North Oak. Yet, you’ve stayed true to your core—your superpowers shine through, even as you maintain your disdain for singing on stage and a begrudging tolerance for camping(!). From the little boy observing the yard, you’ve grown into a leader in the classroom and on that very same yard, kicking homeruns in the grad game and eagerly racing to the field for recess or PE.

Watching you evolve at PS1 fills our hearts with joy and pride. Your journey reflects not just growth, but a deepening of the qualities that make you uniquely you. As you prepare for “Life Beyond PS1,” we know you’re more than ready — equipped with resilience, curiosity, and a spirit to navigate the next Chapter.

Bowen, you inspire us every day. We’re endlessly proud of the person you are and excited to see where your path leads. With all our love and admiration, we’ll always be your biggest fans.

Love, Mom and Dad

Words from the staff:

When Bowen speaks, every word carries intention and insight. Teachers and classmates alike notice the sharpness behind those bright eyes and admire how Bowen manages to say very few words and yet affect such a very clear stance on life. With the self-awareness that led to a personal goal of public speaking, Bowen has grown from quietly following lessons to confidently sharing his thoughtful perspectives.

Bowen approaches math and writing with both creativity and precision. He mastered complex math concepts with enthusiasm, delighting in exploring sports statistics through a mathematical lens. In writing, Bowen’s eagerness to add detail and feeling to his work shows his passion for learning and expression.

Bowen leads quietly but powerfully. His kindness, reliability, and awareness of others make him a trusted friend and role model. Bowen’s gentle spirit and steady work habits inspire younger students, and his thoughtful nature creates a supportive and welcoming environment. Whether through his daily rotation of Bowen Island shirts or his caring interactions, he brings heart and humor to the school community.

Bowen is an athlete with great character. His size and skill on the field are matched by his humility and teamwork. Always coachable and fair, Bowen approaches sports with joy and respect. He values solutions over conflict and is quick to bring smiles to recess play. His ability to balance competitiveness with kindness is something we all admire.

Bowen, your combination of insight, academic excellence, quiet leadership, and good sportsmanship makes you someone we are all proud to know.

Norman Valentin Thompson

Seven Years at PS1

I still remember my first day of school, just me and one of my friends from my old school, ready for a fresh start at my new one. At the time I was looking at the 2019 grads and to me they looked way too big to be in 6th grade, and I knew one day that was going to be me, and I didn’t know how fast that day would come. This was the start to a great new adventure.

Time flew by me like the weekend, and before I knew it, I was stuck at home for my whole year in Green Class. To me homeschool wasn’t as great as normal school, because I was still going to school but this time without the fun of my friends.

Middles - the year I made friends that would last the rest of my time at PS1. The last day of Middles seemed like a dream. Taking photos with friends I wouldn’t see for a long time, but also making new friends. Even I knew this was a special day, my last day of school before Olders.

And Olders, or what is now the Oaks. On my first day I thought this was going to be all homework and no fun, and boy was I wrong. I made friends, played games and did everything Olders had to offer - even the homework. So my last year here I did anything and everything I wanted to do, and I made more friends that I will never forget. Each day comes with new adventure and fun memories and I’m sad to see this go away.

So I guess this is bye, but not forever. I’ll come visit, and remember - that I’m your favorite grad.

Dear Norman,

Watching you grow into the remarkable young man you are today has been one of the greatest joys of our lives. Your time at PS1 has shaped you in profound ways, but what’s most powerful is how you have shaped the community around you—with your kindness, your quiet strength, and your unwavering sense of justice and empathy.

We are so proud of the many ways you’ve shown up in this world. You’ve never been afraid to be thoughtful, to listen deeply, to offer comfort, and to speak up when it matters most. Whether helping a classmate who felt left out, checking in on friends after an argument, or standing tall in your truth, you’ve consistently led with heart. That kind of leadership can’t be taught in a classroom—it comes from within.

You’ve carried your heritage with pride, sharing your culture with joy and intention. From making tamales with Nana to honoring loved ones through Día de los Muertos, you remind us all that our stories matter, that our ancestors live on in us, and that food, tradition, and family are powerful threads that bind us. Your presence at PS1 has been a gift—especially for the younger students who saw in you someone who reflected their own roots.

Norman, you’ve embraced learning with curiosity and resilience. Even when things felt hard—when your pencil couldn’t quite keep up with your ideas, or when you faced moments of self-doubt—you never gave up. You listened, you reflected, and you grew. We’ve watched you move from a quiet little boy who clung to us at drop-off to a confident graduate who walks with his head held high. That transformation wasn’t sudden—it was the result of many small brave steps, day after day.

Your younger siblings adore you, and we often see in their eyes just how much they look up to you. They feel safe because you are their big brother, and they feel loved because you show up for them with your full heart. That same care and protection you offer them is what you offer the world. It’s why your teachers, your friends, and every adult who’s been lucky enough to know you holds you in such high regard.

We are incredibly proud of you—not just for what you’ve achieved, but for who you are when no one’s watching. You are honest, thoughtful, deeply compassionate, and full of integrity. As you move on from PS1, know that you carry with you everything you need to thrive. And know this: we will always be here, cheering you on, believing in you, and loving you beyond measure.

Congratulations, Norman. You did it.

Words

Norman is a grounded, thoughtful, and quietly confident presence in our community—a student who exemplifies dedication, humility, and steady leadership. Over the years, we’ve watched Norman grow into a self-aware learner with a true growth mindset. Norman is not afraid to ask for help when needed, showing maturity and a strong desire to improve. He embraces feedback, applies himself with care and purpose, and has shown tremendous academic and emotional growth.

In math, Norman brings clarity and method to his thinking, often helping elevate class discussions with his thoughtful explanations. He’s a strong communicator—articulate, analytical, and insightful. In fact, one teacher described him as having “an innate ability to recognize his own strengths and areas for growth… a testament to his growth mindset.”

Norman’s kindness and humility are just as striking as his intellect. Whether passing the ball in basketball, helping a teammate, or guiding a tour as a Student Ambassador, Norman leads with compassion and connection. Sharing delicious guacamole from his lunches, creating new and wild ball games as recess, jumping up backwards onto the stage, Norman is that glue we all need to inspire us in both good and difficult times; when we need laughter, he delivers.

Norman, your impressive tape claws, bottle flips, and the legendary full-court basketball shot you sank in Youngers after a bet with a friend are unforgettable, as are you.

2018-2019

Words from friends:

You tell very silly jokes. You play with all your friends during recess, and you don’t get distracted in math. You are a good partner and a really good friend. You always help people out. Whenever I am bored and have nothing to do in aftercare, you always say, “Do you want to play Pokemon?” And we play. If someone is by themselves, you go and help them out. You never let people down. You always say, “I can include you in my game.” You are so cool and really good at soccer.

2021-2022

To our friend Nomar, I love your nickname. You are so hysterical. Remember the time in studio you messed up on bird house and almost glued my hand to the board? You are such a good kickball player and you are kind and inclusive and you will play anything with anyone. I like that you welcome me in PE because not a lot of other people do that because I’m really bad at kickball. Remember to look out of our secret language while playing kickball. You’re a good member of the homie squad.

2023-2024

You are really good at sports and you’re fun to be around. You make me laugh and you’re a great table mate. I will always remember how on Fridays you and your friends scream, I mean sing, “It’s Friday, Friday.” You’re so athletic and you’re great at soccer and Fortnite. You’re such a kind soul and you’re incredibly funny. You are also really supportive and respectful of everyone. You make everything more fun, and can’t go a millisecond without telling another joke. You are so smart, great at math, and you always get a top score on tests. Thank you for being such a great guy, super kind to everyone, and always cheering me up when I need it.

2019-2020

I like to play with you because you always play fair when we play rainbow ball. You help us make the game continue when people want to quit. You can build a great Marby Run Run. You help me with math when we are partners. You always listen to the teacher so we can get a puff ball in the jar. You are fun to return the hot bag with we always go fast!

2022-2023

You are so drippy. You are always focused on your beanie which makes everyone laugh. You are a top class soccer player and I love gaming with you. I think you are hilarious and you can always make people laugh when they are down. Thank you for sharing your chips and guac with methey are the best I’ve ever had. I appreciate how you always stick up for me. You’re the best friend ever!

2024-2025

2020-2021

You are a friend to everyone. You are amazing at all kinds of sports. I love playing tag with you. I like that you can keep being trusted, like a lot ♥♥. It’s good to see you, it’s been a while. You’re so nice. You are verrrrrry funny. You are a good friend, good at tag and sports. In soccer you score every goal. You make me ready for anything. You make class enjoyable! Norman you are excellent. I feel like a champion when you’re around.

Nomar, you are so funny and nice, whenever you walk into a room with your Doctor Duffin Shmurf’s grin, everyone goes silent, then we all break into laughter trying to breathe but laughing too hard. You are so good at sports. Everyone wants you on their team when we play kickball because you can always kick a home run and score our team some points. You make our lunchtimes so much better. When we were in the same book club you were dedicated and found ways to fit reading into your schedule so you wouldn’t let us down. You are a good person and have a great attitude. You put 100% into your work and don’t give up. You’re also really smart - I can see you always focusing on your work. I love being friends with you because I always know you have my back no matter what.

Hannah Zabinski

Seven Years at PS1

Today is the day that I graduate, one of the biggest days of my life. I remember when I was a shy girl walking into my first classroom, learning how to read and make new friends. Now I am a confident girl who is standing behind this podium, giving the last speech of my PS1 journey.

I have learned so much from PS1. From exciting science experiments, like extracting DNA from a strawberry, which I never thought that I would do, or responding to interesting writing prompts in stories and essays. At PS1, we don’t only learn about things we can find in books and computers, but also what we find when we look inside ourselves. I have learned to always work hard, and step out of my comfort zone. One of the ways that I have changed as a student, is that when I started at PS1, I was afraid to perform at circle time, but now performing has brought me so much joy. For example, earlier this year when I played my piano piece on stage. I have learned to collaborate with classmates, participate in class discussions, and learn to be kind and respectful to my community.

There are so many memories and experiences that could never be replaced. Like moving up day, when we celebrate the completion of another year. We would always tell each other “See you next semester!” But this year is different. I won’t be seeing my friends and classmates everyday like I am used to. We will all go in separate directions and start a new chapter in our lives.

I am forever grateful for all my teachers who helped me grow as a student, and as a person. They taught me to be kind, curious, hard-working, and to never give up. I would not be the same confident girl that I am today if it weren’t for their support and encouragement. I’m also grateful for my family, for cheering me on and being there for me through everything, and all my friends who made my PS1 experience so fun and unforgettable. So, here’s to us, the graduates of 2025, ending one amazing journey, and starting another.

Words from Sharon Dai and Eric Zabinski:

Dear Hannah,

It’s truly hard to be around you and not smile. From the moment you entered our lives, you have radiated joy, warmth, and kindness. Your Chinese name, “Dai Zixi,” with “xi” meaning “sunshine,” could not be more fitting. You are a ray of sunshine—brightening every room you walk into and lifting the spirits of everyone around you.

We’ve watched with so much pride as you’ve grown into a girl full of passion, energy, and determination. Whether you’re dancing, playing piano, singing, swinging a tennis racquet or completing school work, you bring your whole heart to everything you do. We admire how you never back down from a challenge and that you bring joy to all of your efforts. And we are amazed at how you manage your busy schedule with such independence, without reminders from us. You truly are a self-starter, and your work ethic, dedication and commitment make us very proud.

But what stands out about you most may be your kind heart. You are thoughtful, caring, and deeply empathetic. You want the people around you to feel happy and supported. Your genuine, sweet nature draws people to you, and you have a way of making others feel safe, seen, and loved. You are a wonderful friend, a compassionate listener, and someone people trust.

We want you to know how proud we are of the person you are becoming. You are smart, strong, loving, and full of light. Watching you grow has been one of the greatest joys of our lives, and we can’t wait to see what your future holds. Whatever path you choose, we know you will walk it with kindness, courage, and that unmistakable sparkle of sunshine that is uniquely you.

With all our love, Mom and Dad

Words from the staff:

If you ever wonder what it looks like to truly appreciate every school day, just watch Hannah at the end of the day. No matter how full or tiring the day has been, she makes a point to thank her teachers before heading to carpool. Hannah’s deep gratitude and genuine joy for learning have been a bright light. She uplifts everyone around her through her respect, attentiveness, and the high standards she sets—not just for herself but for her classmates as well. Her kindness and humility reminds us all how special it is to be part of a community that learns and grows together.

Hannah’s love for school includes the friendships and fun, along with the challenge and the chance to dive into new ideas. Whether she’s designing something amazing in TinkerCad, singing in a performance, or illustrating her Personal Textbook with rendered illustrations, academic reflections, and specific work samples, Hannah gives her absolute best. Her work is thoughtful, detailed, and carefully crafted—a keepsake of her journey.

Hannah’s approach to math combines joy and mastery. She tackles each problem with methodical precision, showing every step along the way and leaving no stone unturned. She knows that understanding is more important than speed, and she always makes sure her work is clear and complete. Hannah brings her super powers and is calm, precise, and unstoppable.

Hannah, thank you for showing us what it means to love learning, to give your best in everything you do, and to lead with kindness and grace.
