Messages to the graduating class

North Island- Powell River MP Rachel Blaney
To the graduating class of 2024, I offer you all my sincere congratulations. As you enter this new chapter in your lives, you should be immensely proud of all that you have accomplished, and I hope you take a moment to reflect on how far you have come.
During your time in school, you have overcome challenges, gained knowledge, skills and friendships, and possibly discovered what you are passionate about. If not, you will in time.
You have shown that you have the ability to succeed after high school through your dedication and sensibility. I hope you take what you’ve learned from the amazing people who supported you during your education and carry it forward.
Relish this time and be excited about your futures. As you move forward in your lives and begin to navigate the road ahead, I have no doubt you will continue to shine bright and that you will cultivate the future you choose.
Congratulations once again. There is a lot of uncertainty in the world; as you face this, think of the words of the first woman member of parliament in Canada, Angus McPhail: “Never apologize. Never explain. Just get the thing done and let them howl.”

qathet Regional District chair Clay Brander
On behalf of qathet Regional District, I would like to congratulate this year’s graduates. You have reached a significant milestone in your lives, a pivotal moment from which future events will be measured: pre-graduation and post-graduation.
For some, this marks a step on the educational ladder, while for others, it signifies the conclusion of formal education and the beginning of a career. Regardless of your path, this transition is crucial and should be approached with careful consideration. I urge you not to undervalue yourselves by hastily accepting the first opportunity that presents itself, whether for convenience or financial gain.
Take the time to thoughtfully contemplate your goals, skills and interests, as the choices you make now will likely influence the trajectory of your lives. Do not be afraid to change direction, it is never too late to try something new and I encourage you to branch out of your comfort zone as you might surprise yourself.
Remember, life is not solely about monetary gain or material possessions; it is about finding fulfillment and joy in what you do.
Congratulations on all your hard work and good luck in your futures. I know they will be bright and filled with incredible opportunities.
qathet School District board chair Jaclyn Miller
On behalf of the Board of Education for qathet School District, I extend heartfelt congratulations to each of you. Your hard work, perseverance and dedication have brought you to this significant milestone.
You’ve conquered the world of homework, exams and group projects—no small feat! You also navigated your high school journey during the challenges of COVID-19, demonstrating remarkable resilience and adaptability.

Your time in our schools has equipped you with not only academic knowledge but also the values of community, resilience and empathy. These qualities will serve you well in whatever path you choose.
So, as you step out into the world, remember to pack those essentials: your sense of humour, your curiosity, a snack and a good playlist.
We are immensely proud of your achievements and excited for the bright futures that lie ahead. Remember, you are always a part of the qathet School District community, and we will continue to cheer you on as you reach new heights.
Tla’amin Nation hegus John Hackett
Ah-jeh-chep-ut and greetings, Class of 2024. Congratulations to all the graduates, you all have reached a great and honourable milestone.

The future you are stepping into may feel uncertain at times - there are so many possible pathways to explore. By following your heart, living with passion and working hard, anything is possible. Discipline and hard work will allow you to reach many more milestones on your journey.
The world is a beautiful place if you stay true to yourself and your values.
Congratulations, Class of 2024.
Brooks Secondary School principal Jasmin Marshman
So here you are, now what? Well now it’s time for you to become unstoppable.
Whether you are jumping into something new with both feet or moving slowly at a measured pace, both are fine, just don’t stop moving forward.

Please don’t sit back and watch yourself live this life. Open the window, lean way out and yell out loud instructions to yourself to keep your butt in gear. Do not stay in your lane. If it does not serve you, then it is not for you. Change plans, keep pushing forward and do not give up. Don’t you dare ever give up because someone else thinks you don’t deserve it or aren’t good enough or it’s not your place. You are worthy and deserving of every opportunity you want to go for.
I hope you always remember that you are allowed to feel both brave and terrified at the same time when you are in the midst of change. And you are at that first big milestone of change right now.
We wish you all a safe and fun summer as you step into the unknown. We all here cheering for you.
City of Powell River mayor Ron Woznow
To the class of 2024, congratulations! You have demonstrated great resilience and dedication by continuing your studies through the COVID-19 pandemic.
This experience has given you a resilience to manage challenges as you navigate the next phase of your life. I hope that you will always remember that you are capable of overcoming difficult situations.

Your focus and commitment has also allowed you to be successful in many nonacademic endeavours, like the innovative fundraising you did with games like “senior assassin” and “secret tag.” These games built connections with fellow students that will last a lifetime.
Treasure the relationships that have helped you to get to where you are today –and be open to meeting new people as you embark on your next adventure. Your education has provided a strong foundation for whatever path you choose to follow. Now you get to choose the path, whether it is to continue your formal education or to learn while travelling the world or starting a job.
Enjoy your graduation; you have earned it! I wish you happiness and success in whatever path you choose to follow.

To the students, from a student
Graduate Elise English spoke directly to her fellow graduates from the stage set up in Hap Parker Arena on June 8.
Class of 2024, we all come together today for the final time to celebrate and recognize the many years of hard work and all the accomplishments and milestones we have achieved, together.
We have seen each other through our ups, downs, accomplishments, laughter, successes, and maybe even a few tears. And now it's crazy to believe it's our graduation. We have made it.
The countless things we have surpassed, conquered and completed together over the years of school will forever be memorable. From the elementary school slam-dunk tournament to getting our grade eight year shortened due to COVID, eating from lunch boxes and playing grounders at recess to sitting in the parking lot and making fun of each other for our impeccable driving skills.
We will be able to look back at these memories fondly. We will remember how we got through it together, and here we are, graduating.
Counting down the last few months, weeks and days, I think about how it flew by. We begin a new chapter of life today as we walk across this stage, then in three weeks we will say our final goodbyes to the cafeteria cheese buns, the overly crowded stairs, and most importantly, each other.

Even though with graduation we may be thrilled to never have to wake up early to walk through those halls again. Brooks Secondary School has given us each other; it has given us memories, friendships and experiences that we will carry with us for the rest of our lives.
Graduating comes with so much excitement and celebration but also stress and responsibility. We are now going off, becoming young adults and starting the new chapter of our lives, the start to becoming
To the parents, from a student
Graduate Madeleine Daniels-Pratt delivered the following message during Grad 2024 celebrations in early June.
As we stand here today, on the cusp of the end of our high school journey, we can’t help but feel a range of emotions. Excitement for what’s to come, apprehension about the future, and, of course, a deep sense of gratitude for the people who have supported us all the way through - our parents.
Parents, there are no words to express how much we appreciate everything you’ve done for us.
From the early mornings spent making us breakfast, to the late nights spent helping us with homework, to the countless hours spent cheering us on at sports games and performances, you’ve been there for us ev-

ery step of the way. And let’s be real, we haven’t always been easy to deal with.
From the tantrums we threw as toddlers to the eyerolls we gave you as teenagers, we know we’ve put you through the wringer. But through it all, you’ve loved us unconditionally, and for that we can never thank you enough. You’ve been our constant support system, our cheerleaders and our role models.
the person we have thought and dreamed about being since we were young.
The future is full of opportunities and the chance to be whomever we want to be. One day we'll look back at Brooks, at our childhood, and we will not remember that bad mark on our chemistry test or the grammar package we rushed to finish. But we will remember the fun bus trips with our teams, laughing till our stomachs hurt, and the great experiences we have had as teammates, classmates and peers.
We have our teachers, parents, coaches and mentors to thank, but most importantly, we have each other, our friends.
If I were to give my fellow graduates a piece of advice before we part ways, it would be to always remember where you came from and the people who helped you along the way, to set goals, dream big and realize your path does not have to be straight. And it's okay to make mistakes.
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
So tonight, let’s not worry about the future, but spend time with our friends and enjoy our last time together.
You’ve taught us the value of hard work, perseverance and kindness, and we’ll carry those lessons with us for the rest of our lives.
As we move on to the next phase of our lives, we want you to know that we couldn’t have done it without you. We promise to make you proud, to chase our dreams and to always remember the love and guidance you’ve given us. And when we succeed, we know it will be because of you.
You’ve given us the foundation we need to thrive, and we’ll never forget it. So thank you, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and other supportive family and friends, for everything. It truly takes a village to get us here.
We’ll always be grateful for the role you’ve played in shaping us into the people we are today.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CLASS OF 2024
As you enter this new chapter in your lives, you should be immensely proud of all that you have accomplished and how far you’ve come. Best wishes for a future with endless possibilities.

To the teachers, from a student
Graduate Abigail Welp-Ellis made the following speech at a graduation ceremony held earlier this month at Powell River Recreation Complex.
As many of you may know, my mom is a teacher at Brooks [Secondary School]. Because of that I have been able to meet and make connections with so many amazing and caring members of staff.
I have been able to see the behind the scenes of what it's like being a teacher: the sleepless nights, the early mornings and everything in-between. This has helped me see how truly amazing our teachers are.
The impact of the teachers not only at Brooks, but also at James Thomson [Elementary School], have helped shape me into the person I am today. The teachers at all the different schools have done the same for the roughly 200 students sitting here today [June 8], and the hundreds who have come before and the hundreds who follow. These teachers have
portantly they walked with us on our way to victory. They have helped us all have a seat in these chairs here today. We are grateful that you have created safe, fun places for us to learn.
You have seen us through the last leg of this journey, changing from immature teens to slightly less immature high school graduates.
helped us make lifelong friendships and taught us valuable lessons. Most im-
Thank you to the maintenance, custodial and technical staff, who have helped ensure that our schools are ready for us to learn in, and that the Wi-Fi almost always works. Thank you to the administration, counsellors and support staff who have worked so hard to help your students shine. Your willingness to pick us up when we are down was greatly appreciated.
Thank you to the elementary school teachers. You
have been some of the most influential people in our lives. I am still able to pick out pieces of you in the way I am. The way I curl my 2s like Mme. Denise, the way I pronounce certain French words with a heavy Québecois accent, and the way Melvin taught me the difference between soft and smooth. You have helped shape us into the people we have become. You are so very valued and will always be a part of who we are.
Last, but certainly not least, I would like to send a big thank-you out to the teachers at Brooks.
You have put up with us as we have learned how to be human and when to put our phones away. You have seen us through the last leg of this journey, changing from immature teens to slightly less immature high school

graduates. Your relentless effort to help us learn even when it was the last thing we wanted to be doing has led us all here today.
Thank you for going with the flow when our gazillions of questions led your lessons astray and for telling us stories from back when you had long hair. Thank you for posting videos of the lessons and the notes for the days we missed.
Thank you for letting us live out our acting potential as we read Macbeth and Hamlet in English. Thank you for helping us get through the last 13 years of our lives.
We will never forget the mock trials, the school dances and days when Mastro wore pants instead of shorts. More than anything we will never forget how patient and caring you have been.
I want to once again thank all the members of staff, TOCs, preschool teachers, school-based adults, board members and every teacher who has been by our side. You have pushed us to try our hardest and be the best people we can. The influence of a teacher is like a sharpie; it can never be erased. Thank you, merci, chechahathech!

Congratulations to every member of the outstanding Graduating Class of 2024 on your incredible achievement. We wish you a bright and prosperous future as you begin your next adventure!

Making a mark
Every graduating class thinks it’s unique. The class of 2024 will be no different.
After completing their studies and celebrating at a ceremony earlier this month at Hap Parker Arena, they will now embark on their lives as others have before, in different times and taking different paths, to set their own mark on society.
Challenges await.
Finding any kind of employment, let alone meaningful employment, is more of a challenge than ever before. Shifting economies and depleted natural resources mean the base of industry is changing, as well as the type of jobs which are in demand.
Young people who graduated this month will inherit the world their elders have made for them. They will have to face the burden of a large demographic bulge entering old age. They will have to deal with demands on the health-care system and pension funds. They will have to cope with a degraded environment because of the lack of government controls on industry and toxic waste.

They will also have to deal with the changing power bases in the world, with hot spots all over the globe - Ukraine and Gaza to name just two - armed conflict is escalating. Will they be able to cope with those challenges?
For anyone who spends time with today’s youth, the answer is easy. They are healthier, better educated and more confident than at any other time. They are savvy in the ways of the world, and sophisticated. Although they may not all know what they want, they all seem to have a good idea about how to discover for themselves what is real and important.
Because of modern technology, youth coming from small regions such as qathet aren’t at any disadvantage. On the contrary, they have received many advantages and opportunities, while being protected from dangers more common to larger urban centres.
Youth who are graduating this year are the products of a community that cares. Their brightness, energy and creativity are evidence of that. We pay tribute to them and wish them the best in all their endeavours.
